Acura is the most direct luxury-brand alternative to investigate if you want a used Lexus with a similar emphasis on comfort and dependability. Buick is another possibility for buyers prioritizing value and comfort, but the available evidence compares dependability—not whether a Buick matches Lexus luxury or costs less to own. Neither brand is a blanket recommendation: model year, condition, price, and maintenance needs matter more than a badge alone.

Treat that as a lead to verify against the current guide and the exact year under consideration, not as a recommendation covering every TLX. Check the guide’s year-specific recommendations before narrowing a shortlist.
Buick: a comfort-and-value possibility, not a proven Lexus substitute
Buick merits a look if a comfortable vehicle and a value-oriented purchase matter more than choosing a luxury badge. In J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick recorded 143 problems per 100 vehicles and ranked first among mass-market brands. The study does not establish that a used Buick offers Lexus-equivalent luxury, that it will be cheaper to own, or that any particular Buick model is a better buy.

Keep the comparison within the same vehicle type
Compare sedans with sedans and SUVs with SUVs, then match model years, mileage, equipment, and condition as closely as possible. The available sources do not provide a comprehensive, model-by-model comparison across Acura, Buick, Genesis, and Lexus, or establish which brand is cheapest to own. Your location and body-style preference will also shape the actual alternatives and asking prices.
What the dependability numbers do—and do not—say
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is the clearest direct comparison available here. It surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; owners were surveyed from August through November 2024. PP100 means problems per 100 vehicles; a lower score means fewer reported problems in this study. The Lexus and Buick scores are close, but they describe the surveyed three-year-old vehicles and their reported issues—not the future reliability or repair costs of an individual used car.
This study also reflects vehicles built amid industry disruption. J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton noted that “today’s three-year-old vehicles were built during a time when the industry was grappling with major disruptions.” That context is a reason to use the results as one signal, not a forecast for a specific listing.

Consumer Reports’ five-to-ten-year-old used-car comparison and J.D. Power’s three-year dependability study use different samples and time horizons. Their findings can inform a shortlist, but they should not be combined into a single ranking.
How to choose the right used alternative
- Set your practical limits. Decide on a budget, sedan or SUV, passenger and cargo needs, and how much maintenance expense you can tolerate.
- Shortlist specific years and models. Use brand reliability as a starting point, then check evidence for the exact model year. For an Acura TLX, verify whether the year you are considering is included in Consumer Reports’ current guidance.
- Compare equivalent listings. Check local asking prices for vehicles with similar model years, mileage, equipment, and condition. Include fuel economy, safety equipment, cabin comfort, and any remaining warranty or certified pre-owned coverage.
- Investigate the individual car. Review service records and vehicle history, and arrange an inspection by a qualified mechanic before buying. A brand or model reputation cannot reveal how a particular vehicle was maintained or whether it has unresolved problems.
- Estimate ownership costs, not just purchase price. Consider likely maintenance and repairs alongside fuel use and coverage. The evidence here does not establish current local prices or a model-by-model cost ranking, so verify those for the vehicles available where you live.
What to take from the reliability evidence
Acura is the strongest direct alternative to research first; Buick can be a comfort-focused, value-oriented candidate if its specific model and condition suit your needs. J.D. Power’s results show that Lexus and Buick had similar reported problem counts in its 2025 study, while Consumer Reports’ used-car coverage offers a separate reason to investigate Acura. Neither source can determine whether a particular used car is dependable, affordable, or comfortable enough for you. Make the decision at the listing level, after comparing like-for-like vehicles and checking their records and condition.
