Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safest way to buy a used Smart Fortwo is to identify its exact generation and drivetrain first, then verify its history, recalls, transmission behavior, warning lights, body condition and access to specialist repairs. A model-specific diagnostic scan and independent inspection are especially valuable when records are incomplete or the car shows rough shifts, roof faults or warning lamps.
Start by identifying the exact Fortwo
“Smart Fortwo” covers several generations, markets and drivetrains. Inspection points that apply to a North American 453 may not apply to an earlier car, a vehicle sold in another country or an electric model. Before judging the car, record its VIN, model year, body style, market specification and powertrain.

Confirm the generation and drivetrain
Use the VIN, registration documents, dashboard information and service records together. Do not rely only on a seller’s description or a visual guess. The North American 453 guide describes these combinations:

| Version | Powertrain or transmission listed in the 453 guide | Inspection implication |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 1.0-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder or optional 0.9-liter turbo petrol engine | Check cold-start quality, oil seepage, misfires, exhaust noise and the exact transmission fitted. |
| Petrol transmission | Five-speed manual or six-speed twinamic dual-clutch transmission | Evaluate clutch or gear engagement according to the fitted unit; do not assume all Fortwos shift alike. |
| Electric | Separate electric-drive version | Check charging operation, battery records, practical range and battery-related recalls. |
These are guide-reported specifications, not a substitute for the individual car’s build data. The manufacturer says Smart vehicles are no longer sold in the United States, although owner manuals, service and parts information and recall resources remain available through Mercedes-Benz USA. Confirm that the car’s market and support network match your location before buying.

Check the paperwork before touching the car
- Match the VIN stamped on the vehicle and displayed through the car’s electronic systems with the title, registration, service invoices and insurance records.
- Check that the seller’s name and ownership documents agree, subject to your jurisdiction’s title rules.
- Ask for dated invoices rather than accepting a verbal claim that maintenance was “done.” Look for evidence of scheduled servicing, brake work, tires, battery replacement and previous diagnostic repairs.
- Review local inspection, registration and accident records where those records are available.
- Compare the odometer with inspection entries and invoices. Mileage alone cannot establish condition.
Run a VIN recall check
Search the complete VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup and in Mercedes-Benz’s Smart recall resource. NHTSA states that an unrepaired recall appears in the VIN result and that a recall does not expire. Ask the seller for paperwork showing completed work, then confirm that the repair is recorded for this VIN.
A recall result is not a general condition report. It tells you whether a safety campaign remains open; it does not prove that unrelated maintenance was performed or that the vehicle has no other faults.
Special note for electric Fortwos
A Mercedes-Benz USA notice dated May 2020 covered certain 2019 EQ Fortwo vehicles with a high-voltage battery weld defect that could cause loss of propulsion and a possible fire. The stated remedy was replacement of the affected high-voltage battery by an authorized Smart dealer at no charge. Treat this as a VIN-specific campaign: verify whether the particular car is affected and whether the remedy is documented. Do not generalize that remedy to other battery problems.

Exterior checks
- Walk around the car and compare panel gaps from side to side. Uneven gaps, overspray, paint texture changes or mismatched color can indicate repaired impact damage.
- Look for cracked lamps, damaged bumper mounts, distorted door openings and evidence that trim has been removed.
- Inspect the windshield and other glass for cracks, chips and markings that do not match the vehicle’s age or history.
- Check wheels and tires for curb damage, uneven wear and mismatched brands or sizes. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
- Open the front and rear compartments and inspect seams, fasteners and drain areas for standing water or repair marks.
Underbody and corrosion
Raise the car safely or use a professional lift; never crawl under a vehicle supported only by an emergency jack. Check the floor, suspension attachment points, brake and fuel lines, jacking points and underbody panels for corrosion, bends or fresh underseal that may conceal repairs.
Autocar specifically recommends inspecting the rear crash beam bolted to the rear subframe for corrosion. This is particularly relevant where road salt, coastal air or persistent moisture is common. Surface rust is not automatically a reason to reject a car, but structural corrosion, weakened mounting points or unclear repair work should trigger a specialist assessment.
Do a cold-start inspection
Arrange to see the car before it has been driven that day. A warm engine can hide difficult starting, smoke, misfires and abnormal noises.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Startup sequence
- Ask the seller not to start the engine before you arrive. Feel the engine and exhaust area if necessary, without touching hot or moving parts.
- Turn the ignition on and watch the instrument panel. Warning lamps should illuminate for their self-check and then go out after the system starts, except for indicators that are intentionally active.
- Start the car without pressing the accelerator unless the owner’s manual specifies otherwise. Note cranking time, idle stability, smoke and unusual mechanical sounds.
- Listen near the engine bay and exhaust for ticking, rattling, hissing or leaks. Record any symptom rather than dismissing it as normal small-car noise.
- After the road test, look for fresh oil, coolant or other fluid on the ground and around the engine.
Petrol-engine points on the 453
The specialist 453 guide lists oil seepage around the valve cover and possible cylinder-three misfires as inspection prompts. These are not statements that every 453 has either defect. If you see oil residue, an unstable idle or a fault code, have a qualified technician identify the source and determine whether the issue is a gasket, ignition component, wiring problem or internal engine fault before negotiating a price.

