If your new car is dead after sitting at the dealership, contact the selling dealer before authorizing repairs. Record what happened, have the 12-volt battery tested and the cause investigated, and use the vehicle’s roadside-assistance service or owner’s manual for a safe, vehicle-specific power restoration.
Do these things first
- Call the dealer that sold you the car. Tell the service department the delivery date, how long the vehicle sat, what stopped working, and whether anyone attempted a jump-start. Ask whether the dealer or the manufacturer’s roadside-assistance service will arrange a boost or tow.
- Preserve the facts before help arrives. Write down the date and time, odometer reading, approximate parking duration, dashboard or mobile-app warnings, interior or exterior lights that were on, and whether locks, displays or accessories still operated. Photograph warning messages if they are visible. Keep roadside invoices, tow receipts and every repair order.
- Ask for a written battery assessment. Request the 12-volt battery tester result, state of charge, any load or capacity finding, and the action taken. The paperwork should say whether the battery was charged, replaced, or only boosted.
- Ask how the dealer checked the cause. If the battery was discharged and no obvious lamp or accessory explains it, ask whether a parasitic or dark-current draw test is appropriate. A jump-start restores voltage temporarily; it does not identify why the battery went flat.
- Get the coverage decision in writing. Ask the dealer to identify the applicable warranty or roadside-assistance term and the test result supporting approval or denial. If the answer is unclear, use the manufacturer’s customer-care process and the consumer-protection channel available in your jurisdiction.
A dead battery does not by itself prove dealer negligence or establish that a replacement is covered. The dealer needs to determine whether the battery was undercharged, defective, discharged by the vehicle, or affected by another condition.

Should the dealer fix a new car with a dead battery?
Usually, the selling dealer is the best first stop because it can verify the pre-delivery record, test the vehicle under the manufacturer’s procedures and make a coverage decision. That does not mean every discharged battery qualifies for warranty replacement. Coverage can depend on the battery test, the vehicle’s warranty terms, the time and mileage since delivery, and the documented cause.

- Restoration: how the vehicle was made operational, such as a boost or recharge.
- Condition assessment: the measured state of charge and battery-health or load result.
- Cause investigation: checks for lights left on, storage-related depletion, charging-system problems or a vehicle-side electrical draw.
If the dealer says the battery “passed” but the car had been completely dead, ask what test was performed and under what state-of-charge conditions. A pass result after charging may not rule out an intermittent draw or a battery that cannot hold charge.
Why a battery can be dead after dealership storage
The available manufacturer guidance identifies several possible contributors: time in storage, temperature, electrical load, parasitic drain and the battery’s condition. Those factors can overlap, and the same symptom can have different causes on different vehicles.

Hyundai’s battery-care information likewise notes that long parked periods can passively drain a battery and that temperature affects battery behavior. That general care guidance does not identify the cause of your particular vehicle’s failure.

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, bulletin T-SB-0024-23 Rev2, dated May 26, 2023, is a concrete example of a manufacturer assigning battery-maintenance duties during inventory. It says storage period, temperature, parasitic drain and battery load affect stored-battery performance. For Toyota dealers in the United States, the bulletin states:

“It is the dealer’s responsibility to maintain the specified State-Of-Charge (SOC) of the vehicle’s battery while in stock and ensure proper SOC at delivery.”
The same bulletin directs dealers to test the auxiliary 12-volt battery and recharge it if necessary no more than 48 hours before customer delivery:
“To eliminate customer service concerns due to an undercharged battery during the first few weeks of ownership, All dealers should test the auxiliary (12V) battery and recharge, if necessary, no more than 48 hours before delivery to the customer.”

That 48-hour instruction is Toyota dealer guidance, not a universal rule for every automaker and not a legal standard. The bulletin also says vehicles stored more than 30 days should follow Toyota’s long-term-storage guidelines. If your car is another make, ask that manufacturer’s dealer what inventory-maintenance procedure applies rather than assuming Toyota’s intervals govern it.

How to restore power safely
You have two practical routes. For a recently delivered vehicle with an unexplained failure, dealer-arranged assistance generally provides the clearest repair record and ensures that the correct jump points and procedures are used.

