Why won’t my car charge when it’s plugged in?
A connected cable does not necessarily mean the vehicle has asked to charge. A scheduled charging window, charge setting, access control, or warning can delay or prevent the session. The cause may also be a connector that is not fully seated, a charger problem, or an issue with the electrical supply.

Start with the vehicle’s own settings and alerts rather than assuming the charger is faulty. Kia’s 2023 CV1 owner manual notes that scheduled charging may prevent immediate charging after connection and advises checking the corresponding cluster message when a warning appears: Kia owner guidance on charging stops. Kia’s guidance says: “When the vehicle does not charge and a warning message appears on the cluster, check the corresponding message.” Treat that as a prompt to consult your own vehicle’s warning and manual, since the message and next steps depend on the model.

It helps to think of a charging session as involving several parts: the vehicle’s settings and ability to request energy, the connector and cable, the charger’s state, and the electrical supply at the site. A problem in any one of them can look like “the charger isn’t working.” The checks below move from things you can safely verify to the evidence that helps decide who to contact.

What to check first
1. Check the vehicle’s charging settings and alerts
- Look for a scheduled-charge window that would make the car wait until later. If the car is set to charge at a particular time, plugging in may not begin energy delivery immediately.
- Check the charge limit or target. If the vehicle has already reached its selected target, it may stop as expected. If a session stopped and you want more charge, check the vehicle’s instructions for what to do next; changing the target alone may not restart a stopped session.
- Read any dashboard or instrument-cluster warning and follow the vehicle manual’s instructions. A warning message can identify a vehicle-side issue that a charger reset will not fix.
- Check whether the charger or vehicle indicates an access or configuration restriction. Some settings can block a session even when the equipment is powered and connected.
Do not assume that a delay or stop is a fault until you have checked the selected schedule and target. Conversely, if the vehicle displays a warning, use the message and the vehicle maker’s guidance rather than repeatedly restarting the charger.
2. Check the connector and cable
Confirm the connector is fully inserted at the vehicle and, where applicable, at the charging unit. A partially seated or loosened connector may prevent a session from beginning or interrupt one already in progress. Look over the cable and connector for visible damage, without opening or dismantling any equipment. Do not use damaged charging equipment.
If you see damage, notice unusual heat, or smell burning, stop the session and contact the charger operator or an appropriate service professional instead of trying repeated restarts. A safety concern changes the priority: do not keep testing the equipment just to determine whether the fault is in the car or charger.
3. Read the charger’s status
Use the status screen or indicator lights together with the manual for the exact charger model. Indicators are not universal: the same color or blink pattern can mean something different on another product. A charger may be powered and ready while the vehicle has not requested energy, or it may be blocked by a setting or have a power problem.
Record the exact display message or light pattern before you contact support. The code is useful only when interpreted against the documentation for that charger and, where relevant, the right generation or installation. Do not apply one manufacturer’s status meanings to another product.

How to tell whether the fault is the car, charger, or site
If it is safe and convenient, try the vehicle at another charger that is known to work. This is a comparison that can help narrow the possibilities, not a definitive diagnosis: equipment, settings, and conditions can differ between sites. Consider the result together with the car’s warning messages, the original charger’s status, and whether the issue happens at one particular location.
- The car charges at another charger: The original charger, its configuration, or the site’s electrical supply becomes a more likely place to investigate. Kia advises contacting the charger maker when the vehicle charges properly elsewhere.
- The car also fails at another normally working charger: The vehicle or its charging settings become more likely causes. Kia advises contacting an authorized Kia dealer in this situation.
- The charger indicates that the vehicle has not requested charging: Check the vehicle schedule, charge settings, alerts, and any access-control configuration before concluding that the unit has lost power. The exact interpretation still depends on that charger’s manual.
- The problem happens only at one home location: A recurring power or voltage warning at the usual charging location warrants attention to the charging installation and supply. Follow the vehicle and charger maker’s guidance and arrange an inspection by a qualified electrician when directed.
- The issue occurs at a public station: Check the connector, note the station ID and error code, and contact the network if the station-specific problem continues. Its support team can use the identifying details to address the relevant equipment.
These clues help prioritize who to contact; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. A successful charge elsewhere makes the first location more suspect, but does not prove which part of that site is at fault. Likewise, a failure at another charger makes a vehicle-side cause more plausible, but your vehicle’s settings and alerts remain important evidence. Do not repeatedly reset equipment if there is a warning light, visible damage, burning smell, unusual heat, or another safety concern.
Why does my EV charger stop charging?
A session can end because the vehicle reached its selected charge target, a vehicle alert interrupted charging, the connector loosened, or the charger or site stopped delivering power. Check the car’s alerts and the charger display first. If charging stopped at a public station, also check that the connector remains seated and use the network’s supported restart method, if appropriate.
Use the evidence available rather than assuming every early stop has the same cause. A target reached or a schedule setting points you back to the vehicle’s charge settings. An error message or status light may provide a clue about the vehicle or charger, but should be interpreted only with the relevant manufacturer’s instructions. A problem that recurs at one home charging location, particularly with a voltage or power warning, calls for attention to the supply and installation rather than repeated attempts to restart.
Restarting a stopped DC session
Restart instructions depend on the vehicle and station. Ford’s US troubleshooting guidance says that after a DC charging session stops, raising the target state of charge alone will not resume that same session: disconnecting and reconnecting as directed is required to begin a new one. Follow the instructions shown by the vehicle and station rather than treating this as a universal restart procedure: Ford charging troubleshooting.

