What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down in Remote Australia

If your car breaks down in remote Australia, make it visible, stay with it when safe, contact help with a precise location and rely on a route-specific emergency plan.

Move out of traffic if you can, switch on the hazard lights, and make the vehicle easy to see. In an isolated area, remain with the car when it is safe to do so, contact help using every reliable channel available, and conserve your supplies. Leave only when staying exposes you to a more immediate danger such as fire, floodwater or a collision risk.

The sequence below applies across Australia, while some specific personal-safety advice comes from Northern Territory (NT) Police and some roadside guidance from NSW and RACQ. Road access, weather, phone coverage and recovery services vary sharply between routes, so treat the plan as a risk assessment rather than a universal rule.

The first 10 minutes after a breakdown

Prioritise threats in this order: moving traffic, fire or dangerous terrain, medical emergencies, then the mechanical fault. Do not begin repairs until you and your passengers are in a reasonably protected position.

1. Get out of the traffic path

  1. If the car still moves, steer to a breakdown bay or as far to the left as the surface and shoulder allow. Avoid stopping on a blind crest, narrow bridge, soft shoulder or active flood crossing.
  2. Apply the handbrake, select park (or first gear in a manual), and switch on the hazard lights.
  3. Assess traffic speed, visibility, weather, bushfire risk, unstable ground and the position of the vehicle before opening a door.
  4. If remaining inside is safer, keep your seat belt fastened. If you must exit, use the passenger side whenever that puts you farther from moving traffic, and move well clear of the lane.

RACQ and Transport for NSW both emphasise safe positioning, hazard lights and choosing the safer side of the vehicle. Never stand behind or beside the car where a passing vehicle could strike you.

2. Make the car visible

Leave the hazard lights operating if the battery allows. In an isolated breakdown, NT Police public-safety advice also recommends raising the bonnet, provided doing so does not expose you to traffic, heat, smoke or another hazard. Follow the road rules and local conditions; a bonnet, torch or reflective item is useful only if you can deploy it without entering danger.

3. Check people before the vehicle

Look for injuries, heat illness, dehydration, smoke inhalation and panic. Give first aid within your training. If someone is seriously injured or in immediate danger, request emergency assistance through any channel that works rather than waiting for a roadside contractor.

4. Call for assistance

Use roadside assistance if your membership or insurance includes it and the provider services that road. Give the operator the road or track name, direction of travel, nearest kilometre post or landmark, vehicle make and colour, number of occupants and hazards. Tell them if the car is blocking a lane, carrying children, has an injury or is near fire or floodwater.

Try a mobile call, text or data message only where a signal exists. A failed call is not proof that help is unavailable: move the phone to a clear position, try an emergency call where appropriate, and use a satellite communicator, satellite phone or distress beacon if you have one and know how to operate it. Keep the device powered and available for return calls.

Should you stay with the vehicle?

For an isolated breakdown, staying with the vehicle normally gives rescuers a larger, more visible target than a person on foot. NT Police advises not leaving a vehicle when lost or broken down and says to conserve water when away from a main road. This guidance assumes the vehicle is not itself the immediate hazard.

Stay with it when the car is a safe shelter

  • Remain inside with seat belts fastened when traffic, dust, cold, heat or wildlife makes standing outside riskier.
  • Use shade, ventilation and clothing to manage heat or cold, but do not run the engine in a place where exhaust could enter the cabin.
  • Keep water and food under control; record what is available and the likely wait so nobody drinks or eats impulsively.
  • Check the roadside periodically from a protected position, keeping clear of passing vehicles.

Leave only to escape an immediate danger

Fire, rising floodwater, a leaking fuel tank, toxic smoke, a rollover risk or a vehicle stopped in a live traffic lane can change the decision. Move to the safest reachable location, preferably one that remains visible from the road, and take essential water, communications equipment and first-aid supplies if doing so is safe. Do not attempt to walk to a distant settlement without a reliable route, navigation, water and a clear reason that it is safer than remaining findable at the car.

Deal cautiously with people who stop

NT Police advises remaining inside, locking the doors and initially speaking through a partly opened window during an isolated breakdown. Ask the person to contact emergency services or your assistance provider if you are uncertain. Do not unlock the vehicle or accept a ride merely because someone has stopped; make a safety decision based on the situation, visibility and the occupants’ condition.

  • Which communication methods work and when the device may lose power or signal.

Keep the phone or communicator on but conserve battery. If you move, tell the assistance provider or the person monitoring your trip plan exactly where you are going.

Communications: match the device to the problem

WorkSafe NT warns that “Mobile phones cannot be relied upon as an effective means of communication in many locations.” A backup should be selected for the route and the traveller’s ability to use it, not purchased as a generic guarantee of rescue.

Option What it provides Important limits Best planning question
Mobile phone Two-way calls, texts and data where a cellular network reaches. Coverage can disappear for long stretches; battery and handset damage can end access. Where are the known coverage points, and how will the phone be charged?
Satellite phone Two-way voice communication beyond mobile coverage. WorkSafe NT notes that aerial damage or vehicle power failure can affect satellite equipment; it may require a clear view of the sky and user training. Can it be used outside the vehicle, and is there a charged independent power source?
Satellite communicator Two-way text or tracking on supported satellite networks. Message delivery, subscription arrangements, sky view and battery life vary by device; exact performance depends on the model and route. Who will monitor messages and what is the check-in schedule?
Personal locator beacon or EPIRB Emergency distress signalling and location assistance through the appropriate rescue system. It is not routine roadside assistance or a normal conversation channel; activation details, registration and carriage rules must be checked with the current authority. When is the situation serious enough to activate it, and can everyone locate and operate it?

