Secure the vehicle, then use the owner’s manual for the exact model, year, trim, and market. If that manual permits a jump and identifies the terminals, use only its 12-volt connection procedure. The vehicle has started only when READY appears—not when the screens or accessories merely light up. If READY does not appear, the battery is damaged, or you are unsure of any connection, stop and call roadside assistance or a qualified repairer.
What a dead 12-volt battery means in a hybrid SUV
A hybrid SUV normally has two electrically different battery systems. The small 12-volt battery powers low-voltage electronics, control modules, locks, displays and the sequence that enables the hybrid system. The high-voltage traction battery stores energy for the electric drive system. A discharged 12-volt battery can therefore prevent the hybrid system from starting even when the traction battery has not failed.

A roadside boost is directed at the 12-volt system. It is not a way to charge, jump, disconnect or repair high-voltage components. Never open high-voltage covers or touch orange cables. Toyota’s 2023 RAV4 Prime manual also states that its hybrid system cannot be started by push-starting, so rolling the SUV downhill or towing it to spin the wheels is not a substitute for the prescribed electrical procedure.

- If the SUV is in a traffic lane, a blind curve, a live shoulder or another dangerous position, call roadside assistance before opening the hood.
- Switch on hazard warning lights if they work, move occupants away from traffic and keep children and bystanders clear of the engine compartment.
- Park as the manual directs, apply the parking brake and switch off lights, climate control, audio and accessories before inspecting the battery.
- Do not attempt a jump in rain, standing water or a location where the donor vehicle or cables could be struck.
Safety takes precedence over recovering the vehicle yourself. A damaged, leaking, swollen or frozen battery is a stop condition, not a reason to improvise.

Identify the exact vehicle before connecting anything
Jump points, ground locations, covers and cable order differ by manufacturer and model year. Find the make, model year, trim and market designation, then open that vehicle’s owner’s manual to the section usually titled If the 12-volt battery is discharged or If the 12-Volt Battery Is Dead. A procedure for one hybrid SUV cannot safely be transferred to another.
For example, the U.S.-market 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime manual specifies an exclusive positive jump-start terminal under the fuse-box cover. Its negative cable goes to a stationary, unpainted metal point away from moving parts. The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid manual instead specifies an engine mounting bolt for the vehicle-side negative cable. Those instructions are manufacturer-specific; do not substitute the Honda connection point for Toyota’s or vice versa.
Understand the two batteries

Seeing a blank display, slow locks or clicking relays is consistent with low 12-volt voltage, but those symptoms alone do not diagnose the battery. Conversely, a vehicle that powers its screens but never reaches READY may have another fault.
Use only a permitted 12-volt source
The source must match the owner’s manual. Toyota’s cited procedures describe jumper or booster cables connected to another vehicle with a 12-volt battery. Honda’s 2026 CR-V Hybrid instructions explicitly require a 12-volt booster battery. They are not permission to connect a higher-voltage pack or an unidentified workshop supply.

Honda’s manual also gives a charger warning: when using an automotive charger, select a charging voltage lower than 15 volts and consult the charger’s instructions. This is a Honda-specific direction, not a universal setting for every hybrid SUV. If your manual does not describe charger use, do not infer a safe voltage from another vehicle.
How to jump-start when the manual permits it
1. Prepare both vehicles or the approved booster
Position a donor vehicle close enough for the cables to reach without touching fans, belts or hot exhaust parts, but do not let the vehicles touch. Switch the donor vehicle off while making connections unless the manual expressly says otherwise. Put both vehicles in the prescribed park or neutral state, set their parking brakes and turn off all accessories.
If using a portable booster, confirm that it is a 12-volt unit, charged, undamaged and suitable according to both the booster instructions and the SUV manual. No universal peak-current rating or product fit is established for every hybrid SUV, so do not choose a device solely by a marketing number.

Open the hood and remove the fuse-box or terminal cover exactly as illustrated in the manual. Keep hands, clothing and cables away from moving parts. Do not use a random body bolt, painted bracket or the negative post if the manual specifies a separate grounding point.

