Before buying an electric SUV advertised as a 4×4 in India, verify the exact variant’s factory drivetrain. A high-riding body, terrain modes or rapid acceleration does not prove four-wheel drive. Ask for written confirmation that the trim has a motor driving the front axle as well as the rear axle, then check its complete on-road cost, range test cycle, charging arrangements, battery warranty, safety equipment and local support.
Among the vehicles covered here, Tata’s Harrier.ev QWD is the clearly identified all-wheel-drive option. Mahindra’s current FAQ describes the BE 6 SPORTEQ and XEV 9e as rear-wheel drive; they should not be treated as 4×4 alternatives. Prices, variant equipment and availability can change, so obtain a current dealer quote and official specification sheet before paying a booking amount.

First, confirm that the SUV is actually four-wheel drive
“4×4”, “AWD”, “QWD” and “dual motor” are related terms, but they are not interchangeable marketing labels. For this purchase, the decisive question is whether the specific vehicle has a factory-installed drive motor on both axles and whether its control system can use them together.

Tata’s June 27, 2025 release describes the Harrier.ev QWD as a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive vehicle. Tata quoted 504 Nm of torque and 0–100 km/h in 6.3 seconds for the QWD. Confirm that the quotation and order form identify the QWD trim rather than a rear-drive Harrier.ev variant.

Mahindra BE 6 SPORTEQ
Mahindra’s current FAQ identifies BE 6 SPORTEQ variants as rear-wheel drive. It is therefore not a factory 4×4, even if its ground clearance, drive modes or acceleration suit an SUV buyer.
Mahindra XEV 9e
The same FAQ states that the XEV 9e is rear-wheel drive only. It should not be selected as an AWD substitute. Mahindra lists the XEV 9S in its current lineup, but the information available here does not establish that model as a four-wheel-drive candidate.
Questions to ask the dealer
- What is the complete variant name and battery version?
- How many drive motors are fitted, and which axle does each motor drive?
- Can both motors provide propulsion simultaneously, or is one used only for specific conditions?
- Does the official specification sheet list AWD or QWD for this exact trim?
- Will the same drivetrain description appear on the booking form, invoice and registration documents?
- Is the demonstration vehicle the same motor, battery, wheel and software configuration as the one being ordered?
- Does the quoted trim have a different tyre size or suspension calibration from the rear-drive version?
A terrain-response setting changes throttle, braking and traction-control behaviour. It does not add a second drive axle to a single-motor vehicle. Likewise, a temporary front-axle intervention or electronic traction aid should not be described as permanent mechanical four-wheel drive unless the official specification says so.
Compare the real purchase price, not the headline number
Tata announced an introductory starting price of ₹28.99 lakh ex-showroom for the Harrier.ev QWD on June 27, 2025. That is a dated introductory figure, not a guaranteed 2026 quotation. Ask the dealer to state the current price, validity period and exact variant in writing.
Build a city-specific on-road calculation
Your payable amount can include:
- Ex-showroom price for the selected battery and drivetrain.
- Registration and local taxes.
- Insurance and any finance-related charges.
- Home-wall-charger hardware, cabling and installation.
- Optional equipment, accessories and extended service products.
- Accessories or protection packages added to the booking without being part of the vehicle price.
- Any difference between the booking-time estimate and the invoice-time tax or registration amount.
Mahindra notes that on-road prices vary by city. Compare written, itemised quotations rather than comparing one vehicle’s ex-showroom price with another’s on-road total. Also check whether a quoted charger is included, optional or supplied by a third party. Ask whether insurance is optional through the dealer, whether financing charges are shown separately and whether the quote remains valid if delivery moves into a new pricing period.
Do not assume an introductory price still applies
Manufacturer prices and variant line-ups can change after a launch announcement. Before signing, ask for the price applicable on the expected invoice date, the tax treatment for your state, the cancellation terms and the financial effect of a delivery delay. Keep the signed quotation, booking receipt and version of the specification sheet that was used to make the decision.
Use range figures with their test-cycle labels
Range depends on battery size, speed, temperature, traffic, gradient, passengers, luggage, tyre pressure and climate-control use. A certified test figure is useful for comparing variants from the same system, but it is not a promise of highway distance between charging stops.

