Before buying a used Acura TSX Sport Wagon, verify the specific vehicle’s VIN for unrepaired recalls, confirm campaign and update records, listen for the steering-column clicking described in Acura Service Bulletin 12-037, and pay for an independent inspection. A model-year recall list cannot tell you whether the car in front of you is repaired.
Use the sequence below to separate documented safety work and identifiable service-bulletin symptoms from the ordinary condition checks required on any used car.

1. Run the exact VIN through recall databases before negotiating
Start with the 17-character VIN on the vehicle, title and seller’s paperwork. A year/make/model search gives general campaign information; a VIN or license-plate search is what identifies unrepaired recalls for that particular vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also notes that a manufacturer may have VIN information that has not yet appeared on its site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Read the VIN from the dashboard plate and the driver-door label, then compare both with the title, registration and seller’s advertisement.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup and in Acura’s owner recall or product-update resources.
- Save or print the result, including whether a remedy is available, completed or still outstanding.
- Ask an Acura dealer to verify the VIN if the online results conflict, are incomplete or show a campaign with no clear repair history.
- Request a repair order or invoice for every completed campaign. “No open recall” is not the same as proof that previous work was performed correctly.
Do not assume that every TSX Sport Wagon from a listed year has the same open campaign status. Ownership changes, prior dealer repairs and VIN exclusions can produce different results on otherwise identical cars. Ask the seller to run the lookup while you are present, or run it yourself before making an offer. A result showing no current remedy may mean the campaign is closed, the VIN is excluded, or the manufacturer’s system has information that has not yet synchronized with the public listing. That is why an Acura dealer confirmation and repair paperwork are useful when the status is unclear.

Takata passenger-airbag campaigns
NHTSA’s Takata recall spotlight includes 2009–2014 Acura TSX models, but the listing itself does not establish whether a particular VIN is affected. A Honda filing for recall 18V-661 identifies TSX Wagon model years 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 in the affected populations. The documented remedy was replacement of the passenger frontal-airbag inflator by a Honda or Acura dealer at no charge.
Treat that filing as historical campaign documentation, not as proof that a car currently needs or has received the repair. Obtain VIN-specific status and written evidence. If the inflator campaign remains open, arrange the dealer repair before carrying passengers and account for the time required to complete it when deciding whether to buy. Ask whether the repair order identifies the passenger inflator specifically, rather than accepting a generic statement that “the airbags were done.” Keep the dealer’s confirmation with the title and purchase agreement.
The 2011 compass software update
Acura’s Fall 2011 owner letter describes an update for 2011 TSX Sport Wagons whose compass software could display the wrong direction. An Acura dealer was to install the software free of charge. During your inspection, check the compass against a known direction and ask for the campaign documentation or dealer confirmation. A working display today does not prove that the update was performed, so retain the VIN verification or repair record with the purchase documents.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is a year-specific software update, not a reason to assume that every electrical feature on a 2011 wagon is defective. If the compass is inaccurate, intermittent or absent, record the symptom and ask the dealer whether the update was completed for that VIN. Include any promised software work in writing before final payment.
2. Ask for a complete paper trail
Records are more useful than a seller’s verbal assurance because they show what was actually serviced, when and at what mileage. Ask to see the following before leaving a deposit:
- Maintenance invoices with dates, mileage and the servicing business.
- Ownership history and the current title, including any branded, rebuilt, flood or salvage designation.
- Registration or inspection documents that let you compare recorded mileages.
- Recall, airbag-inflator and compass-update repair orders.
- Records of major collision, paint or structural work.
- Two keys, security-code information and manuals, if available.
Compare the odometer with every dated invoice, tire receipt and inspection entry. Large unexplained gaps, mileage that moves backward or a VIN mismatch between any document and the car are reasons to pause until the discrepancy is resolved. A clean-looking title does not replace a mechanical inspection, and a thick folder does not prove that safety campaigns were completed.

