If your car has been flooded with fresh water, get people to safety, then leave the vehicle off. Do not start it, activate accessories, or drive it to see whether it works. When it is safe to approach, document the visible damage, contact your insurer, and arrange a tow and professional inspection. Fresh water can still carry silt and damage mechanical, electrical, and safety systems; a dry-looking car is not necessarily safe to drive.
1. Get yourself and others to safety
If floodwater remains around the car or the area is otherwise unsafe, do not wade in to inspect it or retrieve belongings. Follow local emergency directions and wait until it is safe to approach. Floodwater can cause injuries and expose people to infection or chemical hazards; the CDC advises against driving through flooded areas. See the CDC’s floodwater safety guidance.

If the car is in moving water, prioritize getting people out of danger rather than saving the vehicle. NHTSA’s severe-weather guidance notes that 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars and two feet can carry away most trucks and SUVs. Those figures concern moving water and vehicle safety, not a way to predict damage to a parked flooded car. Follow NHTSA’s severe-weather safety advice.

2. Do not start or test the car
Do not turn the key, press the start button, or switch on lights, climate controls, the radio, or other accessories to check whether the car works. Do not try to move it under its own power. Water may have entered the engine, cylinders, or electrical systems, and starting the vehicle can worsen damage. Some problems are not visible from outside. State Farm and NHTSA both advise against starting a flooded vehicle before it has been assessed.
If the engine is running while water rises, shut it off only if you can do so without putting yourself at risk. Do not reach through unsafe water or approach a vehicle if doing so could expose you to electrical or other hazards.
A car that starts, has dry seats, or appears normal from the outside is not necessarily safe. Water could have reached areas you cannot see, and electrical or mechanical problems may not be apparent until later. Avoid using the car’s systems as a diagnostic test; have a qualified professional assess it first. This advice applies whether the water entered the cabin, reached the engine area, or the extent of exposure is unclear.
3. Document the damage when it is safe
Once you can safely reach the vehicle, take photos or video of the exterior, cabin, visible waterline, and any apparent damage. Note when the flooding happened and keep the files with your claim records. Do not delay leaving an unsafe area to collect evidence. State Farm’s flooded-car guidance and the Texas Department of Insurance recommend documenting damage when it is safe to do so.
Capture the vehicle from several angles and include the interior if it is safe to enter. Images of mud, silt, watermarks, and visible damage may help show what happened, but do not remove panels or move through standing water to get a better view. Keep the original photos or videos, and write down the date and time of the flooding while the details are fresh. Documentation supports the claim; it does not replace an inspection or prove the full extent of hidden damage.
4. Call your insurer before authorizing cleanup or repairs
Report the flooding to your auto insurer and ask what your policy covers, how towing should be arranged, and whether an adjuster or designated inspection needs to happen before repairs or cleanup. Keep records of the claim and of any instructions you receive.

In Texas, the Department of Insurance says comprehensive auto coverage covers flood damage. That is not a guarantee for every driver: coverage depends on the policy and applicable location-specific requirements. State Farm likewise advises checking the actual policy and location. Do not assume the insurer will pay for every loss or that it will declare the vehicle a total loss. See the Texas Department of Insurance guidance on flooded cars and your own policy documents.
When you call, describe what you know without guessing about how far the water reached or what it damaged. Ask whether the insurer wants to arrange a tow, where the vehicle should be taken, and whether an adjuster or designated inspection should occur before anyone cleans or repairs it. Confirm any instructions and keep claim numbers, names, and related records. Do not authorize work based on an assumption that a particular repair, towing charge, or total-loss decision will be covered; the insurer must assess the claim under the policy.
Comprehensive coverage is the relevant coverage identified in the Texas guidance, but the article cannot determine whether your particular policy covers this incident. Policy language and applicable local requirements matter. If you are unsure, contact your current insurer rather than delaying notification while shopping for a different policy.
5. Have it towed and professionally inspected
Arrange recovery or towing to a qualified repair facility rather than driving to a shop. Ask the insurer whether it has a preferred process or inspection arrangements before authorizing work. A qualified mechanic can evaluate the parts and systems appropriate to your vehicle, including fluids, mechanical components, electrical systems, and safety systems.
Drying the cabin or removing visible mud does not establish that a car is safe to use. Water inside the passenger compartment can contribute to corrosion and later electronic failures, while silt and mud can affect components and interior materials. The Texas Department of Insurance advises speaking with a mechanic before trying to dry a car with water inside. New Zealand’s Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency also warns that simply drying a water-damaged car does not prove it is safe. Its guidance is useful for understanding vehicle risks, not as U.S. legal or insurance advice: water-damaged vehicle guidance.

