1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy a home battery only after defining the job it must do. Backup during outages, using more of your own solar after sunset, avoiding expensive time-of-use periods, and reducing demand charges can require different battery sizes, controls, and electrical work. A battery’s advertised capacity is not the same as whole-home backup: the inverter, transfer or isolation equipment, backed-up circuits, installation, utility rules, and local code determine what actually works.
Before signing, require a site-specific design and an itemized installed quote. Check energy capacity in kilowatt-hours (kWh), power in kilowatts (kW), compatibility with your solar and electrical equipment, outage behavior, installer credentials, safety approvals, warranty limits, and the tariff and incentives where you live.

1. Decide what the battery is supposed to accomplish
Write the primary objective at the top of every proposal. The objective controls the design assumptions and the financial case.

If the priority is keeping the home operating during a grid failure, identify which circuits must remain live and how long you want them to run. A refrigerator, medical equipment, internet equipment, lights, a heating or cooling system, a well pump, and a garage door opener have very different energy and starting-power requirements. A design for a few critical circuits is not equivalent to a design for the entire service panel.

Solar self-consumption
When export credits are worth less than the retail electricity rate, charging during the day and using stored energy in the evening can increase the value of existing solar. The useful battery size depends on your daytime surplus and evening load, not simply on the size of the photovoltaic array.
Time-of-use or demand-charge management
A battery may be scheduled to discharge during expensive rate windows or to reduce a measured demand peak. The result depends on the utility tariff, the meter configuration, and the control software. A battery that is economical under one tariff can be unnecessary under another.
The U.S. Department of Energy identifies outage concerns, non-one-to-one solar export compensation, and time-of-use or demand charges as common reasons to consider storage. Ask the installer to model your stated objective rather than presenting a generic savings estimate.
2. Size energy and power separately
Two numbers answer different questions:
- Energy capacity (kWh): how much electricity the battery can store and deliver over time.
- Power (kW): how many loads can operate at once, including the brief surge when motors start.
A system can have enough kWh for an overnight outage but still trip if a pump, compressor, or air-conditioner starts while other loads are running. Conversely, a high-power system can run many appliances simultaneously but run out of stored energy quickly.
Estimate the energy requirement
- Collect at least 12 months of utility bills, including summer and winter. Record total kWh and the highest-use months.
- List the loads you want during an outage and their approximate run time. Separate essential loads from conveniences.
- Set an outage target, such as overnight, one day, or a longer weather-related interruption. Do not use an average outage figure as a guarantee for your area.
- Account for conversion losses, reserve settings, and the fact that a battery’s advertised capacity may not equal the energy available to your loads.
- Have the installer show the calculation in writing, including usable kWh, reserve percentage, and the assumed solar recharge.
For broad context only, a U.S. Energy Information Administration figure reported in a 2025 Tesla sizing guide is about 10,500 kWh per year, or approximately 29 kWh per day. That is a population-level reference, not a target for an individual home. Your bills and the circuits you choose are more useful than a national median.
Estimate the power requirement
- Record the running watts or rated kW for each critical appliance.
- Add the loads that could operate at the same time.
- Identify motor-driven equipment—such as pumps, refrigerators, freezers, fans, and compressors—and ask for its starting or surge requirement.
- Check both the battery’s continuous output and its peak or short-duration output.
- Confirm that the backed-up panel, transfer equipment, and service conductors are rated for the proposed current.
Tesla lists its Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh and 11.5 kW of continuous output in specifications cited by its 2025 guide. Those figures illustrate why both measures matter; they are not a universal recommendation or proof that one unit will run your home.

How many batteries do you need?
Use the larger of two requirements: the energy needed for the intended duration and the power needed for simultaneous loads. If either requirement exceeds one unit’s usable capacity or output, the design may require additional units, load management, a different inverter, or fewer backed-up circuits. The installer should show the result for normal operation and for the worst case you care about, such as a cold night with heating equipment running.

