Do not pay a premium for “FSD” in a used-Tesla listing until the car itself proves that the capability is included. On the vehicle’s touchscreen, open Controls > Software and verify both the included package and the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software listing. A previous owner’s monthly subscription does not transfer to you; an outright-purchased entitlement can remain with the vehicle only if it has not been transferred to another Tesla.
Then evaluate the car as a used electric vehicle: confirm title, accident, service and recall history; inspect tires, brakes, suspension, charging equipment and cabin electronics; and arrange an independent inspection. Tesla’s driver-assistance features remain supervised, vary by vehicle and region, and do not make the car autonomous.

Start with the entitlement, not the advertisement
“FSD,” “Full Self-Driving,” an old screenshot or a seller’s verbal assurance can describe several different situations. The only useful starting point is the entitlement shown on the specific vehicle you are considering.
| What the seller may mean | What you may receive | Evidence to require before agreeing on price |
|---|---|---|
| FSD purchased outright by a former owner | The capability can stay with this vehicle if it has not been transferred to another Tesla. | Live demonstration of the car’s Controls > Software page showing the included package and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software. |
| FSD subscription paid by a former owner | That subscription is not yours. You must subscribe with your own Tesla Account if the option is available. | Written confirmation that the seller subscribed, plus the current software screen. Do not value the car as though a transferable purchase exists. |
| Trial, promotion or temporary access | Access may end when the trial or promotion ends; it is not proof of a permanent entitlement. | Ask Tesla to identify the vehicle’s included package, not merely whether a feature currently launches. |
| No FSD entitlement or unclear status | You may have to purchase or subscribe later, subject to Tesla’s then-current availability and regional rules. | Treat the package as absent until the account and vehicle screens establish otherwise. |
Tesla’s support information says a buyer of a car whose previous owner subscribed must use the buyer’s own Tesla Account. The same support information says a buyer receives FSD when the previous owner purchased it outright and did not transfer it away. These are different rights, so your offer should reflect the verified status rather than the listing language.

Verify FSD on the exact car before paying a premium
Use the vehicle’s Software screen
- While sitting in the Tesla, open Controls.
- Select Software.
- Find the included package or vehicle configuration entry and look for Full Self-Driving Capability.
- Confirm that the software information identifies Full Self-Driving (Supervised), rather than relying on an icon, an old invoice or a feature that may be temporarily enabled.
- Photograph or record the screen with the vehicle identification information visible where practical, and save the seller’s written statement about what was purchased.
Perform this check on the VIN you will buy. A screenshot from another Tesla, a description copied from a different listing or a demonstration in a borrowed car proves nothing about your vehicle. If the seller will not show the screen, price the car as though FSD is not included until Tesla confirms the entitlement through an appropriate account or service channel.
Ask the seller to distinguish purchase, subscription and trial
Ask a direct question: “Was Full Self-Driving purchased outright for this vehicle, subscribed to monthly, or provided temporarily?” Request the original order, invoice or account record when available. Documents do not replace the in-car check, but they can reveal whether the seller is confusing a subscription with a transferable purchase.
Tesla’s current US-facing support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month and says outright purchase is unavailable on that page. That is a current reference, not a guaranteed future price: Tesla can change pricing and availability, and regional terms may differ. At $99 for 12 months, a full year would be $1,188 before any change in price or eligibility. Do not add that subscription cost to the vehicle’s value unless you actually intend to subscribe and have confirmed it is offered for that car and your account.

Find out whether purchased FSD was transferred away
Tesla has offered a transfer process under which a purchased FSD entitlement could move to another vehicle. Tesla’s transfer page now states, “This program is no longer available,” and the support information specifies that the program is no longer available for US deliveries after March 31, 2026. A completed transfer remains with the recipient vehicle and cannot be moved to another account.

