What to Check Before Buying a Used Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or Toyota Glanza

A practical India-focused checklist for checking documents, accident repairs, mechanical condition, recalls and model-specific problems on a used Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or Toyota Glanza.

By CarCody Team

Check the paperwork and vehicle identity before you inspect the paint. Match the registration certificate (RC), VIN or chassis number and engine number; confirm insurance, pollution certification, ownership and any loan or hypothecation status. Then compare the odometer with the service book and invoices, inspect panels and paint for repairs, complete a cold start and varied road test, verify recall or campaign work by the individual VIN, and pay for an independent inspection before handing over money.

For an India-based buyer, a cited professional pre-purchase inspection typically costs ₹1,500–₹4,000. That is small compared with the cost of discovering accident repairs, a disputed loan, transmission trouble or unfinished recall work after purchase.

Use this order: documents, identity, condition, road test, independent inspection

A clean-looking used car can still have accident damage, flood exposure, an altered odometer or unresolved finance. Inspecting the body first can also waste your time if the seller cannot prove legal ownership. Follow this sequence for either model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm identity and legal status. Match the RC, VIN or chassis number and engine number on the car. Check insurance, pollution certification, ownership details and loan or hypothecation status.
  2. Audit the history. Compare the odometer reading with every dated service entry and invoice. Look for gaps, inconsistent mileage or work that the seller cannot document.
  3. Inspect the body and cabin. Check panel gaps, paint colour, paint-thickness variation, rust, flood residue, glass, trim and warning lights.
  4. Check the mechanical condition. Start the engine cold, inspect fluid leaks and listen for unusual engine or suspension noise. Examine tyre wear and the condition of the engine bay.
  5. Drive the car in varied conditions. Include stop-and-go traffic, smooth acceleration, braking, turns, rough surfaces and a faster road where legal. Test model-specific transmission and electronics.
  6. Verify campaigns by VIN or chassis number. A model name alone does not prove recall applicability or completion.
  7. Have an independent mechanic or inspection service report on the car. Use the findings to decide whether to proceed, renegotiate or walk away.

Documents and identity: establish what you are actually buying

Match every identifier

Read the VIN or chassis number and engine number directly from the vehicle and compare them with the RC and the seller’s documents. Toyota’s recall portal refers owners to the RC and sales invoice for the identifying number and asks for the “VIN / Frame Number.” Do not rely on a photograph or a number typed into a message; inspect the stamped or displayed identifier yourself.

#1 Best Overall
Car Coating Thickness Meter Paint Mil Gauge
  • Auto-Detection for Steel and Aluminum Coatings:This Coating Thickness Gauge utilizes advanced dual technology to automatically recognize ferrous and non-ferrous substrates, making it easy to measure coating thickness on both steel and aluminum without any guesswork
  • Ideal for automotive paint inspection, powder coating checks, and metal surface finishing. Commonly used on used cars, anodized aluminum, bathroom fittings, bike frames, stadium seats, lockers, appliances, and more. (Note: Designed for metallic surfaces only.)
  • A Must-Have for Used Car Buyers:Don't let hidden repairs catch you off guard. This tool lets you check the paint thickness on each car panel, helping you spot any previous accidents or repairs before buying a used vehicle
  • Save Money on Used Car Purchases:When buying used cars, this paint thickness gauge helps you identify potential issues by ensuring the paint thickness is consistent across all panels. Great for detecting accident repairs and verifying if the car has been in a heavy crash
  • Important Note: Please note that this gauge is specifically designed to measure coating thickness on metal substrates. It cannot be used on non-metallic materials such as plastic, fiberglass, or wood.

Any mismatch, altered-looking stamping, damaged plate or refusal to show the number requires a pause until the discrepancy is explained and documented. The identity check also prevents you from checking the recall history of a similar car rather than the exact car offered for sale.

Check registration, ownership and insurance

  • Confirm that the registration certificate names the person or entity selling the vehicle, or that the seller has the legally valid transfer documents.
  • Check the insurance policy details against the registration and VIN. Note the expiry date and whether the policy information is consistent with the car’s current ownership.
  • Verify the pollution certificate and its validity.
  • Ask whether any loan or hypothecation remains. Require documentary proof of closure and the lender’s release process before paying the balance. A seller’s verbal assurance is not proof that a financier has no claim.

Keep copies or photographs of the documents you relied on, subject to privacy and local legal requirements. If the seller will not permit a basic identity and finance check, treat that refusal as a reason not to proceed.

Reconcile the odometer with service evidence

Read the displayed mileage before the test drive. Compare it with the service book, workshop invoices and dated inspection records. The entries should form a plausible sequence rather than isolated numbers. A low odometer reading paired with high-mileage service work, a long undocumented gap or invoices that do not identify the car needs an explanation. Do not treat a polished cabin or new tyres as proof of low use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect accident repair, paint and flood evidence

Start with panel alignment and colour

View the car in daylight and look along the side rather than only at individual panels. Uneven panel gaps, a door or bonnet that sits higher on one side, overspray on rubber trim, mismatched paint colour and inconsistent reflections can indicate panel removal or repainting. Compare adjacent panels at the same angle; a repaired panel may look acceptable by itself but differ from the surrounding factory finish.

