A clean-looking SUV is not enough: make the purchase conditional on matching documents and an independent inspection.
The checks below are arranged in the order that limits your risk. Start with paperwork and history before spending time on a test drive, then inspect the body and chassis, test the vehicle cold and warm, and obtain written confirmation of any warranty or recall coverage from Mahindra or an authorised dealer.

1. Verify the Roxx’s identity before inspecting it
Ask to see the registration certificate, insurance policy, seller’s ownership documents, service invoices, Warranty and Service Information Guide, and the owner’s manual. The manual states that it should remain with the vehicle; its presence is useful, but it does not prove that servicing was completed.

Match the VIN everywhere
- Locate the VIN on the vehicle using the locations described in the owner’s manual.
- Compare it character by character with the registration certificate, insurance, service records, warranty documents and any finance or ownership paperwork.
- Photograph or record the VIN only after confirming that the number is legible and has not been altered.
- Stop the transaction if any document shows a different VIN, spelling of the owner’s name, engine number or registration detail. Ask Mahindra or the registering authority to resolve the discrepancy before proceeding.
Do not rely on a seller’s verbal explanation for a mismatch. A VIN error can affect ownership, insurance, warranty, recall and service-history records.

Check the odometer against dated records
Write down the mileage and date on every invoice, inspection report and insurance document. The progression should be plausible. A sudden decrease, long unexplained gap or identical mileage on multiple invoices needs a written explanation and independent verification.
2. Confirm the exact variant, engine, gearbox and drivetrain
Equipment and mechanical specification vary across the Thar Roxx range. Confirm the trim from the vehicle’s documents and VIN record, then compare it with the badges, controls and equipment actually fitted. Mahindra’s 15 August 2024 launch material lists MX1, MX3, MX5, AX3L, AX5L and AX7L variants, but model-year or market equipment can differ. Do not assume a vehicle has the features shown in a higher-trim brochure.

The power and torque figures above are manufacturer launch specifications, not independent test results. Present used-car value cannot be calculated from launch pricing; location, date, mileage, condition, variant and documented repairs determine what a particular car is worth.
Make a feature-by-feature equipment list
Before viewing the car, print or save the equipment list for its exact trim. At the vehicle, tick each item only after seeing and operating it. Check the instrument cluster, steering-wheel controls, seats, roof, cameras, sensors, infotainment display and 4WD controls rather than accepting a seller’s description.
3. Read service, accident and warranty history before the test drive
Demand primary documents
Ask for dated, itemised invoices rather than only a stamped service booklet. Invoices should identify the VIN or registration, mileage, work performed, parts used and servicing location. Look for routine maintenance as well as repeated repairs, diagnostic work, tyres, brakes, suspension and body repairs.

- Compare mileage and dates across every invoice.
- Note missed or unusually long service intervals.
- Look for accident estimates, structural repairs, repainting, airbag work or replacement seat belts.
- Identify modifications such as suspension lifts, non-standard wheels, electrical accessories or recovery equipment.
- Ask specifically about water crossings, flooding, beach use and hard off-road driving.
Have Mahindra or an authorised dealer perform a service-history and warranty-status check against the VIN. The current Mahindra care information lists a standard Thar Roxx warranty of three years or 100,000 km. That is a general term, not proof that a used vehicle still has cover. The start date, mileage limit, service compliance, claim history and exclusions belong to the individual VIN.
Check extended coverage separately
Mahindra Shield information says its coverage is associated with the VIN, can transfer to a new owner and is available before the original warranty expires. Confirm with Mahindra the exact policy name, start and end dates, transfer procedure, service requirements, exclusions and whether any claim is pending or rejected. Manufacturing defects are treated differently from wear, accident damage or misuse; obtain the written terms for the vehicle you are buying.

