A supercharger and a turbocharger both compress the air going into an engine, helping it burn more fuel and potentially make more power. The key difference is what drives the compressor: a supercharger is powered mechanically by the engine or by an electric motor, while a turbocharger uses a turbine spun by engine exhaust.
What does a supercharger do?
A supercharger compresses intake air and forces more of it into an internal-combustion engine. With more oxygen available, the engine can burn more fuel, which may increase power. The actual result depends on the engine’s design and control systems.

Combustion is what produces an engine’s work: expanding gases push the pistons. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this process in its overview of internal-combustion engine basics. A supercharger changes how much air is available for that process; it does not guarantee a particular power gain.

How is a supercharger different from a turbocharger?
Both are forced-induction systems: each uses a compressor to supply additional intake air. Their main difference is the energy source used to drive that compressor.

| Feature | Supercharger | Turbocharger |
|---|---|---|
| What drives it | Mechanical power from the engine—commonly through a belt connected to the crankshaft—or an electric motor. | Engine exhaust spins a turbine, which drives the compressor. Garrett Motion describes this exhaust-to-turbine-to-compressor arrangement in its turbocharging explainer. |
| Typical response | A conventional crank-driven unit is linked to engine speed and is often more immediate in its response. | May take time for exhaust flow and turbine speed to build; this delay is called turbo lag. |
| Energy tradeoff | A crank-driven supercharger draws some power from the engine to run the compressor. | Uses energy in the exhaust flow to drive the turbine, although the efficiency of the complete engine and turbo system varies. |
These are typical tendencies, not guarantees for every vehicle. Electric assistance, turbo size, engine speed, gearing, controls and the overall system design can all affect response. Car and Driver’s comparison of turbochargers and superchargers also describes the usual response and power tradeoffs.
Which is better: a supercharger or a turbocharger?
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the specific engine and vehicle, including how the manufacturer balances response, efficiency, packaging and power delivery. A supercharger’s direct mechanical drive can suit a design prioritizing immediate response, but it uses engine power. A turbocharger harnesses exhaust energy, but may have spool-up delay.

- [DIAL IN YOUR BOOST] Ships with 50T/55T pulleys for popular street range. 48T, 60T, 65T sold separately to adjust overdrive for race or street. Intended for racing - verify local emissions.
Those tradeoffs do not establish a universal fuel-economy or power advantage for either system. Comparing vehicles requires looking at their complete engine and induction systems, rather than assuming the compressor type alone determines the outcome.

How common are turbochargers?
As historical context, the U.S. Department of Energy reported on June 8, 2020 that 34% of new U.S. light-duty vehicles produced for model year 2019 were turbocharged. The DOE attributed that preliminary figure to the EPA’s 2019 Automotive Trends Report; it is not a current-market share. See the DOE summary and its stated qualifications.
