The XC90 is a separate, large SUV offered with a plug-in-hybrid or gasoline mild-hybrid powertrain. Before you sign, establish whether a fully electric vehicle fits your home charging, daily mileage and road-trip routes; then verify the exact EX90 configuration, price, range estimate, seating, cargo needs, warranty and VIN-specific recall status.
The most important checks are practical rather than cosmetic: get an itemized out-the-door quote, confirm the wheel-specific range for the vehicle on the lot, test the actual second- and third-row arrangement with your passengers or child seats, and use the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check open recalls. The figures below are U.S.-market information and can change with model year, inventory, software and retailer policy.

Identify which Volvo SUV you are actually buying
EX90: the fully electric flagship-size model
Volvo describes the EX90 as its only large fully electric SUV in the company’s range. It is powered solely by a high-voltage battery and electric motors, so every mile depends on access to charging and on how weather, speed, load and temperature affect energy use.
XC90: a different powertrain decision
Volvo positions the XC90 separately from the EX90. The XC90 is available as a plug-in hybrid or a gasoline mild hybrid, not as the same fully electric configuration as the EX90. A plug-in hybrid can run electrically for part of a trip and use an engine when its battery is depleted; a mild hybrid still relies on its gasoline engine. Compare the vehicles as different ownership models rather than assuming that an XC90 is simply an EX90 with a smaller battery.

Ask the retailer to write the model year, model name, motor configuration, drivetrain, seating layout and wheel size on the quote. “Flagship SUV” is not enough to identify the vehicle, and inventory can contain more than one model year.
Check the exact price, trim and equipment
Published 2026 EX90 starting prices
Volvo Car USA’s 2026 model page lists these starting MSRPs:

These are starting prices, not transaction prices. The retailer sets the actual selling price, and the final amount changes with motor, wheels, seating, options, taxes, government charges, financing and any incentive. Volvo’s listed offers are time-limited and eligibility-dependent; verify them when you buy instead of assuming that an advertised offer applies to your vehicle.
Request an itemized, out-the-door quote
Have the retailer identify every element of the vehicle and deal in writing:
- Model year and VIN, matched to the vehicle you will receive.
- Plus or Ultra trim, motor and drivetrain, including whether the vehicle is Single Motor, Twin Motor or Twin Motor Performance.
- Wheel diameter and tire specification, because the published range changes with wheel choice.
- Six- or seven-seat interior, upholstery and every factory-installed option.
- Destination charge, documentation or dealer fees, taxes, title, registration and any accessories.
- Financing, lease terms, incentives and eligibility conditions shown separately from the vehicle price.
Compare quotes only when the configurations are identical. A lower headline number can reflect a different motor, wheel, seating or equipment package.
Choose motor, drivetrain, wheels and seating together
Single Motor versus AWD Twin Motor
The Single Motor version sends power through one motor and is listed with seven seats. Twin Motor versions add all-wheel drive; the Twin Motor Performance designation is a separate configuration. Volvo’s published performance figures for the EX90 are described as preliminary, so treat them as specifications to confirm for the exact vehicle rather than guaranteed output.

Wheel size changes the official range
Volvo’s 2026 U.S. information gives a headline estimate of up to 293 miles for Single Motor and up to 305 miles for AWD versions equipped with 21-inch wheels. The same material’s wheel-specific footnote lists different estimates for other combinations:

Because the page also uses the broader “up to 293 miles” headline for Single Motor, ask the retailer to show the estimate for the VIN and wheel package on the window sticker or vehicle specification sheet. These are estimates, not a promise of miles in every trip. Volvo says real-world range varies with driving style, conditions, maintenance and battery factors.
Six seats or seven seats?
EX90 interiors can be configured with six or seven seats, while Volvo lists Single Motor with seven seats. The difference affects access to the third row, the number of individual second-row seats and the cargo area left when all seats are occupied. Do not infer the layout from exterior photos or a trim name; verify the seating diagram for the vehicle you are considering.
Make sure charging fits your life
Plan home and work charging before delivery
The EX90 is fully electric, so a realistic charging plan is a purchase requirement. Identify where the vehicle will normally charge, who controls that outlet or station, and whether the electrical installation can support the equipment you intend to use. If you rent, share a parking area or rely on workplace charging, obtain permission and confirm access hours before signing.
A home Level 2 installation can be useful, but the vehicle and electrical work must be matched to the installer’s requirements. Confirm the connector and hardware specified for the EX90, available circuit capacity, cable reach, outdoor protection and whether permits or load-management equipment are needed. Volvo’s published vehicle material does not endorse a particular third-party charger, so have the installer and retailer confirm compatibility for the exact car.

Check public charging on your ordinary routes
Volvo identifies DC fast charging as the quickest location type and describes U.S. charging access through ChargePoint and roaming partners. Before purchase, check the stations you would actually use: near home, work, school, shopping, airports and the roads used for long trips. Confirm that the sites accept the vehicle, are open at the times you travel and have enough stalls for your likely stops.

Do not treat a published ideal charging time as guaranteed. Volvo’s specifications caution that charging duration changes with outdoor and battery temperature, charging equipment and the condition of the vehicle and battery. A route that works in mild weather may require more time or an additional stop in heat, cold, heavy rain, strong wind or when carrying a full load.
Compare range with your own routes
Write down a typical weekday, a winter or summer trip and your longest regular journey. Add a reserve for detours, traffic and station availability. Then compare those distances with the wheel-specific estimate for the exact EX90, rather than with the maximum number in an advertisement. If you cannot routinely charge at home or work, evaluate the time and reliability of public charging as part of the vehicle’s everyday cost.
Test the family, cargo and towing setup
Bring the people and child seats that matter
Volvo lists a maximum cargo capacity of 85.3 cubic feet with the backrests folded and 2.5 cubic feet of underfloor storage. Those are maximum measurements; they do not show how much room remains behind an occupied third row or with a particular second-row arrangement.

