If the used car you want isn’t turning up, don’t let a thin selection push you into buying the wrong one. Keep your essential requirements and total budget fixed, then widen the search around them. Before traveling for any candidate, confirm it is available and get its out-the-door price in writing; before buying, check its history, recalls, warranty terms and mechanical condition.
Decide what can change—and what cannot
Start with the job the car needs to do: how many people it must carry, what cargo it needs to hold, how it will handle your commute and local weather, and whether you need towing or accessibility features. Separate requirements from preferences such as color, trim or a particular convenience feature. Broaden the preferences first; do not compromise on safety, capacity or affordability just to find a listing.

Set a maximum purchase budget, then account for the costs beyond the advertised price: taxes and fees, registration, insurance, fuel and maintenance. The FTC’s used-car guidance recommends considering intended use and budget and researching a vehicle’s features, repair records, safety and mileage before shopping.
Widen the search one step at a time
Try a larger search radius, additional seller types and a short list of genuinely comparable models or model years. Change one preference at a time so you can see what expands the choices without losing the qualities that make a car suitable. Availability is local and changes quickly; a broader search is a method, not a guarantee that a particular car is for sale nearby.

When you find a plausible candidate, contact the seller before making a trip. Ask whether that specific vehicle is physically available, request its VIN and ask for a written out-the-door price that accounts for taxes, fees and optional add-ons. The FTC advises confirming availability and getting the out-the-door price in writing before visiting.
Vet the actual car, not just the listing
Read the Buyers Guide and establish warranty terms
For a dealer vehicle, read its Buyers Guide to determine whether it is sold “as is” or with a warranty, and which systems the guide identifies. Get any promises about repairs or other terms in writing; verbal assurances can be difficult to enforce. The FTC’s used-car guidance explains what the Buyers Guide covers.

Use history reports for history—not diagnosis
A vehicle history report may provide ownership, accident, repair, title, insurance-loss or salvage information, depending on the report. It typically will not identify mechanical problems. The FTC points shoppers to NMVTIS-approved providers for title, insurance-loss and salvage information; other reports may include additional details. Treat a clean-looking report as one useful check, not proof that the car is mechanically sound.

Check recalls and arrange an independent inspection
Check open safety recalls using the VIN, then arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection and request a written report with repair estimates. The FTC recommends an independent inspection even when a car is described as certified or dealer-inspected. If the dealer will not let the car leave the lot, ask whether a mobile inspector can come to it or whether the dealer will take it to an inspection facility. If an independent inspection is refused, consider another seller.

Compare candidates on total cost and fit
When you have more than one real option, compare them using the same criteria rather than treating the easiest listing to find as the best choice.

Do not compare financing on monthly payment alone. A lower payment can result from a longer loan and a higher overall cost. The FTC’s financing guidance recommends comparing loan terms and total costs. The CFPB says buyers can seek preapproval from a bank, credit union or other lender and compare that offer with dealer-arranged financing.

If you are buying online
An online search can extend your reach, but carry out the same checks remotely. Before paying, verify the vehicle and its details with the seller, and confirm delivery arrangements and cancellation terms. For dealer transactions, the FTC’s online car-buying guidance says dealers must provide the Buyers Guide and, if the vehicle does not ship on time, offer cancellation and a prompt refund. That advice is specific to the dealer transactions covered by the FTC guidance; individual circumstances and applicable law can matter.
