The safest way to buy a used Hyundai Grand i10 is to identify the exact variant, verify its documents and service history, inspect safety-critical systems, drive it from cold, and pay for an independent inspection before you transfer the balance. “Grand i10” can mean the original Grand i10 or a later Grand i10 Nios, and schedules differ by model year, engine, fuel, transmission, trim and market. The original Grand i10 and the later Grand i10 Nios have different manuals and may have different equipment and maintenance requirements. Hyundai’s current manual index lists separate Nios manual ranges, including August 2019–August 2023 and August 2023–December 2025. That does not make either range applicable to every Grand i10. Use the manual for the car in front of you, including its fuel and transmission configuration.

Confirm the market and legal requirements
This guide’s schedule references are primarily for India-market cars. Ownership-transfer documents, emissions paperwork, inspection rules and insurance requirements vary by location. The model name alone cannot establish what paperwork is legally required. Check the relevant transport authority or a Hyundai representative for the rules that apply where the car is registered.
Run a VIN-based recall and campaign check
Ask Hyundai or the relevant authority to check the VIN for open safety recalls or service campaigns. Do not infer recall status from the model name, registration year or a seller’s assurance. A vehicle-specific result requires the actual VIN.
2. Verify the car, seller and paperwork before inspecting condition

- Compare the VIN and registration number on the vehicle with the registration certificate, insurance policy and service records.
- Confirm the seller is the registered owner or has documented authority to sell the car.
- Check that the engine number, where recorded in your jurisdiction, agrees with the paperwork.
- Look for inconsistent spelling, altered dates, missing pages or documents that refer to a different trim or fuel type.
- Ask whether the car has been used as a taxi, rental, fleet vehicle or commercial vehicle; have that status documented rather than relying on a verbal answer.
Build a complete ownership file
Request ownership history, insurance records, transfer forms required locally, pollution or inspection certificates where applicable, and every available service invoice or booklet entry. Hyundai states that maintenance and record retention are the owner’s responsibility and recommends keeping documents that show scheduled servicing. Use the matching manual
Find the Hyundai manual for the exact model-year range, engine, fuel and transmission. An interval for a current petrol Grand i10 Nios should not be copied onto an older Grand i10, a diesel, a CNG vehicle or another market variant.

Hyundai’s current petrol Grand i10 Nios maintenance page lists engine-oil and oil-filter replacement every 10,000 km or one year. This is a manufacturer-listed interval for that current India-market petrol Nios schedule; it is not a universal Grand i10 rule. Other components have different intervals, so check each item in the applicable manual.
Audit the records for gaps
- Write down the mileage and date at every service.
- Check that oil, filters, brakes, tyres and other documented work follow the intervals in the applicable manual.
- Separate routine servicing from repairs. A large invoice may represent one repair rather than comprehensive maintenance.
- Ask for explanations and supporting invoices for long periods with no records.
- Look for repeated odometer discrepancies or service entries that do not match the car’s apparent age and wear.

4. Inspect the exterior, glass and tyres

Look for accident, flood and poor-repair clues
- Compare paint colour and texture across adjacent panels. Overspray on rubber seals, uneven panel gaps or fasteners with disturbed paint can indicate repairs.
- Check the bonnet, boot floor, spare-wheel well and door apertures for ripples, weld marks, standing-water staining or fresh sealant.
- Inspect the underside of carpets and trim for dampness, mould or a strong cleaning fragrance that could conceal water exposure.
- Examine all glass for cracks, chips and mismatched markings. Replacement glass is not automatically a problem, but ask why it was replaced.
- Check headlamps, tail lamps, indicators and reflectors for cracks, condensation or mismatched condition.
Hyundai’s checklist includes tyre condition and rotation, but it does not establish a used-car pass/fail tread-depth threshold or a body-repair standard. A tread gauge can measure remaining tread; it cannot determine whether the whole car is roadworthy.

