Before buying a high-performance luxury SUV, verify the exact vehicle and equipment, calculate its full ownership cost, check its history and recalls if used, drive it yourself, and arrange an independent mechanical inspection. Pay particular attention to the drivetrain, brakes, tires, wheels and suspension. A polished interior, a clean history report or a dealer’s certification is not proof that the SUV is mechanically sound.
This checklist is U.S.-oriented. Rules and paperwork vary by location, and no general checklist replaces model-specific service information or an inspection by a qualified mechanic.
1. Decide what you need, then compare exact configurations
Start with how you will use the SUV—not its badge or horsepower figure. Write down passenger and cargo needs, typical roads and weather, annual mileage, and any towing requirements. If you are considering a plug-in hybrid or electric SUV, consider whether you can charge it where you park.
Compare vehicles with the same model year, trim, options, wheel and tire package, and warranty status. Equipment can vary within a model line, including safety features and headlights. A rating or award for one configuration should not automatically be applied to another.

Luxury can add costs both at purchase and during ownership. Consider reliability, safety and owner-satisfaction information alongside performance and equipment; do not choose on the badge alone. Consumer Reports’ car coverage describes its ratings as drawing on testing, reliability, owner satisfaction and safety inputs. Check the current page for the exact model year and configuration rather than relying on a model name or an old ranking.
2. Calculate the cost beyond the advertised price
Ask the seller for an itemized out-the-door price. Compare the total amount you would pay—not just the monthly payment or advertised financing rate. Financing adds interest, and a lower payment can reflect a longer loan rather than a less expensive deal.
- Purchase costs: vehicle price, sales tax, registration and other applicable fees.
- Running costs: insurance, fuel or charging, scheduled maintenance and expected wear items.
- Financing: interest and the total amount due over the loan term.
Consumer.gov’s car-buying guidance specifically identifies registration, sales tax, insurance, gas and maintenance as additional costs. For a performance trim, ask a dealer service department or qualified specialist for the model-specific maintenance schedule and an estimate before committing; costs depend on the particular vehicle and its service needs.
3. For a used SUV, verify its identity, paperwork and history
Match the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the SUV with the title and sale documents. Get a vehicle-history report and review the title, ownership, and any accident or flood information it reports. Reports can omit events that were never recorded, so a clean report does not establish the vehicle’s current condition.

Ask for dated service invoices and compare them with the scheduled maintenance for the exact model and year. Look for evidence that maintenance was completed, and ask whether software updates, service campaigns and recall repairs have been done. Paperwork helps establish what has been reported or documented; it cannot show everything happening mechanically now.
For a dealer-sold used car, read the Buyers Guide and the warranty terms before agreeing to the sale. The FTC explains how the Buyers Guide helps buyers understand whether a vehicle is sold as-is or with warranty coverage in its used-car buying guidance.
Check recalls using the actual VIN or plate
Search the SUV by VIN or license plate using NHTSA’s recall lookup, then confirm any open remedy with the manufacturer or dealer. NHTSA’s consumer safety resource page reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025. That aggregate count is a reason to check the individual vehicle; it does not measure the risk of a particular SUV.
4. Compare safety for the specific year and equipment
Look up crash-test results and award criteria for the exact model year and vehicle category. Check which headlights and crash-prevention systems are standard, which are optional, and whether the specific vehicle has them. IIHS award qualifications can depend on equipment or build date, so an award for one configuration is not necessarily applicable to every SUV carrying the same model name.

The IIHS award page includes 2025–26 midsize luxury SUV examples such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class; the GLE listing specifies optional pedestrian front crash prevention. Read the listing’s conditions for the year and build date you are considering. An award is not a complete ranking of every safety factor or a guarantee of performance in every crash.
5. Test-drive the actual SUV
Drive the vehicle you may buy, preferably from a cold start if that is practical. Use roads and conditions similar to your regular driving, while obeying speed limits. A test drive can reveal how the vehicle behaves in ordinary use, but it cannot reliably expose every hidden fault.
- Check acceleration, braking, steering and transmission behavior.
- Notice visibility, seat comfort, cabin noise and whether the controls are easy to use.
- Try driver-assistance features only as intended and in safe conditions.
- Pay attention to warning lights, unusual noises and inconsistent behavior.
Consumer.gov recommends test-driving in representative conditions. Treat the drive as your own usability check, not a substitute for a mechanic’s examination.

Especially for a used performance SUV, choose a mechanic familiar with the make and its performance systems. Have the buyer—not only the seller—arrange the inspection. Ask for a written report identifying the vehicle, noting repair needs and, where possible, estimating their cost. An estimate can help you decide whether to proceed or negotiate.

Ask the mechanic to tailor the inspection to the exact model and available service information. Relevant areas can include diagnostic faults, engine and transmission operation, leaks, driveline, steering and suspension, brakes, wheels, tire wear, body repairs, electronics and road-test behavior.
The FTC recommends a mechanical inspection even when a used car is dealer-certified. It distinguishes that examination from a safety inspection: passing one does not establish the other. Certification also does not make an independent inspection redundant. See the FTC’s guidance on buying a used car from a dealer.
Include tires, wheels, brakes and suspension
Ask the inspector to document tire condition and wear, wheel condition, brake condition and suspension behavior rather than relying on a quick visual impression. Uneven tire wear or other findings need interpretation in context; have the mechanic explain what they mean for this vehicle.
Manufacturer checklists can illustrate inspection scope, but they are not independent proof that a particular vehicle is sound. BMW’s Certified checklist includes the line, “Passes a tire, wheel, and brake inspection,” alongside other checks. That is a BMW Certified checklist item, not a promise that every BMW sale—or every luxury SUV—has met the same standard. BMW also lists history, maintenance, body condition, mechanical inspection, diagnostics and a road test in its BMW Certified checklist.

Tesla’s Model X service manual instructs technicians to measure and record tread depth. A tire tread depth gauge can help you make a basic measurement for your own records, but it cannot replace an inspection on a lift, a brake assessment, model-specific diagnostics or professional judgment. 7. Understand the warranty and any optional coverage
Separate any remaining manufacturer warranty from a dealer or third-party service contract and from a prepaid maintenance plan. These products are not interchangeable. The CFPB says manufacturer warranties generally cover specified defects or failures for a time or mileage limit, and generally do not cover routine maintenance or ordinary wear. Extended warranties, also called service contracts, are optional; coverage varies and routine maintenance is commonly excluded. Read the CFPB’s service-contract overview.
Before paying for an add-on, read the actual contract and check:
- Which parts and repairs are covered, and what is excluded.
- Coverage limits, term, deductible and price.
- Whether repairs need prior authorization and whether you must use a specific shop or network.
- Eligibility, transferability and cancellation terms.
- Whether the contract duplicates coverage still available under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Use the checks to make a decision
Use the inspection report, records, recall status and contract terms together. If the seller will not allow a reasonable independent inspection, the history is unclear, or the mechanic identifies repairs you cannot price or accept, pause before signing. Ask questions, get estimates and compare another exact configuration if necessary. The right decision depends on the particular SUV’s condition, equipment, documentation and total cost—not on its performance credentials alone.