| Vehicle or battery | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Harrier.ev QWD | 627 km | Tata’s claimed MIDC P1+P2 figure in its 2025 release; confirm the battery and trim attached to the quote. |
| Mahindra XEV 9e, 59 kWh | 522 km certified | Mahindra FAQ figure; certified-cycle result, not a guaranteed highway range. |
| Mahindra XEV 9e, 79 kWh | 656 km certified | Mahindra FAQ figure; verify that the quoted vehicle has the 79 kWh pack. |
| Mahindra XEV 9e, 59 kWh | 400+ km internal estimate | Mahindra says this estimate came from moderate ambient temperature, city driving, low HVAC use, dry roads and an optimal mode. |
| Mahindra XEV 9e, 79 kWh | 500+ km internal estimate | Same favourable internal-test conditions; not directly comparable with a highway trip. |
Plan from your own route
- Write down your normal daily distance and the longest regular weekend route.
- Estimate consumption using the car’s trip computer after a representative test drive, rather than relying only on the brochure.
- Reserve a buffer for high-speed driving, monsoon traffic, cold weather, passengers and detours.
- Identify a working charger before the battery reaches a critically low state; do not plan around a single station.
- Ask whether the quoted range applies to the QWD or rear-drive version, since an additional motor and different tyres can change efficiency.
- Repeat the calculation for your usual air-conditioner setting and a fully occupied cabin, rather than using an unloaded showroom drive.
- Check whether your destination has a charger that can be used while parked for the time you expect to spend there.
There is no independent long-term highway-range comparison established for these vehicles in the information available here. Treat the manufacturer figures as manufacturer claims and verify the exact battery, wheel and software configuration. Do not compare a certified number for one pack with an internal estimate for another and call the difference a real-world advantage.
Check home charging before delivery
Daily convenience usually depends more on reliable overnight charging than on the maximum DC figure. Inspect your parking space and electrical supply before ordering a wall box.
Mahindra charging specifications to verify
Mahindra states up to 180 kW DC charging and approximately 20 minutes for a 20–80% charge. It also offers 7.2 kW and 11.2 kW wall chargers as options and says a 3.3 kW portable charger is included. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities; actual time depends on the vehicle variant, charger output, battery temperature, state of charge and site conditions.
“Up to” is a peak capability, not a constant rate throughout a session. Confirm the exact vehicle’s maximum DC input, the connector used, whether the charger is shared and whether the station can deliver the advertised output when other vehicles are connected. A 20–80% estimate also does not describe the time needed to fill the final portion of the battery.

- Have an authorised electrician check the sanctioned load, earthing, cable route and protection devices.
- Confirm whether your apartment or housing society permits the installation and how electricity consumption is metered.
- Get the charger model, connector, output, warranty and installation scope written into the purchase documents.
- Ask who is responsible for civil work, cable length, wall penetration, weather protection and future servicing.
- Check that the charger is compatible with the exact vehicle and battery variant, not merely with the brand.
- Confirm what happens if the parking bay changes, the charger fails or the society requires removal.
- Keep the portable charger as a backup, but clarify its intended socket, safe-use instructions and warranty rather than treating it as a substitute for a properly installed wall unit.
Plan public charging for your actual journeys
Map chargers along your commute, intercity routes and common holiday destinations. Check connector type, advertised power, opening hours, payment method and recent operating status. Mahindra directs owners to partner networks, its Me4U app and Charge-In. Keep a second charging option near important stops because a station can be occupied, offline or delivering less power than advertised. Save the station’s helpline and payment method before leaving; poor mobile coverage or an app login problem should not be discovered with a low battery.
Read the high-voltage battery warranty in full
Battery coverage can materially affect ownership risk, but headline wording is not enough. Obtain the current terms for the exact variant and intended use.
Mahindra’s stated terms
Mahindra’s FAQ specifies a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first registered private owner. For later owners, it states 10 years or 200,000 km, whichever comes first. Ask the dealer to confirm how “lifetime” is defined, whether the benefit transfers on resale, and whether private-use eligibility is lost when ownership changes.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.