Ask who performed routine work and what parts or fluids were used when the invoice identifies them. You do not need to reject a car because an independent shop handled maintenance, but you should be able to tell which work was done and at what interval. Missing records are uncertainty, not proof of neglect; price that uncertainty into the inspection and repair decision rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
Use the correct service reference
Acura’s authorized manual catalog lists publication 61TL204, “2011-2013 Acura TSX L4 Sedan/Sport Wagon Service Manual.” Match the manual to the wagon’s model year and engine before using specifications or procedures. It is a model-specific reference for a technician, not a substitute for diagnosis or a promise that a component is in good condition.
Acura’s owner resources provide manuals and guides and direct owners to recall and product-update checks. Use those resources to confirm the vehicle’s exact application, but do not treat a generic online procedure as permission to perform a safety-system repair yourself.
3. Test-drive the steering condition covered by Acura bulletin 12-037
Acura Service Bulletin 12-037, dated February 26, 2013, applies to all 2011–2012 TSX Sport Wagons and a limited, specified VIN range of 2013 wagons. It describes a clicking noise from the upper steering-column cover when the steering wheel is turned. Acura attributes the condition to a steering-angle-sensor cancel-cam spring that can intermittently bind and specifies replacement of the steering-angle-sensor assembly.
The bulletin documents an applicable condition; it does not establish how common the noise is or mean that every wagon has a defective sensor. Listen for it deliberately:
- With the car stationary, start the engine and turn the wheel gently left and right through small angles.
- Repeat at walking speed in an empty area, making smooth turns rather than abrupt steering inputs.
- Note whether the click comes from the upper column, whether it occurs in one direction or both, and whether it repeats.
- Record the model year and VIN. A 2013 car must fall within the bulletin’s specified VIN range for the document to apply.
- If you hear the symptom, have a qualified technician diagnose it before purchase. Acura states that the bulletin procedure is for skilled technicians and should not be attempted as a do-it-yourself repair.
Do not accept a seller’s guess that the sound is “normal” or simply spray lubricant into the column. Obtain a written diagnosis and repair estimate, then decide whether the price reflects the confirmed condition. A different noise, such as a suspension knock or tire scrub, should not automatically be labeled the bulletin condition; location, repeatability and technician diagnosis matter.

4. Complete the ordinary used-car inspection
The following checks are prudent for any used vehicle. They are not claims of TSX-specific defect patterns; they are ways to find condition problems that affect safety, reliability and the cost of ownership.
Cold start and engine bay
- Arrange to see the car with the engine cold. A seller who warms it before arrival may be hiding hard starting, smoke or noises.
- Check that the engine starts promptly, settles into a stable idle and produces no persistent warning lights.
- Look for fresh oil, coolant or other fluid leaks around the engine, transmission, radiator, hoses and beneath the vehicle.
- Inspect fluid levels and appearance, but do not treat clean fluid as proof of complete maintenance.
- Listen for knocks, rattles, belt noise or exhaust leaks that change with engine speed.
Transmission, acceleration and controls
- From a stop, verify smooth engagement of drive and reverse without a long delay, harsh bang or unexplained shudder.
- Accelerate gently and firmly at several speeds. The engine should respond consistently without surging, slipping or an illuminated malfunction light.
- Check manual controls, if equipped, for clean clutch engagement and gears that do not grind or resist selection.
- Confirm that cruise control, steering-wheel buttons, audio, navigation, cameras and other installed equipment operate as expected.
Brakes, steering and suspension
- Brake from low and moderate speeds in a safe area. The pedal should remain firm, the car should track straight and the wheel should not shake.
- Drive over controlled bumps and listen for clunks or knocks. Compare left and right ride height and look for leaking dampers or damaged springs.
- Check that the steering returns toward center and does not pull, wander or feel notchy. This general check is separate from the specific clicking symptom in bulletin 12-037.
- Inspect tires for even tread, matching sizes and date codes. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or accident-related problems.
Body, chassis and underbody
- View each panel in consistent light. Differences in paint texture, overspray, uneven gaps or fasteners with tool marks can indicate repairs.
- Inspect door, hood and tailgate operation, seals, glass and lighting.
- Use a lift during the professional inspection to look for structural repairs, bent members, fluid leaks, damaged exhaust components and corrosion.
- Pay particular attention to corrosion in regions that use road salt. Surface rust and structural perforation have very different repair implications.
Climate, safety and electrical equipment
- Run the heater and air conditioner through all fan speeds and temperature settings.
- Test windows, locks, mirrors, seat adjustments, wipers, washer jets, defrosters and interior lights.
- Confirm that the airbag, ABS and other warning lamps illuminate during the self-check and then go out. A lamp that never illuminates may have been disabled.
- Check the compass on a 2011 wagon and verify its direction against a known heading, while still requesting update documentation.
5. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection
Use a mechanic who is independent of the seller and, ideally, has access to a lift and a scan tool. The inspection should occur before money becomes non-refundable. Give the technician the VIN, your intended use and any symptoms you noticed, including a steering click.
Ask for a written report that separates safety defects, items needing attention soon, routine maintenance and cosmetic observations. Useful inspection elements include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Diagnostic scan for stored and pending powertrain, brake, airbag and body-control codes.
- Fluid leaks, cooling-system condition, belts, hoses, battery and charging output.
- Transmission operation and evidence of overheating or contamination.
- Brake-pad thickness, rotor condition, parking-brake operation and brake-fluid condition.
- Tire condition, wheel damage, alignment clues, steering and suspension components.
- Lift inspection for corrosion, impact damage, loose hardware and exhaust or underbody leaks.
- Evidence of collision repair, water intrusion or altered identification labels.
- Verification that the odometer reading is plausible against the records supplied.
Give the inspector the seller’s claimed recent work and ask the mechanic to verify, where possible, that the condition matches those claims. Request photographs or measurements for significant findings so you can discuss them with the seller without relying on memory. If a warning lamp is on, ask whether the code is current, pending or recently cleared; a cleared code is not the same as a completed repair.
A pre-purchase inspection cannot certify future reliability. Its value is that it exposes present defects and gives you a documented estimate of repairs before you commit.
6. Compare several wagons by evidence, not by model year
If you have more than one TSX Sport Wagon to choose from, score the cars on the same evidence. No official material establishes a model-wide reliability ranking or a price ranking that can select a winner automatically.

