Before you travel, verify five things for your specific route: the operator’s current service and station access, accepted fare methods, accessibility at both stations, platform and boarding rules, and the system’s assistance and emergency procedures. “Driverless” describes train operation, not a universal passenger procedure, so use the official information for the city and operator you will ride.
1. Confirm that your route and stations are operating
Check the operator’s official service information immediately before leaving. Look up your line, origin station, destination station and any interchange stations rather than checking only the network map. Service availability, station entrances and lift access can change because of maintenance, incidents, events or construction.

Check the complete journey
- Confirm that the train line is running for the time you plan to travel.
- Check whether your origin, destination and interchange stations are open and accepting passengers.
- Look for planned closures, replacement services, platform changes and entrance restrictions.
- Allow extra time if the journey planner shows a transfer, a long walk between platforms or an alternative entrance.
Save the operator’s service-status page or app before you leave. A timetable downloaded earlier may not reflect a same-day closure, and an open station may have one entrance unavailable while another remains accessible.
2. Confirm how you can pay
Fare rules differ between cities and can differ between lines in the same region. Check the operator’s accepted payment methods, where you can buy or load a ticket, and whether you must tap in and out. Confirm that your card, phone wallet or transit card is supported before you reach the gate.

Questions to answer before departure
- Can you use a contactless credit or debit card, a mobile wallet, a dedicated transit card, a paper ticket, or more than one of these?
- Do you need a separate ticket for each passenger, including children or concession travellers?
- Is a payment card required to enter and exit, and must the same card or device be used both times?
- Are ticket machines, retail outlets or online sales available at your station?
- What should you do if a gate rejects your payment or you are charged incorrectly?
For example, Transport for NSW says Sydney Metro passengers can tap a credit or debit card or use an Opal card. That is a Sydney-specific rule, not a general rule for every automated metro. Check the current guidance for your own operator at Transport for NSW’s Metro page.
3. Check accessibility at the stations you will actually use
Do not infer accessibility from the words “driverless” or “fully automated.” Review the facilities at your origin, destination and transfer stations, and check whether the accessible route reaches the platform you need. A lift at one entrance may not serve every platform, and a facility can be temporarily unavailable.
Verify the features relevant to your journey
- Step-free entrances, lifts and boarding ramps.
- Accessible gates and the route from the gate to the correct platform.
- Accessible toilets and their opening arrangements.
- Wheelchair spaces or other designated areas inside trains.
- Help points, staff locations and the method for requesting assistance.
- Tactile flooring, Braille signs, audio announcements and hearing loops if you use them.
Transport for NSW lists station lifts and boarding ramps, accessible gates and toilets, wheelchair spaces, help points, tactile flooring, Braille, audio announcements and hearing loops for Sydney Metro. Check its Accessible metro travel guidance for the stations on your route. Other operators may use different equipment, layouts or assistance procedures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlan for a facility outage
If your route depends on a lift, look for an accessible-journey alert and a documented alternative before travelling. Contact the operator if the online information does not say whether the alternative is step-free. Do not assume that staff can improvise a safe route through a closed area.

4. Allow time for safe platform and boarding behaviour
Arrive early enough to read signs, find the correct platform and position yourself without rushing. At the platform, stay behind the marked safety line and keep bags, mobility equipment and children within your control. Stand clear of doors so people can leave first.
Board in the safe order
- Check the destination display and platform announcement before approaching the doors.
- Let passengers exit completely.
- Wait for the doors to open fully and board without pushing.
- Move into the carriage to keep the doorway clear.
- Never touch, hold or force moving doors. If you miss the train, wait for the next service rather than attempting to stop it.
Automated trains still have moving vehicles, platform edges and closing doors. The absence of a driver in the cab does not remove the need to follow platform markings, announcements and staff directions. Transport for NSW publishes platform and boarding advice in its Safety when travelling by metro and train guidance.
5. Know how to get human help
Find out before travelling how the operator connects passengers with staff or a control centre. The contact method may be a staffed gate line, an intercom or help point, a marked emergency button, a telephone number, or an onboard communication panel. Learn the location of these devices at the station and, if the operator provides a carriage diagram, inside the train.
When to ask for assistance
- You cannot find the accessible route, lift or correct platform.
- Your payment method fails and you cannot pass the gate.
- You need help boarding, positioning a wheelchair or finding a designated space.
- You see a hazard, unattended item, medical emergency or person in immediate danger.
- You are unsure whether an announcement applies to your train or station.
Give the staff member or control centre the station name, platform or carriage, direction of travel and a short description of the problem. If you are using a help point, stay nearby unless remaining there would be unsafe. Do not enter a restricted area to find assistance.

6. Read the operator’s emergency instructions
Emergency procedures are system-specific. Before your trip, identify the operator’s instructions for fire, smoke, a stopped train, evacuation, medical emergencies and suspicious items. Note whether passengers should remain onboard, use an intercom, wait for staff or leave through a particular door. Follow live announcements and instructions from staff even if they differ from a general expectation about trains.
If the train stops unexpectedly
- Stay calm and listen for announcements.
- Do not open doors, climb onto the track or leave the train unless instructed or there is an immediate danger that requires escape.
- Use the designated communication device to report a medical issue, smoke, fire or other urgent hazard.
- Keep aisles and door areas clear so staff or emergency responders can move through the carriage.
- Follow the operator’s instruction about remaining onboard, transferring to another train or evacuating.
Transport for NSW gives Sydney Metro passengers this instruction: “In an emergency situations it is safer to remain in the train and follow instructions from the staff.” The wording and procedure apply to that system; another operator may direct passengers differently. Read the local policy rather than assuming that every underground railway uses the same evacuation plan.
7. Understand what “driverless” means for passengers
A driverless or automated train uses automated control to operate the service, but passengers still interact with station staff, onboard personnel, help points and an operations centre. Automation does not guarantee that every station is unstaffed, that every door behaves identically or that emergencies are handled without human direction.

Transport for NSW describes Sydney Metro as “Australia’s first fully accessible, automated driverless train network.” It also says expert train controllers monitor the network. That example shows why you should check the operator’s own explanation of supervision and assistance instead of treating “driverless” as a complete safety description.

| Fare | Accepted cards, transit passes, tickets, tap-in or tap-out rules and a way to resolve a failed payment | Before arriving at the gate |

Treating “driverless” as “unstaffed”
Problem: You do not know how to request help or who is monitoring the service.
Safer alternative: Learn the location of help points and the operator’s staff or control-centre contact method.
Trying to leave a stopped train independently
Problem: You enter a live track area or obstruct an emergency response.
Safer alternative: Listen for instructions, use the designated communication device and evacuate only when directed or when immediate danger makes remaining impossible.
11. Keep the operator’s guidance open during the journey
Conditions can change after you enter the system. Keep the official service page or app available, watch station and onboard displays, and listen to announcements. If staff give a direction that conflicts with your pre-trip plan, follow the current instruction and ask for clarification through the designated channel. The safest preparation is therefore not a universal rulebook but a route-specific check of service, fare, access, assistance and emergency information.
