How to Evaluate a Car Interior When Controls Move to a Touchscreen

A practical way to assess touchscreen-led car interiors: test common tasks, track attention and reach, and compare like with like.

Evaluate a touchscreen-led car interior by trying the tasks a driver actually performs—not by judging screen size or minimalist styling. For each task, notice how much the driver must look, reach, and monitor feedback; whether the display is visible and reachable from a normal driving position; and how often the task is likely to arise. This gives you a practical comparison without mistaking a parked demonstration or a single menu for a complete safety verdict.

Why touchscreen interiors need a task-by-task evaluation

A large display can look clean and modern while making a common adjustment harder to complete. A driver may have to find a control on screen, move a hand away from a natural position, and look again to confirm the change. Those are different demands, and the burden depends on the task—not simply on whether the vehicle has a touchscreen.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) frames its visual-manual guidance around interaction with in-vehicle electronic devices: looking at a device, manipulating its controls, and/or watching visual feedback. Its human-factors materials also treat driver performance as affected by human capabilities and limitations, the environment, psychology, and vehicle design. That makes actual use a more useful basis for evaluation than styling alone. NHTSA’s 2013 final visual-manual guidelines are voluntary guidance, not a universal consumer score for interior design.

In other words, “touchscreen interior” is not a complete description of how a cockpit works. Two vehicles may both use a display, yet differ in how a driver finds a function, how many choices are required, where the screen sits, and whether the result is apparent without another look. Even within one vehicle, changing a familiar setting and navigating a less familiar menu can place different demands on the driver. The useful question is not whether the cabin has a screen, but what a particular task asks the driver to do.

That distinction also helps avoid two common shortcuts. A large screen is not automatically easy to use just because its contents are prominent, and a clean dashboard is not automatically better because it has fewer visible controls. Conversely, the presence of a touchscreen alone does not establish that an interior is poor or unsafe. Evaluate the interaction and its context rather than treating one styling choice as the conclusion.

Build a representative task list

Start with functions that matter to your own driving. A useful sample might include adjusting climate settings, selecting audio, changing a navigation destination or route, and accessing other vehicle settings. These are practical examples, not an official NHTSA checklist. Distinguish essential driving-related needs from secondary tasks: the 2013 guidelines focus on secondary tasks performed through original-equipment electronic devices.

Include tasks you expect to repeat, not just impressive features you might try once. Frequency matters: an interaction that is demanding but rare does not create the same repeated exposure as a small adjustment made many times. NHTSA’s Human Factors Program Areas overview discusses task demand and exposure as distinct parts of the distraction problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the list specific enough that you can compare it across cars. “Try the climate system” is broad; “find the temperature adjustment and make one change” describes a goal. For audio, define the goal as selecting a type of source or item rather than simply opening the audio screen. For navigation, describe the change you want to make, such as changing a destination or route. The point is not to prescribe a universal set of test tasks, but to make sure you are observing comparable interactions rather than whichever feature happens to be easiest to demonstrate.

It can help to divide your list into two groups: functions you expect to use often and functions you expect to use occasionally. That separation makes frequency visible in your notes. Do not assume that the more complicated-looking task matters most, or that a simple interaction is unimportant; record both how demanding it appears and how often you think it will occur. NHTSA’s materials treat task demand and exposure as separate considerations, so keep them separate in your evaluation too.

Also distinguish what you need to assess from what you might be curious to explore. A long menu tour can make a parked demonstration feel thorough while telling you little about the few tasks you actually need. A short, representative list is easier to repeat in another car and makes the eventual comparison more useful.

Observe each interaction in the same way

For every function, follow the full interaction from the driver’s normal position. Record what must happen to make the desired change, rather than rating the screen by appearance. The observations below are a practical method informed by NHTSA’s task-based approach; they are not a published standardized consumer test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the control: Does the driver need to look at the display to locate the function, or is it readily apparent? Note whether you recognize the control immediately or have to scan the screen and interpret labels or symbols.
  2. Count the interaction: Is the goal achieved in one action, or does it require several menu choices or screen changes? Write down the steps you actually take rather than relying on a general impression that the system is simple.
  3. Check posture and reach: Can the driver touch the control without stretching or abandoning a natural driving position? Note whether the screen’s position makes a control feel close and comfortable or requires a reach away from that posture.
  4. Watch for confirmation: Is visual feedback needed to tell whether the adjustment worked, and does the driver have to look again to verify it? Record whether the result is clear or whether you need another glance or action to confirm the change.
  5. Consider the whole demand: Note the visual attention, hand movement, and mental effort the task appears to require, as well as how often it may be repeated. These are related observations, not interchangeable measures.