Paint Thickness Gauge CM-205FN for Cars – Digital Coating Thickness Meter
  • HIGH ACCURACY COATING THICKNESS MEASUREMENT – Digital paint thickness gauge for metal surfaces with 0.1 μm (0.01 mils) resolution and ±(3%+2 μm) accuracy, helping detect repainting, repairs, and uneven coating thickness during used car inspection, detailing work, and professional quality control. Suitable for checking doors, hood, roof, fenders, and other painted metal panels where accurate coating evaluation is required.
  • EASY & FAST OPERATION — FACTORY CALIBRATED – Factory calibrated and ready to use right after installing batteries. Large backlit LCD with clear readings and simple buttons make this coating thickness meter easy for professionals and first-time users. Ideal for pre-purchase vehicle checks, car dealership inspections, trade-in evaluation, and mobile appraisers who need quick and convenient measurements without complicated setup.
  • AUTOMATIC Fe / NFe SUBSTRATE DETECTION – Automatically detects Fe (steel/iron) and NFe (aluminum/copper) and selects the correct measuring method. Ideal for modern vehicles with mixed body materials and accurate results without manual switching. This helps users inspect steel doors, aluminum hoods, and other metal body parts with the correct measurement principle applied automatically.
  • WIDE MEASURING RANGE FOR AUTOMOTIVE & INDUSTRIAL USE – Measuring range 0–1500 μm (0–59.1 mils) covers factory paint, repainting layers, and thicker coatings. Suitable for car body panels and industrial coated metal parts. Whether checking original automotive paint thickness or verifying thicker coating applications on metal components, the gauge provides a practical working range for many inspection scenarios.
  • DUAL TECHNOLOGY: MAGNETIC INDUCTION + EDDY CURRENT – Uses magnetic induction for ferrous metals and eddy current technology for non-ferrous metals, providing stable, repeatable measurements across steel, iron, aluminum, and copper substrates. This dual-technology design allows one device to cover common automotive body metals without requiring separate meters or manual probe replacement.

Use paint-thickness readings as comparisons

A paint-thickness gauge is useful beside the visual inspection. Take readings across matching areas on both sides of the car and across each panel, looking for meaningful differences rather than a single supposedly perfect number. The instrument can identify variation consistent with repainting or filler, but it does not by itself prove the severity or cause of the repair. Ask the seller for repair invoices and inspect the underlying structure if a panel is materially different.

Look for rust, water residue and hidden damage

  • Inspect door bottoms, wheel arches, boot and bonnet edges, underbody areas and visible fasteners for rust or fresh coating that conceals repairs.
  • Look for flood residue or signs of water intrusion in the cabin, luggage area and engine bay. Dampness, residue or corrosion in places that should remain dry deserves professional examination.
  • Check that lamps, windows, mirrors, central locking and interior switches operate normally; water exposure can create intermittent electrical faults.
  • Inspect the spare-wheel well and carpet edges, where repair or water evidence may be less obvious than on the seats.

Do not accept a recent detailing job as evidence that the structure is sound. If paint, rust or water evidence suggests a major event, have the independent inspector examine structural points before discussing price.

Mechanical checks before and during the drive

Require a genuinely cold start

Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. From cold, watch for delayed starting, excessive vibration, smoke, warning lights or rough running. Let the engine idle and listen for unusual sounds. A seller who starts the car shortly before you arrive can hide cold-start symptoms, so ask directly when it was last run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check leaks, fluids and warning lights

  • Look beneath the engine and transmission for fresh fluid leaks and inspect accessible hoses and reservoirs.
  • With the ignition switched on, confirm that the instrument-panel warning lamps illuminate for their self-check and then go out as expected after starting. A warning lamp that stays on, returns during the drive or has been deliberately obscured requires diagnosis.
  • Inspect the engine bay for evidence of water intrusion, recent cleaning that makes leaks difficult to see, or wiring and connectors that appear disturbed.
  • Check tyre tread and wear patterns on all four wheels. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or accident-related problems and also affects the immediate cost of ownership.

Listen to the suspension and drivetrain

Drive over a controlled rough section at low speed, then make smooth turns and moderate braking inputs. Note clunks, knocking, vibration, pulling or steering that does not return naturally. A mechanic should inspect any noise rather than guessing whether it is harmless. During acceleration and deceleration, listen for drivetrain sounds and watch for hesitation or shudder.

Toyota Glanza: model-specific checks

Test the AMT as a system, if the car is so equipped

Autocar India identifies AMT gearbox health as a key used-Glanza check. On a safe, level route, confirm that the car creeps when you release the brake, moves off smoothly with light throttle and changes down without unexplained jerkiness. Repeat the test in stop-and-go traffic and on a gentle incline if conditions permit. A single awkward shift may be a driving technique issue, but repeated harsh engagement, hesitation or refusal to select a gear needs a transmission diagnosis before purchase.