Request recall and campaign confirmation
A comprehensive live recall or campaign status for every Roxx, or for this particular vehicle, cannot be inferred from general model information. Require a VIN-specific check by Mahindra or an authorised dealer before payment, and ask for written proof that outstanding campaigns have been completed or will be completed as part of the sale.
4. Inspect the body and signs of repair
View the car outside in daylight, with the body clean and dry. Use a consistent walk-around so that two candidate vehicles can be compared fairly.
Panels, paint and closures
- Compare panel gaps on both sides and inspect the bonnet, doors, tailgate, bumpers and roof for uneven alignment.
- Look for differences in paint shade, texture, overspray on rubber seals, masking lines and fasteners that show a panel has been removed.
- Open and close every door, the tailgate and bonnet. They should latch without lifting, dropping or excessive force.
- Inspect windscreen and side-glass markings for mismatched dates or non-standard replacements.
- Check lamps for cracks, condensation, broken mounts and inconsistent colour.
- Inspect bumpers, recovery points, wheel arches and side steps for scrapes or deformation that may indicate off-road impacts.
Underbody and suspension
Use a lift or inspection ramp where possible. Look for fresh oil, coolant, brake-fluid or differential leaks; bent protection plates; crushed exhaust components; damaged wiring; corrosion; torn suspension bushes; leaking dampers; and impact marks on the chassis, axles, transfer case and fuel tank. A clean underside after washing can hide a leak, so ask when it was cleaned and request a second look after the drive.

Water and flood indicators
Check under carpets, inside storage areas and around seat mounts for silt, tide marks, corrosion or a persistent damp smell. Inspect connectors and lower trim for water residue. Inconsistent electrical faults, mould or unusually new carpeting deserve an independent flood-damage assessment.
5. Check tyres, wheels and emergency equipment
Inspect all four road tyres and the spare. Confirm that size, load rating and speed rating match the vehicle specification and that the tyres are suitable for the drivetrain and intended use.
- Measure tread and compare wear across the same axle.
- Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, repairs and sidewall cracking.
- Read the date code; old tyres can be unsafe even with adequate tread.
- Check for uneven inner-edge wear, which can indicate alignment, suspension or accident damage.
- Inspect wheels for cracks, bends and fresh paint over repairs.
- Confirm the spare, jack, wheel brace, towing eye and wheel-changing tools are present.
The owner’s manual covers wheel, tyre and flat-tyre procedures. A portable tyre inflator can be a useful optional roadside item, but confirm the vehicle’s pressure requirements and the inflator’s connector, pressure range and power compatibility before buying one.
6. Inspect the cabin and start-up sequence
Interior condition
Compare seat, steering-wheel, pedal and switch wear with the claimed mileage. Excessive wear, replaced upholstery or a mismatched steering wheel can indicate heavy use or refurbishment. Check seat adjustment, belts, buckles, child-seat anchors, head restraints, mirrors, windows, locks, lights, wipers, horn, climate controls and 12-volt or USB outlets.
Warning-lamp self-test
Request a cold start. Before the engine fires, warning lamps should illuminate as part of the self-test; after starting, they should go out unless a condition requires attention. A lamp that never illuminates may have been disabled, while a lamp that remains on requires diagnosis. Photograph any message or symbol and do not accept “it always does that” without a diagnostic report.

Fluids, smoke and idle quality
With the engine cold, check for unusual oil or coolant levels, contaminated fluid, leaks and damaged caps. Observe the exhaust during start-up and warm-up for persistent smoke. Listen for uneven idle, rattles, belt noise or excessive vibration. A qualified technician should interpret any noise rather than relying on a short seller-led drive.
7. Take a controlled test drive
Drive long enough to test the car cold and warm, on smooth and rough surfaces, at low and moderate speeds, and in stop-start traffic where legal and safe. Keep the radio off while listening for mechanical noises.
- Confirm that the engine starts promptly and settles to a stable idle.
- Accelerate gently and firmly. Check for hesitation, smoke, misfire, abnormal vibration or a lack of expected response.
- On a manual, test clutch take-up, bite-point consistency, gear selection and reverse. Slipping under load or a clutch that engages at the top of its travel needs pricing.
- On the automatic, check for delayed engagement, harsh shifts, flare between gears, shudder or warning messages.
- Release the steering briefly on a safe, straight road to identify persistent pull; do not treat road camber alone as a fault.
- Brake progressively and firmly where safe. The pedal should remain consistent, with no pull, judder, grinding or vibration.
- Listen over bumps for suspension knocks and at steady speed for wheel-bearing or driveline hum.
- After the drive, inspect for new fluid leaks, overheating indications or a hot-oil smell.
Use the owner’s manual to interpret model-specific warnings and functions. An authorised diagnostic scan is appropriate for unresolved warning messages, intermittent faults or evidence that modules have been reset.

