Estimate home charging cost by multiplying the electricity drawn for the car, in kilowatt-hours (kWh), by the electricity rate that applies when it charges. For a driving-cost estimate, calculate the car’s energy use from your miles and its consumption rating, then use your own utility bill or tariff—not a generic rate. A monthly estimate based on your usual driving is generally more useful than assuming you charge an empty battery to full.

The same method can answer several different questions: what a particular session may cost, how much charging adds to a monthly bill, or what the car costs to run per mile. Choose the period and measure of cost that match your question, then keep one-time equipment and installation expenses separate from recurring electricity use.

The basic formula

Charging cost = electricity used (kWh) × applicable electricity price ($/kWh). For example, 20 kWh charged at $0.15 per kWh costs $3 in variable electricity charges. This estimates the energy-related cost; it does not automatically include any change in fixed fees or other tariff charges.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) presents the same relationship for a charging session: determine the electricity needed, then multiply by the rate. Its examples are useful demonstrations of the arithmetic, not current universal prices or predictions for every EV. AFDC’s home-charging cost guidance explains the method.

Units help catch mistakes: kWh is an amount of energy, while kW describes how quickly energy is delivered. A rate quoted in cents per kWh must be converted to dollars per kWh if you want the answer in dollars. For instance, 10.7 cents/kWh is $0.107/kWh. Multiply kWh by the rate once; do not multiply by the charger’s kW rating as well.

Estimate cost from how much you drive

For a weekly or monthly budget, start with the miles you expect to drive and the vehicle’s energy consumption. If the vehicle rating is in kWh per 100 miles:

Energy used (kWh) = miles driven × (vehicle kWh/100 miles ÷ 100)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then multiply that energy by the applicable electricity rate. If the car is rated in miles per kWh instead, divide the miles driven by that efficiency figure to estimate energy use.

For a per-mile estimate, multiply the car’s kWh per mile by the applicable price per kWh. If the rating is in kWh per 100 miles, divide it by 100 first. The resulting figure can be expressed in dollars per mile or cents per mile. A miles-per-kWh rating works too: divide the electricity rate by miles per kWh. These approaches are two forms of the same calculation, not separate fees.

Example: 1,000 miles in a month

At 27 kWh per 100 miles, 1,000 miles imply 270 kWh (1,000 × 27 ÷ 100) before any measurement adjustment. At a flat $0.15/kWh, that would be $40.50 in variable electricity charges (270 × $0.15). Both the vehicle efficiency and rate here are example inputs; substitute your car’s figure and your current residential rate.

For a practical estimate, use the period that fits your question: a typical session, a week, or your usual month of driving. A full-battery calculation answers a different question from the likely cost of your everyday charging, because most drivers do not necessarily recharge from empty to full each time.

Example: a session or cost per mile

If a charging session draws 15 kWh and the applicable rate is $0.1268/kWh, the energy charge is $1.902, or about $1.90. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program uses this arithmetic in a 2025 example for federal workplace charging; it illustrates the calculation, not a residential rate recommendation. For a separate per-mile illustration, AFDC’s inputs of 27 kWh/100 miles and $0.107/kWh imply about $0.0289 per mile, or roughly 3 cents. Those example inputs are not a current universal rate or a promise about every vehicle.

Use the rate that actually applies to your home

Check your latest electricity bill and your utility’s current residential tariff. The rate can vary with utility, season, time of day, and plan. Identify the kWh-based supply and delivery charges that apply during the hours you expect to charge. If your plan has different time-of-use (TOU) prices, estimate the energy charged in each period and multiply each portion by its own rate.

Some utilities offer residential TOU rates or other EV-related incentives, but availability and terms vary. A lower overnight energy price does not by itself prove that switching plans will reduce your total bill. Compare current plan terms against when you actually charge and, when a plan change affects the rest of the home, consider the household’s overall electricity use as well as the car’s. Your utility is the authority on its current residential rates. DOE’s rate guidance describes energy charges that may vary by time or season, fixed monthly charges, and demand charges in some rate structures; verify which, if any, apply to your residential tariff.

Separate variable energy charges from fixed charges

For the incremental cost of charging, count charges that change when you use additional kWh. Do not divide an existing monthly fixed fee across the car’s energy as though charging caused that fee. If changing plans or adding service changes a fixed charge, include that change in a separate whole-bill comparison rather than disguising it as a per-kWh charging cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check how your bill presents supply and delivery. A supply price alone may not represent all variable charges that change with each additional kWh. Use the relevant variable kWh-based components under your current tariff, and avoid including unrelated taxes or fees unless they actually vary with the added electricity or your comparison explicitly includes them. The goal is to estimate the bill impact of charging, not to assign every household bill item to the vehicle.