Ask for service records that identify transmission-related work and compare the behaviour when the drivetrain is cold and fully warmed. Do not agree to buy on the promise that an AMT problem will be corrected later unless the repair is completed and documented.

Exercise every infotainment function

Operate the touchscreen rather than accepting a demonstration of only the home screen. Check for lag, freezing, failed touch areas and unexpected restarts. Pair your own phone and verify Android Auto and Apple CarPlay operation, audio, calls and reconnection after the ignition is cycled. Install any available software update only through the appropriate authorised process and record what was done. Electronics that work intermittently should be priced as a fault, not dismissed as a minor nuisance.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: exact market and chassis number matter

Do not transfer a Japan-market notice to every Eclipse Cross

The available official Mitsubishi notices are Japan-market documents. Use the exact market, model year and chassis number when checking an Eclipse Cross. A Japan-market campaign is a lead for investigation, not proof that an imported or locally sold vehicle is included. Mitsubishi states that chassis ranges in a campaign can contain vehicles outside the affected population and directs owners to its recall search.

Investigate the November 6, 2025 improvement notice

A Mitsubishi improvement notice dated November 6, 2025 includes Eclipse Cross vehicles with a fuel-pressure-sensor connector risk after water enters during high-pressure engine-bay washing. The stated remedy is installation of a waterproof cover and an ECU software rewrite. Ask the seller or authorised workshop for documentary proof that any applicable work was completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During the inspection, look for an engine warning light, rough running, evidence of water intrusion and a complete service record. Do not use the absence of a warning light as proof that the connector campaign does not apply; determine applicability from the chassis number and market.

Compare the two cars on ownership risk, not just purchase price

Once both vehicles pass the basic checks, compare the costs and risks that remain. A lower advertised price can disappear after tyres, deferred service, transmission work or campaign repairs.

Decision area Questions to answer before paying
Likely repair cost What faults did the inspection identify, and what written estimates cover them?
Service quality Are service-book entries and invoices complete, dated and tied to this VIN?
Accident or flood evidence Do paint variation, structural inspection, rust or water residue indicate prior damage?
Transmission behaviour Does the Glanza AMT creep, take off and downshift smoothly? Does the Eclipse Cross drive without hesitation, shudder or unusual noise?
Electronics Does the Glanza touchscreen remain responsive and pair reliably with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay?
Parts and service access Can you reach a suitable authorised or independent workshop, and are required parts available?
Campaign completion Has the exact VIN or chassis number been checked and has completed work been documented?
Remaining warranty What coverage remains, what conditions apply and are scheduled services up to date?
Consumables How much life remains in the tyres and other service items, and what will replacement cost?
Fit for the buyer Do the vehicle’s size, seating, visibility and driving dynamics suit the intended use?

Toyota says warranty service is provided through authorised centres using Toyota Genuine parts, while the owner remains responsible for scheduled maintenance. Confirm the actual warranty position for the specific used car rather than assuming that a previous owner completed every required service.

How to use an independent inspection

Book it before the final payment

Choose an inspector who is independent of the seller and arrange the examination before signing a final purchase agreement or transferring the full amount. Provide the VIN or chassis number, ask the inspector to check the documents against the car and request a written report with photographs where appropriate.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Give the inspector a focused brief

  • Verify identity, odometer consistency and evidence of accident or flood repair.
  • Inspect the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, tyres, leaks and warning lights.
  • Complete a cold start and a varied road test.
  • Check model-specific Glanza AMT and infotainment functions.
  • Assess Eclipse Cross engine-bay connectors, water intrusion evidence and campaign documentation.
  • Review recall or campaign status against the individual VIN or chassis number.

The cited India guide places a typical professional pre-purchase inspection at ₹1,500–₹4,000. Treat that as an inspection-budget range, not a guarantee of what every provider charges or what every report includes.

Red flags that should stop the transaction

  • The VIN, chassis number or engine number does not match the RC or sales documents.
  • The seller cannot establish ownership or clear a loan or hypothecation.
  • Odometer readings conflict with service records or invoices.
  • There is unexplained structural repair, extensive paint variation, rust or flood residue.
  • Warning lights remain on, the engine runs roughly or leaks are visible.
  • A Glanza AMT repeatedly jerks, hesitates, fails to creep or shifts down harshly.
  • The Glanza touchscreen freezes or cannot pair reliably with your phone.
  • The seller refuses a cold start, varied road test, VIN campaign check or independent inspection.
  • Recall or improvement work is claimed but no authorised documentation is available.

Final handover checklist

  1. Re-read the RC, VIN or chassis number and engine number at the handover.
  2. Confirm insurance, pollution certification, ownership transfer documents and loan or hypothecation release.
  3. Record the final odometer reading and retain the service book and invoices.
  4. Keep the independent inspection report and written estimates for any agreed repairs.
  5. Save Toyota campaign confirmation for a Glanza or Mitsubishi campaign documentation for an Eclipse Cross.
  6. Only then complete payment and collect every key, document and repair receipt included in the agreement.