Test the transmission deliberately
Transmission behavior is one of the most important Fortwo buying checks because different generations use different designs. A manual, a six-speed twinamic dual-clutch unit and an older automated manual should not be judged by the same expectations.
Stationary and low-speed tests
- With the car securely braked, select every available forward gear and reverse. Note delays, refusal to engage, grinding, warning messages or a need to cycle the selector.
- On level ground, release the brake as directed by the owner’s manual and observe whether the car moves predictably. Do not perform an unfamiliar maneuver in traffic.
- Drive in a quiet area at walking speed, using stop-and-go traffic conditions. Check for clutch shudder, banging engagement, hesitation or repeated neutral selection.
- Test reverse several times, including a gentle reverse maneuver on level ground. Autocar specifically advises trouble-free shifting, particularly into reverse, for the automated manual.
- Drive on a modest grade if the route and conditions are safe. Observe whether the transmission holds, changes gear and restarts smoothly without overheating warnings.
For the 453, the specialist guide flags harsh shifts on some early builds. A firm or noticeable shift may be characteristic of the particular gearbox, but a qualified technician should distinguish normal operation from a clutch, actuator, software or mechanical fault. Do not accept “they all do that” without a scan and inspection.
Check warning lamps, airbags and electrical equipment
Leave the ignition on long enough to observe the self-test, then confirm that warning lamps behave as expected after startup. A persistent airbag, ABS, brake, engine or drivetrain warning requires diagnosis before purchase.
Passenger-occupant sensor concern
The 453 guide identifies passenger occupant-sensor faults as an inspection point. A fault can leave the airbag light on and deactivate the passenger airbag. Do not place a child seat or passenger in a position affected by a warning system; have the fault diagnosed and repaired before treating the car as road-ready.

- Test both windows, central locking, mirrors, wipers, washers, horn and interior lighting.
- Run the heater and air conditioning through their settings and listen for blower or compressor noise.
- Check the factory or installed infotainment system, camera, parking sensors and steering-wheel controls.
- Inspect the instrument display for stored messages after cycling the ignition.
Assess the 12-volt battery and starting behavior
The 453 guide describes an aging auxiliary 12V battery as a possible cause of intermittent no-start conditions and module warnings. Ask when the battery was fitted and look for a dated invoice or label. The most useful test is a cold start followed by a second start after the road test, while watching for slow cranking, multiple warning messages or electrical resets.
A battery replacement may be straightforward, but a low-voltage event can also expose charging-system, ground or module faults. If the car has unexplained warnings, have the charging voltage and stored codes checked rather than assuming a new battery will solve everything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If it is a Cabrio, operate the roof repeatedly
Test the convertible roof more than once, from fully closed to fully open and back again. Keep hands, loose clothing and objects clear of moving parts.
- Watch for pauses, slow sections, failure to latch or a roof that stops before reaching an end position.
- Listen for clicking, grinding or other unusual noises.
- Check whether the roof responds consistently on repeated cycles.
- Inspect seals and the interior for dampness, staining or mold, particularly after rain.
The 453 guide points to roof microswitch and control issues as possible causes of incomplete operation. A roof that works only after repeated button presses still needs diagnosis; intermittent operation can become a stranded-car problem and may require more than a simple adjustment.

