If a tracking service was already installed, contact it using its instructions. - Contact local police. Use the emergency channel if the theft is in progress or someone is in immediate danger; otherwise follow the local non-emergency reporting instructions. In the United States, the FBI advises calling 911 for immediate danger and reporting vehicle theft to law enforcement. NHTSA says to contact police immediately. - Let authorities handle any tracker lead or recovery. Do not confront a suspected thief or attempt a risky recovery yourself. Give police any location information and follow the recovery provider’s instructions.
In the U.S., NHTSA recommends contacting the insurance company within 24 hours. That is its guidance, not a universal legal deadline; follow your policy and local requirements. The VIN may be available on registration or insurance documents; the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) notes that it can also appear on an insurance or proof-of-insurance card. When speaking with police, keep the account factual and chronological: where you parked, when you last saw the vehicle, when you discovered it was gone, and what checks you made to rule out a move or tow. If a tracker reports a location, tell police when that information was generated and share any useful time-stamped details. Do not go to that location to verify it yourself.
Keep the police reference number, report copy, and related correspondence somewhere you can access them. They help document the incident for the insurance claim. Ask how and when you can get a copy if it is not available at the time you make the report. In the UK, GOV.UK says police provide a crime reference number that you need when contacting your insurer.

How do I make an insurance claim?
Contact your insurer through the method specified in your policy or its official website or app. Tell it the vehicle has been reported stolen and provide the police reference number. Does auto insurance cover car theft?

What if a tracker shows where the car is?

NHTSA describes recovery systems as technology that can help law enforcement locate a stolen vehicle; it does not establish a universal app process. If you have a location report, pass it to police promptly and explain when it was recorded. A location can be useful information for authorities, but it is not a reason to approach a potentially dangerous situation or assume the vehicle is safe to collect. Keep following police and provider instructions if the reported location changes or the signal is no longer current.

What should I do if the car is recovered?
Notify both police and your insurer, then ask who is authorized to collect the vehicle and where it is being held. Follow their instructions before driving it. A stolen car may have damage that is not obvious, and police may need to process it or arrange secure recovery.
- Confirm with police how the vehicle can be released and whether any examination or other procedure must happen first.
- Ask the insurer whether it wants to inspect the car, arrange recovery, or direct repairs.
- Once permitted to inspect it, photograph visible damage and keep relevant receipts and paperwork.
- Arrange an appropriate inspection before driving if there is any concern about damage or safety.
If you discover the car yourself, do not assume that you can simply drive it away. PSNI advises people who locate their car themselves to leave it where it is and notify police. That allows the relevant authorities to give recovery instructions and determine whether examination or other procedures are needed. If the owner takes charge of the vehicle, PSNI recommends having it inspected before driving.
Rules on police storage, collection, fees, forensic examination, and inspection depend on the location. For example, Northern Ireland’s Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) advises people who find their car themselves to leave it where it is and notify police; it also recommends an inspection before driving if the owner takes charge. NICB reports that 35% of recovered stolen vehicles are recovered on the same day and 45% within two days. These figures describe vehicles that were recovered, not the probability that any particular stolen car will be found. The NICB page does not state a year for these figures. UK: vehicle administration after a theft
For vehicles in the UK, GOV.UK says police notify the DVLA when a vehicle is stolen and if it is found. If the insurer pays out, the registered keeper must tell DVLA that the vehicle has been sold to the insurer. If you have a personalised registration and want to retain it, handle that before telling DVLA you no longer own the vehicle. Follow the current GOV.UK instructions for your circumstances: GOV.UK: if your vehicle has been stolen.
These are UK administration steps, not a general instruction for drivers in other countries. If you are outside the UK, check the relevant vehicle-registration authority’s instructions for your location rather than assuming the DVLA process applies.
