Pause before approving repairs. Ask the mechanic to explain the exact finding, the evidence behind it, whether the vehicle is safe to drive, and what the proposed work will cost. Get the diagnosis and estimate in writing, set a clear limit on additional work, and consider another opinion if the repair is expensive, complicated, or unclear. Your legal rights depend on where you live, and no general article can determine whether a specific vehicle is safe.
First, find out exactly what the mechanic found
“Serious” is not a standardized technical severity rating. Ask the shop to describe the condition in plain language and explain what it observed or tested. Request copies of test results, measurements, photos, or other evidence it can share, along with the specific work it recommends. The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to get the problem, parts, and anticipated labor identified in a written estimate; see the FTC’s auto repair guidance.

- What work do you recommend, and which parts or systems does it involve?
- What does “serious” mean in this case: a safety concern, a risk of further damage, or another issue?
- What is the risk of waiting, and how soon do you recommend addressing it?
Do not treat a verbal label as a diagnosis. A clear description lets you understand the recommendation, ask meaningful follow-up questions, and explain the issue accurately if you seek another opinion. If the mechanic uses a technical term you do not recognize, ask them to explain it without jargon and show you how the observation or test result led to the recommendation. There is no universal severity scale established by the consumer guidance cited here, so ask what the shop means by “serious” in this particular case.

Ask whether it is safe to drive
Ask the mechanic directly whether the vehicle is safe to drive, and what specific condition informs that answer. If the shop says it is unsafe, do not use generic online advice to overrule a warning about a vehicle that has actually been inspected. Ask about arranging a tow or another safe assessment instead.
There is no way to assess a particular car’s safety without its symptoms, inspection findings, and diagnosis. If the shop’s explanation is unclear, ask for the reason in writing and seek a qualified assessment before driving rather than guessing. A second opinion should not become a reason to drive a vehicle that the inspecting mechanic has said is unsafe; ask how to arrange an assessment without driving it.
Get the estimate and approval boundary in writing
Before authorizing repairs, ask for an estimate that identifies the diagnosed condition, proposed work, anticipated parts and labor, and the maximum amount the shop may spend without contacting you again. Ask the shop to obtain your approval before exceeding that limit or adding work. The FTC notes that state law may require shops to get approval before spending above an authorized amount; the exact rules vary by state. Written estimates and approvals also help establish what you and the shop agreed to. - The condition the shop says it found and the work intended to address it.
- Which parts and labor are included in the estimate.
- The approved spending limit and whether the shop must contact you before doing additional work.
- Any diagnostic, inspection, or disassembly charge, including whether it applies if you decline the repair.
If the shop has already begun inspection or diagnosis, ask what you authorized and what charges may apply. Do not assume that agreeing to have a problem checked also means agreeing to repair it. Likewise, do not assume diagnosis is free: ask about the fee before authorizing the work and whether it is due even if you take the vehicle elsewhere or decline the recommended repair. This can matter when you compare options, because a second shop may charge its own diagnostic fee or need to repeat some tests.

Make the approval boundary specific rather than relying on a general instruction such as “call me if anything changes.” Ask the shop to contact you before it exceeds the amount you approved or performs work outside the written scope. Keep a copy of the estimate and any later change you approve. The FTC says state law may set approval limits, so a written limit is useful for clarity but does not replace checking the rules that apply where the repair is taking place.
Keep inspection and repair consent separate
Consent rules are not identical across the United States. Texas Attorney General guidance advises consumers to authorize in writing before a shop tows, inspects, tests, diagnoses, or disassembles a vehicle for an estimate, and to review inspection and repair authorizations separately. That is Texas-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule. Read what you sign and ask the shop to distinguish permission to investigate from permission to perform repairs. Other states describe their requirements differently. Connecticut, for example, outlines consent requirements for diagnosis charges and a process for notifying customers of a maximum estimate after an unknown problem is diagnosed. Those requirements apply in Connecticut; they should not be assumed to govern a repair elsewhere. Consult the relevant state consumer protection office for rules where the vehicle is being serviced. When you speak with the shop, be explicit about which step you are approving: inspection or diagnosis, a defined repair, or additional work after a new finding. Ask what the authorization form permits and what charges could result if you stop after diagnosis. The point is not to assume that every state uses the same paperwork or procedure; it is to understand what you are agreeing to before the shop proceeds.