How to compare a different electricity plan

To test whether an EV-focused or TOU plan could help, compare more than the lowest advertised off-peak rate. First note the variable price in each time period and season, then any monthly fixed charge or other tariff cost that would change if you switched. Next estimate how much energy the car is likely to use and when it is realistically plugged in. Finally, consider the rest of the household’s use if the new plan prices all household electricity differently. A low overnight rate can be useful if charging can happen then, but the complete terms and the household’s actual schedule determine the bill result. Check current conditions and eligibility with the utility before relying on any incentive.

Worked examples from federal guidance

Federal examples show how much the result depends on the inputs:

  • About 3 cents per mile: AFDC illustrates this using electricity at 10.7 cents/kWh and vehicle consumption of 27 kWh/100 miles. Those are example inputs published on a page whose publication year is not stated; 10.7 cents is not a current national rate.
  • About $6 for a full recharge: AFDC uses the same 10.7-cent rate for a 54 kWh battery assumed to be fully depleted. This is an illustrative empty-to-full calculation, not a typical monthly cost.
  • $1.90 for 15 kWh: DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program gives the arithmetic 15 kWh × $0.1268/kWh = $1.90 in a 2025 federal workplace-charging appendix. The example is not a recommended residential rate.

These examples are useful for checking your arithmetic. They should not replace your local rate, your vehicle’s consumption, or your own charging data. See the AFDC examples and DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program guide.

Improve the estimate with measured electricity use

A vehicle efficiency rating estimates energy associated with driving; the home pays for electricity drawn from the household supply. Those figures are not necessarily identical. The available federal guidance does not establish a universal charging-loss percentage, so do not add an assumed percentage to every calculation.

If you can obtain a reliable figure for electricity drawn to charge the car, use it directly: measured charging kWh × the applicable rate. Depending on your setup, useful data may come from a household meter, a charger’s energy report, or another reliable measurement. EPA notes that some advanced home chargers can track and analyze energy use; buying a charger with that feature is optional if you already have dependable measurements. EPA’s home-charging overview discusses charger features and installation considerations.

Use measurements for the same period as the price estimate. If a charger report shows total energy over a month, match it to the rates and charging periods for that month; if you only have a vehicle’s efficiency rating, combine that rating with mileage and call the result an estimate. Measurement can make the energy input more specific, but it does not remove the need to apply the right tariff. With multiple TOU periods, total session or monthly kWh alone may not be enough to calculate the bill unless you also know when that energy was drawn.

Keep equipment and installation out of the recurring electricity estimate

Charger hardware, installation labor, electrical-panel or service upgrades, permits, and incentives are separate from the ongoing cost of electricity. A one-time installation expense can matter to the total cost of home charging, but it is not part of the per-session kWh calculation. EPA provides illustrative equipment and installation ranges, not guaranteed current prices; the actual scope and cost depend on the home and work required. Get a local quote and check current incentive rules in your area rather than assuming an incentive is available or that a published range is a current offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Level 1 and Level 2 are home-charging options. A charger’s power affects how quickly it can deliver energy; it does not by itself make each kWh cheaper. Before adding equipment, consider whether the charger fits your needs and whether the home’s electrical capacity is suitable. EPA recommends using an electrician for a new circuit and checking local permit and inspection requirements.

Some chargers offer features such as energy-use tracking or off-peak scheduling. These can be useful for people who want charging data or whose utility tariff rewards shifting use to particular hours, but they are features to evaluate rather than requirements for estimating cost. Confirm that any scheduling feature suits the utility’s current rate windows and your driving routine. Do not choose a charger on the assumption that greater power lowers the per-kWh price; speed and electricity price are different considerations.

A practical monthly estimate, step by step

  1. Choose a period. Use your typical month of driving for a budget, or choose one charging session if that is the question you need answered.
  2. Get your miles. Use your usual monthly mileage or a realistic forecast for the selected period.
  3. Find the vehicle consumption. Use the specific car’s kWh/100-mile or miles-per-kWh figure. If you have reliable measured charging-energy data for the same period, use that instead.
  4. Calculate energy. For kWh/100 miles, multiply miles by the rating and divide by 100. For miles/kWh, divide miles by the rating.
  5. Check the applicable tariff. Use your current residential supply and delivery rates for the hours and season when charging occurs. With a TOU plan, divide estimated charging energy across its time periods.
  6. Multiply and total. Multiply each energy amount by its matching rate, then add the results. Keep units consistent: kWh × dollars per kWh = dollars.
  7. List other costs separately. If you are comparing the complete economics of home charging, show equipment, installation, changed plan fees, and any confirmed incentives as separate items.