This sequence turns a vague impression into a description another shopper can understand. For example, your notes might say that you had to locate the function, make a series of menu choices, reach forward, and inspect the display to verify the result. That wording reports what you observed. It does not claim that the task has a particular safety rating or that every driver will experience it in the same way.

Keep track of the full interaction, not just the tap that changes a setting. Finding the control is part of the task; so is operating it and determining whether the intended result appeared. A control that seems easy once it is already open may still take effort to locate. Likewise, a change that is simple to make may leave you unsure whether it worked until you look again. NHTSA’s visual-manual framing includes looking at the device, manipulating a control, and/or watching visual feedback, which is why these stages belong in the observation.

Consider visual, manual, and cognitive demand together. Visual demand concerns the attention needed to look for and perceive information; manual demand concerns manipulating a control and reaching it; cognitive demand concerns the mental work of identifying the right choice and following the interaction. Available guidance and human-factors materials support considering all three, but they do not offer a consumer formula for combining them. A shopper can describe what each task appears to require without pretending that the notes produce a laboratory measurement.

Keep these notes descriptive. Without a defined method and supporting evidence, observations should not be converted into a numerical safety rating. A task that seems straightforward while parked does not, by itself, establish how demanding it will be while driving.

Check visibility, reach, and legibility

Assess the display from the normal driving position, not from the passenger seat or while leaning toward the dashboard. Ask whether the screen or its placement obstructs the driver’s view, whether information can be seen and perceived, and whether controls are reachable without an awkward movement. NHTSA’s Human Factors Design Guidance covers topics including unobstructed view, ease of seeing and reaching, display position, and text presentation. It is design guidance, not a guarantee that any particular vehicle is safe.

Legibility and reachability are separate checks. A control can be easy to see but uncomfortable to reach, or physically reachable while its label or feedback is difficult to perceive. Note which issue occurs rather than collapsing both into a vague impression that the screen is “good” or “bad.” Also distinguish the display itself from its placement: consider whether the screen’s location blocks the view and whether the information shown can be perceived from the driver’s position.

When checking text presentation, focus on whether you can perceive the information you need in the ordinary posture you would use at the wheel. Do not treat a quick look while parked as proof of performance in every setting or for every driver. The cited design guidance identifies text presentation and display position as design topics; it does not turn an individual shopper’s impression into a formal compliance test.

Reach is similarly more than whether a fingertip can touch the screen. The practical question is whether the intended control can be operated from a normal driving posture without an awkward movement. Describe the reach you experience, but avoid claiming that one posture or arm position will fit every driver. The purpose is to compare the actual layout in the vehicles you are considering and decide whether it suits your needs.

Compare vehicles fairly

Use the same task and interaction goal in each vehicle. If you are comparing climate controls, try the same kind of adjustment; for audio, try to select the same kind of source or item. Keep setup and conditions as similar as practical, and note differences in the number of actions, reach, visual attention, and feedback required.

Separate what you observe while parked from what you can reasonably conclude about use in motion. One menu, one parked demonstration, or one successful adjustment does not establish the demands of every common interaction. This comparison method follows the task-specific logic of NHTSA’s guidance, but it is a practical recommendation—not a standardized consumer protocol published by the agency.

Consistency matters because otherwise the comparison can be misleading. If you test one car using a familiar, simple function and another using an unfamiliar, multi-step setting, the difference may reflect the tasks rather than the interiors. Define the goal first, then attempt the equivalent task in each vehicle. Record when the menus do not offer precisely equivalent options; do not force a false one-to-one comparison where the functions differ.

Use a short, repeatable record for each task: the goal, whether you had to look to find the control, the actions or menu choices, the reach, whether feedback required another look, and how often you expect to use that function. This is not a scoring scheme. It is a way to remember what happened and explain a preference in concrete terms, especially after looking at several vehicles.

Conditions should be comparable where practical, but the result still has limits. A quick dealership visit may not represent every environment, every level of familiarity, or every interaction. Treat a parked evaluation as an observation of parked usability, not proof of driver behavior on the road. If you do test a vehicle on a road, do not deliberately undertake distracting menu tasks to complete your comparison; the framework is for evaluating demands, not for encouraging interaction while driving.

What NHTSA’s guidance does—and does not—tell shoppers

NHTSA’s final 2013 visual-manual guidelines apply to original-equipment in-vehicle electronic devices used by drivers for secondary tasks. They describe a task-based approach that includes eye-glance measurement and acceptance criteria. The agency recommends limiting access while driving to certain inherently distracting tasks and to tasks that do not meet the stated criteria. The document is voluntary guidance; it is not a binding mandate requiring a particular number of physical buttons or a complete ranking of vehicle interiors. Read the final guidance in that scope.

