Do not pay a premium for a used Tesla because an advertisement says “Full Self-Driving” (FSD). Verify the exact vehicle’s software entitlement on its touchscreen, determine whether it is a transferable purchase or merely the previous owner’s subscription, and check the 17-digit VIN for unrepaired recalls. A subscription ends with the seller’s account; a purchased entitlement may stay with the car if it was not moved to another vehicle. Tesla’s FSD transfer program ended March 31, 2026, so you cannot treat a post-purchase transfer as an available fallback.
Also judge what you are buying accurately: Tesla calls the current feature set FSD (Supervised). It requires an attentive driver, does not make the car autonomous, and varies by vehicle configuration, location and regulatory approval. Use the process below before negotiating price or handing over a deposit.

The five checks that determine whether the FSD claim is real

Do these checks on the specific car, not on a similar model or a screenshot from another vehicle. Record the VIN, photograph the software screen with the seller’s permission, and make the entitlement and recall status conditions of your purchase agreement.

Step 1: inspect the car’s own FSD entitlement
Use the touchscreen, not the listing
- Turn on the vehicle and open Controls.
- Select Software.
- Read the Included package section. Tesla’s support guidance says to look for Full Self Driving Capability.
- Confirm that the page also shows Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software, where applicable.
- Compare the VIN displayed by the vehicle with the VIN on the title, registration, purchase order and insurance documents.
A seller who cannot show this screen in person has not demonstrated that the car includes FSD. Do not infer permanent rights from a trial, a temporary promotion, an enabled driving feature during a test drive or a seller’s current Tesla Account subscription.

Separate a subscription from a purchased entitlement
Tesla distinguishes monthly access from an outright purchase. If the previous owner subscribed, the subscription is tied to that owner’s account. Tesla says the used-car buyer must subscribe through the buyer’s own Tesla Account; the seller’s remaining billing period is not a transferable asset.
If the previous owner bought FSD outright and did not move it to another vehicle, Tesla says the buyer receives the vehicle with FSD. Ask for the original order or account record if available, but treat the touchscreen entitlement and Tesla’s confirmation for the VIN as the decisive evidence. Tesla notes that “Luxe Package” status can vary according to when the vehicle was purchased, so do not assume a package label has the same meaning on every delivery date. Do not plan on transferring it after closing
Tesla’s program for customers taking delivery of a new Tesla ended on March 31, 2026. Tesla says that when a qualifying transfer was completed, FSD remains on the recipient vehicle if that vehicle is later sold. The completed transfer cannot be reversed and cannot be transferred to another Tesla Account. That means an expired transfer program cannot rescue a deal in which the used car arrives without the entitlement. Details and restrictions are at Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) transfer page.

Get a VIN-specific answer before money changes hands
Contact Tesla through the applicable support channel and ask it to confirm the FSD status for the exact VIN and explain how the entitlement will appear after the vehicle is placed in your account. Account privacy rules may limit what Tesla will disclose to a prospective buyer, so have the seller participate or authorize the inquiry. Save the written response, the date, and the name or reference number of the interaction. A verbal assurance that is not tied to the VIN is weak protection in a private sale.
Understand what “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” actually does
The name does not mean the Tesla can legally or technically drive itself without you. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as a collection of driver-assistance features. Tesla’s support page states: None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.
You must remain attentive and ready to take control.
Feature behavior and availability depend on the vehicle’s hardware and configuration, the software release, your location, development status and regulatory approval. A car that displays an FSD entitlement may not offer every function you have seen in a video from another country or model year. Ask which functions are enabled for this VIN in your market, rather than treating the package name as a promise of a fixed capability.

During a demonstration, keep your hands, eyes and attention on driving. Do not let a seller frame an intervention, a route suggestion or a feature preview as evidence of autonomous operation. Your insurance, legal duties and responsibility as driver remain in force.
Make the entitlement part of the purchase paperwork
Private-party listings and dealer descriptions can be copied, outdated or based on a subscription that has already ended. Use a written verification sequence:
- Write the complete VIN into the offer or buyer’s order.
- State whether the vehicle includes purchased Full Self Driving Capability and identify the touchscreen date on which you inspected it.
- Require the seller to disclose whether FSD was ever subscribed to, purchased, transferred or removed from another vehicle.
- Make closing conditional on Tesla confirming the entitlement remains associated with that VIN after account change.
- Specify what happens if the entitlement is missing at delivery: cancellation and refund, or a defined price reduction that you accept in advance.
- Keep screenshots, messages, the signed order and Tesla’s response with the title and service records.
For a dealer transaction, ask for the same language on the buyer’s order rather than relying on a salesperson’s email. For a private transaction, do not send a non-refundable deposit until the touchscreen and VIN checks are complete. Remove personal data from screenshots before sharing them publicly; the goal is to document the package and VIN, not expose the seller’s account.

