If your CNG car will not start, or it starts but stays on petrol (gasoline) instead of changing to CNG, first check the fuel-mode display and the fuel available, then follow the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year, and market. Some bi-fuel cars start on petrol and switch only after programmed conditions are met; a delay is not automatically a fault. If a CNG leak is suspected or a fuel-system warning tells you to stop, do not keep trying to start or drive the car—follow the manual’s emergency instructions and arrange assistance.
First, identify what the car is doing
“Won’t start” and “won’t switch fuels” are different problems. A car that does not start may have a starting, fuel, ignition, or system-warning issue. A car that starts on petrol but does not move to CNG may be behaving as designed, waiting for warm-up or another condition, or reporting a problem with the selected fuel system.

Before changing settings or trying again, note what the instrument panel says, which fuel mode is selected, whether the engine starts, and whether a warning lamp or message appears. The relevant controls, start-up sequence, indicators, and allowable starting attempts vary among vehicles. The model-specific examples below are from manufacturer manuals; they are not instructions to apply to a different car.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. A selector may request CNG while the engine is still running on petrol, and an automatic system may change over only after its programmed conditions are met. Record both the selector setting and any active-fuel indication if the display provides one. If the message is unfamiliar, use the manual’s exact description rather than inferring a fault from the lamp or selector alone.

What to do, in order
-
Make the car safe to start
Use the starting precautions in your own owner’s manual. For example, the cited Maruti New WagonR CNG supplementary manual instructs the driver to apply the parking brake fully and put the transmission in Neutral before starting. That is specific to its guidance; do not assume it is the correct procedure for every transmission or vehicle.
Do not improvise a start-up sequence based on another car. Even basic controls and mode-selection behavior can differ, so begin with the manual for the exact vehicle rather than repeatedly changing settings.
-
Check the selected mode and the displayed status
Look for the selected fuel mode and any indication of which fuel is currently in use. These may not be the same: a selector can request CNG while the engine is still operating on petrol, or the car may remain in petrol mode by design. In the cited Maruti system, the choices are Petrol, Auto, and Forced CNG. In Auto, the engine starts on petrol and changes over after its programmed warm-up condition is met; Petrol mode stays on petrol. That manual also says not to press the accelerator to make the changeover happen.

Do not copy a switch position, accelerator procedure, or interpretation of an indicator from another vehicle’s manual. In particular, do not assume that selecting a forced or manual mode means a different vehicle can safely be made to change fuels immediately.
-
Check the fuel and the conditions the display identifies
Confirm that the fuel selected for use is available, and read any message rather than repeatedly toggling modes. The 2016 Chevrolet Impala manual says its “FUEL MODE UNAVAILABLE” message can be associated with low fuel in the selected system, insufficient engine warm-up, a gasoline-system maintenance routine, cold-start conditions, or a tank valve that cannot open fully. These are possible explanations for that vehicle, not a universal checklist for all CNG cars.

Use the display and manual to determine whether the car is reporting low or unavailable selected fuel, a wait condition, or a system warning. The cited vehicle manuals do not establish a universal way to check fuel availability or reset a message; use the vehicle’s own instructions and do not treat a persistent warning as resolved simply because you changed the selector.
-
Allow for a normal changeover delay where the manual describes one
A switch to CNG may not happen immediately. The cited GM Silverado/Sierra bi-fuel manual says changeover can take longer below freezing and may be delayed under heavy load. Check the manual for your vehicle’s permitted conditions and indicator behavior; do not force the transition or treat a delay alone as proof of a particular failed part.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Temperature and engine warm-up are not interchangeable explanations for every vehicle. One cited manual describes a programmed warm-up condition in Auto mode; another describes slower changeover below freezing and under heavy load. These examples show why the correct comparison is between your car’s current conditions and its own operating instructions, not a general expectation that all CNG vehicles change over at the same time.
-
Stop if a warning or possible leak makes continued use unsafe
Take a CNG-related warning seriously and follow the exact instruction for that message. In the cited Maruti manual, a blinking CNG malfunction lamp while the ignition is on and the engine is off indicates that the fuel lid is open, and the vehicle will not start. For the 2016 Impala’s “SERVICE FUEL SYSTEM PARK IN OPEN AREA” warning, GM instructs the owner to park outdoors, not start, refuel, or drive, and have the vehicle towed to an authorized dealer.
The 2016 Silverado/Sierra bi-fuel manual says not to start or drive if a leak is suspected and to arrange immediate towing and authorized inspection. Its instruction is direct: “If you suspect a leak, do not start the engine or drive the vehicle.” Follow the emergency guidance in your own manual; do not rely on a warning interpretation from another model. If the manual calls for a tow, do not try one more start to see whether the warning clears.

