The safest sequence is: identify the car, document its history, obtain the VIN-specific maintenance and recall information, inspect it on a lift, scan it with appropriate equipment, road-test it thoroughly, and then decide whether the findings justify the price.

1. Confirm the car’s identity before judging its condition
Start with the 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). Read it from the vehicle and compare it with the title, registration, sales contract, service invoices, inspection reports, and any history report. A mismatch can indicate paperwork error, an incorrectly advertised vehicle, or a much more serious identity problem. Stop the transaction until the discrepancy is explained and corrected.

Record the details that determine the right inspection
Write down the VIN, model year, A8 body style, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, mileage, market or country of sale, and the equipment actually installed. “A8” is not one uniform specification: an A8, A8 L, S8, W12, or A8 L TDI may have different powertrains, suspension systems, brakes, electronics, and service requirements. Use those details when requesting maintenance information and when booking an inspection.

Reconcile mileage across independent records
Ask for every available service invoice, inspection sheet, registration record, emissions document, tire invoice, and repair order. Put the dates and odometer readings in a simple timeline. The mileage should rise in a plausible way; a sudden decrease, long unexplained gap, or invoice that shows more miles than the current odometer requires an explanation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises comparing the odometer with maintenance and inspection records and using the VIN to obtain a vehicle-history report if the seller does not provide one.

A history report is useful evidence, not a substitute for original records or a physical inspection. It may not contain every accident, repair, or service event.
2. Check recalls and campaigns by VIN
Run the exact VIN through Audi’s recall and campaign lookup and through NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup. Do not rely on a search for “Audi A8 recalls” or on the seller’s statement that the model has no known issues; recall status is specific to the individual vehicle and can change as campaigns are issued or completed.

What to do when a recall is open
- Ask the seller for the dealer repair order showing completion, including the campaign number and date.
- If there is no completion record, call an Audi dealer with the VIN and confirm whether the campaign remains open.
- Arrange the repair before purchase or make the sale conditional on written completion.
- Keep the repair order with the vehicle records.
NHTSA says safety-recall repairs are free at the automaker’s local dealership. Confirm the campaign’s current status for the specific VIN rather than assuming an older report is still accurate.
3. Match maintenance to the correct A8 schedule
Obtain the maintenance information for the VIN, or select the correct model year, model, and trim in Audi’s owner-service resources. Audi presents mileage-based recommendations, and the schedule can differ by engine, transmission, drivetrain, market, and equipment. The owner’s manual and maintenance booklet for that vehicle are more reliable than a universal internet interval.

Build a due-versus-documented checklist
List the services due at the car’s current age and mileage, then mark each one as documented, partially documented, or unverified. Request invoices rather than accepting a stamped booklet alone when a major service is claimed. Look for dates, mileage, technician or dealer identity, parts and fluids, and a description of the work.

Unverified maintenance is not proof that a service was skipped, but it is a cost and risk you should account for. Do not treat a low-mileage A8 as maintenance-free: age, storage, short trips, and neglected fluids or rubber components can matter as much as odometer miles.
4. Commission an independent inspection with Audi experience
Pay for an inspection at a shop that works on Audi vehicles and is independent of the seller. A general safety check is not enough for an A8’s complex powertrain, electronics, air suspension, and aluminum structure. Give the technician the VIN, the seller’s records, and a written request for a pre-purchase inspection report.
Require a lift inspection
Ask the technician to inspect for fluid leaks, loose or damaged components, steering play, brake condition, hoses, tires, wheels, underbody damage, and alignment-related clues. The technician should note the severity and location of each finding, not merely write “check OK.” Look for evidence of impact, corrosion, fluid residue, bent components, non-factory fasteners, and mismatched parts.
Use Audi’s checklists as a scope, not a guarantee
Audi’s 2014 A8/A8 L/A8 W12/S8/A8 L TDI pre-delivery checklist calls for on-hoist inspection of leaks and loose parts, steering, brakes, hoses, tires, and wheels. It also includes a road test and a diagnostic fault-memory interrogation. The checklist specifically instructs technicians: “Check Adaptive air suspension in all positions” and “Interrogate fault memory using the VAS tester and print Diagnostic Log.” Those instructions are useful prompts, but they do not prove that every A8 generation has identical systems.