For a used-car buyer, the practical question is not whether the seller once owned FSD. It is whether this VIN still has the entitlement today.
Questions to put in writing
- Did you purchase FSD outright for this vehicle?
- Did you ever transfer that purchase to another Tesla?
- Has the vehicle’s displayed package changed after a trade-in, service visit or account change?
- Will you allow the buyer to inspect Controls > Software immediately before payment?
If the seller says FSD was transferred away, remove the package premium from your valuation. If the answer is uncertain, treat the status as unverified and make the sale conditional on Tesla confirming the entitlement or on a price that assumes no FSD.
Confirm the features you actually expect to use
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is a driver-assistance package, not an autonomous-driving system. Tesla states: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” You must remain attentive and responsible for vehicle control.

- For urban driving, ask whether turns and route-following are available in your region and on that software build.
- For parking, verify the exact parking and Summon functions you expect rather than assuming every Tesla has the same controls.
- Read the vehicle’s current Owner’s Manual and Tesla support information for the model and region before treating any demonstration as a promised capability.
Feature access can vary with configuration, hardware, software, region, model, trim and model year. Two cars carrying similar badges can therefore offer different behavior or controls.
Compare used listings on the factors that change value
Build a comparison sheet before you negotiate. Separate entitlement evidence from ordinary used-car condition so a desirable software package does not distract you from a damaged battery, poor title history or overdue maintenance.
| Comparison factor | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| FSD entitlement type | Outright purchase, active subscription, trial, or absent/unclear. | Only a verified, retained purchase can support a transferable-entitlement premium. A former owner’s subscription is not yours. |
| Vehicle-screen evidence | Photos or video of Controls > Software on the exact VIN. | It is stronger evidence than an advertisement or a screenshot from another car. |
| Configuration | Model year, model, trim, hardware, software version and region. | These factors affect which supervised features are available. |
| History | Title brand, accident repairs, ownership, service records and charging history. | Software cannot compensate for structural damage, poor repairs or neglected high-voltage equipment. |
| Physical inspection | Tires, brakes, suspension, body panels, glass, lights, seals and cabin electronics. | Wear and hidden damage determine near-term cost and safety. |
| Recall status | VIN lookup result plus confirmation of completed campaigns. | A lookup can miss some campaigns, so it is one check rather than a complete history. |
| Future FSD cost | Whether you would need your own subscription and its current quoted price. | A monthly payment changes the total cost of ownership and may change over time. |
Do not confuse Tesla Certified Pre-Owned with a private sale
Tesla says its Certified Pre-Owned vehicles pass a 119-point inspection and have an AutoCheck history report available. That statement applies to Tesla’s CPO inventory. It is not evidence that a private-party car, an independent dealer’s car or every online listing received the same inspection.
For a CPO car, ask to see the inspection details, history report and any listed reconditioning. For a private sale, obtain records independently and arrange an inspection by a qualified technician familiar with electric vehicles. A seller’s claim that a car is “like CPO” is not the same as Tesla’s program.

Inspect the vehicle as an electric car, not just as an FSD platform
Title, accident and repair history
- Match the VIN on the windshield, door pillar, vehicle screen and paperwork.
- Check for salvage, rebuilt, flood, fire or other branded-title history.
- Look for panel gaps, paint-color differences, overspray, uneven fasteners, warning lights and evidence of airbag deployment or replacement.
- Ask for collision invoices and photos when repairs are disclosed; confirm that high-voltage components and restraint systems were assessed after a crash.
A clean-looking exterior does not establish that the car has a clean title or an undamaged battery pack. When records are incomplete, pay for a professional inspection before making a non-refundable deposit.
Battery, charging and range evidence
The available material does not establish the battery condition, remaining capacity or repair history of any particular Tesla. Ask for service records and test the charging equipment you will actually use. Check the charge-port door, connector fit, onboard charging behavior, warning messages and supplied cables or adapters. Compare the displayed range only with the correct battery, wheel and software configuration; a dashboard estimate is not a laboratory measurement of battery health.
If a seller claims an unusual battery replacement, warranty repair or unusually high remaining capacity, request the invoice or Tesla service documentation. An independent EV technician can assess symptoms and records, but no brief test drive can certify internal battery condition.