In other words, distinguish a stopped session from a target setting that was simply too low. If the DC session has ended, changing the target does not itself reopen that session under Ford’s guidance. Use the vehicle and station directions to end the connection and begin a new session, and do not transfer this specific procedure to other vehicles or charging equipment without checking their instructions.
Restarting at a public station
Follow the station’s instructions. Depending on the network, restarting may involve its app, an RFID card, or a QR code. Check that the connector is properly seated, then use the available station method only if appropriate and no safety concern is present. Before contacting support, record the station ID and the displayed error code; preserve the exact wording if there is a message.
Ivy Charging Network recommends checking the connector, restarting through the available station method when appropriate, and providing those details to support: Ivy public-charging troubleshooting. Network procedures vary, so follow the instructions available at that station rather than trying an unrelated reset sequence.
What Tesla Wall Connector lights mean
The following examples apply to Tesla Wall Connector indicators described in Tesla’s support documentation, not to EV chargers generally:
- Solid blue: The Wall Connector is connected, but the vehicle has not requested charging.
- Two blue blinks: Charging is blocked by a configuration condition, such as scheduling or access control.
- No lights: The Wall Connector is not receiving power.
These examples illustrate why a light code can help separate a vehicle request or configuration issue from a power issue, but only within the product it describes. Check the documentation for your specific Wall Connector generation and installation before interpreting an indicator or taking action: Tesla Wall Connector troubleshooting. Other charger brands can use different meanings, so do not treat blue lights or a dark indicator as universal diagnostic codes.

When a home charging warning needs an electrician
A recurring voltage-drop warning at home should not be treated as a routine charger glitch. Tesla owner documentation describes a large voltage-drop alert as an interruption detected by the onboard charger. Possible contributing factors listed include building wiring, an outlet, extension wiring, and other loads on the circuit. For repeated alerts at the usual charging location, Tesla recommends having an electrician inspect the installation. The guidance is model-specific; follow the instructions for your vehicle and equipment.
Tesla owner documentation also identifies a separate alert, CHG_u004, for power lost while charging. These alert labels and descriptions are Tesla-specific; use your own vehicle’s alert text and manual rather than assuming another maker uses the same codes or diagnostic meanings. If an alert recurs, document what the vehicle reports and where it occurs, then follow the manufacturer’s escalation instructions.
Do not open a charger, work on household wiring, or attempt to repair energized equipment. Tesla owner alert documentation is available through the NHTSA-hosted Tesla owner-manual document. If the maker’s guidance indicates an inspection, use a qualified electrician; no universal repair, part replacement, or cost estimate is available for these warnings.

- For a public charger: the station ID, the error code or exact message, and whether the connector was fully seated. Note whether you tried the station’s supported restart method, if you did so safely.
- For the vehicle: the dashboard warning and whether the car charges at another normally working charger. Include whether a schedule or charge target could explain the delay or stop.
- For a home charger: whether the problem recurs at the usual charging location and any voltage or power alert shown by the vehicle or charger. Keep the alert specific to the make and model when describing it.
- For any contact: explain whether charging failed to start or stopped mid-session. These are different observations and can help support staff understand which instructions are relevant.
Contact the public network about a station-specific failure. For a vehicle that fails at multiple normally working chargers, contact the vehicle maker or an authorized dealer; Kia’s guidance specifically recommends an authorized Kia dealer in that circumstance. For repeated home voltage or supply warnings, follow the maker’s escalation guidance and use a qualified electrician when an inspection is indicated. Avoid buying a replacement cable, adapter, or diagnostic tool based only on a failed session: the available guidance supports isolating the cause and contacting the appropriate support, not replacing a part without evidence.

Why does my EV charger stop charging?
The vehicle may have reached its selected charge target, an alert may have interrupted charging, the connector may have loosened, or the charger or site may have stopped delivering power. Check the vehicle alerts and charger display, and use the station’s supported restart procedure only when appropriate.
Will changing my charge target restart a stopped DC session?
