The safest way to buy a used electric car in Germany is to verify five things before you negotiate: its real-world range on your routes, AC and DC charging capability, independently documented battery State of Health (SoH), the exact battery warranty and service history, and the legal position of the seller. Then inspect and drive the car like any used vehicle, record every included cable and promised condition in the contract, and check whether you are buying from a dealer or a private individual.

A dashboard range estimate or a single SoH percentage cannot establish the whole car’s condition. Battery-test method, temperature, mileage, warranty wording, accident history and your charging access all affect whether a particular vehicle is a sensible purchase.

Start with your routes, not the advertised range

Write down the journeys you actually make before comparing cars. Include the normal daily distance, motorway trips, regular passengers and luggage, winter temperatures, and how often you can charge at home, work or in public. Andreas Müller, head of the Traffic and Technology department at ADAC Südbaden, put the order plainly: “Um das passende Elektroauto zu finden, sollten zuerst die persönlichen Anforderungen an das Wunschfahrzeug wie Platzverhältnisse, Ausstattung und Ähnliches klar sein,” (English translation: “To find the right electric car, you should first clarify your personal requirements for the desired vehicle, such as space, equipment and similar factors.”), ADAC Südbaden, 3 May 2021.

Convert claimed range into a usable reserve

Official range is not a promise of the distance you will cover. Usable battery capacity and consumption are the main variables; driving style, speed, outside temperature, heating and air conditioning can materially change consumption. Compare independent test results for the exact model and battery version when available, then keep a reserve for weather, traffic and detours. A car that barely covers a normal route on a mild day is a poor match even if its laboratory figure looks attractive.

  • Decide the minimum reserve you want when arriving at a charger.
  • Check whether winter motorway driving still leaves that reserve.
  • Confirm that the boot, seats, towing equipment and other practical requirements fit your use.

Check charging at the places you control

Overnight AC charging at home or work may be all you need for a short daily commute. Regular long-distance driving makes DC fast-charging power, charging-curve behaviour and the availability of compatible stations more important. Connector type alone does not determine speed: the vehicle’s onboard AC charger, the station and the cable all matter.

Use pattern What to verify Why it matters
Home or workplace charging AC connector, onboard AC capacity, wallbox or socket capability, cable included A car limited to a lower AC rate may still be fine overnight, but it will take longer to replenish.
Frequent motorway trips DC connector, maximum DC power, charging-curve evidence and compatible networks on your routes Peak kW is not the same as sustained charging speed; a short stop may not add the range you expect.
Mostly public AC charging Type 2 compatibility, cable length and condition, public-station access Many European AC points use Type 2; a missing or damaged cable can create an immediate cost and inspection problem.
Older imported vehicle Whether the inlet is Type 1, an adapter requirement, and the adapter’s rating and condition Older cars may use Type 1 rather than the European Type 2 standard.

Ask the seller to identify the exact inlet, onboard AC rating and DC capability from the vehicle documents or manufacturer specification for that VIN, not from a generic listing. Test the charging equipment where possible and photograph the labels on every supplied cable.

Get battery-health evidence and understand what it means

The battery is the most consequential electric-car-specific component, so ask for a recent certificate reporting State of Health. ADAC describes two broad approaches: a short diagnostic-interface readout and a longer measurement during everyday driving. They are different evidence types. Request the test date, mileage, temperature or operating conditions, the measured value, the method and the organisation that performed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why one SoH percentage is not self-explanatory

State of Health is normally expressed as remaining usable capacity compared with a reference capacity, but manufacturers and test providers do not necessarily calculate it in the same way. TÜV-Verband has warned that manufacturer battery-management readings have had limited transparency, comparability and reliability across methods. A result of 90% from one method cannot automatically be ranked against 90% from another vehicle or provider.

Use the report as one piece of evidence. Check whether it is a quick electronic estimate or a fuller charge-and-discharge assessment, whether the battery was warm or cold, and whether the report identifies the usable-capacity baseline. If the seller supplies only a screenshot with no method or date, ask for a documented test or price the uncertainty into your decision.

ADAC reference values by mileage

ADAC experts give the following reference values from their evaluations and experience. They are not a statutory threshold, a manufacturer guarantee or an automatic rejection rule.

Odometer reading ADAC expert reference for remaining capacity How to use it
50,000 km At least 92% A lower result warrants an explanation, warranty check and vehicle-specific price assessment.
100,000 km At least 88% Compare the method and battery history before treating the difference as abnormal.
150,000 km At least 84% Confirm remaining warranty, expected range and likely replacement cost exposure.
200,000 km At least 80% Assess the car on its actual usable range and documented condition, not the percentage alone.

A result below a reference does not prove that the car is unusable. It does mean you should obtain an explanation, verify warranty eligibility, compare the resulting range with your routes and negotiate on documented risk rather than on an unverified assumption.