Install the seats in the intended positions, check the angle of the second-row backs, climb into the third row and test whether adults can enter without moving the seats every time. Load the items with all intended passengers seated. Measure the lift-over height and check whether the underfloor compartment accepts the charging cables and emergency equipment you carry.
Confirm towing capacity for the motor you choose

Use the capacity for the actual motor configuration, not the highest number in the range. The trailer, passengers, cargo, tongue weight, hitch hardware and local rules still have to remain within the vehicle’s limits. Ask the retailer for the applicable towing equipment and weight-distribution guidance if you plan to tow regularly.
Evaluate the cabin technology and driver assistance
Test the connected features with your own phone
Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard, and Google built-in is available. Volvo includes Google services for four years; after that period, new terms and fees apply if the owner chooses to renew. Ask the retailer to explain which functions depend on the service subscription and what remains available without renewal.

During the demonstration, pair your phone, place a call, use navigation, adjust climate controls, check the camera views and try the physical controls while parked. Confirm that every intended driver can create or access the Volvo app account and that the vehicle can receive software updates. Note any delay, screen glare or menu depth that would make a daily task distracting.
Understand the limits of Pilot Assist and sensing systems
Volvo describes the EX90’s safety cage and sensing features as part of its equipment. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent crash-test results. Volvo’s support information also cautions drivers to assess whether conditions permit safe use of Pilot Assist. Treat driver assistance as a supervised aid: remain responsible for steering, speed, lane position and braking, and do not use it when weather, road markings, traffic or visibility make the conditions unsuitable.
No current U.S. independent crash rating for the 2026 model year was established in the available material. Check the current National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety records for the precise model year and test coverage instead of assuming that a rating from another year or vehicle applies.

Read the warranty booklet for the model year being delivered, not just a web summary. Have the retailer write down the in-service date and explain roadside assistance, corrosion, wear items, scheduled service and software-related support. U.S. terms do not automatically apply in another country.
Ask how service will work locally
Find the nearest authorized retailer, learn how appointments are scheduled and ask whether high-voltage work requires a particular facility. Clarify who handles software concerns, charging faults, tire replacement and towing after a warning message. Keep copies of the signed quote, warranty booklet, delivery inspection and every repair order.

Check the individual VIN for recalls
Use both manufacturer and government lookups
Before paying or taking delivery, obtain the 17-character VIN and make sure it matches the windshield, door label, purchase paperwork and insurance documents. Enter it in Volvo’s recall lookup; Volvo instructs owners to use the VIN to find out whether a vehicle should be brought to a retailer. Run the same VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup. Ask for written confirmation that every applicable remedy has been completed, or arrange the repair before delivery.

Understand what a recall report does and does not mean
NHTSA recall 25V654, submitted October 8, 2025, concerns certain 2025 EX90 vehicles. The report identifies 1,119 potentially involved vehicles and describes a power-operated tailgate drive-unit spindle nut that may detach. That population is not a defect rate for every EX90, and it does not establish that a particular vehicle is affected. Eligibility and completion are determined by the VIN and the manufacturer’s remedy records.
Ask about software and service campaigns too
Not every corrective action appears as a safety recall. Ask the retailer to search for open software updates, service campaigns and delivery holds tied to the VIN, and request documentation of the work. If a warning appears during the test drive, photograph the message and resolve it before accepting the vehicle.
Use this purchase-day sequence
- Inspect the vehicle and match its VIN to the quote, window sticker and paperwork.
- Run the VIN through Volvo’s recall lookup and NHTSA’s lookup; obtain proof of completed remedies.
- Verify model year, trim, motor, drivetrain, wheels, seating, options and destination charge on the itemized quote.
- Compare the exact vehicle’s range estimate with your commuting, seasonal and long-distance routes.
- Confirm home or work charging access and check public stations on regular journeys.
- Install your child seats and load representative luggage or equipment during the test drive.
- Test phone pairing, cameras, displays, driver-assistance controls and app setup while parked.
- Read the applicable warranty booklet, confirm the in-service date and record the local service contact.
- Review taxes, fees, incentives, financing and the final out-the-door total before signing.
Decide whether the EX90 or XC90 fits your use
Choose the EX90 when the charging plan is dependable
The EX90 makes the most sense when you can charge predictably at home, work or reliable public locations, and when your normal routes fit the vehicle’s configuration-specific range. It also offers the advantages of an electric drivetrain and the towing capacity, seating layout and cargo volume that match your needs.

The XC90’s plug-in-hybrid or mild-hybrid choices may better suit a household that cannot install charging, regularly travels beyond dependable charging coverage or wants an engine-supported long-distance routine. Compare the exact XC90 powertrain and equipment separately; its fuel use, electric operation and maintenance are not interchangeable with EX90 ownership.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Using the maximum range as a promise: check the wheel-specific estimate and leave a route reserve.
- Comparing sticker prices without configurations: align motor, wheels, seats, options, destination and fees.
- Assuming every six- or seven-seat SUV fits the same: bring passengers and child seats and test the actual layout.
- Relying on a retailer’s verbal recall answer: use the VIN and keep written repair confirmation.
- Treating driver assistance as autonomous driving: follow Volvo’s condition warnings and remain attentive.
- Assuming included connected services last forever: ask what changes after the four-year Google-services period.
- Transferring U.S. figures to another market: verify local prices, warranty, charging access and recall procedures.
The Bottom Line
Buy the 2026 EX90 only after the exact VIN, configuration, wheel-specific range, charging plan, passenger space, warranty terms and recall status all check out. If dependable charging is not practical, compare the separately powered XC90 instead of treating the two SUVs as equivalent.