Tata’s stated terms
Tata’s Harrier.ev release refers to a lifetime battery warranty but says terms and conditions apply. Request the complete written policy rather than relying on the phrase alone.
Questions the warranty document should answer
- Is the coverage for the complete high-voltage battery, individual modules, electronics and cooling system?
- Is there a minimum retained-capacity threshold or a repair-versus-replacement policy?
- What distance, time, ownership and usage limits apply?
- Are commercial use, modified charging equipment, water damage, accident damage or unauthorised repairs excluded?
- What servicing, software updates and diagnostic records must be maintained?
- What happens to coverage if the vehicle is sold, financed or moved to another state?
- Is roadside recovery required after a high-voltage warning, and who pays for transport to an authorised facility?
- Are charging faults, onboard chargers, inverters and thermal-management parts covered under separate terms?
Ask for a sample warranty claim process. A lifetime promise is less useful if the owner cannot identify the authorised workshop, required records or documents needed to establish eligibility.
Check crash-test results and the exact safety kit
A published crash score applies to the tested configuration and should not be used to assume that every trim has identical equipment. Compare the official rating with the airbags, restraints, driver-assistance sensors and braking hardware on the vehicle you are ordering.
| Vehicle | Bharat NCAP result reported by the manufacturer |
|---|---|
| Tata Harrier.ev | Five stars; 32/32 adult occupant protection and 45/49 child occupant protection, as reported in Tata’s release. |
| Mahindra XEV 9e | Five stars; 32/32 adult occupant protection and 45/49 child occupant protection, as reported by Mahindra. |
| Mahindra BE 6 | Five stars; 31.97/32 adult occupant protection and 45/49 child occupant protection, as reported by Mahindra. |
Confirm the relevant Bharat NCAP record, test date and model designation. During the showroom inspection, verify the number and location of airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX points, tyre-pressure monitoring, camera and radar hardware, and the driver-assistance functions actually enabled on the quoted trim. Safety features can vary by variant and software configuration.
Ask for a demonstration of the assistance systems in the exact vehicle, including how warnings are displayed and how the driver can override them. Do not pay extra for a feature that appears in a brochure but is disabled, optional or restricted to a higher trim.

