Before buying a Porsche 944, verify its belt and water-pump service, inspect the body and underside for corrosion or poor repairs, and test the engine, rear transaxle and age-worn systems. Treat missing maintenance records as unknown—not proof that work was done—and make an independent inspection by a Porsche specialist part of the purchase decision.
Start with the car’s identity and records
Match the VIN on the car with the title or registration, then compare mileage and dates across invoices and ownership records. Ask for documentation of timing-belt and balance-shaft-belt service, water-pump work, cooling-system repairs, clutch or transmission work, and suspension repairs. An invoice should identify the work and, ideally, mileage; a seller’s recollection alone cannot establish when maintenance occurred.

Request a vehicle-history report and check for open recalls with the authority responsible in the car’s jurisdiction. In the United States, Consumer.gov’s used-car guidance recommends reviewing records, checking recalls, test-driving the vehicle and hiring a trusted mechanic. Legal requirements and recall-checking processes differ by country.

Inspect the body and structure
Galvanized construction does not make a 944 rust-proof. Inspect the sills, wheel arches, wings, jacking points, suspension mounting areas, underside, hatch and boot floor. On early cars, include the fuel-tank area in the inspection. Look for bubbling or perforation, fresh underseal that could conceal repairs, ripples, filler, uneven panel gaps and mismatched or poorly finished repairs.

- SUPERIOR FILTRATION STANDARDS: Our spin-on oil filters are built for the unrelenting demands of today, meeting the strictest filtration standards set by the world's premier car manufacturers; Mile after rugged mile, your engine will thank you
- DIRT RETENTION AND DURABILITY: We've designed our filter media with excellent dirt-holding capacity for maximum benefits; Moreover, our filters can perform under extreme driving conditions so you can drive your best without compromising on filtration
- ESSENTIAL VALVE MECHANISMS: The return stop valve ensures keeps oil at the ready (even when the engine is off), while the PTFE-coated bypass valve helps start your car in cold climates; These valves maintain optimal lubrication for smooth starts
- MAX OPERATIONAL SAFETY: Our spin-on filters are always in the proper position thanks to the spring steel design of the flexible element guide; This design saves the delicate injection mechanism and carburetor from wear and tear
- EASY REPLACEMENT: The housing and filter element are in one integrated part with our spin-on filters, making replacement quick and easy; Design maximizes filter surface area and dirt-holding capacity to deliver only the cleanest oil to your engine
Corrosion near structural points or evidence of questionable collision repairs deserves a specialist body inspection before you commit. A clean-looking paint finish is not enough to establish that the shell is sound.
Verify belt, pump and engine history
Timing and balance-shaft belts
Ask for dated invoices naming the belt work and mileage. Published recommendations differ, and they should not be treated as one universal factory interval: Autocar gives 40,000 miles or three years; Hagerty says four years maximum; Classic & Sports Car gives 48,000 miles or four years; and Stuttcars gives 30,000–40,000 miles or five years. A reproduced schedule also describes a later Porsche Cars North America interval change for 1993–94 models (schedule page). These recommendations differ by source and model-year context, so ask a Porsche specialist to confirm the applicable schedule for the exact year and variant.

Clarify whether service included belt tension or adjustment, rollers and seals, rather than assuming every related item was replaced. If the seller cannot provide credible records, have a specialist assess the work needed and account for that uncertainty before purchase.
Water pump and leaks
Hagerty recommends changing the water pump during belt service. Check its service history and look for signs of leakage; do not assume a belt invoice means the pump was replaced. Inspect around the engine and timing-cover area for oil, because a front-engine seal leak can contaminate belts.

- The dash cover is suitable for left hand driving.
- Choose your car's year, make and model from the tab"amazonconfirmedfit" and check the dash cover fits or not.
- All defrost and AC vents are pre-cut; Usually speaker cutouts are not made because the speakers also need protection from the sun, but don't worry, the cover was made of breathable polyester, the sound can come through the cover fine.
- Pre-cut velcros are provided for easy installation.
- Don't hesitate to contact us through your order if there's any issue after purchase, we will solve it ASAP.
Fluids and running condition
Check the oil and coolant filler areas for sludge or signs of mixing. During a start and road test, note starting behavior, idle, smoothness, pulling power and smoke. These clues warrant diagnosis; none, by itself, proves a particular component has failed. If engine condition remains uncertain, ask the specialist whether compression testing is appropriate.
S and S2 camshaft chain
For an S or S2 twin-cam car, ask separately about camshaft-chain and tensioner or guide service. That is distinct from timing-belt work, so a recent belt invoice does not establish that the chain-related work was completed. Have the exact service needs checked for the variant.

Road-test the drivetrain and chassis
Drive the car long enough to observe operating temperature and behavior in normal conditions. Listen for transaxle whine and check that gears select cleanly. Feel for clutch slip or unusual vibration, steering vagueness or leaks, suspension clunks, braking problems and unstable handling.
Inspect tires for age, damage and uneven wear, and wheels for cracks. During the same drive, assess whether the engine runs smoothly and the temperature behaves as expected; investigate any abnormal noise, handling or warning signs rather than assuming the cause.

Operate the electrical equipment
Test the lights, windows, mirrors, sunroof, hatch release, seats and air conditioning if fitted. Check that switches and controls work consistently, not just once during a quick demonstration. Include faults in the inspection report so you can distinguish minor electrical repairs from broader unresolved problems.
Commission an independent Porsche specialist inspection
A pre-purchase inspection is the best way to resolve what a viewing cannot. Ask for an underbody and structural assessment, leak evaluation, review of service records, belt and water-pump status, drivetrain and chassis checks, and a written list separating urgent repairs from deferred work. Request estimates from a local specialist so you can compare the expected work with the car’s asking price.
Autocar quotes Porsche specialist Danny Kayne of Revolution Porsche recommending a pre-purchase inspection and specifically calling out corrosion, the timing belt, water pump and balance-shaft belts as pitfalls to check (Autocar’s 944 guide).

Use the same checklist for each car and compare the written evidence:
- Dated timing-belt, balance-shaft-belt, water-pump and variant-specific chain records.
- Condition of the shell and quality of repairs, especially around structural areas.
- Engine condition, leaks and any signs of fluid mixing.
- Transaxle, clutch, steering, suspension and brakes.
- Electrical equipment and interior functions.
- VIN, title, ownership and modification history.
- The specialist’s written findings and costed work list.
A lower asking price does not automatically offset uncertain structural or engine work. Compare the likely total work using local estimates; a dependable current price range or universal repair budget cannot be established without the car’s location, variant, condition, parts and labor costs.
