Buy the individual W140, not the badge or the seller’s description. The strongest candidate is a car with a sound body, complete maintenance evidence, working convenience and climate systems, and a specialist inspection that identifies any deferred repairs. A cheap W140 with rust, missing records, or several unresolved electrical and hydraulic faults can cost more than a better-documented example.
Use the sequence below to establish exactly which car you are viewing, verify its history, test every major system, and price the remaining risk before making an offer.

Start by identifying the exact W140
“W140 S-Class” covers different model years, engines, markets, and equipment. Write down the model year, engine, market specification, and every fitted suspension system before comparing cars. Equipment changes the inspection: a V12, for example, may combine power steering with a self-leveling suspension circuit, so a hydraulic symptom can involve more than ordinary steering service.

- Confirm the model year and engine from the vehicle documents and identification plate, not only the advert.
- Note the market in which the car was sold or used. Climate history matters when assessing corrosion, and parts or specialist support can vary by region.
- List fitted suspension equipment, including any self-leveling arrangement. The inspection and likely repair path depend on this configuration.
- Record the mileage shown, ownership sequence, and the date of the seller’s last documented service. Treat an unsupported mileage or verbal service claim as unverified.
Take photographs of the identification details and the equipment you find. This prevents a later comparison from mixing one car’s records with another’s and gives a specialist the information needed to prepare an inspection.

Make the appointment and records review part of the inspection
The Mercedes-Benz Club of America buyer guide describes service records as key evidence. Ask to see invoices, inspection reports, parts receipts, and ownership documentation before you commit to a deposit. Records do not guarantee a perfect car, but they show what was repaired, when it was repaired, and which expensive systems have already been addressed.
Documents to request
- Chronological invoices rather than a single recent service receipt.
- Evidence of major engine, transmission, suspension, steering, climate-control, and electrical work.
- Records identifying the workshop and the work performed, with dates and mileage where available.
- Any paperwork for a replacement engine wiring harness on a 1993–1995 car.
- Registration, inspection, or ownership records that help establish where the car lived and whether it spent time in a northern, corrosion-prone climate.
Read the invoices for patterns. A single repaired window is different from repeated electrical complaints; one documented hydraulic hose replacement is different from an unresolved warning or leak. If the seller will not provide records or allow an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a buying risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
Inspect the body and underside before admiring the interior
A polished W140 can hide corrosion. The club guide specifically warns that cars in northern climates can rust and recommends checking the body. Inspect in daylight, with the car clean enough to reveal paint defects but not freshly coated underneath.
Exterior checks
- Walk around every panel looking for bubbling paint, uneven panel gaps, mismatched color, and evidence of previous repair.
- Examine lower body areas, wheel openings, door edges, and seams where dirt and moisture can remain.
- Compare the condition of exposed fasteners and trim on both sides. One unusually fresh section can indicate localized repair.
- Open and close every door and the trunk. Misalignment, stiffness, or a door that does not seal evenly deserves further investigation.
Underside and structural checks
Put the car on a lift or inspection ramp with an experienced inspector. Look beyond visible surface corrosion at structural areas, suspension mounting points, brake and fuel lines, jacking points, and the floor. Do not accept an underbody coating as proof of sound metal; determine what is underneath it. A specialist can distinguish cosmetic oxidation from corrosion that affects strength or future repairability.
Ask the inspector to photograph any corrosion and describe its extent in writing. A small repairable area, widespread perforation, and corrosion near a structural mount are different decisions. Obtain estimates for the actual car before assigning a value to a rust-free example.

