It cannot account for today’s age, mileage, ownership history, condition, regional demand or repair costs. Treat it only as historical context.

A sound purchase is one in which the papers, mechanical evidence and price agree. A low asking price is not a bargain if the clutch, air-conditioning system, gearbox or overdue maintenance consumes the difference immediately. Conversely, a higher-priced car with complete records and a clean inspection may carry less financial risk.
Prepare before you travel to see the car
Ask for the minimum information
- Registration number and a clear copy or photograph of the registration certificate (RC).
- The vehicle identification details shown on the car and its documents.
- Manufacturing or registration year, engine and transmission type, stated variant and current odometer reading.
- Names of current and previous owners, and whether a loan or hypothecation is still recorded.
- Dates and mileages from service-book entries, invoices and inspection reports.
- Whether the seller will permit a cold start, a meaningful road test and an independent inspection on a lift.
Ask for documents before making a long trip. A seller who will not share the basic identity of the vehicle or who insists on a rushed payment has removed your ability to check the car properly.
Bring a simple inspection kit
Take a torch, paper towel, phone camera and a tyre-pressure gauge if you have one. These are aids for observing the car, not substitutes for a qualified mechanic. Use this inspection sequence
1. Check identity, condition and paperwork before starting the engine
- Compare the registration number, vehicle identification details and engine details with the RC and the car. Record discrepancies in writing; do not rely on a verbal promise that they can be corrected later.
- Check that the seller’s identity matches the registered owner or that the seller can show a legally documented authority to sell.
- Walk around the vehicle in daylight. Look for mismatched paint shade, uneven panel gaps, overspray on rubber seals, cracked lamps, glass markings, corrosion, flood residue and evidence of poorly repaired impact damage. These are general inspection indicators; a body specialist should assess structural repairs.
- Inspect the engine bay, underbody and parking area for fresh or accumulated fluid leaks. A recently washed engine can hide seepage, so ask the mechanic to inspect it on a lift.
- Check warning lights with the ignition switched on before starting. The warning lamps should illuminate for their self-check and then behave normally after the engine starts. A missing lamp, an illuminated warning or an instrument cluster that does not self-check requires diagnosis.
- Confirm that the tyres, spare wheel, jack and required tools are present and note uneven tyre wear. Uneven wear can result from alignment, suspension or accident issues and needs a professional opinion.
2. Ask for a cold start
Visit when the engine has been off long enough to become cold, and ask the seller not to start it before you arrive. A cold start can reveal difficult starting, excessive smoke, abnormal noise or unstable idle that may be less obvious when warm. Let the mechanic interpret what is observed; a single start does not prove the engine’s internal condition.

3. Test the car at low and moderate speeds
- Drive in a safe area with the radio off and windows closed, then repeat with the air conditioner operating. Listen for knocks, rattles, driveline vibration, wheel-bearing hum and brake noise.
- Use normal starts, stops, turns and inclines where safe. Note steering pull, brake-pedal pulsation, clutch engagement, gear selection and any warning message.
- Do not treat a short drive as a diagnosis. Record symptoms and have a mechanic reproduce and price them.
4. Finish with an independent lift and diagnostic inspection
Have a qualified, independent mechanic inspect the suspension, steering, brakes, underbody, driveshafts, fluid leaks, cooling system, engine and transmission. Ask for a written list separating safety-critical work, reliability work and cosmetic items, with parts and labour estimates. A pre-purchase inspection is most useful when the sale is conditional on its findings.
EcoSport-specific checks during the test drive
Manual clutch: investigate a springy pedal
Autocar’s guide says to check whether the clutch pedal feels springy on manual versions, a possible sign of clutch-plate wear. Press the pedal through its travel, move off smoothly and change through the gears in ordinary traffic. Slipping under load, an engagement point that is unusually high, shuddering or difficulty selecting gears should be reported to the mechanic. Do not conclude that a clutch replacement is required from pedal feel alone; diagnosis must establish whether the fault is the clutch, hydraulic system or another component.
Air conditioning: test cooling after the cabin heats up
The same guide reports owner complaints about insufficient cooling and advises ensuring that the air conditioner cools the cabin quickly and effectively. Test it after the parked cabin has warmed, use the normal fan and temperature controls, and check that cooling remains effective while driving. Poor cooling can have several causes, including refrigerant, compressor, condenser, electrical or airflow faults. Obtain a diagnosis and written estimate rather than accepting a refrigerant top-up as a complete repair.

On an automatic example, select the required modes only as the handbook permits and observe take-off, upshifts and downshifts in gentle and normal driving. Autocar specifically flags jerky shifts as a warning sign. A brief drive cannot determine whether the cause is software, fluid, clutch packs, mounts or internal wear, so any jolt, delay, flare or warning light warrants a transmission specialist’s assessment and a repair estimate before negotiation.

Engine and drivetrain observations
Identify whether the car is petrol, turbo-petrol or diesel before judging how it suits you. Check starting, idle stability, throttle response, smoke, temperature behaviour and fluid levels, but leave compression, injection, turbocharger and cooling-system diagnosis to the mechanic. Confirm the year, variant and equipment yourself

Ask whether finance or hypothecation is recorded. If a lender has an interest, obtain the applicable lender clearance or no-objection certificate before transfer and verify that the record can be removed through the registering authority. Do not hand over the full price merely because the seller says the loan will be closed later.

Use the current checklist for this transaction
Haryana Transport’s FAQ describes ownership-transfer documents and, in the hire-purchase or death-transfer situations it covers, refers to Forms 30 and 31 and a financier NOC. Those examples are not a universal checklist for every ordinary sale. Confirm the documents, fees, appointment requirements and applicable office with the registering authority for this vehicle and transaction. Keep signed copies of the sale agreement, payment record, delivery note, keys and every document handed over.

What a credible record looks like
Request dated invoices, service-book entries and parts or inspection records. Each entry should make sense alongside the next: dates should move forward, mileages should not fall, and the work should fit the vehicle’s age and use. Call the issuing workshop using contact details you independently verify, where possible. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they remove evidence and justify a more comprehensive inspection and a lower risk-adjusted offer.
Compare mileage across the car
Compare the odometer with service invoices, tyre age and wear, seat and pedal wear, inspection reports and registration history. A mismatch is a reason to pause and investigate, not a basis for accusing the seller without evidence. If the mileage cannot be reconciled, value the car as an unknown-history vehicle or walk away.

Ford’s owner information directs owners to service according to the owner’s manual. The India-market EcoSport manual identifies the vehicle as “Ecosport (CBW) India.” Use the manual applicable to the exact car, because engine, transmission and year affect required work. A seller’s claim that a service was “recent” is not a substitute for a dated record.

Estimate repairs before you negotiate
Ask the mechanic for a current written estimate for this exact vehicle in Manesar or your chosen workshop. Separate immediate safety work from items that can be monitored and from optional cosmetic work. Include taxes, fluids, calibration, towing and the possibility of related parts when the mechanic explains that a diagnosis is not yet conclusive.
Ford India’s Happy Pocket Service page lists Rs 2,453 as a starting price for the described routine service, with the figure marked indicative as of May 2024. It also states that displayed prices vary across India and may change without notice. This is historical scheduled-service context, not a current Manesar quote, a repair estimate or a guarantee that your EcoSport will cost that amount.
The same page states a general service-schedule frequency of 10,000km or 12 months. Apply the interval to the exact vehicle’s owner’s manual and actual service requirements; it does not prove that a previous owner followed it. A car overdue by time, mileage or both should be priced with the outstanding maintenance included.