Audi’s 2020 A8 L/S8 pre-delivery procedure expands the equipment checks to body damage, lighting, trunk operation, power doors, windows, locks, seats, mirrors, MMI screens, HVAC, panoramic roof and sunshade, rear sunshades, parking brake, engine, transmission, fluid levels, adaptive air suspension when equipped, alignment, and fault-memory logging. Ask the inspector to apply the relevant checks to the actual car.
5. Inspect the powertrain and road-test every operating mode
Start the engine from cold if possible. A seller who warms the car before your arrival may be hiding a difficult start, smoke, noise, or warning message. Watch the instrument cluster during the self-test and note any warning that remains illuminated after the engine starts. Do not accept “it just needs a reset” without a written diagnosis.
Engine checks
- Listen for abnormal rattles, knocks, ticking, belt noise, or uneven idle.
- Check for smoke at startup, during acceleration, and after an extended idle.
- Look for oil, coolant, fuel, or hydraulic-fluid leaks above and below the engine.
- Confirm that the temperature reaches and holds normal operating range during the drive.
- Test acceleration progressively and under load; hesitation, misfire, surging, or reduced-power messages require diagnosis.
Transmission and driveline checks
- With the brakes applied, select each gear and note excessive delay, harsh engagement, or clunks.
- During gentle and firm acceleration, check for flare, slipping, jolts, or gear hunting.
- Test reverse, low-speed maneuvering, and stop-and-go traffic.
- Listen for vibration or humming that changes with speed or throttle.
A road test should be long enough to bring the car to operating temperature and exercise city, highway, braking, turning, and parking conditions. The inspector should record symptoms and fault codes rather than clearing them and declaring the car fixed.
6. Treat adaptive air suspension as a major inspection item
If the A8 is equipped with adaptive air suspension, test every available height and drive mode. Audi’s 2014 checklist explicitly requires checking the adaptive air suspension in all positions; the 2020 procedure also includes it when fitted.
What to observe
- The vehicle should rise and lower evenly, without one corner lagging or remaining high.
- After the car is parked, compare its height at each corner and look for overnight sag if the seller permits a second visit.
- Listen for an air compressor that runs excessively or repeatedly.
- During the drive, note bouncing, harsh impacts, wandering, nose-diving under braking, or a suspension warning.
- Inspect air lines, struts, sensors, and related components for damage or leaks on the lift.
Do not infer suspension condition from a single stationary demonstration. A system can change height yet still have a leak, worn component, calibration problem, or fault stored in a control module.

7. Scan the car correctly—and know what a basic scanner cannot do
Request a full diagnostic scan and a printed report. Audi’s factory checklists specify VAS diagnostic procedures and a printed diagnostic log. Ask the shop what equipment and software it will use for the specific model year and which control modules it can access.
A generic consumer OBD-II reader may provide a preliminary emissions-code check, but it may not communicate with every A8 control module or interpret manufacturer-specific faults. It cannot replace a specialist inspection, a road test, or a review of live data and stored history. If you buy an OBD-II scan tool for an initial check, verify its compatibility with the exact A8 before relying on its results.
Interpret scan results with the records
- Active faults need diagnosis before purchase, even if the car drives normally.
- Pending or intermittent faults may point to a developing problem.
- Recently cleared memory can leave monitors incomplete or erase useful context.
- Communication faults across several modules may indicate voltage, wiring, water intrusion, or control-unit problems.
- A “no codes” result does not certify mechanical condition.
8. Test every piece of equipment actually fitted
Do not assume an option is present because a generic model listing says it should be. Confirm equipment from the VIN build information, the window sticker or original order where available, and the physical car. Then operate each feature rather than accepting the seller’s explanation that it is “rarely used.”

Test the equipment with the engine running and, where practical, with the vehicle in the conditions in which the feature is designed to operate. Check both front and rear controls in an A8 L or other long-wheelbase configuration.
9. Examine crash repairs and the aluminum structure
Review every reported collision, not only events labeled “minor.” Obtain body-shop invoices, photographs, parts lists, alignment reports, and any structural measurement report. Inspect panel gaps, paint texture and color, overspray, fasteners, glass markings, sensors, radar units, cameras, and underbody components.

Audi’s certified-pre-owned warranty book identifies the A8 among vehicles with aluminum design or construction and states that Audi-specified procedures matter for aluminum body and space-frame repairs. Aluminum repair can require different methods, equipment, materials, and corrosion protection than ordinary steel-body work. Ask a shop qualified for Audi aluminum repair to review any structural or substantial panel repair.
A repaired car is not automatically a bad purchase. The decision depends on the location and severity of the damage, the quality of the repair, calibration of safety systems, corrosion protection, and documentation. Walk away when the seller cannot explain a structural repair or refuses an independent review.
10. Compare two used A8s by evidence, not reputation
There is no universal “best” A8 model year or reliability ranking established by the available official material. If you are choosing between cars, score the evidence for each one using the same criteria.

A lower-mileage car with missing records or unresolved faults may be a weaker purchase than a higher-mileage car with consistent service history and a clean inspection. Let documented condition, not trim prestige, determine the offer.
11. Use a practical inspection-day procedure
- Before meeting the seller: obtain the VIN, confirm the advertised mileage and equipment, and retrieve the matching Audi maintenance information.
- At the car: compare the VIN on the vehicle with every document, photograph the odometer and warning lights, and inspect the exterior in daylight.
- Before driving: start the engine cold if possible, test basic controls, and look for leaks, smoke, unusual noises, and warning messages.
- At the independent shop: request the lift inspection, suspension checks, road test, diagnostic scan, and written report.
- After the inspection: obtain explanations and repair estimates for every significant finding; do not let the seller or shop erase codes before documenting them.
- Before signing: verify recall status again, confirm that promised repairs appear on an invoice, and make the contract reflect any conditions of sale.
12. Know when to postpone or reject the purchase
- The VIN on the vehicle and paperwork does not match.
- The mileage cannot be reconciled with dated records.
- The seller refuses an independent inspection or a cold start.
- An open recall has no plan for completion.
- Structural aluminum repairs are undocumented or the shop cannot verify the method used.
- The A8 has active warning messages, severe leaks, unstable ride height, transmission symptoms, or widespread communication faults.
- Important equipment does not work and the seller will not provide a written repair commitment.
Audi says its certified-pre-owned inspection covers more than 125 components as of 2026. That figure describes Audi’s CPO program scope, not every independent inspection and not a guarantee for a privately sold used A8. An independent inspection remains necessary when the car is outside that program.
