What to Check Before Buying a Used Tesla in the Netherlands

A Dutch-specific checklist for verifying a used Tesla's registration, history, condition, battery evidence, warranty, import paperwork and ownership transfer.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you pay for a used Tesla in the Netherlands, verify that the car can be transferred, that its VIN and mileage match the paperwork, that the seller can provide a clean ownership trail, and that the vehicle’s condition and remaining warranty fit the price. Inspect the tires, brakes, body, interior and controls in person, but do not treat a passed APK or the range shown on the screen as a battery-health certificate.

For an imported Tesla, add checks for the Certificate of Conformity, foreign mileage and damage records, BPM and any Dutch damage inspection. Complete the transfer before handing over funds where possible, then claim the vehicle in your Tesla account and arrange the insurance, APK and tax obligations that follow registration.

1. Check the Dutch registration before you inspect the car

Start with the RDW kentekencheck using the registration number. RDW’s English buyer guidance says: “The RDW registration number check provides insight into a vehicle’s historical data. You can also use it to check whether a vehicle can be transferred.” Use the result as a first identity and transaction check, not as a complete mechanical report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the kentekencheck and save the result

  1. Enter the registration number exactly as shown on the plates and documents.
  2. Confirm the vehicle description, registration status and recorded mileage information are consistent with the car you are viewing.
  3. Check whether RDW indicates that a transfer is possible before discussing payment or signing a final agreement.
  4. Record any recall shown in the result and ask the seller for evidence that the work was completed.

RDW warns that manufacturers are not required to report recalls to it. Therefore, an empty recall field is not proof that the vehicle has no outstanding recall. Ask Tesla to check the VIN for open campaigns if the seller cannot provide a clear answer.

Match the VIN, documents and vehicle

Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the VIN on the registration documents and the RDW record. The numbers must agree character for character. Inspect the VIN plate and any other factory identification markings for signs of alteration. RDW specifically advises caution with cloned or rebadged vehicles; a mismatch, damaged plate or seller who avoids showing the VIN is a reason to stop the transaction.

Confirm the seller can legally transfer it

Ask the seller to show the registration documents and codes needed for transfer and to demonstrate that the registered owner is the person or business selling the car. For a private sale, compare the seller’s identity with the registration information and keep a signed purchase agreement. Do not accept a promise that a missing document or transfer code will be supplied later. If the seller cannot complete the transfer, you may pay for a car that cannot be registered to you.

2. Reconstruct mileage and maintenance history

A Tesla has fewer conventional engine-service items than a petrol or diesel car, but it still accumulates wear and can have expensive electrical, suspension, body or charging repairs. Tesla’s Dutch second-hand guidance explains that its cars do not need routine oil changes, fuel-filter or spark-plug replacement, or emissions checks. That does not mean a Tesla is maintenance-free: tires, brakes, suspension, cooling systems, charging equipment, recalls and accident repairs still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare dated records, not a single dashboard number

Request invoices, repair orders, inspection reports and any service history the seller has. Put every dated mileage entry in order and compare it with the odometer during your inspection.

Evidence What to compare Warning sign
RDW vehicle data Recorded mileage and registration history against the dashboard A sudden unexplained decrease or a description that does not match the car
Service and repair invoices Date, mileage, VIN, work performed and supplying workshop Gaps around major repairs or invoices with no identifiable vehicle
Inspection reports Mileage, advisories and defect notes at each inspection Different mileage sequences or repeated unresolved advisories
Seller’s explanation Whether periods of storage, ownership change or import account for gaps Vague answers, pressure to pay, or refusal to share records

RDW says maintenance history can show whether manufacturer-prescribed work is up to date. Use the records to establish what was actually done; do not infer a perfect history simply because the car has no oil-service schedule.

Be more cautious with an imported car

For imports, RDW notes that the quality and completeness of mileage records varies by country. Compare the Dutch dashboard reading with foreign inspection reports, repair receipts, auction or registration documents and Tesla service records where available. A clean-looking Dutch registration does not erase gaps in the vehicle’s earlier history.

  • 3. Easy to read: The digital tire tread depth gauge with large LCD screen and color-coded bar. No more squinting or struggling to see the measurements. The tread depth gauge features a red range on the bar for 0-2/32nds, yellow range for 2-5/32nds, and green range for 5-32/32nds.
  • 4. Widely use: Our tire tread depth gauge is suitable for all types of vehicle tires, including trucks, cars, motorcycles, and pickups. No need to buy multiple gauges for different vehicles.
  • 5.Battery saver: To preserve the included 1.5V SR44/LR battery, the depth gauge will automatically shut off after 5 minutes of inactivity. You don't have to worry about the battery running out quickly.