Respect the manual’s cranking limit
Do not keep turning the starter after repeated failures. The cited Maruti manual describes a model-specific protection procedure: the starter stops after an attempt lasting more than 12 seconds, and the manual directs the driver to wait more than 30 seconds before another attempt. After several unsuccessful attempts, it says to check the fuel and ignition system or consult an authorized workshop. Those timings are not a general rule for other CNG cars; use your vehicle’s stated limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. The 12-second and more-than-30-second figures are manufacturer instructions for the cited New WagonR CNG, not a recommended universal cranking cycle. If your manual specifies a different limit, follow that instead. If it does not provide a procedure you can identify, avoid indefinite attempts and seek help rather than guessing.
Why a CNG car may start on petrol but not change over
Many drivers select CNG expecting the engine to run on it immediately. That expectation does not fit every bi-fuel system. In the cited Maruti example, Auto mode starts the engine on petrol and changes to CNG after the programmed warm-up condition. A delay can therefore be part of the start-up strategy rather than a defect.
Conditions can also affect changeover on particular models. The cited GM manuals describe low or unavailable fuel in the selected system, a cold engine or cold-start conditions, a gasoline-system maintenance routine, low ambient temperatures, heavy load, and a tank valve that cannot open fully as relevant to their vehicles. The manuals do not establish that any one of these explains a different car’s behavior. If the vehicle continues to display an unavailable-fuel or service message after the conditions described in its manual are satisfied, arrange diagnosis rather than guessing at a repair.
A useful comparison between CNG systems therefore asks five questions: Does this model start on petrol/gasoline or directly on CNG? Does the selector show the requested mode, the active fuel, or both? What warm-up, temperature, or load conditions affect transition? What exactly does its warning lamp or message mean? What cranking limit and leak response does its manual specify? The cited manuals differ on these points, and do not support borrowing one model’s timing, switch operation, or warning interpretation for another.