Before attempting a jump
- Confirm whether the vehicle is a conventional gasoline or diesel car, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric model.
- Read the jump-start section of the exact owner’s manual for the model year and trim. Battery location and designated connection points can differ.
- Check for warnings against jump-starting, charging or opening particular covers. Do not guess which terminal or grounding point to use.
- Use the manufacturer’s roadside service or a tow if the manual is unavailable, the battery is damaged or leaking, cables are hot, the vehicle has been in a collision, or warning messages indicate a high-voltage-system problem.
- After power is restored, do not assume driving has repaired the underlying issue. Go to the selling dealer for a documented test.
Toyota’s 2021 RAV4 owner manual illustrates why generic cable diagrams are risky: its discharged-battery procedure is model-specific and includes cautions about jumper-cable contact. Chevrolet’s roadside-assistance information lists battery jump-start service as an assistance category and directs owners to the dealer or owner’s manual for vehicle-specific warranty details. Neither source makes one procedure or coverage level universal.
What diagnosis should the dealer perform?
Ask the service adviser to explain the test sequence in plain language and attach the results to the repair order. A useful diagnosis addresses both the battery and the vehicle that may have discharged it.
Battery condition and state of charge
The technician should identify the battery’s measured state of charge and the result of the manufacturer-specified battery or load test. Ask whether the battery was fully charged before testing; a severely low state of charge can affect what a tester reports. The paperwork should distinguish a battery that is merely empty from one that fails capacity or condition testing.

Charging and delivery history
Ask whether the battery was recharged, how long it was charged, and whether the vehicle’s charging system was checked where applicable. Request any pre-delivery inspection or inventory-maintenance entry showing when the battery was last tested.
Parasitic or dark-current draw
A General Motors technical bulletin hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration instructs technicians to establish how the vehicle was used and whether it was jump-started. When no cause such as a lamp left on is found, that guidance says technicians should ensure there is no vehicle-side condition capable of causing another discharge, including a correctly performed parasitic or dark-current draw test. This is GM service guidance; the dealer must determine whether the procedure and specifications apply to your make and model.
Intermittent faults and repeat failures
If the battery passes a basic test but the car dies again, tell the dealer the dates and parking intervals for every event. Ask whether modules were allowed to enter their normal sleep state before current was measured and whether accessories, telematics or aftermarket equipment were considered. A single snapshot may miss an intermittent drain.

Yes. You can ask the dealer to replace the battery under the applicable warranty, but request testing before authorizing a purchase. The dealer should explain whether the battery failed the required test, whether it was damaged, or whether the coverage terms exclude the condition. Do not buy a replacement battery or diagnostic tool simply because a jump-start was needed; that could spend money without resolving a vehicle-side fault.

If replacement is approved, obtain the battery part number, installation date, warranty terms and test result. If replacement is denied, ask for the denial and the supporting measurement in writing. Keep the old battery information if the dealer returns it to you, but do not remove or alter parts before the dealer has had a reasonable opportunity to inspect the vehicle.
What if the new car dies again?
- Stop repeated jump-start attempts if the vehicle shows high-voltage, charging-system or electrical warnings, or if cables or terminals heat abnormally.
- Call the selling dealer or roadside assistance and identify the first repair-order number.
- Provide a timeline: delivery date, each parking interval, weather or temperature conditions, warning messages, accessories used, jump-start dates and how long the vehicle ran afterward.
- Give the dealer every test printout and ask specifically whether a repeat discharge requires a parasitic/dark-current draw investigation.
- Ask for a written explanation of the confirmed cause, the repair performed and the coverage decision before accepting the vehicle.
A basic battery pass after a recharge does not explain a repeat discharge. Treat recurrence as a reason to expand the diagnosis, not simply as proof that the replacement battery is also bad.
Keeping a useful record
Use one folder—paper or digital—for the purchase contract, delivery inspection, owner’s-manual pages, roadside dispatch, tow and rental receipts, photographs, test results and repair orders. Write down names, dates and promised follow-up. A clear chronology helps the dealer compare events with diagnostic data and gives a manufacturer customer-care representative the information needed to review an unresolved case.
Consumer remedies and warranty rights vary by jurisdiction, vehicle type and contract. If the dealer and manufacturer do not resolve the matter, consult the applicable consumer-protection authority or legal adviser for your location; the existence of a dead battery alone does not establish a specific legal entitlement.
Optional emergency equipment
A portable 12-volt jump starter can be a useful emergency accessory, but it is not a repair for an unexplained failure on a new car. Verify that its voltage and connections are compatible with your vehicle, store it as directed, and follow the exact owner’s manual. For hybrids and electric vehicles, the 12-volt system and designated jump points may differ from a conventional car. Using equipment without the manufacturer’s procedure can create a safety risk and complicate the diagnostic record.