Tires, brakes and suspension
Inspect all four tires for tread depth, uneven wear, sidewall damage, cracking, mismatched brands and age. A digital tread-depth gauge is an optional, inexpensive screening tool for measuring tread depth; it cannot detect internal tire damage, alignment problems, battery condition or general vehicle health. Have questionable wear or impact damage evaluated by a qualified inspector.

During a road test, note pulling, steering vibration, clunks over bumps, brake pulsation, unusual tire noise and warning messages. Regenerative braking can make friction brakes feel different from those on a gasoline car, but it does not eliminate the need to inspect discs, pads, calipers and parking-brake operation.
Body, glass and cabin electronics
- Check windshield chips, camera areas, mirrors, lights, wipers, door seals and panoramic-roof or hatch seals.
- Operate every door handle, window, seat adjustment, screen, camera view, climate control, speaker and USB port.
- Verify both key cards or key devices, mobile-key setup, charging cables and any included accessories.
- Look for persistent alerts, disabled cameras, water intrusion, odors or evidence of amateur modifications.
Record every fault before negotiating. A software entitlement does not repair a failed screen, damaged camera, worn suspension component or missing charging equipment.
Run a VIN recall check, then verify completion
Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN lookup to identify unrepaired recalls. Save the result with the date and VIN, then ask Tesla service or the seller to confirm open campaigns and completed repairs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →NHTSA explains that its lookup may omit:
- Recalls that have already been repaired;
- Very recent recalls while affected VINs are still being identified;
- Recalls more than 15 years old;
- International recalls; and
- Non-safety campaigns.
Because the checker is US-focused, imported vehicles require additional verification in the country where they were sold and serviced. A “no unrepaired recalls” result is useful, but it is not a complete vehicle history and does not confirm battery, accident, title or maintenance condition.
Use a disciplined purchase sequence
- Before viewing: obtain the VIN, model year, trim, mileage, title status, claimed FSD status and asking price.
- Before negotiating: compare the claim with the exact vehicle’s Controls > Software screen and ask whether FSD was purchased, subscribed to or transferred.
- During the drive: test the controls, cameras, charging behavior, steering, suspension, brakes and electronics you will use.
- After the drive: run the NHTSA VIN check, obtain title and service records, and list every defect or missing item.
- Before signing: arrange an independent EV inspection, verify recall completion and confirm that the written sales contract identifies the VIN and the represented software entitlement.
- At delivery: repeat the software-screen check, confirm keys and charging equipment, photograph the odometer and warning-free dashboard, and retain copies of all documents.
Red flags that should stop or reprice the deal
- The seller refuses to show the Software screen on the actual car.
- The listing says “FSD included,” but the seller cannot say whether it was purchased outright or subscribed to.
- The seller relies on a screenshot, an expired trial or a feature demonstration without showing the included package.
- The seller claims a transferred entitlement can be moved again to your account or another vehicle.
- The VIN, title, service records or software screen do not match.
- There is branded-title, flood, fire or major-collision evidence without complete repair documentation.
- Tires show severe uneven wear, sidewall damage or mismatched sizes, or the car has suspension, steering or brake symptoms.
- A recall result is unclear, recently announced or inconsistent with the seller’s story.
- The price assumes a permanent FSD purchase while your budget requires a subscription.
How to treat Tesla’s safety statistics
Tesla’s support material refers to its Vehicle Safety Report and states “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” with FSD engaged. Those are Tesla-published claims; the cited passage does not provide a publication year, comparison details or methodology. They should not be treated as an independently established prediction for the used car you are evaluating, and they do not change the requirement that the driver supervise the system.
Decision rule: buy the car, then value the software
First decide whether the Tesla is acceptable without FSD: title, structure, battery and charging evidence, tires, brakes, suspension, recalls, service history and price must all stand on their own. Then assign software value only after the vehicle screen proves that a purchased entitlement remains on this VIN and after you confirm that the functions you want are available for its configuration and region.
If the entitlement is a former owner’s subscription, budget for your own subscription at Tesla’s current quoted rate or treat FSD as absent. If the status is unclear, make verification a condition of purchase rather than a promise to resolve later. This approach prevents a changing software account status from hiding an ordinary used-car problem.
