What to Check if Your Chery Omoda 5 Shows Signs of a Wheel Coming Loose

If your Chery Omoda 5 shows wheel vibration, abnormal noise, visible movement or changed handling, stop safely and arrange professional inspection. Here is what to check, what not to do, and how to confirm recall coverage.

Stop treating a suspected loose wheel as a minor noise. If your Chery Omoda 5 develops strong vibration, abnormal wheel-area noise, visible wheel movement or suddenly changed handling, slow down smoothly, pull over somewhere safe and arrange professional inspection or recovery. Do not continue driving to see whether the symptom disappears.

The OMODA 5 owner manual includes wheel-bolt security in its pre-drive check: “Make sure no wheel bolts are missing or loose.” A visual check can identify an obvious problem, but it cannot confirm that the wheel, hub, bearing, driveshaft nut or suspension is safe.

What the symptoms can mean

A wheel that is genuinely loose can move on the hub and damage the wheel, bolts, hub or brake components. Similar sensations can also come from a damaged tyre, bent wheel, bearing, suspension part or drivetrain fault. Because those causes require different repairs, use the symptom to decide whether to stop, not to diagnose the exact failed part.

What you notice Safest response
Strong vibration through the steering wheel, seat or floor Reduce speed without harsh braking, stop at the first safe location and arrange recovery or a qualified inspection.
Abnormal knocking, scraping, humming or a repeated wheel-area noise Stop as soon as it is safe. Do not drive on to test whether the noise fades.
Vehicle pulls, wanders, feels unstable or handling changes suddenly Treat it as a potential wheel, tyre or suspension hazard and stop driving.
A wheel appears to wobble, sit out of position or have a missing bolt Do not drive the vehicle. Keep clear of traffic and request professional assistance.
A mild, uncertain sensation with no visible fault Have the vehicle checked promptly; do not assume that a brief or intermittent symptom is harmless.

The UK recall notice discussed below specifically identifies wheel vibration and abnormal noise as possible signs of its stated driveshaft-nut locking defect. That does not mean every OMODA 5 with those symptoms is affected by the recall, or that every OMODA 5 is subject to the same campaign.

What to check from a safe position

Only perform checks that you can make without entering traffic, crawling under the vehicle or using an unsafe roadside jack. If the car is on a motorway, narrow shoulder, bend or other exposed location, remain in a protected place and call the appropriate breakdown or emergency service.

1. Look for an immediately visible wheel problem

  • Check whether any wheel bolt is visibly missing.
  • Look for a wheel that appears displaced, tilted or no longer seated evenly against the hub.
  • Look for fresh marks around the bolt holes, a cracked wheel, or damage around the hub area.
  • Check whether the tyre is flat, badly underinflated, bulging, cut or otherwise damaged.

Do not place your hands near a moving wheel, and do not try to rock the vehicle or spin a wheel on the roadside. An apparently intact wheel can still have loose or incorrectly seated fasteners.

2. Check the tyre condition and pressure information

The OMODA 5 manual’s exterior safety check calls for checking tyre pressure and inspecting the tyres for cuts, damage and excessive wear. Use the vehicle’s specified pressure information and a reliable gauge when you are in a safe place. A tyre fault can create vibration or pulling that feels similar to a wheel problem, but correcting tyre pressure does not make a loose wheel safe.

3. Note exactly what changed

Record when the symptom began, the speed at which it occurs, whether it changes during braking or cornering, and which corner seems involved. Tell the recovery operator or repairer whether a wheel was recently removed, a tyre was changed, or brake or suspension work was performed. This information helps the technician without encouraging you to keep driving for further testing.

What not to do

  • Do not keep driving to find out whether the noise goes away. A loose fastener can worsen quickly as the wheel moves on the hub.
  • Do not randomly tighten wheel bolts. The correct tightening sequence, seating condition and torque depend on the exact OMODA 5 market, model year and powertrain. Tightening a damaged, cross-threaded or incorrectly seated fastener can create another hazard.
  • Do not use a jack on an unsafe roadside. A jack is for the procedure and conditions specified for your vehicle, not for an emergency inspection beside moving traffic.
  • Do not crawl under the vehicle. A wheel or hub fault cannot be safely diagnosed from underneath by an unprotected roadside inspection.
  • Do not substitute a torque figure from another OMODA 5 manual. Published manual versions show different wheel-bolt torque information and bolt designations. Use the manual for your exact vehicle or have a qualified repairer perform the work.

Wheel bolts and the driveshaft nut are different parts

The wheel bolts are the fasteners you can normally see at the wheel. The driveshaft or wheel-hub nut is a separate component in the hub and drivetrain assembly. A fault involving that nut may produce wheel vibration or abnormal noise even when the visible wheel bolts look present.

This distinction matters because a quick look at the wheel cannot rule out a hub or driveshaft-nut problem. If symptoms are pronounced, persistent or accompanied by changed handling, the correct next step is inspection by a qualified technician, not a roadside attempt to reach or adjust a hidden nut.

