Buy the individual car, not the model name. Build a history file before inspecting the mechanics
A clean-looking car can still have neglected maintenance or accident repairs. Ask the seller for a continuous set of service records, repair invoices and inspection reports. Look for dates, mileage at each visit, work descriptions and the name of the workshop. The purpose is not to find a particular “magic” mileage figure; it is to see whether the odometer reading and the pattern of work make sense together.
Records to request
- Service-book entries and invoices covering routine maintenance.
- Invoices for major repairs, bodywork or replacement parts.
- Records of tyre, battery and other consumable replacements, with dates and mileage where available.
- The correct owner’s manual and any notices or correspondence concerning recalls.
- Evidence that the person selling the vehicle can lawfully complete the transaction. For the precise registration, transfer, insurance and tax documents required in your area, consult the local authority or a qualified professional rather than relying on a generic internet checklist.
Compare the written mileage with the condition of the steering wheel, pedals, seat, door hinges, tyres and service entries. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof of tampering. If records stop for long periods, treat the missing history as uncertainty and price or reject the car accordingly.
Check Hyundai recall status using the VIN
Use Hyundai India’s official “Latest Customer Notifications & Updates” recall page and enter the car’s VIN. Hyundai says affected customers may be notified and provides a VIN lookup. A result should be confirmed with Hyundai or an authorised workshop before you assume that a campaign is complete, unnecessary or applicable to your exact vehicle.

Keep a screenshot or written confirmation of the lookup result with the car’s records. A recall check is not a substitute for a mechanical inspection: it addresses campaigns identified by the manufacturer, while wear, damage and poor repairs can exist independently.
Inspect the car before starting the engine
Arrange to see the car when the engine is cold. Ask the seller not to warm it up immediately before you arrive. A cold inspection can reveal starting behaviour and leaks that may be hidden after the engine has been running. Park on a level, well-lit surface and use a torch; do not crawl under an unsupported vehicle.

Body, structure and signs of repair
- Walk around the car looking for differences in paint colour, texture, panel gaps and the alignment of doors, bonnet and tailgate.
- Look for overspray on rubber seals, lamps or trim, weld marks, ripples in panels and uneven underbody coatings. These observations can indicate repair, but they do not establish the severity or quality of previous damage.
- Check that doors, bonnet and tailgate open, close and latch without unusual force.
- Inspect glass, lamps, mirrors, seat belts and visible trim for cracks, looseness or missing parts.
Do not declare a car structurally sound from an exterior walk-around. If you see a suspected impact repair, have a qualified inspector examine the structure on a lift before you negotiate or commit.
Tyres and wheels
The Santro owner manual includes tyre checks. Examine all four tyres and the spare for low pressure, cuts, bulges, exposed cords, cracking and uneven tread wear. Compare wear across the tread and between the left and right sides. Uneven wear may involve alignment, suspension, steering or tyre problems; the tyre itself may also simply be worn out. Check that the wheel rims are not visibly bent or cracked and ask for the correct pressure specification in the vehicle’s manual or label.

Look beneath the engine bay and on the ground for fresh or dried fluid traces. Note the colour and location without guessing the fluid’s identity. Check the engine-oil level and appearance using the procedure in the correct manual. Inspect the coolant reservoir and hoses for low level, staining, cracks or dampness.
Never open a hot cooling system. Hyundai’s Santro manual warns that hot coolant or steam can cause serious burns. Wait until the system is safely cool, keep hands and face away from the cap, and have a workshop investigate any loss of coolant or visible leak.
Radiator and condenser area
Look through the front grille for leaves, mud, bent fins, impact damage or anything blocking the radiator or condenser face. Do not straighten delicate fins aggressively or poke tools into the assembly. A blocked or damaged heat exchanger can affect cooling and air-conditioning performance, and requires professional assessment if the condition is significant.

Start and warm the car while observing warning signs
With the transmission in the appropriate safe position and the parking brake applied, start the engine according to the owner’s manual. Watch the instrument panel during the start and after the engine settles. Warning lamps that remain illuminated, flashing lamps, unusual smoke or an unstable idle should be recorded and diagnosed rather than explained away as “old-car character.”

Listen from inside and outside for knocking, grinding, persistent rattling, squealing or hissing. Observe the exhaust after the engine has warmed: unusual colour, smell or volume is a reason for a professional diagnosis. A short observation cannot identify every fault, but it can identify reasons not to proceed without further testing.
Ask the seller to demonstrate the air conditioner, heater, blower speeds, lights, wipers, washers, horn, instrument displays, power windows, central locking and any fitted audio or safety equipment. Record each item that does not work and obtain a repair estimate from a workshop before treating it as a bargaining point.
Take a controlled test drive
Choose a legal, familiar route with a quiet section, a level road and safe opportunities to stop. The seller should be present if required by the owner or insurance arrangements. Wear seat belts and do not test a suspected brake or steering fault at speed. The drive is an observation, not a certification.
Steering and straight-line behaviour
- At low speed, turn the wheel smoothly and note looseness, binding, knocking or unusually high effort.
- On a level, safe road, check whether the car consistently pulls to one side. Road camber can create a mild tendency, so have a workshop verify any persistent or strong pull.
- Notice vibration through the steering wheel, especially when braking or at a particular speed. Record when it occurs rather than diagnosing it yourself.
Hyundai’s manual identifies steering vibration, looseness and increased effort as warning signs to bring to a dealer. If steering control feels unsafe, stop driving and arrange an inspection before road use or purchase.

Braking
Apply the brakes progressively in a clear area. The pedal should not feel abnormally hard, sink excessively or require repeated pumping. Notice pulling, pulsation, grinding, scraping, unusual noise and whether the stopping response changes during the drive. Test the parking brake on a safe, modest incline only when you can do so without risk. Any brake concern is safety-critical: have the car assessed before negotiating a price or driving it home.
Clutch and manual transmission
If the car has a manual gearbox, select each gear while stationary and then during normal driving. Note difficulty engaging a gear, grinding, a clutch that engages at an unusual point, shuddering, slipping under gentle acceleration or a pedal that changes feel. These symptoms require diagnosis; the evidence available for this guide does not establish a Santro Xing-specific failure rate or typical repair cost.
Automatic or other transmission operation

What to give the inspector
- The exact model year, variant, fuel type and transmission.
- The VIN and any recall result.
- Service records, invoices and the seller’s statements about prior repairs.
- A list of symptoms you observed, including when they occurred during the drive.
Ask the inspector to separate urgent safety defects, items needing near-term maintenance and cosmetic observations. Request photographs or written descriptions and ask whether a finding requires a lift, pressure test, scan, measurement or specialist diagnosis. Do not treat a generic “passed” statement as a warranty or guarantee of future reliability.
Compare two or more Santro Xing cars consistently

Pause the transaction if the VIN does not match, the seller refuses a cold start or independent inspection, records contradict the car, or a recall result cannot be clarified. Stop the test drive if braking or steering becomes unsafe, the temperature rises abnormally, warning lamps appear with serious symptoms, or the vehicle develops heavy smoke, a strong burning smell or loss of control.
A minor cosmetic defect and an unresolved brake concern are not equivalent bargaining points. Ask a qualified mechanic to classify each finding before you make an offer. If the seller will not allow the required inspection, the uncertainty itself is a purchase risk.
Questions this inspection cannot answer by itself