Four driven wheels improve the hardware available for traction, but they do not automatically make an electric SUV a dedicated off-road vehicle. The information available here does not establish a comparable set of approach and departure angles, breakover angle, underbody protection, battery clearance or water-wading limits for the candidates.
Inspect these physical details
- Rear-seat width and legroom for the people who will regularly travel in the vehicle.
- Boot volume with the seats in use, charging cables stored and luggage loaded.
- Turning circle and camera visibility for your parking space and narrow roads.
- Wheel diameter, tyre sidewall and replacement cost for your normal road surfaces.
- Ground clearance and the location of the battery enclosure over ramps, broken roads and steep entries.
- Manufacturer guidance for standing water, river crossings, towing and underbody impacts.
- Whether a puncture repair kit or spare-wheel solution leaves room for the charging cable and emergency equipment.
- Door opening, step-in height and roof height in the actual parking bay.
Test the exact trim
Drive the vehicle on the surfaces that matter to you: traffic, rough urban roads, steep ramps and a representative highway section. Note ride comfort, regenerative-braking behaviour, steering at low speed, visibility, road noise and how easily you can modulate power on loose surfaces. A test drive in a different battery, wheel or drivetrain version cannot confirm the behaviour of the vehicle you will receive.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Take the family members, child seats or usual luggage if they are central to the purchase. Check rear-seat belt access, charging-cable storage and boot loading height. Ask whether towing accessories, roof loads or aftermarket underbody protection are approved; do not assume that a high-voltage vehicle has the same accessory limits as a combustion SUV.
Verify service, delivery and charging support in your city
Local support can determine whether an electric SUV is convenient. Ask the selling dealer to identify the nearest authorised service facility trained for high-voltage work, the process for roadside assistance and the expected appointment procedure for software or battery faults.
Recommended Free Tools
Mahindra says waiting periods vary by model, colour, variant and location. Request a written estimated delivery window and ask what happens if the selected trim, colour or charger is delayed. Confirm who installs the wall box, how installation appointments are scheduled and whether public-charging support is included with the vehicle or handled separately.
Ask how software updates are delivered, whether the vehicle can be driven after a low-voltage battery failure, and whether a high-voltage warning requires a flatbed recovery vehicle. These answers help distinguish a convenient local support network from a nominal showroom presence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Booking an SUV after hearing “all-wheel drive” in a general model presentation without checking the variant code.
- Comparing ex-showroom prices while ignoring registration, insurance, charger work and city-specific fees.
- Using the largest certified range as a daily highway promise.
- Assuming a fast DC station will always deliver its maximum output.
- Accepting “lifetime battery warranty” without reading ownership, usage and capacity conditions.
- Using a crash score for one configuration to infer equipment on a cheaper trim.
- Treating ground clearance or a terrain mode as proof of off-road capability.
- Paying a booking amount before recording delivery, cancellation and price-protection terms.
- Choosing a vehicle before confirming apartment permissions and electrical capacity for home charging.
A purchase-day checklist
- Identify the hardware: Record the exact model, battery, wheel, motor count and drivetrain designation.
- Verify the axles: Obtain written confirmation of front- and rear-axle drive from the official specification sheet.
- Price the whole transaction: Compare city-specific on-road quotations, charger installation and optional equipment.
- Validate the range: Note the test cycle, battery size and expected use; plan charging stops with a buffer.
- Secure home charging: Check electrical capacity, permissions, installation scope and charger compatibility.
- Read warranty terms: Confirm eligibility, capacity conditions, exclusions, distance limits and transfer rules.
- Check safety equipment: Match the Bharat NCAP result and equipment list to the exact trim.
- Inspect practicality: Test seats, boot, turning circle, tyres, clearance and visibility with your family or usual load.
- Check support: Confirm service location, high-voltage capability, delivery timing and public-charging options.
- Keep documents: Save the quotation, specification sheet, warranty terms, charger scope and order form before payment.
Claims you should not treat as settled facts
The available manufacturer material does not establish comparable independent figures for long-term reliability, resale value, real-world highway range, service experience or off-road performance. Do not choose between these SUVs on an unsupported reliability ranking or assume a certified range will be reproduced at sustained motorway speeds.
Manufacturer-published prices, range, charging speed and warranty descriptions are time-sensitive. Recheck them with an authorised dealer and the current official safety record immediately before ordering, especially if the vehicle, battery, software or ownership terms have changed.
Bottom line
If factory all-wheel drive is non-negotiable, start by verifying the Tata Harrier.ev QWD designation and its current price, equipment and warranty terms. The BE 6 SPORTEQ and XEV 9e are described by Mahindra as rear-wheel drive, so they do not meet a strict 4×4 requirement. For any electric SUV, the safer buying decision comes from matching the exact drivetrain and battery to your route, securing dependable charging, and confirming written warranty, safety and service details before signing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Tata Harrier.ev available with AWD in India?
Tata’s June 27, 2025 release describes the Harrier.ev QWD as a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version. Confirm that the dealer quote, specification sheet and order form identify QWD, because model families can contain different drivetrains and prices can change.
Is the Mahindra XEV 9e a 4×4?
Mahindra’s current FAQ describes the XEV 9e as rear-wheel drive only. It should not be treated as a four-wheel-drive alternative because of its SUV shape, drive modes or acceleration.
Is the Mahindra BE 6 SPORTEQ AWD?
Mahindra’s FAQ identifies BE 6 SPORTEQ variants as rear-wheel drive. Verify the exact current variant documentation, but do not assume it is a 4×4.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does QWD mean on the Harrier.ev?
In Tata’s release, QWD refers to the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration. Ask the dealer to show which motor drives each axle and ensure QWD appears on the official order documents.
What is the Harrier.ev QWD range?
Tata quoted 627 km on the MIDC P1+P2 test cycle in its 2025 release. It is a manufacturer-certified-cycle claim, not a guaranteed highway distance; verify the battery and exact trim.
How long does Mahindra’s EV take to charge?
Mahindra states up to 180 kW DC charging and approximately 20 minutes from 20% to 80%. Actual time varies with the model, variant, charger output, battery temperature, state of charge and site conditions.
Does a lifetime battery warranty transfer to the next owner?
Do not assume it does. Mahindra states lifetime high-voltage battery coverage for the first registered private owner and 10 years or 200,000 km for later owners, whichever comes first. Tata refers to a lifetime battery warranty subject to terms. Obtain the current written policy and transfer conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre these electric SUVs suitable for serious off-roading?
The available specifications do not establish comparable independent off-road results or complete geometry and water-wading ratings. Check clearance, battery protection, manufacturer crossing guidance, tyres and warranty exclusions before using any of them beyond ordinary roads.
The Bottom Line
Verify the exact axle hardware first: the Harrier.ev QWD is the clearly identified AWD option, while the BE 6 SPORTEQ and XEV 9e are described as rear-wheel drive. Then compare the complete city price, route-based range, charging setup, warranty, safety equipment and local support in writing.