A simple worksheet can make the estimate easy to update: write down the period, expected miles, vehicle consumption, estimated kWh, each applicable rate, and the resulting variable energy cost. If the rate changes during the period, use one line per time or seasonal band. Keep any fixed monthly plan difference or one-time installation quote on a separate line so it is clear which figures are recurring and which are not.

Common estimate errors to avoid

  • Using an example rate as if it were yours: the AFDC’s 10.7-cent example is not a current national average. Read your utility’s current tariff.
  • Confusing a full charge with a normal month: an empty-to-full battery calculation may not reflect how much energy you actually buy for the car.
  • Applying the wrong time period’s price: where rates change by hour or season, match the estimate to likely charging hours and the relevant season.
  • Counting fixed charges as incremental charging cost: include a fixed charge only when the charging decision or plan change actually changes it, and show that separately.
  • Assuming off-peak charging always saves money: compare the full current tariff, any changed fees, and your likely charging behavior before switching.
  • Adding an unsupported loss factor: do not invent a universal percentage. Use measured electricity drawn if available, or label a vehicle-rating calculation as an estimate.
  • Mixing one-time and recurring costs: installation and hardware belong in a separate upfront-cost line, not in the recurring electricity arithmetic.
  • Confusing charging power with price: a higher-power charger can deliver energy faster, but does not make each kWh cost less by itself.
  • Using only the advertised supply rate: check which variable supply and delivery charges apply under the residential tariff, and do not mistake an existing fixed fee for a charge caused by the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

There is no single price that applies to every home. Multiply the kWh drawn for the car by the variable electricity rate that applies when it charges. For example, 20 kWh at $0.15/kWh is $3 in variable energy charges. Use your current residential tariff and actual or estimated charging energy for a realistic figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I estimate monthly home charging cost?

Start with your usual monthly miles and the vehicle’s consumption. At 27 kWh/100 miles, 1,000 miles imply 270 kWh before measurement adjustment; at $0.15/kWh, that is $40.50 in variable charges. Replace both example inputs with your car’s consumption and your applicable current rate. If reliable measured charging kWh is available for the month, use it directly.

Is a full-battery recharge estimate the same as my monthly charging cost?

No. A full-charge calculation estimates a particular empty-to-full scenario, while a monthly estimate reflects the energy used for your actual driving and charging routine. AFDC’s example of about $6 uses a 54 kWh battery assumed fully depleted and a 10.7-cent/kWh example rate. It is illustrative, not a typical monthly bill or a current universal price.

Should I use the car’s efficiency rating or the charger’s energy report?

Use a reliable charger or household measurement of electricity drawn when available, especially if you want the energy billed by the home for a particular period. A vehicle rating combined with mileage is a useful estimate, but is not necessarily identical to electricity drawn from the home. Federal guidance does not establish a universal charging-loss percentage, so do not add one automatically.

Will charging overnight or switching to a TOU plan always save money?

No. TOU prices and plan terms vary. Compare the current rates in each time window, any fixed charge or other tariff cost that changes, your likely charging schedule, and—if the plan affects all household use—the household’s overall electricity consumption. Verify current terms with your utility before switching or counting an incentive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a charger with energy monitoring to calculate the cost?

No. Monitoring is optional. EPA notes that some advanced home chargers can track and analyze energy use, but another dependable measurement can serve the same purpose. Charger power affects how quickly energy is delivered; it does not by itself make each kWh cheaper.

Are installation and charger costs part of the cost per charge?

They are separate from the recurring kWh-based electricity cost. Hardware, labor, panel or service upgrades, permits, and incentives may matter when comparing total home-charging economics, but should be listed separately. Get a local installation quote and check current local incentive eligibility; illustrative published ranges are not guaranteed current prices.

The Bottom Line

For a realistic home EV charging estimate, calculate the electricity the car uses over the period you care about and multiply by the variable rate that applies during charging. Use your utility’s current tariff, account for time-of-use periods when relevant, and use measured charging kWh if you have a reliable reading. Keep fixed plan changes, equipment, installation, and incentives separate from recurring energy cost.