How the cited manuals differ
| Vehicle manual | Start and changeover details established | Relevant warning or response | Scope of the guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti New WagonR CNG Supplementary Owner’s Manual | Petrol, Auto, and Forced CNG modes are described. Auto starts on petrol and changes after the programmed warm-up condition; the manual says not to press the accelerator to change over. | A blinking CNG malfunction lamp with ignition on and engine off indicates the fuel lid is open and the vehicle will not start. The manual gives a starter protection procedure and directs the owner to check the fuel and ignition system or consult an authorized workshop after several failed attempts. | Applies to the cited Maruti guidance. The publication year is not stated in the retrieved manual material. |
| 2016 Chevrolet Impala owner’s manual | “FUEL MODE UNAVAILABLE” may relate to selected-system fuel level, warm-up, a gasoline-system maintenance routine, cold-start conditions, or a tank valve that cannot open fully. | For “SERVICE FUEL SYSTEM PARK IN OPEN AREA,” GM says to park outdoors, not start, refuel, or drive, and have the vehicle towed to an authorized dealer. | Applies to the cited 2016 Impala and its messages, not every GM or CNG vehicle. |
| 2016 Chevrolet Silverado/Sierra Bi-Fuel supplemental owner manual | Changeover may take longer below freezing and can be delayed under heavy load. | If a leak is suspected, the manual says not to start or drive and to arrange immediate towing and authorized inspection. | Applies to the cited Silverado/Sierra bi-fuel guidance. Do not transfer its indicators or operating conditions to another vehicle. |
The differences matter in practice. The Maruti example explains a normal petrol-to-CNG sequence and a particular lamp condition; the Impala example names reasons for an unavailable-fuel message and a specific stop-use warning; the Silverado/Sierra example identifies temperature and load effects and gives leak instructions. None of these manuals establishes one universal CNG start procedure, a common changeover delay, or a single meaning for “CNG malfunction” across manufacturers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop troubleshooting and get help
- Stop and arrange towing or authorized inspection if you suspect a CNG leak or your manual gives a stop-use instruction for the warning shown.
- Stop repeated starting attempts when you reach the limit stated in the vehicle’s manual, or when several attempts have failed and the manual directs you to seek service.
- Use an authorized CNG service provider when a fuel-system warning persists, the car will not change modes under the conditions its manual specifies, or you cannot confirm what a displayed message means.
- Have the vehicle details ready: make, model, year, country or market, selected mode, message or lamp behavior, whether it starts, and what the manual says about the condition. This helps avoid applying another vehicle’s procedures to yours.
There is no supported one-size-fits-all repair to recommend here: the title does not identify a vehicle or fault, and a scanner, selector part, replacement component, or repair manual would depend on those details. A persistent fault needs diagnosis by an authorized CNG service provider rather than a guessed part or a product recommendation.
What not to assume
- A CNG selection does not necessarily mean the engine starts directly on CNG; some cited bi-fuel systems start on petrol first.
- A delay does not necessarily mean the system has failed; warm-up, temperature, and load can affect changeover on the cited models.
- A warning message or lamp does not have one universal meaning across CNG vehicles.
- Starter timing, switch operation, and emergency steps from one manual are not safe substitutes for the instructions for another vehicle.
- Do not attempt to diagnose a suspected leak by starting the engine or driving the car.
Information needed for vehicle-specific advice
Because the correct procedure depends on the car, useful follow-up details are the make, model, year, and country or market, along with whether the engine starts, the selected and displayed fuel modes, and the exact warning message or lamp behavior. Include whether the issue occurs during a cold start or under a condition mentioned in the manual, and what the manual says about permitted starting attempts. Until those details are known, the safest useful guidance is to follow the owner’s manual and use an authorized CNG service provider for persistent starting or fuel-system problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my CNG car start on petrol and stay there?
Some bi-fuel systems are designed to start on petrol/gasoline and switch to CNG only after programmed conditions, such as warm-up, are met. The cited Maruti New WagonR CNG manual describes that behavior in Auto mode. Check your own manual for its start-up logic and fuel-mode display.
Can I press the accelerator or keep switching modes to make the car change to CNG?
Do not assume that will help. The cited Maruti manual says not to press the accelerator to make its Auto-mode changeover happen, and other vehicles may use different controls. Follow the exact procedure in your manual; do not force a changeover.

Can cold weather or engine load delay a CNG changeover?
The cited 2016 Silverado/Sierra bi-fuel manual says changeover can take longer below freezing and may be delayed under heavy load. The cited manuals establish model-specific conditions, not a universal delay or timing for all CNG vehicles.
What should I do if a CNG leak is suspected?
Do not start or drive the vehicle. The cited Silverado/Sierra bi-fuel manual directs the owner to arrange immediate towing and authorized inspection if a leak is suspected. Follow the emergency instructions in your own vehicle’s manual.
How long should I crank a CNG car that will not start?
Use the limit in the vehicle’s owner manual. The cited Maruti New WagonR CNG guidance specifies a starter cutoff after an attempt lasting more than 12 seconds and a wait of more than 30 seconds before another attempt; those figures are not a general rule. After several failed attempts, follow the manual’s direction to seek diagnosis.
The Bottom Line
Check the selected and active fuel indications, available fuel, and exact message, then follow the owner’s manual for your make, model, year, and market. Some cars start on petrol and switch only when programmed conditions are met. Respect the manual’s cranking limits, and stop and arrange the specified assistance if a leak is suspected or a warning tells you not to start or drive.