3. Map your existing solar and electrical equipment
Before comparing products, photograph and record the equipment already installed. Give each bidder the same information.
- Solar array size and panel layout, if known.
- Inverter make, model, quantity, and location.
- Whether the system uses microinverters, a string inverter, a hybrid inverter, or another architecture.
- Main service rating, panel rating, available breaker space, and any subpanels.
- Existing monitoring, energy-management, generator, or battery equipment.
- Utility interconnection paperwork and any export limit.
Request written confirmation that the proposed battery, inverter, gateway, meters, and controls work with this exact equipment. A manufacturer’s general compatibility page does not replace a site-specific electrical design. The proposal should identify what remains, what is replaced, and what new communications or metering hardware is required.
Existing-solar example
An Enphase announcement describes an IQ Battery 10C used with a Combiner 6C and Meter Collar for some existing third-party solar arrangements. The announcement includes forward-looking statements, so confirm current availability, firmware requirements, local installer support, and compatibility with your inverter before treating that configuration as an option.
4. Define exactly what happens in an outage
Grid-tied solar panels normally shut down when the grid fails. This prevents an energized line from being back-fed while utility crews work. Solar can continue operating during an outage only when the system has properly configured storage and inverter controls that isolate the home from the grid and manage the solar array.

Questions your bid must answer
- Is the design for selected circuits, a backed-up subpanel, or the entire home?
- What device disconnects and isolates the home from the utility?
- How quickly does backup power begin, and will sensitive electronics notice an interruption?
- What happens to large loads such as central air-conditioning, electric heating, ranges, water heaters, pumps, and electric-vehicle charging?
- Can the solar array recharge the battery while the grid is down?
- What happens when the battery reaches its reserve or minimum state of charge?
- Can the system curtail solar production to avoid overcharging or overloading the islanded microgrid?
Ask for a one-line diagram showing the utility meter, service equipment, solar inverter, battery, isolation device, backed-up panel, and non-backed-up loads. If a salesperson says “whole-home backup,” require the exact circuits and operating limits in the contract.

5. Compare installed proposals on the same assumptions
Obtain at least two written, itemized proposals and require every bidder to use the same load list, outage duration, solar-production assumptions, and utility tariff. Compare the complete installed system, not the battery cabinet alone.
| Item to compare | What to require in writing |
|---|---|
| Battery capacity | Usable kWh, nominal kWh if different, reserve setting, and whether capacity is guaranteed at installation or over the warranty period |
| Power | Continuous kW, peak or surge kW, duration of the peak rating, and any temperature or state-of-charge limits |
| Inverter architecture | Integrated or separate inverter, compatibility with your solar design, and which equipment is replaced or retained |
| Backup scope | Circuits or panels covered, transfer or isolation equipment, transition time, and load-management devices |
| Solar during outage | Whether solar charging is supported, under what conditions, and how production is curtailed |
| Electrical work | Gateway, switch, meter, panel, conduit, breakers, service upgrades, structural work, and equipment relocation |
| Approvals | Permit applications, utility interconnection, inspection, commissioning, and emergency labeling |
| Monitoring and service | App or web monitoring, communications requirements, response process, and who handles a fault |
| Warranty | Years, throughput or cycle limits, capacity-retention promise, labor coverage, exclusions, and transferability |
| Expansion | Whether more batteries can be added later, maximum system size, and whether expansion changes the warranty |
| Total price | Installed total, taxes and fees, recurring service charges, and the assumptions behind any incentive |
Have each bidder explain differences instead of allowing one quote to omit a gateway, panel work, permit, or commissioning service that another quote includes.
6. Check the installer, permits, and handover documents
A home battery is a grid-connected electrical installation, not a plug-in appliance. The U.S. Department of Energy advises using quality products and properly licensed installers.
Verify before signing
- State or local electrical license and any required solar or storage credential.
- Who performs the work if the seller uses subcontractors.
- Insurance, bonding, and responsibility for damage or code corrections.
- Experience with your inverter brand, service-panel configuration, and utility.
- References for completed storage installations of similar complexity.
- Who owns the permit, inspection, utility approval, and final commissioning process.
Put responsibility for permits and utility approvals in the contract. At handover, obtain the as-built diagram, equipment serial numbers, operating instructions, monitoring login, warranty documents, inspection sign-off, emergency shutdown instructions, and a record of the final settings. Do not make the final payment until the system has been commissioned and the promised backup behavior has been demonstrated.
7. Treat safety and local code as design requirements
Ask for the product and system safety certifications named in the proposal and the installation documentation required by your authority having jurisdiction. UL 9540 is a North American energy-storage system and equipment safety standard identified in the Department of Energy’s solar-fire-safety guidance. Certification is important, but it does not by itself satisfy every local fire, electrical, zoning, or placement rule.
Placement and emergency access
Confirm the permitted location, required clearances, ventilation or separation requirements, wall or pad construction, flood and weather exposure, and access for firefighters and service technicians. The installer and local authority should resolve these details before equipment is ordered. Do not move a battery after installation without checking whether the new location changes the approval.

