Why the window may break when the manual release is used
Tesla warns that using a manual door release may open the door without automatically lowering the window. A window that remains raised can contact the door frame or trim as the door opens, creating a risk of damage to the glass or surrounding parts. If the glass has already broken, do not repeatedly open, close, or force the door in an attempt to make the window lower. The owner-manual guidance identifies the risk of glass or trim damage, but does not provide a general procedure for cleaning up broken glass or handling shards embedded in the vehicle. Keep clear of the fragments and prioritize getting occupants out through a safe opening.
Choose the correct instructions for the exact Tesla
Manual-release locations and procedures are not interchangeable across all Tesla vehicles. The relevant instructions can vary by model, model year, front or rear seating position, whether the vehicle has power, and whether collision damage is present. The Model 3 manual also gives model-specific rear-release instructions. A rear-seat passenger should not assume that the front-seat procedure applies to their door, or that every vehicle has the same rear mechanism.

Glass type varies by pane and vehicle
Do not assume all Tesla windows break in the same way. Tesla’s 2021 Model S Emergency Response Sheet states that the windshield, roof glass, and rear liftgate glass on that Model S are laminated safety glass, while the side windows can be either tempered or laminated. That statement is specific to the 2021 Model S document; it should not be generalized to every model year, vehicle, or pane.
The type of glass matters to an emergency exit, but the cited Tesla material does not establish a universally safest window to break or provide a general technique for doing so. A pane that looks similar may have different construction, and damage around a window can change the risks. In a serious entrapment, let emergency responders assess the vehicle and direct extrication whenever possible.
If a door will not open after an impact
A collision can affect both powered and mechanical door operation. Tesla’s collision guidance says doors may fail to unlock or may be blocked from opening after an impact. It identifies several possible extrication routes: use an interior manual release, exit through another door, or break a window. These are possibilities, not a prescribed order that fits every scene.

Try another door only if it appears safe to do so and can be opened without forcing it. If an occupant can get out through a different door, that may avoid the hazards of a damaged window or jammed door. If all exits are blocked, or anyone cannot move safely, call emergency services rather than repeatedly pulling controls or trying to force the door.

Emergency responders can decide how to access the cabin based on the specific vehicle, where the occupants are, the damage, and the glass involved. Tesla’s documentation does not prescribe one pane or one method for every vehicle. If you can communicate with responders, describe the vehicle and the problem clearly and follow their directions.
What to do about broken glass
Broken automotive glass can leave fragments on seats, door trim, the floor, or near the opening. Avoid touching or brushing fragments with bare hands, and avoid moving through a pile of shards if another clear route is available. If glass is embedded in someone’s skin or there is an injury, tell emergency services; do not delay getting help in order to clean the vehicle.
Tesla’s cited owner-manual guidance warns about the risk of damage when a manual release opens a door without lowering the window, but it does not provide a general cleanup or first-aid protocol for broken glass. Several details change which instructions apply, so check them in this order when the situation allows: first, whether the vehicle is safely stopped; second, whether it still has power; third, which door and seating position are involved; and fourth, whether a collision has damaged or blocked the door. Then identify the broken pane and the vehicle’s exact model year before consulting its manual or emergency response sheet.
