Start by confirming the exact year, engine, transmission, trim and market: inspection details and parts availability can differ, and there is no single best year established for every buyer.
1. Verify the car and its history before you meet
- Match the VIN and title. Ask for the VIN, title status, year, trim, engine and transmission. Compare the VIN on the car with the title and paperwork; resolve any mismatch before proceeding.
- Ask for dated service records. Look especially for invoices documenting timing-belt and water-pump service. Check dates and odometer readings rather than relying on a verbal assurance or an undated note. If records do not verify the work, ask a mechanic to assess what maintenance is due and factor that into your decision.
- Compare mileage evidence. Review a vehicle-history report and compare its mileage entries with the odometer, title and service or inspection records. NHTSA advises using records and the car’s physical condition as clues; some older vehicles may be exempt from federal written mileage-disclosure requirements, so a title disclosure alone is not conclusive. NHTSA estimates more than 450,000 vehicles are sold each year with false odometer readings (NHTSA Odometer Fraud).
- Check for unrepaired recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup. Its results may omit recalls already repaired, some newly announced campaigns, and recalls more than 15 years old, so treat the lookup as one part of the history check.
- If buying from a U.S. dealer, read the Buyers Guide. Check which major mechanical and electrical systems it covers and whether the sale is as-is or includes a warranty. U.S. consumer guidance also recommends reviewing the vehicle history, recalls, service records and taking a test drive (consumer.gov: Buying a Used Car).
2. Inspect the body, underside and cabin for rust or water
Look closely for corrosion
Inspect the rear wheel arches, rocker panels, quarter panels, floor and underside. Pay special attention to repaired areas: patching or fresh undercoating can make it harder to see the underlying condition. Rust at structural areas can turn what looks like a cosmetic problem into a much larger repair, so have uncertain corrosion assessed on a lift.

Check the trunk and sunroof area for water
Lift the trunk carpet and inspect the spare-wheel well for dampness, water stains or corrosion. Check body seams and around the tail lights for signs of entry. If the car has a sunroof, inspect its channels, drains and surrounding trim for evidence of leaks. Owner reports point to rear-arch rust and tail-light-seal-related trunk water as useful inspection leads, but they do not establish how common those problems are (PreludePower owner discussion).

Check fluids and visible components
With the engine cool, check oil and coolant level and appearance. Look over the radiator and hoses, and inspect visible areas around the valve cover, VTEC solenoid and other seals for leaks. A clean idle by itself does not establish engine health.

Watch for overheating clues
Look for coolant loss or other cooling-system irregularities. If you see bubbling, contamination or signs of overheating, have a shop diagnose the cause rather than treating a quick visual check as a verdict.
Use compression and leakdown tests as diagnostic checks
A Prelude-specific inspection guide recommends compression and leakdown testing. Ask a mechanic to perform and interpret the tests using specifications and procedures appropriate to the exact engine; there is no single pass/fail figure that applies to every Prelude. A compression tester can help with preliminary screening, but it cannot replace an inspection of the whole car (J.D. Power: What to Look for When Buying a Used Honda Prelude).

4. Test the transmission and trim-specific equipment
Automatic transmission
Check engagement into Drive and Reverse, then assess shifts under light and moderate throttle. Delayed engagement, slipping, flare or harsh shifts need diagnosis; do not assume a brief test drive rules out a transmission problem.
Manual transmission
Check clutch take-up and shift through every gear without forcing the lever. Pay particular attention to second gear for grinding, which the Prelude-specific guide identifies as a concern to assess.

Type SH and ATTS
If the car is a Type SH, check warning-light behavior and ask for records of correct ATTS fluid service. Have a specialist investigate warning lights, binding in tight turns or abnormal operation. The guide identifies fluid, switches and pump wear as possible areas of concern; a symptom alone does not identify the failed part.
5. Start cold, drive it and test the equipment
- Start with a cold engine if possible. Observe starting, idle, smoke and unusual noises. A seller who has already warmed the car may make a cold-start assessment impossible.
- Drive until the car is warm. Include low-speed maneuvers and normal acceleration so you can assess engine behavior and transmission operation in more than one condition.
- Test the brakes, steering and suspension. Listen for knocks or wheel and axle noises; note braking noise, vibration or unusual effort. Honda’s general CPO inspection checklist includes suspension, CV-joint/drive-axle and brake checks, but it is not a Prelude-specific endorsement or guarantee (Honda Certified Pre-Owned benefits).
- Check warning lights and electrical equipment. Confirm dashboard lights illuminate at startup and go out as expected. Test HVAC, windows, locks, lights, switches and other fitted equipment, including the air conditioning.
6. Arrange an independent inspection before agreeing to buy
Pay a mechanic you trust to inspect the specific car, including its underside, leaks, cooling system, engine condition and transmission. Tell the shop the exact year, engine, transmission and trim, and mention any symptoms you noticed. Consumer.gov’s U.S. guidance puts it plainly: “Hire a mechanic you trust to inspect the car” (consumer.gov).

If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, stop. If the mechanic finds a repairable issue, get a written diagnosis and current local estimate before negotiating. Older-car repair costs vary with location, parts availability and condition, so generic published estimates are not a reliable quote for the particular car.

7. Compare candidates on condition, not a supposed best year
When comparing two Preludes, rank the evidence that affects the car in front of you:

These checks help compare actual cars, but they do not establish a universally best generation or a current fair-price ranking. Confirm maintenance requirements for the specific year, engine and market with an appropriately qualified shop.
