Missed the vehicle opening at the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel? Check Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) for the next opening in your direction, go to the correct staging area, and be in line at least ten minutes before that opening. Do not assume vehicles can enter continuously or that a late ticket guarantees the next passage. Train movements, weather, maintenance, traffic, and safety operations can change the published plan.
First, find the next opening in your direction
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel alternates vehicle traffic by direction in scheduled windows. After missing a Whittier-bound or Portage-bound opening, use the current Alaska DOT&PF schedule and any alert on that page to identify the next listed opening for your direction. The schedule is operational guidance, not an appointment promise, so the live page and on-site instructions control if conditions change.

The schedule page presents vehicle openings at 15-minute intervals, but that interval does not guarantee that your vehicle will pass at the listed minute. DOT&PF warns that an unscheduled train can create an occasional 15–30-minute delay.

What to do after you miss the opening
1. Confirm which side and direction you need
Before moving, verify whether you are staging on the Whittier side or the Portage side and whether the next window is for your travel direction. A vehicle that arrives at the wrong staging area cannot use a window intended for traffic going the other way. If you are following a navigation app, treat it as a route aid rather than the authority for tunnel timing.

2. Move to the designated staging area
Proceed to the staging area for your direction and join the line. DOT&PF’s instruction is: PLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE AT THE STAGING AREA TEN MINUTES BEFORE THE SCHEDULED OPENING.
Being at the entrance road is not the same as being in the required line. If the next opening is also missed, check the current timetable again instead of assuming you can follow the previous group through.
3. Build in a train-delay buffer
The tunnel carries both railroad and highway traffic, and those uses are scheduled at different times. DOT&PF says unscheduled trains may add 15–30 minutes. Keep fuel, food, medication, child-care plans, and connecting reservations in mind when deciding whether to wait. A published opening can therefore shift even when no general closure has been announced.
4. Ask staff when conditions are unclear
If the display, schedule, queue, or announcement does not match what you expected, ask tunnel personnel before leaving the line. DOT&PF lists 1-877-611-2586 for schedule and safety information and 907-566-2244 as another schedule contact. The schedule page also identifies AM 530 for Whittier and AM 1610 for Portage as information channels. Use the channel serving your side of the tunnel and confirm whether an operational change affects your direction.

Why a listed opening can change
Under 17 AAC 38.015, DOT&PF may, in its discretion, delay, cancel, or adjust public motor-vehicle access or vary from a published time schedule. The regulation identifies railroad operations, traffic demand, safety, weather, maintenance, and the state’s best interest among the reasons for doing so. This authority means a missed opening may be followed by a normal next window, a delayed window, or a cancellation; only current staff and schedule information can distinguish those situations.
Do not ask staff to “hold” an opening for a late vehicle. The published material does not promise that traffic will be held, that an extra passage will be created, or that a listed time is a reserved appointment.
Will a missed ticket still work?
The official material does not establish a refund, ticket transfer, line-priority, or guaranteed next-opening remedy for arriving late. The vehicle toll service’s published information explains prepaid tickets, wallet display, account access, and existing trips, but it does not state a missed-opening entitlement.

Keep your ticket or wallet record available and ask tunnel staff what to do for your specific transaction. For a payment or account problem, contact the toll-ticket support provider through the contact information shown in your purchase portal. Do not buy a second ticket solely because you missed a window until staff or the payment provider tells you whether the original ticket remains usable.
Should you switch to passenger rail?
Passenger rail can be an alternative only if it fits your starting point, destination, timing, luggage, and need for a vehicle in Whittier. The former Portage-to-Whittier shuttle no longer operates. Alaska Railroad does maintain passenger service from Anchorage to Whittier as tourism service, but the available information does not promise a seat immediately after a missed vehicle opening or a connection from the tunnel queue.

Oversized, overweight, or unusual vehicles
Do not apply special-vehicle rules to an ordinary passenger car. The tunnel’s normal operating limits are generally 10 feet wide, 14 feet high, and, according to the page’s best-interest note, 80 feet long. Overweight vehicles are not permitted. Oversized vehicles may require separate special openings with their own constraints.
If your vehicle exceeds a normal limit, consult DOT&PF’s dedicated vehicle-restrictions information before joining a standard queue. The schedule page directs travelers to Alaska Railroad for transportation arrangements when an oversized vehicle cannot use the tunnel. A missed standard opening is not evidence that a special opening will be available later.
Practical plans for common situations
You are five minutes late and the line is still visible
Do not drive around queued vehicles or enter without instruction. Join the directed line if staff permit it, then ask whether the group has closed and when the next directional opening is expected. The ten-minute guidance is designed to get vehicles staged before the opening; it does not create a late-entry exception.

The schedule shows an opening, but no vehicles are moving
Remain in the staging area and seek an update. A train movement or operational adjustment may be causing the delay. Use the schedule and safety number, 1-877-611-2586, or the local radio information channel listed for your side. Avoid treating the lack of movement as proof that the opening has been canceled until staff confirm it.
You have a ferry, tour, flight, or lodging deadline
Recalculate using the next verified tunnel window plus a 15–30-minute train-delay allowance where applicable. If the resulting arrival no longer works, contact the reservation provider while you wait. Switching plans does not create a tunnel-ticket refund or priority right, so ask each provider about its own change terms.
You are traveling in winter at or below freezing
Arrive earlier than the minimum guidance, keep the vehicle ready to move, and expect the opening to be confined to the last five minutes of the scheduled window. Ice, darkness, and weather can affect safe access. Follow current staff instructions rather than relying on a summer arrival pattern.

A missed-opening checklist
- Identify your side of the tunnel and travel direction.
- Check the current seasonal schedule and alerts.
- Note the next listed opening and add time for a possible 15–30-minute train delay.
- Reach the correct staging area at least ten minutes before that opening.
- Keep your vehicle in the directed queue; do not bypass other vehicles.
- Have your prepaid ticket or wallet record ready, but do not assume it guarantees passage after a miss.
- Call 1-877-611-2586 or 907-566-2244 if the timetable, queue, or conditions are unclear.
- Use AM 530 in Whittier or AM 1610 in Portage for the schedule information listed by DOT&PF.
- If considering rail, verify the current Anchorage–Whittier schedule and seats directly with Alaska Railroad.
- If the vehicle is oversized or overweight, check the separate restrictions before proceeding.
What not to assume
- A 15-minute timetable interval is not a guaranteed appointment.
- A missed opening automatically transfers your ticket to the next one.
- Staff will hold traffic for a late arrival or create an extra opening.
- The discontinued Portage shuttle is still available.
- Passenger rail will provide an immediate rescue connection.
- A standard passenger-car rule applies to an oversized, overweight, or unusually long vehicle.
When the next step is uncertain
Use the live DOT&PF schedule first, then confirm with tunnel staff. That order matters because published seasonal hours describe the operating framework, while day-of-travel conditions can alter access. If staff announce a delay or cancellation, follow that instruction even when an older timetable, printed screenshot, or navigation app shows a different time.