| Comparison area | What to verify | How it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| VIN-specific campaigns | Open and completed recall results from NHTSA and Acura, including airbag work | An unresolved safety campaign requires a repair plan before purchase. |
| Maintenance and ownership | Invoices, title status, ownership continuity and mileage consistency | Complete, coherent records reduce uncertainty; unexplained gaps require investigation. |
| Independent inspection | Written findings, diagnostic codes and estimated repair costs | Use documented safety and mechanical needs rather than appearance to set an offer. |
| Test-drive behavior | Steering-column click, starting, shifting, braking, pulling and suspension noises | Repeatable symptoms deserve diagnosis before a deposit or final price. |
| Condition versus asking price | Immediate repairs, deferred maintenance and cosmetic work | Compare total near-term cost, not just the advertised price. |
| Equipment operation | Climate control, electronics, compass and safety-warning-lamp behavior | Nonworking features are repair items and may signal broader neglect. |
Compare inspection findings on the same basis. One wagon may have a higher asking price but fewer immediate repairs, while another may look cheaper yet require safety work, tires or diagnosis. The evidence does not establish that one model year is automatically the better buy, so choose the vehicle with the clearest history and the smallest documented repair burden for your use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →7. Decide when to walk away, renegotiate or proceed
Walk away until the facts are corrected
- The VIN on the vehicle does not match the title or seller’s records.
- The seller refuses a VIN lookup, independent inspection or reasonable test drive.
- The title is branded or the car shows structural, flood or severe corrosion damage that the seller cannot document.
- Safety warning lamps, airbag concerns or unresolved recall work have no credible repair plan.
- Odometer records conflict and the seller cannot explain the discrepancy.
Renegotiate with written evidence
A documented repair need, including a diagnosed steering-column condition, can be priced using the technician’s estimate. Keep safety campaigns separate from ordinary maintenance: a free dealer recall remedy should not be treated as a cash repair allowance, while unrelated mechanical work may be a genuine cost. Put any agreement about repairs, parts or delivery date in writing.
If the seller promises to complete a repair, specify who will perform it, what the repair order must show and when you will recheck the vehicle. Do not release final payment merely because the seller says the work is scheduled. For an unresolved campaign, confirm directly with the Acura dealer that parts and appointment availability support the proposed plan.
Proceed when the evidence is coherent
A sensible purchase candidate has a VIN that matches every document, no unresolved safety campaign that you are unwilling to manage, records that support the mileage, a satisfactory independent inspection and a test drive without unexplained symptoms. Confirm that all promised repairs are completed and obtain the invoices before final payment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a model-year recall search enough for a used Acura TSX Sport Wagon?
No. A year/make/model search is general information. Run the vehicle’s VIN through NHTSA and Acura, then ask for dealer repair records because VIN-specific status can differ between otherwise identical wagons.

What does clicking from the steering column mean?
Acura Service Bulletin 12-037 describes clicking from the upper steering-column cover while turning the wheel on all 2011–2012 Sport Wagons and a limited VIN range of 2013 wagons. A technician should diagnose the sound; the bulletin is not proof that every wagon has the condition.
What should I check on a 2011 TSX Sport Wagon’s compass?
Verify the displayed direction against a known heading and ask for documentation of Acura’s Fall 2011 compass software update. The update was intended to correct software that could display the wrong direction and was to be performed by an Acura dealer at no charge.
Can I repair the bulletin 12-037 steering issue myself?
Acura says the bulletin procedure is for skilled technicians. Do not attempt the steering-angle-sensor replacement as a do-it-yourself repair; obtain a qualified diagnosis and written estimate instead.

The Bottom Line
Buy the individual Acura TSX Sport Wagon with the strongest evidence, not simply the newest model year. Verify the VIN with NHTSA and Acura, document Takata and other campaign repairs, check the 2011 compass update when applicable, test for the bulletin 12-037 steering click, review coherent records and pay for an independent inspection. If the VIN, title, mileage, safety status and inspection findings do not agree, pause or walk away until they do.