Labels and shutdown procedures
Emergency responders need clear labels showing the presence of solar and storage, disconnect locations, and the path of energized conductors. Ask who installs the labels and who explains the shutdown sequence. Keep the manual and emergency information where household members and responders can find them.
8. Recheck the economics for your address
Do not accept a universal payback period or a national incentive example. The financial result depends on your utility’s current retail rate, export credit, time-of-use schedule, demand charges, fixed charges, battery degradation assumptions, financing cost, and installation scope.
Information to collect
- Current and upcoming electricity tariffs.
- Export-credit or net-metering rules and any eligibility deadline.
- Demand-charge calculation, if your account has one.
- Interconnection limits and whether adding storage requires a new application.
- State, local, utility, or federal programs and their eligibility rules.
- Whether an incentive applies to the battery, the solar system, installation labor, or only a particular use.
Verify every program with the utility or program administrator. Incentives and tariffs are location-specific and can change; an advertised example may not apply to your address, tax situation, equipment configuration, or installation date.
Request a transparent model
The quote should show the assumed annual solar production, household consumption, battery dispatch schedule, export value, degradation, maintenance, financing, and incentive treatment. Ask for separate scenarios for outage-only operation, solar self-consumption, and time-of-use shifting if you are considering more than one goal. No current independent installed-price figure is established here, so treat any price or payback claim as a site-specific estimate rather than a market-wide benchmark.

Assuming solar works during an outage
A conventional grid-tied array normally shuts down when the grid is unavailable. Confirm the isolation and inverter controls that create a safe island before expecting solar production.
Calling a selected-circuit system “whole-home backup”
Ask for the backed-up panel schedule and the operating limits for every large appliance. Get changes to the circuit scope in writing.
Comparing cabinet prices instead of installed systems
A lower equipment price can exclude the gateway, meter, panel modifications, permits, utility work, commissioning, or future service. Compare itemized installed totals.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using an average outage to choose capacity
A reported average outage duration of 5.5 hours, based on 2022 data cited by Tesla’s 2025 guide, cannot represent local severe-weather events. Choose a duration based on your location, critical needs, and tolerance for fuel or utility backup.
Assuming a broad compatibility statement is enough
Compatibility can depend on inverter model, firmware, wiring, service rating, meters, and utility approval. Require a written design for your address and equipment.
Leaving warranty and service vague
Ask who pays labor, shipping, diagnostics, and removal if a component fails. Clarify capacity-retention terms, cycle or throughput limits, exclusions, and what happens if the installer closes or the equipment changes ownership.
11. Use this pre-purchase decision sequence
- Define the goal: outage protection, evening solar use, tariff management, or a combination.
- Assemble data: bills, load list, solar and inverter records, service-panel details, and utility documents.
- Set the outage scenario: circuits, duration, large-load behavior, and solar-recharge expectation.
- Obtain comparable designs: require the same assumptions and an itemized scope from each bidder.
- Check technical fit: usable kWh, continuous and surge kW, inverter compatibility, controls, expansion, and monitoring.
- Check approval and safety: licensed installer, product documentation, permits, utility interconnection, placement, clearances, and labels.
- Check the contract: total installed price, incentive assumptions, warranty, service responsibility, commissioning, and handover documents.
- Test the promised result: after installation, verify monitoring, backup transition, critical circuits, solar recharge behavior if promised, and emergency shutdown instructions.
The right battery is the one whose usable energy, power, controls, installation, and operating rules match your stated objective and local constraints. A larger nameplate battery cannot correct an undersized inverter, an unsuitable panel design, missing permits, or an economic model based on the wrong tariff.