3. Inspect the car in person

Arrange the inspection in daylight on a dry, level surface. Ask to see the car cold, before the seller has had an opportunity to warm it up or hide warning messages. Tesla’s certified-used inspection includes tires, brakes, body, interior and vehicle functions, but that process applies only to cars sold through Tesla’s certified-used program. A privately offered Tesla has not necessarily received an equivalent inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Body, glass and signs of repair

  • Walk around the car and compare panel gaps, paint texture and colour between adjacent panels.
  • Look for overspray, sanding marks, mismatched trim, uneven fasteners and water inside lamps or the boot.
  • Check windscreen and other glass for chips, cracks and signs that a camera or sensor was replaced without calibration evidence.
  • Inspect the underside and jacking points for impact damage, scraping or fresh underseal that could conceal repairs.
  • Compare the condition with the mileage and history. Heavy wear on steering-wheel trim, pedals or seat bolsters may require an explanation.

Tires, wheels and brakes

Check all four tires for tread depth, uneven wear, sidewall damage, age markings and matching specifications. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or accident problems rather than merely the need for new tires. A digital tread-depth gauge is useful for recording measurements, but it cannot assess alignment, tire age, hidden carcass damage or overall roadworthiness.

Inspect brake discs for deep corrosion, grooves or a pronounced lip and look for warning messages. Electric cars use regenerative braking, so visible corrosion can occur when friction brakes are used less often; that observation still needs a road test and, where appropriate, a professional inspection. Do not estimate repair cost from appearance alone.

Interior, controls and equipment

Operate every function you can safely test: screens, cameras, lights, windows, mirrors, seat adjustments, climate control, wipers, charging-port release and both key cards or other supplied access devices. Check for warning messages before and after the test drive. Confirm that the charging cable, adapters and other equipment promised in the agreement are physically present.

Use an independent EV-competent inspection when needed

If you cannot judge EV systems, pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection and agree its scope in writing. Ask the provider to document body repairs, suspension, brakes, tires, charging operation, diagnostic faults and any battery evidence it can legitimately obtain. An inspection is not a guarantee against future failure, but it is a better safeguard than relying on a seller’s description or a brief test drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Ask for battery evidence without over-interpreting the range display

The traction battery and drive units are central to a used Tesla’s value. Ask for vehicle-specific service records, any documented battery or drive-unit repair, warranty correspondence and a clear explanation of unusual charging or range behaviour.

A displayed range is not a state-of-health report

The estimated range on the screen changes with temperature, speed, tires, driving history, battery charge level and the car’s estimate algorithm. It is not, by itself, proof of the battery’s remaining capacity. The official material available for buyers does not establish one universal, buyer-accessible battery-health test that applies to every used Tesla configuration.

Understand what an APK does and does not establish

The RDW APK handbook section on batteries and wiring covers inspection requirements for those components. A passed APK confirms compliance with the applicable roadworthiness items at the inspection; it is not a published traction-battery state-of-health certificate and does not promise a particular driving range.

Ask precise questions

  • What exact model, battery version and drivetrain does the VIN identify?
  • Has the battery pack, a drive unit, onboard charger or charging port been replaced?
  • Are there invoices or Tesla service records showing the date, mileage and reason for any repair?
  • What battery and drive-unit warranty remains, calculated from the original delivery date and current odometer?
  • Can the seller allow a qualified inspector to perform the agreed diagnostic checks?

Walk away if the seller promises a particular battery percentage without evidence, refuses a reasonable inspection or says that an APK pass proves the battery is healthy.

5. Calculate the warranty that remains for this VIN

Tesla’s Netherlands support page lists general warranty terms, checked in October 2026. The vehicle’s own warranty documents and records govern, so calculate coverage from the original delivery date, odometer, model and configuration rather than from the model year alone.

Coverage listed by Tesla Term Qualification
Basic vehicle warranty 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first General published term; verify the start date and exclusions for the specific car
Model S and Model X battery and drive unit 8 years or 240,000 km, whichever comes first Tesla states at least 70% battery capacity during the warranty period
Listed Model 3 and Model Y rear-wheel-drive versions 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first Configuration-specific term; Tesla states at least 70% battery capacity during the period
Listed long-range and performance Model 3 and Model Y versions 8 years or 192,000 km, whichever comes first Configuration-specific term; Tesla states at least 70% battery capacity during the period
Additional certified-used limited warranty 1 year or 20,000 km, whichever comes first Applies after the original basic warranty expires to qualifying Tesla certified-used vehicles

The 70% figure is a warranty threshold, not a promise that every used car will show exactly 70% or more in ordinary use and not a substitute for a vehicle-specific assessment. Ask Tesla or the seller to confirm the applicable terms for the VIN in writing.