Decide whether to seek a second opinion
A second opinion can be useful when the repair is costly, technically complicated, or difficult to understand. The FTC puts it plainly: “If you need expensive or complicated repairs, or if you have questions about recommended work, consider getting a second opinion.” A diagnostic-only shop may be able to provide an opinion without selling the parts or repair, according to FTC guidance on auto repairs. Ask about diagnostic fees before booking, and clarify whether the other shop will need to repeat tests or inspection work.
When comparing opinions or estimates, look beyond the total price. Check whether each shop identifies the same condition and supporting evidence, separates urgent work from work that may wait, and itemizes parts, labor, and diagnostic charges. Also compare warranty terms, the shop’s experience with your make or model, and relevant credentials. The FTC recommends checking experience with the same make or model and comparing repair warranties. Certification can be one useful data point, but it does not guarantee honest or high-quality work.
It can help to give the second shop the first shop’s written findings and test information, if you have them, and ask whether it agrees with the diagnosis or recommends further testing. Ask for its own findings and scope in writing too. A lower estimate is not automatically a better comparison if it covers different work, leaves out parts or labor, or does not address the same condition. A higher estimate is not automatically proof that every proposed repair is necessary. Compare what each shop says it found, what it proposes to do, what it will charge for diagnosis, and what warranty terms it offers.

If the shops disagree, ask each to explain the difference in diagnosis or evidence. A lower estimate is not automatically equivalent if it covers different work, and a more expensive proposal is not automatically necessary. You may need a further vehicle-specific assessment to resolve a genuine disagreement.

Preserve records and handle a dispute methodically
Keep the inspection report, written estimate, signed authorizations, messages, invoices, and the names of people you spoke with, plus dates and amounts. Save any test results or photos the shop provides. These records help you track what was recommended, what you approved, and what was ultimately charged. If the estimate changes, keep the updated version and note when and how you approved it. Having the sequence documented can help you explain the issue clearly if you discuss a bill with the shop or contact a consumer agency.
If you believe the shop performed work you did not approve or charged for something you did not agree to, start by raising the issue with the manager or owner. The Georgia Attorney General frames a common consumer concern as: “Can a mechanic make repairs to your vehicle that were not discussed and agreed to ahead of time and charge you for them?” The answer and available remedies can depend on your state’s law and the authorization records. If direct discussion does not resolve the issue, contact the appropriate state or local consumer protection agency. USAGov directs consumers with unresolved auto repair shop complaints to their state consumer protection agency; the right agency and possible remedies depend on the issue and location. Small-claims court may also be an option, depending on local rules and the amount in dispute.
A practical sequence when the shop calls with bad news
- Ask for the diagnosis: Get the condition, evidence, and recommended work explained in plain language.
- Clarify safety: Ask whether it is safe to drive and what specific finding supports the answer. If told not to drive, arrange a tow or another safe assessment.
- Request written details: Obtain the inspection finding, itemized estimate, and proposed work before deciding.
- Check what you already authorized: Separate consent for diagnosis or inspection from consent for repairs, and ask about any fees already incurred.
- Set a spending limit: State in writing that the shop must contact you for approval before exceeding the estimate or adding work.
- Choose deliberately: Approve the defined work, ask for clarification, or seek a second opinion; check diagnostic fees before transferring the vehicle or booking elsewhere.
- Keep the paper trail: Save all reports, approvals, estimates, messages, and invoices.

Should I drive the car after the mechanic says it is unsafe?