Give 1993–1995 wiring-harness history special attention
The buyer guide calls out the original biodegradable engine wiring harness used on 1993–1995 cars. Confirm whether it was replaced, when the work was done, and which parts were installed. Retain an invoice or other credible evidence; a seller’s statement that it was “checked” is not the same as documented replacement.
How to handle missing harness evidence
- Ask the seller directly whether the original harness was replaced.
- Request the invoice, workshop name, date, and mileage.
- Have a Mercedes specialist inspect the harness and related connectors without disturbing them unnecessarily.
- Obtain a written repair estimate if replacement is still indicated.
- Use that verified estimate, plus the possibility that parts may be unavailable in some cases, when deciding whether the asking price leaves enough margin.
The harness warning is an inspection prompt, not proof that every 1993–1995 car has failed. A documented replacement materially changes the uncertainty; an undocumented claim does not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOperate every convenience and electrical function
Do not infer electrical health from a clean dashboard or a working driver’s window. The guide flags electronic gremlins, vacuum-related problems, and rear-window regulator failures. Test each fitted function repeatedly, preferably with the engine running and again after the car has been driven.
Windows and regulators
- Run every window fully down and up several times.
- Listen at the rear doors for clicking, straining, or a motor that runs without moving the glass; the guide identifies clicking from the rear windows as a warning sign.
- Check that the glass stops, seals, and operates at a consistent speed.
- Try the switches from each control position provided by the car.
Locks, closing aids, and vacuum functions
- Lock and unlock every door, the trunk, and any fitted fuel-door or central-locking function.
- Operate powered closing aids and confirm that they complete their cycle rather than stopping partway.
- Listen for a vacuum pump that runs unusually long or repeatedly after the car is locked. The guide associates vacuum leaks with possible PSE pump failure.
- Leave the car locked briefly, then verify that it remains locked and that the pump does not continue cycling.
Test other installed electrical equipment one item at a time: instrument functions, mirrors, seats, sunroof, lights, audio equipment, and warning indicators. Mark each result as working, intermittent, inoperative, or not fitted. Intermittent operation is a fault, not a pass.
Test the climate system from cold to warm
Start the climate test with the car cold. Confirm that the controls respond, the blower changes speed, air reaches the selected outlets, and the system can produce both cooling and heat. Allow enough time for the temperature to stabilize rather than judging it from the first burst of air.

Why an apparently minor cooling complaint matters
The guide warns that pre-1996 evaporators may leak and that repairing an evaporator requires dashboard disassembly. Therefore, “the air conditioning only needs a recharge” is not a diagnosis. Ask for a pressure and leak assessment by a qualified technician before valuing the car. A nonworking compressor, a refrigerant leak, and an evaporator leak have different repair implications.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Check cooling performance at idle and while driving.
- Switch between hot and cold settings and observe whether the temperature changes as commanded.
- Test every fan speed and airflow direction.
- Look for dampness, unusual odors, or evidence of previous dashboard removal.
- Request a written diagnosis if cooling performance is poor.
Do not authorize or perform pressurized refrigerant work without appropriately qualified equipment and personnel. The correct purchase decision depends on diagnosing the fault, not guessing a repair cost from a symptom.
Evaluate the engine and driveline under real operating conditions
Inspect the engine bay for leaks before starting the car, then observe the complete warm-up cycle. On cars with LH-Jetronic fuel injection, the buyer guide recommends checking for leaks and smooth operation from cold start to operating temperature, especially when the car has not been driven regularly.
Cold start
- Ask that the engine be cold when you arrive; a warm engine can hide starting or idle problems.
- Observe how quickly it starts and whether it settles into a stable idle.
- Look and listen for fluid leaks, unusual mechanical noise, smoke, or fuel odor.
- Check warning lights at key-on and confirm they behave normally after the engine starts.
Warm operation and road test
- Let the engine reach operating temperature and monitor idle quality throughout the process.
- Drive at low and moderate speeds, then under the conditions the seller permits, observing hesitation, vibration, overheating indications, and transmission behavior.
- Investigate rough idle rather than accepting it as a characteristic of an old car.
- Pay attention to vibration at idle. The guide notes that collapsed fluid-filled motor mounts can cause this symptom.
- Inspect again for leaks after the road test, when fluids have circulated and components are warm.
Transmission behavior, driveline noises, and fluid condition should be recorded by the inspecting technician. A short, gentle drive cannot establish the condition of every internal component, so use it to identify symptoms that require further diagnosis, not as a substitute for inspection.
Check steering, suspension, and tires as a system
Examine the car at rest and on the road. Look for fluid leaks, uneven ride height, abnormal handling, pulling, knocking, or a suspension that does not settle normally. Inspect tire wear across the tread; an uneven pattern can point to alignment, suspension, or structural problems that are not visible from the side of the car.

V12 and self-leveling cars
On a V12, verify the power-steering system and any self-leveling suspension function together as designed. The guide notes that the V12 power-steering pump also serves the self-leveling suspension. A leak, low fluid, unusual noise, or incorrect ride height therefore warrants diagnosis by a specialist familiar with the hydraulic system rather than a generic “top up the fluid” approach.
- Turn the steering through its normal range while stationary and during the road test, listening for abnormal noise.
- Check steering assistance at low speed and stability at road speed.
- Inspect hydraulic lines, reservoirs, and visible suspension components for leakage.
- Confirm that the car sits evenly and that the ride is consistent on both sides.
- Have any hydraulic concern written up with the failed component and a repair estimate.
Price engine-specific risk instead of relying on reputation
Engine choice changes the financial exposure. The buyer guide warns that V12 service costs are substantially higher than those of six- and eight-cylinder models. It also flags the S350 Diesel for rod-bending risk. These warnings do not prove a fault in an individual car; they tell you where records and specialist diagnosis matter most.
Questions to ask for a V12
- Which major services were completed, by whom, and at what mileage?
- Are steering and self-leveling hydraulic repairs documented?
- Has the car been maintained by a workshop experienced with the V12 system?
- Does the asking price leave room for higher service exposure than a six- or eight-cylinder car?
Questions to ask for an S350 Diesel
- What maintenance and inspection evidence exists for the engine?
- Has any specialist investigated symptoms that could indicate internal engine stress?
- Are repair estimates available for any unresolved running problem?
Do not convert a model-level warning into a failure-rate claim. Use it to set the depth of inspection and the reserve you require before purchase.
Compare W140 examples on evidence, not advertised price
A clean, documented car can be a stronger purchase than a cheaper example with unresolved faults, but there is no universal price premium established for that difference. Compare the actual cars using the same categories and obtain estimates before deciding how much one is worth.