Tell the shop and insurer what you know about the exposure, including whether water reached the passenger compartment or engine area, and share the photos you took. If you do not know the waterline or where water entered, say so rather than estimating. The professional assessment should determine what needs checking for that particular vehicle. There is no universal depth threshold in the cited guidance that can establish whether a vehicle is safe, what repairs it needs, or whether repair is worthwhile.

Do not assume that airing out the interior or removing carpets is an adequate repair. Visible dryness addresses only what you can see; it does not establish the condition of electrical, mechanical, or safety systems. A professional inspection is especially important before the car is returned to use.
6. What fresh water changes—and what it does not
Fresh water is generally less corrosive than salt water, but that does not make a flooded car harmless or predictably repairable. Fresh water can carry silt and mud into moving parts and interior materials. Water in the cabin can also contribute to corrosion and delayed electronic faults. Salt water generally raises corrosion concerns, but the difference does not provide a reliable repair-cost estimate or determine whether a particular vehicle can be repaired.
The amount and location of water exposure matter, but the supplied guidance does not establish a universal depth threshold for damage. Exterior wetting alone, water in the passenger compartment, and water reaching the engine area are different situations; a professional assessment is needed to establish what was affected.
For that reason, “freshwater” is not a useful all-clear. It describes the kind of water, not which components were exposed or how the vehicle was affected. Silt and mud may be present even when water is not salty, and water that has entered the cabin can affect materials and electronics over time. There is no supported general repair price or rule that predicts a total loss from water type alone. Let the insurer and qualified repair professional assess this vehicle rather than relying on a broad comparison with saltwater damage.
7. Extra precautions for electric and hybrid vehicles
Flooded electric vehicles and hybrids can present high-voltage shock and fire hazards if the battery is damaged. Do not touch high-voltage components. If battery damage is suspected, contact the vehicle dealer and/or emergency services and follow vehicle-specific manufacturer and responder instructions.
NHTSA says not to park a damaged lithium-ion vehicle in a garage or within 50 feet of a house or other structure, another vehicle, or combustibles. Treat suspected battery damage as a safety issue, not a routine drying or repair task. See NHTSA’s hurricane- and flood-damaged vehicle guidance.

A vehicle declared a total loss may receive a salvage or flood title. NHTSA describes title-transfer obligations when an insurer pays a total-loss claim, but title procedures vary by state. Ask your insurer what paperwork applies and contact your state DMV for local rules. If the original title is lost, NHTSA advises contacting the state DMV about obtaining a replacement.
If you later consider buying a used vehicle that may have been flooded, check its title history through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) and look for watermarks or silt in hidden areas, unusual corrosion, and musty odors. NHTSA specifically suggests checking the trunk, glove box, and under the dashboard. These clues can justify further checks but cannot, by themselves, establish the vehicle’s full condition. See the FTC’s guide to buying a flood-damaged car.
Do not assume that a title will be handled the same way in every state. Ask the insurer what it will submit or provide after a total-loss settlement, and check the DMV requirements where the vehicle is titled. If you are shopping for a replacement, title-history checks and a careful inspection can help identify concerns, but neither a clean-looking cabin nor one database search guarantees that a used vehicle has never been flooded.

Will freshwater damage my car?
It can. Freshwater may carry silt and mud into moving parts and interior materials, and water in the cabin can contribute to corrosion and later electronic failures. Freshwater may be less corrosive than saltwater in general, but the water type alone cannot predict the damage or repairability.

Should I try to dry out a flooded car myself?
Do not treat drying the cabin or removing visible mud as proof that the car is safe. The Texas Department of Insurance advises speaking with a mechanic before trying to dry a car with water inside. Contact your insurer first to ask whether an adjuster or designated inspection should happen before cleanup, then arrange a professional assessment.
Does car insurance cover flood damage?
The Texas Department of Insurance says comprehensive auto coverage covers flood damage, but coverage depends on the actual policy and applicable location-specific requirements. Contact your insurer, report the loss, and ask what is covered and how towing and inspection should be handled. No general statement guarantees payment for a particular claim.
Is freshwater damage less serious than saltwater damage?
Saltwater generally raises corrosion concerns, while freshwater can still carry silt and mud and damage mechanical, electrical, and interior components. That comparison does not provide a universal repair-cost estimate or show whether a specific vehicle can be repaired. Inspection is needed.