Evaluate each tyre, not just the average
- Confirm all tyres are the correct size and load specification for the car.
- Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, sidewall cracking and repairs near the shoulder.
- Check tread wear across the inner, centre and outer sections. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or inflation problems.
- Compare tyre brands, patterns and ages. A mixed set may be serviceable, but ask why tyres were replaced individually.
- Inspect the spare tyre, jack and wheel-removal tools.
Inspect wheels and visible chassis areas
Check alloy or steel wheels for cracks, bends and heavy kerb damage. Look behind the wheels for damaged brake components, leaking shocks or heavily corroded fasteners, but do not touch hot parts. A professional inspection on a lift is needed for areas you cannot see safely.
5. Check warning lamps, airbags and electrical equipment
Perform the dashboard check with the seller’s permission and observe the complete ignition sequence.
Use the warning-light self-test
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Confirm that the expected warning lamps illuminate briefly. A lamp that never appears may have been disabled or may indicate a fault.
- Start the engine and watch which lamps go out.
- Do not buy the car without diagnosing any lamp that remains on, flashes, or behaves differently from the manual’s instructions.
The dashboard is only a screening check. Have a technician scan for stored faults and examine safety systems; a clear-looking dashboard does not prove that every system works.
Test the equipment one function at a time
- Headlights, high beam, indicators, hazard lamps, tail lamps, brake lamps and reverse lamps.
- Horn, windscreen washers, wipers and all available wiper speeds.
- Instrument gauges, trip computer, climate controls, air-conditioning, heater fan and demister.
- Power windows, central locking, remote controls and interior lighting.
- Audio, phone connectivity and charging sockets if fitted.
- Seatbelts for smooth extension, secure latching and proper retraction.
- Airbag warning indication and any visible damage, gaps or trim disturbance around airbag locations.
Hyundai’s later Nios checklist specifically covers warning-light operation, electrical systems, exterior lights, gauges and airbag-belt operation. A qualified inspector should verify faults and safety equipment rather than treating an apparently normal test as proof of condition.
6. Inspect the engine bay and underbody safely
Ask the seller to provide a cold-start opportunity. Do not put hands near belts, fans or other moving components, and do not touch hot engine or exhaust parts.
Under the bonnet
- Look for fresh oil, coolant, brake-fluid or fuel leakage and for old staining that has been aggressively cleaned.
- Check hoses, wiring, clamps and connectors for cracking, improvised repairs or damage from rodents.
- Inspect fluid levels and condition against the manual’s guidance. Do not diagnose an internal fault from fluid colour alone.
- Compare the condition of the engine bay with the documented mileage. A very clean bay is not automatically good or bad; ask how it was cleaned and why.
- Listen for abnormal rattles, belt noise or uneven running after the engine starts.
On a lift
Have an independent technician inspect the steering rack and linkage, steering boots, wheel bearings, suspension bushes, shock absorbers, brakes, exhaust and fuel system for leakage or damage. Hyundai’s checklist includes these areas. The technician should identify what is unsafe, what needs attention soon and what is ordinary wear, with written estimates where possible.

7. Take a controlled road test
Drive only when the car is legally insured and the seller permits it. Choose a route that includes smooth pavement, rougher surfaces, low-speed turns, a safe braking area and normal traffic.

Cold start and idle
Observe how quickly the engine starts, whether idle settles smoothly and whether warning lamps remain on. A cold start reveals issues that may disappear after the engine is warm, so avoid accepting a pre-warmed car without asking why it was started.
Acceleration and transmission
Test gentle and moderate acceleration. The engine should respond predictably without unexplained hesitation, surging or smoke. For a manual, check clutch take-up, gear selection and any clutch slip under load. For an automatic or automated manual, check engagement, creep, shifts and reverse selection without harsh delay or repeated warning messages. The exact symptom threshold depends on the transmission and requires a technician’s diagnosis.
Steering, suspension and braking
- On a straight, safe road, note whether the car tracks consistently and whether the steering returns after a turn.
- Drive over controlled, moderate imperfections and listen for knocks, rattles or repeated bouncing.
- Brake progressively and then more firmly where safe. Watch for pulling, vibration, unusual pedal travel or warning indications.
- Listen for wheel-bearing or tyre noise that changes with speed or cornering.
Climate control and cabin operation
Run the air-conditioning long enough to check cooling, fan speeds, temperature changes and demisting. Operate windows, locks, mirrors and other controls while driving only when safe; otherwise test them before or after the road test.
Hyundai’s checklist calls for a road test, but the available manufacturer material does not provide model-specific symptom thresholds. Record observations and let an independent technician determine whether a symptom is normal operation, wear or a safety defect.
8. Pay for an independent inspection before paying the balance
A seller’s mechanic may be competent, but an independent inspection protects the buyer’s decision. Use a qualified independent mechanic or a Hyundai service centre with the correct tools and ask for a written report tied to the VIN.

Give the inspector a focused brief
- Confirm the exact model year, engine, fuel type, transmission and market.
- Request a diagnostic scan, lift inspection, brake and tyre assessment, fluid-leak check and road-test evaluation.
- Ask for photographs or clear descriptions of accident repair, corrosion, fluid leaks and safety-system faults.
- Separate urgent safety repairs from maintenance due soon and cosmetic work.
- Obtain parts and labour estimates from the inspecting facility or another qualified provider.
Hyundai cautions that inadequate servicing can cause operating problems and recommends authorized service when an owner lacks the necessary knowledge, experience or tools. That is a reason to obtain competent professional inspection, not a reason to assume dealership servicing proves the individual car is sound.
Use inspection results as a decision gate
Do not negotiate only from the asking price. Add the cost of tyres, brakes, fluids, scheduled servicing, suspension work and document corrections that are required immediately. If the inspector cannot establish the condition of a safety-critical system, treat that uncertainty as a risk and resolve it before purchase.
9. Compare listings on condition, not just year and price

11. A practical buying-day sequence
- Meet at the seller’s registered address or another safe location and inspect the original documents.
- Record the VIN, registration, model year, engine, fuel, transmission and trim.
- Check the VIN for open recalls or campaigns with Hyundai or the relevant authority.
- Review service records chronologically and reconcile mileage.
- Inspect bodywork, glass, lights, tyres, wheels and interior for accident, flood and wear clues.
- Perform the ignition warning-lamp and electrical-equipment checks.
