Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your car is suddenly using more gas, first check whether the change is real: compare similar trips and fuel-fill measurements, then inspect tire pressure and consider recent changes in driving, weather, load, or maintenance. A drop by itself does not identify a failed part; if it persists or comes with a warning light or change in how the car runs, have it diagnosed.
Confirm that fuel economy has actually changed
Compare more than one tank if possible, using the same calculation method. For a miles-per-gallon calculation, record miles driven and gallons added at each fill; compare like-for-like periods rather than a single unusual trip. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) notes that fuel economy varies with driving, vehicle mechanical condition, and the environment. DOE fuel-economy guidance
- Were recent trips shorter, slower, or more congested than usual?
- Have you driven faster, idled more, or carried extra passengers or cargo?
- Has the temperature changed, or has your route shifted from highway to city driving?
- Did you calculate economy the same way and fill under comparable conditions?
These comparisons help separate a temporary change in use from a persistent drop that needs closer attention.
Check tire pressure first
Measure pressure when the tires are cold and compare it with the vehicle-specific specification, usually on the driver-side doorjamb placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the recommended setting. A digital tire-pressure gauge can help you make this check; it measures pressure, not the cause of other fuel-economy problems.

DOE estimates that properly inflated tires improve mileage by 0.6% on average and up to 3% in some cases; it estimates that a 1 psi pressure drop across all four tires can lower mileage by 0.2%. These are general estimates, not a prediction for an individual vehicle. DOE vehicle-maintenance guidance
Review changes in driving and load
Higher speeds, aggressive acceleration and braking, stop-and-go traffic, idling, and cargo carried on the roof can all increase fuel use. DOE says mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. It also estimates that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic; actual effects depend on the vehicle and conditions. - Multi-Functions - Practical Multi-Functions OBD2 code reader features built-in OBD2 DTC lookup library, which help you to determine the cause of the engine light, read code, erase code, view freeze frame, I/M ready, vehicle information, data flow, real-time curve, get vehicle speed information, calculate load value, engine coolant temperature, get engine speed.
- Wide Capability - Supports 9 protocols compatible with most 1996 US-Based, 2000 EU-Based and Asian cars, and newer OBD II & CAN domestic or import vehicles. Supports 6 languages - English,German, Dutch, Spanish, French, Italian.
- 2.8" LCD Display - Designed with a clear display 2.8" Large LCD screen - white backlight and contrast adjustment. No need any battery or charger, OBD reader gets the power directly from your vehicle through the OBDII Data Link Connector.
- Compact Design - Car diagnostic scanner is equipped with a 2.5 feet long cable and made of a very thick flexible insulator. There are 6 buttons on OBD2 Scanner:scroll up/down,enter/exit and buttons that quick query VIN vehicle number& the DTC fault code.
- ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.
Think about what changed recently: a new commute, faster cruising, more time in traffic, longer warm-up idling, or a roof rack or box. If conditions return to normal, compare subsequent tanks before concluding that the car has a mechanical fault.
Factor in colder weather
Cold temperatures can reduce fuel economy, especially when trips are short. In controlled laboratory testing, DOE found that a conventional gasoline vehicle’s city fuel economy at 20°F was about 15% lower than at 77°F. This test result is not a guaranteed real-world reduction for every car or route. DOE guidance on cold-weather fuel economy

Review maintenance, but do not guess at a repair
A serious maintenance problem can affect fuel economy, but the same symptom can have different causes. DOE identifies a faulty oxygen sensor as one example of a serious issue to fix; that does not mean an oxygen sensor is responsible in any particular car. If the drop continues, diagnosis should precede parts replacement.
Check service items against the owner’s manual
Use the manufacturer’s specified motor-oil grade. DOE estimates that using the recommended grade can improve mileage by 1%–2%; the correct grade depends on the vehicle. DOE also estimates an average 4% mileage improvement from fixing a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle or one that has failed an emissions test, with results varying by repair and repair quality. Do not expect every air-filter change to restore mileage
For modern fuel-injected, computer-controlled gasoline engines and diesel engines, DOE says replacing a clogged air filter does not improve fuel economy, although it can improve acceleration. Older carbureted vehicles are an exception. Replace or inspect the filter according to the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, not as a guaranteed fix for a sudden mileage drop. DOE vehicle-maintenance guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when to arrange a diagnosis
Arrange professional diagnosis if the lower fuel economy persists after you have checked measurement, tires, driving conditions, weather, and routine maintenance—or if it appears with a warning light or a change in drivability. A mechanic can assess the vehicle and determine whether a fault is present; the fuel-economy symptom alone cannot select the repair.