Check open recalls with the exact 17-digit VIN
Run Tesla’s VIN search
- Copy the VIN from the vehicle and paperwork; do not type a shortened serial number or a plate number.
- Enter it in Tesla’s VIN Recall Search.
- Save the result and note the campaign description, remedy instructions and whether Tesla identifies the remedy as completed or still required.
- Ask a Tesla service center to clarify any result that does not show a clear completion status.
The Tesla page displayed recall data as of October 13, 2026. Tesla says recall service is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage; its policy is described at Tesla Recall Information. Free remedy work does not eliminate the need to schedule it or to confirm that a prior owner actually completed it.
Cross-check with NHTSA in the United States
- Open NHTSA’s Check for Recalls.
- Replace the example VIN in the page with the Tesla’s full 17-digit VIN.
- Print or save the result and compare campaign numbers with Tesla’s result and the seller’s service invoices.
NHTSA’s lookup is a United States resource. NHTSA explains that it lists unrepaired safety recalls, not recalls that have already been repaired. It may not yet include a newly announced recall while manufacturers identify every affected VIN. It can omit recalls older than 15 years (with stated exceptions), non-safety campaigns and recalls outside the United States. Therefore, “no unrepaired recalls” is not a complete repair or maintenance history. Request invoices, contact Tesla about uncertain campaigns and use the relevant national authority for a car registered in another country.

Tesla’s battery-pack contactor campaign illustrates the need for VIN matching. Tesla says certain 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y vehicles with specified battery-pack contactors may experience sudden loss of propulsion. The remedy is free contactor replacement, but applicability is determined by VIN. Do not assume every 2025 Model 3 or 2026 Model Y is affected, and do not assume that a vehicle outside those descriptions is automatically clear. Price the subscription and any required upgrade
At the time checked on October 13, 2026, Tesla listed FSD subscription access at $99 USD per month. Tesla warns that prices and features can change. The figure is a United States monthly price, not a guaranteed worldwide rate or a promise that the car is eligible.
Open the Tesla app or the vehicle’s purchase screen for the specific VIN and market before calculating ownership cost. Tesla says some vehicles may require an additional paid prerequisite hardware or configuration upgrade. Confirm:
- Whether the car can subscribe immediately.
- Which hardware or configuration prerequisite applies.
- The one-time price, if an upgrade is required.
- Whether the subscription is billed monthly and can be canceled under the terms shown to you.
- Which FSD (Supervised) functions are currently available in your location.
Use these checks to compare a car with included FSD against one that is subscription-only. Do not capitalize $99 into a lifetime value or assume a future price; Tesla’s own page says the offering can change. Current subscription information is at Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) Subscriptions page.

The available evidence does not establish a universal battery-health percentage, mechanical inspection checklist or third-party inspection provider that applies to every used Tesla. Treat battery condition, tires, brakes, suspension, accident repairs, title history, warranty and local consumer law as separate vehicle- and jurisdiction-specific checks. A car can have valid FSD entitlement and still be a poor purchase because of condition or history.

- Ask whether the FSD status is a purchase, a subscription, a trial or a completed transfer.
- Run preliminary Tesla and NHTSA searches if the VIN is available.

- Arrange an independent mechanical inspection appropriate to the vehicle and your jurisdiction.
At the car

- Ask the seller to sign out only as necessary for delivery; do not ask for or record a password.
- Review warning messages and the software version, then save photographs with the inspection date.
- Drive normally and evaluate condition without treating driver-assistance behavior as an autonomy test.
- Review service invoices and compare completed recall remedies with the VIN lookup results.
Before signing
- Obtain Tesla’s VIN-specific clarification if the entitlement history is unclear.
- Put the FSD status, VIN and remedy for a missing entitlement in writing.
- Agree who pays for an open recall remedy and whether delivery waits until it is completed.
- Recalculate the price using either included FSD or the verified subscription and upgrade cost—not the seller’s claim.
- Keep copies of every document, result and message with the final contract.
Red flags that should pause or end the deal
- “FSD included” with no touchscreen proof: The claim is unverified until the vehicle’s software page supports it.
- The seller demonstrates a subscription: A currently active subscription can disappear when the seller’s account is removed.
- A trial is presented as permanent: Trial access does not establish a purchased entitlement.
- “You can transfer it later”: Tesla’s transfer program ended March 31, 2026, and completed transfers cannot be reversed or moved to another account.
- VIN mismatch: Stop until every document and lookup identifies the same 17-digit VIN.
- “No recalls” based only on a dashboard message: Run both VIN tools and request service records.
- Promises of self-driving: Tesla explicitly says FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous.
- Pressure to deposit immediately: A rushed sale prevents the account, entitlement and recall checks that protect your price.
- Unclear market or import history: Feature availability and regulatory approval can differ by location, so confirm the car’s actual market and registration path.
Final buyer’s checklist
- ☐ Exact 17-digit VIN matches the vehicle and all paperwork.
- ☐ Controls > Software shows the included package and the applicable FSD (Supervised) software wording.
- ☐ Seller has disclosed purchase, subscription, trial and transfer history.
- ☐ Tesla has clarified any entitlement ambiguity for this VIN and account transition.
- ☐ You understand that a subscription does not transfer and that the 2026 transfer program is closed.
- ☐ You know which FSD functions are available for this configuration and market.
- ☐ Tesla VIN Recall Search has been checked and results saved.
- ☐ NHTSA’s United States lookup has been checked when applicable, with its limitations understood.
- ☐ Open campaigns have a documented remedy plan; “no result” has not been mistaken for a full service history.
- ☐ Current subscription price and any prerequisite upgrade have been verified in the Tesla app or touchscreen.
- ☐ Condition, title, accident, warranty and service records have been evaluated separately from software.
- ☐ The contract states the verified FSD status and what happens if it is absent at delivery.