Arrange a suitable battery check

  1. Ask what test is available. Request the provider’s description of the measurement, not merely the headline percentage.
  2. Check recency. Match the report to the current VIN, mileage and battery; an old report may not describe the car you are buying.
  3. Compare like with like. Use the same method when comparing shortlisted vehicles where possible.
  4. Keep the report. Attach it to your purchase file and record any seller statement about the battery in the contract.
  5. Use an independent service if the evidence is weak. ADAC describes a partner quick-check in Frankfurt that takes about 20 minutes and cost €79 including a digital certificate at the time of its 2026 article. Location, price and availability can change, so confirm current details directly before booking.

Verify the battery warranty by VIN

ADAC says many manufacturers offer battery cover for around eight years or 160,000 km and often use a capacity threshold near 70%. This is only a broad description. Older ADAC guidance cited a wider mileage range of 100,000 to 200,000 km. The warranty booklet and VIN-specific terms control the actual vehicle.

Record these terms

  • Warranty start date and first-registration date.
  • Distance limit and whether time or mileage expires first.
  • The stated capacity threshold and how capacity is measured.
  • Exclusions for accident damage, misuse, modifications, charging behaviour or non-approved repairs.
  • Required servicing, software updates or inspection records.
  • Whether the warranty transfers to a subsequent owner and what paperwork is required.
  • The claim process, authorised repair locations and any regional restrictions.

TÜV NORD likewise advises checking remaining battery warranty and transferability. Do not accept “battery guaranteed” in an advert as a substitute for the warranty document. Ask the manufacturer or authorised service channel to confirm coverage for the VIN where the seller’s paperwork is unclear.

Inspect charging hardware and included equipment

List every item included in the sale: AC cable, any portable charging cable, DC-access accessories, adapters, luggage equipment, emergency kit and both keys. Note the make, rating, visible damage and whether the item works. Confirm that the cable matches the car’s inlet and the charging points you plan to use.

ADAC notes that a missing or defective charging cable is a significant HU issue and can prevent the inspection sticker. Even when it does not block the sale, replacing a high-current cable or a proprietary adapter can be expensive. Put the exact cable type and condition in the contract instead of relying on a verbal promise.

Check the ordinary used-car fundamentals

An electric drivetrain does not remove normal vehicle risks. Inspect the car in daylight, preferably when it is dry and has not just been washed to hide repairs. Take a second person or arrange an independent inspection if you cannot assess structural damage yourself.

Body, structure and accident evidence

  • Compare paint colour, panel gaps, fasteners and glass dates on opposite sides.
  • Look for overspray, uneven seams, repaired sills, underbody damage and corrosion.
  • Inspect jacking points, battery casing and undertrays for impact marks; do not remove covers yourself unless qualified.
  • Ask for invoices, photographs and insurance or repair records for every reported accident.
  • Check that safety systems, warning lights, cameras and sensors operate after repairs.

Tyres, brakes and suspension

  • Measure tread and look for uneven wear that can indicate alignment or suspension problems.
  • Check tyre age, load rating and speed rating against the vehicle requirement.
  • During the drive, listen for knocks, feel for steering pull and test braking on a safe, dry road.
  • Look for corrosion on brake discs. Regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake use, so a car that feels fine at low speed may still need brake attention.

Interior, electronics and climate systems

  • Test every display, switch, seat, window, lock, camera, parking sensor and driver-assistance function.
  • Confirm that no battery, charging, drivetrain or high-voltage warning remains after startup.
  • Run heating and air conditioning; their energy use affects winter range and repairs can be costly.
  • Check for water ingress, damp carpets, unusual smells and evidence of an aftermarket electrical installation.
  • Verify both keys, the charging-card or app handover process and removal of the previous owner’s accounts.

Documents and inspection status

Read the service book and invoices, not just the seller’s summary. Confirm software campaigns, recalls, high-voltage work, 12-volt battery replacement and any scheduled maintenance. Check the HU (Hauptuntersuchung) date and obtain the inspection report where possible. HU status is useful evidence of roadworthiness at the inspection date, not a guarantee that every defect is absent on the day you buy.

Use the test drive to collect evidence

Arrange enough time to drive in urban traffic and at higher speed. Start with the battery state and outside temperature written down, then record the displayed consumption, estimated range and any warnings. The objective is not to reproduce a laboratory test but to find inconsistencies and confirm that the vehicle suits your routes.

  1. Start the car from cold and check warning messages, charging status and key recognition.
  2. Test smooth acceleration, lift-off regeneration and friction braking at several speeds.
  3. Drive over representative bumps and listen for suspension, tyre or underbody noises.
  4. Use heating or air conditioning and observe whether the system works normally.
  5. Try all available drive modes and driver-assistance features without becoming distracted.
  6. If permitted, connect to a compatible AC or DC point and confirm that charging begins, the connector locks and the displayed power is plausible.
  7. After the drive, inspect for new warning messages, fluid leaks, hot smells or abnormal battery-temperature indications.