Carry redundancy where the trip warrants it: for example, a charged phone plus a satellite device, with a beacon for a genuine life-threatening emergency. A communicator does not repair the car, and a beacon does not arrange a tow. Test equipment before departure and keep instructions with it.

Before leaving: plan for a long wait

Tell someone your route and deadline

Give a trusted person your route, alternate route, vehicle description, departure time and expected arrival. Agree on a check-in message when you arrive. The NT Government specifically advises sharing destination and arrival plans; an NT Police rescue report also highlights the value of route and timing information when a party becomes overdue. Tell the contact what to do if you miss the deadline, including when to call authorities.

Check the road, weather and vehicle

  • Service the vehicle and confirm it is suitable for the road, load and season.
  • Check current road closures, unsealed-road conditions, river crossings and weather immediately before departure. Conditions can change quickly, particularly during the NT wet season.
  • Inspect tyres, including the spare, pressures, wheel nuts, fluids, battery, belts, lights and recovery points.
  • Plan fuel stops conservatively. Do not assume the next roadhouse, water source or phone signal is available simply because it appears on an old map.

Carry supplies sized to the route

There is no universal Australian water quantity: the right reserve depends on distance, climate, occupants, vehicle, medical needs and how long recovery could take. Carry more than the planned consumption for the route, keep it accessible, and protect it from heat and contamination. Pack food that can be eaten without cooking, a first-aid kit, sun and weather protection, torches, spare batteries or power banks, and a way to start or charge essential devices.

Build a risk-based vehicle kit

Road Safety NT’s remote-vehicle guidance lists a spare tyre, suitable jack and wheel brace, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, emergency triangle and an appropriate communications device among possible equipment. For a longer or more remote trip, it suggests considering a second spare, recovery gear, spare parts, extra food and water, supplementary fuel and another communications device. The list is not a substitute for a trip risk assessment: a short sealed-road journey and a multiday desert track do not need the same load.

Learn to use the jack, wheel brace, compressor, tyre repair equipment and recovery gear before departure. A tool that remains sealed in its packaging is not a recovery plan. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack, and do not attempt a roadside repair in live traffic or unstable ground.

Choosing roadside assistance for a remote route

Membership alone does not prove that a provider can reach your destination. Before departure, check the actual road and state or territory, hours of operation, response arrangements, vehicle and road-type eligibility, distance limits, towing destination and whether off-road recovery is included. Ask what happens when a track is closed, a crossing is impassable or the vehicle is outside the normal service network. Keep the membership number and policy contact details offline.

RACQ recommends contacting roadside assistance after a breakdown, but its general advice does not establish nationwide coverage. Treat every provider’s service area and recovery promise as a contract to verify for your specific journey.

When weather, fire or terrain changes the plan

Floodwater

Do not drive or walk into moving or rising water to escape a delay. If water threatens the vehicle, contact emergency services, move to higher safe ground only if a route is clearly reachable, and take communications equipment and water. A familiar road can become impassable within minutes.

Bushfire or smoke

Smoke can hide traffic and reduce breathing quality. Move away from the fire’s path if authorities direct you or if the vehicle is clearly threatened, but do not abandon a visible safe position merely to search for a shortcut. Call emergency services with the fire direction, wind conditions and your location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extreme heat or cold

Use the vehicle as shade or shelter, limit exertion and ration water deliberately. Heat illness, confusion and exhaustion are emergencies; report symptoms early rather than waiting until a person collapses.

What the road-safety numbers do—and do not—show

RACQ reported that 65% of 1,252 Australian road deaths occurred in regional areas in 2023, attributing the figure to the Australian Road Deaths Database. That statistic covers regional road deaths generally, not breakdowns or remote-travel incidents specifically. It is a useful reminder to treat roadside exposure as a serious traffic risk, not evidence that every remote breakdown ends in a rescue emergency.

Lessons from a remote rescue

In an NT Police and Fire & Emergency Services update about a January 2022 rescue, Senior Sergeant Michael Potts said: “There’s a lot that can be learnt from this, including the importance of EPIRBs and ensuring you don’t underestimate the weather if you’re travelling remotely.” The same release states: “Our message stays the same – equip yourself with a personal emergency beacon, know the conditions and prepare accordingly.” A beacon is most valuable when it complements route notification, supplies, weather checks and a workable two-way communication plan.

After help arrives

  1. Tell the responder your exact condition and any hazards before approaching the vehicle or equipment.
  2. Keep passengers together unless directed otherwise, and account for everyone before the car is moved.
  3. Photograph the vehicle position and damage only if it is safe and does not delay medical care or traffic control.
  4. Notify the person holding your trip plan that you are safe and state whether you are continuing, returning or being transported.
  5. Replace used water, food, medical items and communications batteries before the next leg.

Warning-triangle requirements, beacon registration and activation rules can differ by jurisdiction and equipment type. Confirm the current requirements with the relevant Australian state, territory or national authority rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.