For an electric Fortwo, verify charging and battery condition
Take an electric model to a compatible charging point and confirm that the connector locks, charging starts and the car reports the expected status. Bring the correct cable if the seller does not provide one, and do not force a connector or use damaged equipment.
Questions to ask about the battery
- Request service records showing battery-related inspections, repairs or software work.
- Ask how the car was normally charged and stored, especially in very hot or cold conditions.
- Compare the displayed range with the owner’s normal use, but do not treat a new-car published range as a promise for an older battery.
- Have a technician check battery-system faults and state-of-health information using equipment compatible with that exact model and market.
Practical range changes with temperature, driving style, heater or air-conditioning use, traffic and battery condition. A short displayed range is a reason to investigate, not a stand-alone diagnosis.
Get a full-module scan and independent inspection
A general walk-around cannot reveal every stored fault. Arrange an inspection with a technician who understands the relevant Smart generation and drivetrain before you commit to the purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
What the inspection should include
- Scan all available control modules, not only the engine computer.
- Record current, pending and history codes, along with freeze-frame information where available.
- Inspect the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, steering, cooling system and underbody on a lift.
- Check for accident repairs, corrosion and fluid leaks.
- Verify charging and high-voltage-system operation on an electric model using appropriate safety procedures.
- Assess the Cabrio roof through multiple cycles when applicable.
The 453 guide names the Foxwell NT530 as one possible tool for module scans. Scanner compatibility varies by year, drivetrain and module, so confirm support before buying or relying on any device. A scan supplements, but never replaces, a physical inspection and road test.
Compare several Fortwos using the same evidence
When you have more than one candidate, compare documented facts rather than asking which model year is supposedly “best.” The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable current price comparison or a model-wide failure-rate ranking.
| Decision factor | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | VIN, generation, market, body style and drivetrain | Determines which specifications, recalls and inspection points apply. |
| History | Invoices, ownership, inspection and accident records | Shows whether maintenance is documented instead of inferred from mileage. |
| Transmission | Quality of every gear change, reverse engagement and scan results | Separates normal characteristics from faults requiring diagnosis. |
| Safety systems | Warning-lamp behavior, airbag status and completed recalls | Unresolved safety faults should be repaired before use. |
| Structure | Panel alignment, rear crash beam, subframe and corrosion | Structural repairs and corrosion can outweigh cosmetic condition. |
| Cabrio equipment | Repeated roof operation, latching and water ingress | Intermittent roof faults are easy to miss in a brief demonstration. |
| Electric ownership | Charging access, battery records and observed battery condition | Usability depends on the individual car, not only its original specification. |
| Repair support | Access to a Smart-capable independent shop or dealer service | A lower purchase price is less attractive if diagnosis or parts support is impractical. |
Red flags that should change the deal
- The VIN does not match the documents or the seller will not provide it for a recall check.
- The seller insists the car be inspected only after it has been warmed up.
- Warning lamps remain illuminated, disappear during a test or are accompanied by unexplained messages.
- Reverse will not engage cleanly, the transmission repeatedly selects neutral or shifts harshly with no diagnostic explanation.
- There is structural corrosion, fresh underseal over suspicious areas or evidence of poorly repaired impact damage.
- A Cabrio roof pauses, fails to latch or operates only intermittently.
- An electric car cannot complete a charging session or has no credible battery-service history.
- The seller refuses an independent inspection or cannot explain gaps in the maintenance record.
Any one symptom may have a repairable cause, but you need a written diagnosis and a realistic repair estimate before deciding. Do not convert an unknown fault into a discount based on guesswork.
Use a simple buy, negotiate or walk-away decision
- Proceed to negotiation only when the VIN, title and recall status are clear, the inspection finds no unsafe structural or high-voltage issue, and transmission, safety systems and charging or roof functions operate as expected.
- Negotiate only with evidence when a technician has identified a repair, its urgency is understood and the seller’s price reflects the documented work rather than an assumed bargain.
- Walk away when the seller blocks a VIN check or inspection, the vehicle has unresolved safety or structural faults, or the required repair support is unavailable in your area.
The best used Fortwo is not necessarily the newest or the lowest-mileage example. It is the car with a verified identity, complete enough records, completed recalls, predictable operation and a supportable repair path for its exact drivetrain.