Could your OMODA 5 be covered by the UK recall?

The UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency lists safety recall R/2026/013, dated 3 February 2026, under the title “Potential Loosening of Wheel Hub Nut.” Its notice says market feedback identified “a few limited instances of an improperly locked driveshaft nut that may cause wheel vibration and abnormal noise on Omoda 5 and E5 models.” The listing records 2,327 affected vehicles in that UK campaign.

Recall detail Recorded information
Recall number R/2026/013
Recall date 3 February 2026
Models named in the reason Omoda 5 and E5
Potential defect Improperly locked driveshaft nut
Possible symptoms in the notice Wheel vibration and abnormal noise
Affected vehicles in this UK record 2,327
Planned remedy An authorised dealer inspects the driveshaft-nut locking condition and corrects any non-conformity under the manufacturer’s technical instructions.

The 2,327 figure is the count in this UK recall record, not an estimate of the worldwide OMODA 5 population. The record was surfaced on a UK OMODA E5 2025 model page while its text refers to Omoda 5 and E5 models. It does not establish that a particular OMODA 5 VIN is included, nor that another country’s campaign has identical scope.

How to confirm recall coverage

  1. Use the recall checker for the country where the vehicle is registered. UK owners can check by registration or by make, model and year through the government’s vehicle-recall guidance.
  2. Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN). Give the VIN, registration number, model year and powertrain to the local OMODA manufacturer representative or dealer.
  3. Ask whether the campaign is open for that VIN. A model name alone cannot confirm inclusion because recall scope is vehicle- and market-specific.
  4. Arrange the dealer inspection and remedy. For an included vehicle, the UK notice calls for inspection of the driveshaft-nut locking condition and corrective work where a non-conformity is found.
  5. Do not wait for the appointment if the car is symptomatic. A recall check does not make it safe to drive a vehicle that is currently vibrating, making abnormal noise or handling differently. Tell the dealer or recovery provider about the symptoms and follow their instructions.

Use the correct OMODA 5 manual

OMODA publishes separate OMODA 5 manual versions for petrol, SHS and EV variants in some markets. The pre-drive safety advice to check for missing or loose wheel bolts is useful, but service specifications can differ between editions. One manual source gives a wheel-bolt torque specification while another gives a different figure and bolt designation; the available documents have not been reconciled into one universal value.

For that reason, this article deliberately does not provide a torque number. Before any wheel is refitted, identify the exact market, model year, powertrain and manual edition. If there is any doubt about the specification, wheel seating, thread condition or the reason the wheel became loose, use an authorised dealer or qualified repairer.

After a wheel has recently been removed

A recent tyre change, puncture repair, wheel swap or brake job increases the importance of a prompt inspection if vibration or noise begins afterward. Tell the repairer exactly what work was done and when. The technician should verify the wheel’s seating surface, fastener condition and specified tightening procedure, then inspect related hub, brake, tyre and suspension components as needed.

Do not treat the absence of a missing bolt as proof that the installation is correct. A bolt can be present but loose, damaged, incorrectly seated or tightened to the wrong specification. Conversely, a noise that began after wheel work may still come from a tyre or another component, which is why professional diagnosis is safer than repeated roadside tightening.

A practical decision path

  1. Symptom appears: ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt steering or braking.
  2. Find a safe stopping place: stop away from live traffic where possible and switch on hazard warning lights as appropriate.
  3. Decide whether the vehicle should move at all: strong vibration, abnormal noise, visible movement, a missing bolt or changed handling means no further driving; request recovery.
  4. Make only a safe visual check: look for the obvious wheel, bolt and tyre problems listed above, without jacking the car or going underneath it.
  5. Give accurate information: provide the symptoms, location, VIN or registration, and any recent wheel or brake work to the dealer or recovery operator.
  6. Check recall status: confirm the campaign with the applicable national checker or local manufacturer representative, but do not use a clear recall result as a substitute for diagnosis.
  7. Return to driving only after inspection: resume use when a qualified professional has confirmed that the wheel, hub, tyre and related components are safe.

Questions owners commonly ask

Is a missing wheel bolt an emergency?

Yes. Do not continue driving to a workshop. Stop safely and arrange professional assistance, because the remaining fasteners and wheel mounting surfaces may already be damaged or overloaded.

Can I tighten the bolts myself and drive home?

Not as a general response to a suspected loose wheel. The correct specification and procedure depend on the exact vehicle and manual, and tightening cannot repair damaged threads, a distorted wheel or a hub fault. Have the vehicle inspected.

Does the 2026 UK recall affect every Chery Omoda 5?

No. R/2026/013 is a UK, vehicle-specific campaign record. Confirm coverage for your VIN with the applicable national checker and local OMODA dealer or manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the wheel looks normal but the car vibrates?

Stop driving if the vibration is strong, persistent or accompanied by abnormal noise or changed handling. A visual check cannot rule out a driveshaft-nut, hub, bearing, tyre, brake or suspension problem.