Use a written pre-purchase inspection
An independent Mercedes specialist is appropriate because the W140 combines body, electrical, vacuum, climate, engine, driveline, and hydraulic systems. Arrange the inspection with the seller’s permission, and make the report specific to the car rather than accepting a generic “passed inspection.”

Give the inspector a focused brief
- Provide the model year, engine, market, mileage, and suspension equipment.
- Point out missing records, the harness question on 1993–1995 cars, and every symptom you observed.
- Request a lift inspection for corrosion, leaks, lines, mounts, and suspension attachment areas.
- Ask for cold-start and warm-operation observations, not only a stationary scan.
- Require every defect to be classified as safety-critical, immediate, monitorable, or cosmetic.
- Obtain written estimates for faults that affect your offer, including climate, hydraulic, electrical, and corrosion work.
The report should state what was tested, what could not be tested, and whether a symptom needs further specialist diagnosis. If the seller insists on using only their workshop, you do not have an independent assessment.
Turn findings into a buying decision
Separate confirmed defects from items that still need diagnosis. Then decide whether the car remains attractive after realistic repairs and a contingency reserve.
Proceed when the evidence supports the car
- The body and underside are structurally sound for the intended use.
- Records substantiate maintenance and any major repairs relevant to the engine and equipment.
- Critical convenience, climate, steering, and suspension functions work or have clearly priced repairs.
- The specialist’s findings fit the asking price and your access to parts and qualified service.
Renegotiate or walk away when uncertainty is concentrated
- Rust affects structural areas or its extent cannot be established.
- Several electrical, vacuum, and window faults exist without diagnostic evidence.
- A pre-1996 car has unexplained climate trouble that could involve an evaporator leak.
- A 1993–1995 car has no credible harness history and the seller will not allow inspection.
- A V12 has hydraulic symptoms, or an S350 Diesel has unresolved engine concerns, with no specialist estimate.
- The seller refuses records, a cold start, a road test, or an independent inspection.
Do not subtract a guessed repair amount from the asking price. Use written estimates, account for parts availability in your region, and leave room for faults the inspection could not verify. A lower purchase price is not a saving if the unresolved work exceeds the difference.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the cleanest-looking car: cosmetics do not establish structural condition or service history.
- Accepting “everything works”: operate every window, lock, closing aid, vacuum function, and climate control yourself.
- Ignoring intermittent faults: a pump that cycles, a window that clicks, or a control that works only sometimes is evidence of a fault.
- Assuming a recharge fixes air conditioning: pre-1996 evaporator leaks can require dashboard disassembly.
- Using a generic inspection: the fitted suspension, V12 hydraulics, wiring harness, and climate system need model-aware checks.
- Comparing asking prices without repair estimates: the sources support inspection categories, not a universal premium for any condition.
- Treating model warnings as verdicts: V12 cost exposure, S350 Diesel rod-bending risk, rust, and harness degradation are prompts to verify this car’s evidence.
Final decision checklist
- Write down the exact year, engine, market, mileage, and suspension equipment.
- Review invoices and ownership evidence before negotiating.
- Inspect the body, underside, and structural areas on a lift.
- Verify the 1993–1995 wiring-harness replacement where applicable.
- Operate windows, locks, closing aids, vacuum functions, and every other fitted electrical feature.
- Test heating, cooling, airflow, and controls from a cold start; investigate any pre-1996 cooling complaint.
- Run the engine from cold to operating temperature and investigate leaks, rough idle, and vibration.
- Check steering, suspension, tires, ride height, and V12 self-leveling hydraulics where fitted.
- Obtain a written independent inspection and repair estimates.
- Make an offer only after the documented condition and the remaining risk make sense for your region and budget.
The right W140 purchase is the example whose condition can be demonstrated. Records, corrosion findings, functioning equipment, and specialist diagnosis tell you far more than the model’s reputation or a low headline price.