Do not confuse certified-used terms with every second-hand Tesla

Tesla says certified-used vehicles retain the balance of their original battery and drive-unit warranty. Its certified-used program page also states a selection limit of fewer than 150,000 km. These are program conditions, not evidence that a privately advertised car was inspected or qualifies for the additional limited warranty.

6. Apply extra checks to an imported Tesla

Import status affects paperwork, history and sometimes warranty administration. Before buying, assemble a complete file rather than relying on a Dutch plate alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documents and re-registration

  • Obtain the foreign registration documents, purchase invoices and any export or import paperwork.
  • Confirm that the VIN is identical on every document.
  • Ask Tesla for the Certificate of Conformity (COC) required for re-registration of an imported vehicle, as described in Tesla’s Dutch second-hand guidance.
  • Check whether BPM has been assessed and paid where applicable; RDW’s import guidance specifically tells buyers to check this.
  • Keep evidence of the foreign mileage trail, repairs and ownership changes.

Damage history and Dutch inspection

RDW says a damaged imported vehicle requires an additional damage inspection in the Netherlands. Ask for the inspection result and repair evidence, including photographs or invoices if available. A car that has passed registration procedures may still deserve a more detailed structural and battery inspection before purchase.

Warranty and service arrangements

Confirm how any remaining Tesla warranty applies to this VIN and configuration after import, and whether previous repairs were performed through Tesla or another workshop. Do not assume that a warranty statement from the exporting country automatically answers every Dutch service question.

7. Compare two cars on the same evidence

There is no defensible universal “fair price” benchmark in the available official material. Compare the actual cars, not just their advertised prices.

Comparison axis Question to answer
Model and configuration Are battery, drivetrain, software-related equipment and factory options genuinely comparable?
Price versus condition Does the asking price reflect documented wear, repairs, tires, brakes and cosmetic damage?
Mileage consistency Do RDW data, dashboard mileage and dated records form one credible sequence?
Warranty How much basic and battery/drive-unit coverage remains for each VIN?
Inspection evidence Is there an independent inspection, Tesla certified-used inspection or only the seller’s description?
Import status Are COC, BPM, damage inspection and foreign records complete?
Included equipment Are keys, charging cables, adapters and promised accessories present?
Transfer and account Can the seller complete the Dutch transfer and release the car for your Tesla account?

A lower odometer reading should not automatically win if the mileage trail is incomplete, the battery warranty is nearly exhausted or import documentation is missing.

8. Complete the sale and handover safely

  1. Write a purchase agreement identifying the buyer, seller, VIN, registration number, mileage, price, included equipment, known defects and any warranty promise.
  2. Before paying, verify once more that the seller can transfer the registration and that the VIN on the agreement matches the car.
  3. Complete the official transfer and retain the confirmation and all signed documents.
  4. Obtain every key, card, charging cable, adapter, invoice and inspection report listed in the agreement.
  5. Have the seller release the vehicle from their Tesla account and claim it in your own Tesla account. Confirm that the app shows the correct car and that expected remote functions are available.
  6. Arrange the legal obligations immediately after transfer. The Dutch government states that the registered owner must arrange WA liability insurance, ensure applicable APK approval and pay motor vehicle tax.

If the seller insists on receiving the full amount before transfer, account release or delivery of essential documents, reduce your risk with a documented escrow or another arrangement advised by a qualified Dutch professional, or decline the deal.

9. Common traps and the right response

“It passed the APK, so the battery is good.”

Response: ask for vehicle-specific battery and drive-unit evidence and arrange an EV-competent inspection. APK battery and wiring checks do not certify traction-battery capacity.

“The screen says it has the advertised range.”

Response: treat the display as an estimate affected by conditions. Verify the battery warranty, records and independent evidence instead.

“RDW shows no recall.”

Response: remember that manufacturers are not required to report recalls to RDW. Request a VIN check from Tesla and retain the answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“It is a Tesla certified-used inspection.”

Response: confirm that the car was actually sold through that program. A private seller cannot transfer the program’s inspection claim merely by describing the car as certified.

“The model year tells you the warranty.”

Response: calculate from original delivery date, mileage, model and exact configuration. Tesla’s published battery and drive-unit terms differ among Model S/X and Model 3/Y versions.

“The import has a Dutch plate, so the history is complete.”

Response: collect foreign inspection, repair, mileage and damage records, verify the COC and BPM position, and check whether RDW required an additional damage inspection.

10. A practical decision rule

Proceed only when four conditions are satisfied: the identity and transfer are clean; the mileage and import trail are credible; an in-person inspection finds no unexplained safety or structural concern; and the remaining battery, drive-unit and basic warranty is documented for that VIN. If any of those conditions cannot be established, the safest choice is to pause the purchase until the seller supplies evidence or to choose another car.
