If you want an SUV with a conventional, nonhybrid engine, a July 2026 comparison identifies the Toyota Corolla Cross FWD and Nissan Rogue FWD as leading choices, with five more 2026 models on its shortlist: Hyundai Kona, Chevrolet Trailblazer FWD, Hyundai Venue, Volkswagen Taos and Nissan Kicks. The comparison says all seven reach at least 31 mpg combined, but exact ratings depend on trim and drivetrain. Treat the list as a starting point, then confirm the EPA rating for the specific version you plan to buy.
Which nonhybrid SUVs get the best gas mileage?
Capital One Auto Navigator’s July 2, 2026 comparison names the Toyota Corolla Cross and Nissan Rogue at the top of its 2026 nonhybrid SUV shortlist. It also identifies five other models at 31 mpg combined or higher. The source does not provide verified, individual EPA figures for every model, so the list below is not a definitive, independently checked ranking. See the comparison.

These are model names and selected figures from a secondary comparison, not proof that the models are available in every market or that one is the definitive market-wide winner. Use the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov lookup to check the model year, make, model, engine and transmission for the vehicle you are considering. The EPA rating belongs to a specific configuration; do not transfer an FWD number to an AWD version.
How to compare fuel economy fairly
Start with combined MPG, then match your driving
Combined MPG weights city driving at 55 percent and highway driving at 45 percent, making it a useful starting point for mixed driving. If most of your miles are on the highway, compare the highway estimate as well. Car and Driver explains the combined rating.

Keep drivetrain and trim attached to every figure
FWD and AWD versions can have different ratings, as the Corolla Cross and Rogue figures above illustrate. Engine, transmission and trim can also affect which EPA entry matches a vehicle. Compare like with like, and identify the exact configuration whenever you quote an MPG figure.
Consider space and equipment alongside MPG
Fuel economy is one filter, not a complete buying decision. Compare passenger and cargo needs, drivetrain requirements, equipment and price using current information for the exact models and trims. The shortlist does not establish a full ranking for utility, value or overall suitability.

EPA label MPG is not the same as a fleet average
An EPA window-sticker estimate is tied to the vehicle configuration named on the label. It is intended to help compare vehicles, but it should not be confused with the EPA’s Automotive Trends report, which presents estimated real-world fuel economy for vehicle groups. The EPA’s 2025 report explains that its estimated real-world values differ from label values at the time of sale; its related data page describes model-year 2025 values as preliminary. For truck SUVs, it reports 25.7 mpg and 24.7 mpg excluding BEVs and PHEVs. The agency also says truck SUV fuel economy rose 1.0 mpg in model year 2024 to a record 25.7 mpg. What to know when shopping for a used SUV
Look up the exact used model year and configuration rather than applying a current-model-year rating to an older vehicle. EPA guidance says: “As a vehicle’s fuel economy changes very little over a typical 15-year life with proper maintenance, the original EPA fuel economy estimate remains the best indicator of a used vehicle’s average gas mileage.” Read the EPA’s fuel-economy label guidance.

A general SUV MPG ranking may mix gasoline-only vehicles with hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Car and Driver’s 2026 fuel-economy page covers all three powertrain types, so its overall top entries should not be treated as a nonhybrid ranking unless the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are filtered out.