The scope matters. The guidance is not a verdict on every aspect of a cabin, and it is not a universal consumer test that ranks one vehicle’s interior above another. It addresses visual-manual interaction with original-equipment devices for secondary tasks. NHTSA’s task-based treatment includes eye-glance measurement and acceptance criteria, but that does not mean an ordinary shopper’s informal observations reproduce those measurements. Do not present a personal test-drive checklist as if the agency had published or endorsed it.

It is also important not to turn voluntary design guidance into an unsupported claim about a fixed number of physical buttons. The guidelines do not establish that a particular button count is required, nor that every screen task has the same demand. The useful consumer question remains specific: what is the task, what must the driver do, how often might it occur, and what does the interface make visible, reachable, or necessary to confirm?

NHTSA’s broader Human Factors overview explains why interface evaluation belongs in the context of drivers’ capabilities, limitations, and surroundings. For shoppers, the useful implication is to look at how specific interactions work in the actual vehicle rather than inferring quality or safety from screen size, visual minimalism, or the presence of a touchscreen alone.

The guidance is useful as a lens, not a complete answer. It helps identify relevant questions—visual attention, manipulation, feedback, task demand, exposure, visibility and reach—but it does not tell an individual shopper whether a particular interior will feel intuitive or comfortable. Nor does the cited human-factors guidance and research supply a numerical consumer rating, a universal task list, or a named statistic needed for this evaluation. Keep claims proportionate to what you actually observed and to the scope of the sources.

A concise test-drive checklist

  • Choose several functions you are likely to use, including frequent adjustments and occasional settings changes.
  • For each one, note whether you must look to find the control, how many actions it takes, how far you reach, and whether you need to look again for confirmation.
  • Check the display and controls from a normal driving posture for visibility, reach, legibility, and obstruction of view.
  • Record how often you expect to repeat each task; do not treat task demand and exposure as the same thing.
  • When comparing cars, repeat the same tasks under comparable conditions and keep parked observations distinct from claims about driving behavior.
  • Use the notes to explain usability differences, not to assign an unsupported safety score.

Before finishing, look over your notes for gaps. Did you assess more than one kind of function? Did you record the steps needed to achieve the goal rather than just your impression of the screen? Did you distinguish the effort to find and operate a control from the effort to verify the result? Did you keep frequency separate from demand? These questions do not add a formal score; they help make sure your comparison reflects the tasks you set out to evaluate.

If you are choosing between vehicles, use the notes to identify trade-offs that matter to you. One layout may make a task easier to find, another may place a control within more comfortable reach, and a third may provide feedback that is easier for you to perceive. Describe those differences rather than declaring one vehicle categorically safer on the basis of a short demonstration. A practical evaluation is strongest when it is precise about what was observed and equally clear about what it cannot establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I evaluate a car interior with touchscreen controls?

Choose representative functions such as climate adjustment, audio selection, navigation changes, and settings. For each task, observe how you find the control, how many actions it takes, whether you must reach from a natural posture, and whether you need visual feedback to confirm the result. Also record how often you expect to use it. Compare the same task in each vehicle and keep notes descriptive rather than assigning an unsupported safety score.

Are touchscreen car controls distracting?

Available guidance and human-factors materials support evaluating the visual, manual, and cognitive demands of particular interactions, along with how often they occur. They do not support treating every touchscreen or every task as having the same distraction burden. NHTSA’s voluntary 2013 visual-manual guidelines focus on original-equipment electronic devices used for secondary tasks; they are not a universal consumer ranking of interiors.

What should I look for when test-driving a car with a touchscreen?

From a normal driving position, check whether the display obstructs your view, whether information is perceptible, and whether controls are visible and reachable. For a few representative tasks, note the steps, reach, need to look for feedback, and expected frequency. A parked demonstration is an observation of parked usability, not proof of how every interaction will work while driving.

Does NHTSA require cars to have a certain number of physical buttons?

The cited 2013 NHTSA visual-manual guidelines are voluntary guidance and do not establish a binding requirement for a particular number of physical buttons. They address task-based visual-manual interaction with original-equipment devices used for secondary tasks.

Can a parked touchscreen demonstration prove that a control is safe to use while driving?

No. A parked demonstration can show how a task is laid out and what steps, reach, or feedback it appears to require. It does not establish the demands of using it in motion, and one task does not represent every common interaction.

The Bottom Line

Judge a touchscreen interior by the tasks it asks a driver to perform: how much looking, reaching, decision-making, and feedback-checking each requires, and how often the task may arise. Compare the same functions from a normal driving position, note visibility and reach, and keep parked observations separate from claims about driving behavior. NHTSA’s voluntary guidance is a useful task-based reference—not a consumer score, a fixed-button mandate, or a substitute for a careful comparison.