In Toyota’s 2023 RAV4 Prime example, the vehicle-side positive connection is the dedicated jump terminal. The negative connection is a stationary unpainted metal point positioned away from the jump terminal and moving parts. In Honda’s 2026 CR-V Hybrid example, the negative cable attaches to a named engine mounting bolt. These are examples of why a generic diagram can be unsafe.
3. Connect in the order shown for your SUV
Follow the exact sequence printed in the manual. The Toyota RAV4 Prime sequence is:
- Connect the positive cable to the Toyota’s exclusive positive jump terminal.
- Connect the other positive clamp to the donor battery’s positive terminal.
- Connect the negative cable to the donor battery’s negative terminal.
- Connect the remaining negative clamp to Toyota’s designated stationary, unpainted metal ground point, away from moving parts and the jump terminal.
Do not treat that order or those locations as a universal hybrid-SUV standard. If your manual gives a different order, its instructions control. Keep clamps from touching each other or any unintended metal.
4. Supply power and attempt startup
For the cited RAV4 Prime procedure, start the assisting vehicle and maintain a slight increase in engine speed for approximately five minutes. Then try to start the hybrid system using the normal start procedure. That five-minute instruction belongs to that Toyota model procedure; it is not a guaranteed waiting time for every vehicle.

Press the brake as required and look specifically for the READY indicator. Illuminated screens, cabin lights, radio operation or a warning chime do not prove that the hybrid system has started. Do not move the SUV until READY appears and the manual’s normal operating conditions are met.
5. Disconnect exactly as instructed
If the system reaches READY, remove the cables in the exact reverse order of connection for that vehicle, preventing clamps from touching metal or one another. Replace the fuse-box and terminal covers. Toyota’s cited instructions call for the vehicle to be inspected as soon as possible after the restart.

READY does not appear
Stop trying repeated improvised connections. Toyota directs owners to contact a dealer if READY does not come on. A failed attempt can mean the 12-volt battery is severely depleted or damaged, the connection is wrong, the source is unsuitable, or the vehicle has another electrical or hybrid-system fault. Arrange roadside assistance, dealer service or a qualified repair inspection.

The battery is visibly damaged
Do not jump a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, hot, frozen or producing a strong unusual odor. Move away from the vehicle and request professional help. Honda warns that an incorrect jump-start procedure can cause a battery explosion and serious injury.

The SUV starts, then the problem returns
A jump restores enough low-voltage power to start the system; it does not identify the cause of the discharge. A technician should test the 12-volt battery and the vehicle’s charging and parasitic-load systems. Repeated discharge may indicate a battery nearing the end of its service life, an accessory left on, a charging fault or another electrical problem. The cited manuals do not establish that every jump requires immediate battery replacement.
The manual or terminals are unavailable
Do not guess based on a similar-looking SUV. Call roadside assistance or a qualified repairer and provide the exact model year, trim and location. Professional help is also the correct choice when the vehicle is in an unsafe position, the donor source is uncertain or you cannot identify a solid prescribed ground point.
What to do after the vehicle reaches READY
Arrange inspection promptly, even if the SUV appears normal. Toyota’s 2023 RAV4 Prime and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid instructions both direct owners to have the vehicle checked after a discharged-battery restart. The inspection can determine whether the battery needs charging, testing or replacement and whether another circuit caused the discharge.
Do not rely on a fixed driving distance or idle period as a universal cure. Hybrid charging behavior, battery condition and accessory loads vary by model, and the manuals cited here do not promise that a drive will restore a weak battery. Until it has been checked, keep the vehicle where a second no-start will not create a safety problem.
Jumper cables or a portable jump starter?

A portable 12-volt jump starter is a reasonable preparedness option if its instructions and voltage match your vehicle manual. It is not a substitute for knowing the correct terminal locations, and carrying one does not make a damaged battery safe to jump.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every hybrid SUV has a visible 12-volt battery post under the hood.
- Connecting to high-voltage orange wiring or opening high-voltage service panels.
- Using a 24-volt truck source, an unapproved charger setting or an unknown power supply.
- Clamping the negative lead to painted metal, a moving component or a point the manual does not designate.
- Mixing the terminal sequence from one manufacturer with the connection points from another.
- Calling the vehicle started because accessories work instead of checking READY.
- Replacing the battery solely because one discharge occurred, without testing the battery and the vehicle’s electrical system.
When to call for help immediately
- You are stopped somewhere exposed to traffic or other immediate hazards.
- The battery is cracked, leaking, swollen, frozen, hot or smoking.
- You cannot verify the exact owner’s manual or identify the prescribed terminals.
- A correct, manual-approved attempt does not produce READY.
- The SUV repeatedly loses 12-volt power after restarting.
- You suspect damage to high-voltage components or see warning messages that the manual treats as urgent.
The safest outcome is not simply getting the displays to light. It is a controlled restart using the correct 12-volt method, confirmation that READY appears, and a prompt inspection when the battery has discharged.
