Don’t judge a bike by its odometer alone: maintenance, storage, wear and documented history matter just as much. This U.S.-focused guide is general advice—use the owner’s manual for the exact model year for specifications such as tire pressure and service intervals.
Before you visit: verify the motorcycle and the seller’s claims
Start by comparing motorcycles of the same model and similar model years. Consider the intended use, condition, maintenance and storage history, repair evidence and total ownership cost—not just the asking price. Budget for insurance, registration, transport, routine maintenance and any immediate work the bike may need.

Ask for the details you will need to check
Ask the seller for the complete VIN, model year, odometer reading, ownership and title status, maintenance records, crash or repair history, modifications, storage history and reason for sale. These answers help you plan an inspection, but they do not replace checking the documents and motorcycle yourself.
Check recalls and available history by VIN
Enter the VIN in Harley-Davidson’s recall lookup and check applicable official government recall resources. Harley-Davidson says its database contains recall information beginning in July 1999; that is the database’s coverage start, not a guarantee that every record for every motorcycle is complete. Ask an authorized dealer to verify whether any open recall work has been completed rather than relying only on the seller’s assurance.

Use the relevant jurisdiction’s authoritative process to check title and lien status. A motorcycle history report may add accident or repair information, but Harley-Davidson notes that a report may not be available for every private sale. Treat any report as one source of information, not a guarantee of complete history.
How many miles is too many on a Harley-Davidson?
There is no single odometer number that makes a used Harley-Davidson a bad buy. Interpret mileage alongside service records, ownership and use, storage, and the bike’s actual condition. Harley-Davidson’s used motorcycle guidance notes that a well-maintained higher-mileage motorcycle may be a better choice than a neglected low-mileage one.
Ask for receipts or other evidence of maintenance and compare the work documented with the service schedule for that exact model and year. Pay attention to wear that may not fit the stated mileage and ask about unexplained gaps or repairs. Check tire age as well as tread: Harley-Davidson’s mileage guide says professionals recommend replacing motorcycle tires more than six years old. Because the guide does not identify those professionals or date the recommendation, check current advice from the tire maker and consult the owner’s manual or a qualified technician.

Inspect the motorcycle cold and methodically
If possible, arrange to see the bike before it has been warmed up. A cold start lets you observe starting behavior, and Harley-Davidson specifically says clutch play should be judged with the engine cold. Do not treat a suspicious appearance or sound as a diagnosis; use it as a reason to ask questions or seek professional review.
Frame, bodywork and signs of a fall
Walk around the bike and look for frame scratches, dents, cracks or apparent repairs, as well as evidence of a fall or collision. Inspect the exhaust for corrosion, dents, leaks and loose mounts. Check the fork for damage or leaks and controls for damage. Note modifications or repairs that are unexplained or poorly documented; they are prompts for follow-up, not automatic proof of a defect.
Tires, wheels and brakes
Check tires for tread, damage, age and date code. Use a tire-pressure gauge and set pressure according to the owner’s manual for the exact model and year; do not assume a generic figure applies. Look over wheels for bends, dents, warping or cracks, and check spokes where applicable.

Inspect both brakes and check fluid level and condition. Operate the controls to confirm the brakes engage and release smoothly. The motorcycle should not be bought on the assumption that an apparent brake or tire issue will be minor; have a qualified technician assess anything you cannot confidently evaluate.

Suspension, clutch and fluids
Compress the front suspension and bounce the rear, listening and feeling for abnormal behavior. Check clutch lever play and smooth engagement. Look for fuel, oil, coolant or hydraulic-fluid leaks, as applicable to the model, and check oil and other applicable fluid levels for obvious contamination. Unusual oil or coolant appearance warrants further inspection, but color alone does not establish an internal failure.
Wiring, controls and lights
Look for mismatched, damaged or questionable wiring. Operate the horn, headlights, turn signals, brake lights, switches, throttle, shifter and side stand. Turn the steering from lock to lock and check for abnormal resistance or interference. Compare model-specific operation with the owner’s manual.

Start-up and exhaust
If the seller permits, start the motorcycle and listen as it warms. Harley-Davidson advises watching for abnormal knocks or rattles and smoke. Blue or white exhaust smoke can indicate an issue that needs professional diagnosis; it is not, by itself, a confirmed diagnosis of a particular fault.
Test ride only when it is legal and safe
A test ride can help you judge fit, handling and performance, but take one only if the seller authorizes it, the motorcycle is legally roadworthy, you are licensed and properly equipped, and conditions are safe. Assess starting, clutch take-up, shifting, braking, steering, vibration, straight tracking and whether the bike suits its intended use. Stop if a safety-related problem appears. If a ride is not appropriate, do not pressure the seller or take the motorcycle onto the road.

When to pay for an independent inspection—or walk away
For a private sale, an independent motorcycle mechanic’s pre-purchase inspection is especially useful if you are uncertain or encounter unexplained issues. Harley-Davidson advises buyers in that situation to request an outside mechanic’s inspection before buying. Agree with the seller on how and where the inspection can take place; a refusal to permit reasonable checks is a reason to pause rather than skip verification.

Private sale or Harley-Davidson Certified Pre-Owned?
A dealer-certified option may be worth comparing with a private sale, but certification does not establish that every certified bike is better value or guarantee zero future repairs. Harley-Davidson’s current U.S. Certified Pre-Owned page lists the following program features; confirm availability, eligibility and terms with the selling dealer before relying on them.
| Comparison point | Private-party motorcycle | Harley-Davidson Certified Pre-Owned |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection or assurance | Condition depends on the specific motorcycle; arrange an independent inspection if uncertain. | Harley-Davidson lists a 110-point quality assurance inspection on its current U.S. Certified Pre-Owned page, accessed in 2026. |
| Warranty | Coverage depends on the individual sale; do not assume a warranty is included. | Harley-Davidson lists a 12-month limited powertrain warranty with unlimited mileage on its current U.S. Certified Pre-Owned page, accessed in 2026; confirm terms with the dealer. |
| What to compare | Asking price, title and recall documentation, service evidence, inspection access, likely immediate work and recourse. | Total price, motorcycle condition, documentation, likely immediate work, warranty terms and available recourse. |
Compare the complete cost and documentation for the specific bikes under consideration. A dealer’s inspection and warranty may change the value calculation, but they do not replace checking the motorcycle, paperwork and program terms.