A short drive cannot certify the battery. Combine what you feel with the SoH evidence, warranty terms and service history.

Seller General position for a used-car buyer in Germany What to do
Commercial dealer selling to a consumer Statutory defect liability (Gewährleistung) cannot simply be excluded. For used goods, the period may be shortened to one year. Read the exact clause, identify the dealer and record all promised condition statements.
Private individual A private seller can generally exclude statutory defect liability, subject to exceptions such as fraudulently concealing a known defect or making a binding guarantee. Demand written answers about accidents, battery condition and known faults; do not rely on an informal assurance.

Verbraucherzentrale also explains that, for relevant consumer purchases, a defect appearing within the first 12 months is presumed to have existed at delivery unless the seller rebuts that presumption. This rule concerns statutory defect liability. A voluntary manufacturer or dealer warranty (Garantie) is separate, has its own terms and does not replace checking the seller’s legal obligations.

Do not sign a contract that says “sold as seen” while leaving important promises outside the document. Add the VIN, mileage, HU date, battery report reference, known damage, accident statement, included cables and any agreed repair or warranty commitment. Keep the advert, messages, report and signed contract together.

Compare shortlisted cars on the same evidence

When two vehicles appear similar, score them against the same facts rather than choosing on age or advertised range alone.

Comparison point Evidence to record Decision question
Realistic range Exact battery version, test results, consumption and your seasonal reserve Does it complete your regular routes without stressful charging stops?
AC charging Inlet type, onboard kW, cable and home/work setup Can it recover the required energy during your available parking time?
DC charging Connector, maximum and sustained power, route-station compatibility Will motorway stops be acceptable for your travel pattern?
Battery SoH Percentage, method, date, mileage and provider Is the result credible and consistent with the price and warranty?
Warranty Remaining time, mileage, threshold, exclusions and transferability Who carries the risk if capacity or a high-voltage component fails?
History and condition Service, accident, repair, HU and inspection evidence Are there unresolved mechanical, structural or electronic risks?
Equipment Cables, adapters, keys and accessories with condition noted What must you replace immediately after purchase?
Total price Asking price plus inspection, tyres, cable, service and repair contingencies Is the discount large enough for documented uncertainty?

Price context: avoid using depreciation as a prediction

ADAC reported that more than 50% depreciation in the first three years has been observed for newly registered electric cars in DAT market-observer data. That is a broad market statement, not a forecast for an individual model. Battery size, demand, incentives, software support, mileage, warranty and condition can produce very different results. Around 4% of Germany’s vehicle stock were BEVs according to ADAC’s 2026 context figure; that describes market penetration, not the quality or value of a particular used car.

Use current comparable listings and documented condition when negotiating. A lower price does not compensate for a battery report that cannot be interpreted, an unclear seller, missing cables or an expired warranty unless you have budgeted for those risks.

A practical purchase sequence

  1. Define the requirement. Write down routes, annual mileage, winter use, passengers, luggage, towing needs and charging locations.
  2. Filter candidates. Confirm the exact battery, connector, AC/DC capability and equipment rather than relying on the model name.
  3. Request documents before travelling. Ask for VIN, service records, HU information, accident history, battery warranty terms and a recent SoH report.
  4. Validate the battery evidence. Establish the test method and arrange an independent check if the report is missing, old or unexplained.
  5. Inspect and test-drive. Check structure, tyres, brakes, electronics, climate control, charging and warning messages.
  6. Confirm the seller. Decide whether the contract is with a dealer or private person and read the liability clause.
  7. Negotiate from written facts. Price in missing equipment, repairs, weak SoH evidence and remaining warranty.
  8. Write the final condition into the contract. Include VIN, mileage, damage, battery statements, included cables, HU status and agreed remedies.
  9. Collect everything at handover. Take both keys, cables, adapters, manuals, service invoices, certificates and account-transfer information, then photograph the car and equipment.

Red flags that should pause the purchase

  • The seller will not provide the VIN or refuses an independent inspection.
  • The SoH number has no method, date or vehicle identification.
  • The displayed range is treated as proof of battery capacity without route or temperature context.
  • Accident repairs, warning lights or high-voltage work are described only verbally.
  • The contract names a different seller from the person taking payment.
  • A dealer attempts to exclude all statutory defect liability on a consumer used-car sale.
  • The battery warranty is advertised but the booklet, threshold or transfer rules are unavailable.
  • Charging cables, adapters or keys are missing and their replacement cost is not reflected in the price.
  • The car passes a short drive but the seller will not allow charging, a longer drive or a documented inspection.

Final decision rule

Buy only when the car’s usable range and charging setup fit your real routes, the battery report is understandable, the remaining warranty and service history are documented, and ordinary inspection and test-drive findings are satisfactory. If one of those areas remains uncertain, treat the uncertainty as a cost and a legal risk—not as reassurance from a low odometer reading or a polished advert.