Operate every feature fitted to the exact vehicle, not just the systems shown in an advertisement.
- Pair a phone and test calls, audio and the infotainment screen.
- Check the reverse camera, surround-view display, parking sensors and any camera calibration message.
- Test air conditioning in all fan speeds and temperature settings.
- Operate electric windows, central locking, mirrors, seat adjustment, roof controls and interior lights.
- Check tyre-pressure monitoring and confirm that the displayed pressures agree with a manual gauge.
- Look for intermittent screen resets, dead pixels, flickering lights or parasitic battery symptoms.
Mahindra’s launch material describes available six airbags, seat-belt reminders, ISOFIX, Level 2 driver-assistance features, a 360-degree camera and TPMS, depending on variant. Verify the actual car’s equipment and operation; never infer it from a higher trim.

9. Pay special attention to 4WD hardware
For a 4WD Roxx, confirm the transfer-case controls and terrain modes listed for that variant. Mahindra launch materials describe 4XPLOR and terrain modes on applicable configurations. Test switches, indicators and engagement only in conditions and in the manner permitted by the owner’s manual; incorrect engagement can cause damage. A competent 4WD technician should inspect the transfer case, propeller shafts, differentials, CV joints, axle seals and underbody protection for leaks, play or impact damage.
A claimed 650 mm water-wading depth is a manufacturer specification, not evidence that a used vehicle has been through water safely or that its seals and electronics remain sound. Treat any water-exposure evidence as a separate risk.
10. Check diesel emissions equipment when applicable
Diesel Roxx versions may use diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems. The owner’s manual requires the prescribed maintenance schedule, and Mahindra’s care information describes diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) for BS VI diesel SUVs equipped with SCR.

- Confirm whether the particular VIN has SCR and uses DEF; do not assume a petrol vehicle needs it.
- Review invoices for DPF, SCR, DEF and emissions-related work.
- Check for DPF, emissions, engine or DEF warnings during start-up and the drive.
- Ask an authorised workshop to read stored fault codes and confirm that regeneration and sensor systems operate normally.
- Do not accept a warning reset without identifying and repairing its cause.
11. Use an independent inspection before signing
Arrange an inspection with a technician who is independent of the seller. Provide the VIN and ask for a written report covering body structure, paint, airbags, diagnostics, engine, transmission, 4WD hardware, suspension, brakes, tyres, leaks and flood or accident indicators. Give the inspector permission to use a lift and scan the vehicle’s control modules.
Ask the seller to disclose known accidents, repairs, modifications and outstanding faults in writing. Price each repair using a written estimate from an appropriate workshop. Include tyres, brakes, suspension, electronic modules, emissions components and 4WD repairs in your calculation; a low purchase price can disappear quickly when deferred maintenance is added.
12. Compare two used Roxx examples consistently

13. Conditions to meet before paying
- VIN and ownership documents match the vehicle.
- The exact variant and drivetrain are confirmed.
- Service invoices and mileage progression are credible.
- An independent inspection finds no unresolved safety or structural issue.
- Mahindra or an authorised dealer confirms VIN-specific warranty, transfer status and recall or campaign status.
- Any repair, accessory or disclosure promised by the seller is written into the purchase agreement.
- The final price reflects documented repair needs and consumables.
If a seller refuses a VIN check, original documents, a cold start or an independent inspection, pause the purchase. Resolve the refusal before negotiating further; pressure to pay a deposit is not a substitute for evidence.
What is not established by general published information
A Bharat NCAP Thar Roxx page identifies AX5L and MX3 as tested variants, but the page could not be retrieved reliably for this check. No star rating, score, test date or occupant-protection result should therefore be quoted without consulting the current Bharat NCAP record directly.
There is no established independent comparative reliability statistic, used-Roxx failure rate or field-test result here. Manufacturer specifications, warranty terms and launch equipment lists cannot predict the condition of an individual used vehicle. The VIN documents, inspection report and diagnostic results carry more weight than a brochure claim.
