The right choice depends on your usual journeys, whether you can charge regularly, the specific cars you are comparing and their costs at your actual fuel or electricity prices. Start with a typical week, then compare realistic range, running costs and any local restrictions—not just the headline figures on a car’s specification sheet.
Start with the journeys you actually make
Before comparing engines, map out a normal week. Note the length and frequency of your trips, how often you make longer journeys, the proportion of urban and motorway driving, and your approximate annual mileage. Also consider where the car is parked and whether you could charge at home or work.
- Short, regular trips: Ask whether most could be completed on electricity, and whether a diesel’s emissions standard and your local rules suit the routes.
- Frequent long journeys: Compare motorway consumption, usable range and the time or stops needed on longer trips.
- Reliable charging: Home or workplace charging can make an EV or PHEV easier to use and change its running-cost calculation.
- No dependable charging: Factor in where you would charge, how often, the price and time involved, and whether those arrangements fit your routine.
This is a way to narrow the options, not a universal rule: compare particular models against your own driving and circumstances.
How the four powertrains differ
Battery-electric car (BEV)
A BEV uses a battery and electric motor alone. It has no combustion engine, so it must be charged. Energy Saving Trust says most battery-electric cars have a real-world range of around 220 miles, while some exceed 300 miles. These are broad guide figures, not promises for a particular model or journey; the vehicle, battery, chargepoint, driving style and load all affect the result. Rapid charging can also cost more than charging at home. Energy Saving Trust’s electric vehicle guidance, last updated 21 August 2026, explains these variables.

A BEV deserves serious consideration when charging is practical and the car’s usable range fits your usual driving. For long trips, check the candidate model’s route and charging options rather than assuming its advertised range or a general average will match your experience.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
A PHEV combines a plug-in battery and electric motor with a combustion engine. Depending on the vehicle and how it is driven, it can use electricity, petrol or diesel, or both. Its case is strongest when you can charge frequently and many of your trips fit its electric range, while the engine remains useful for other journeys.
Energy Saving Trust’s advice is direct: “PHEVs are only efficient if you charge them regularly.” If charging is irregular, a PHEV can cost more to run than a petrol or diesel vehicle. The Climate Change Committee’s 2026 report adds an important qualification about official test figures: onboard fuel-recorder data from thousands of new PHEVs sold in Europe in 2021 showed real-world fuel consumption nearly three and a half times higher than the previous international testing assessment. This does not predict the result for every model or driver, but it is a reason to take charging habits and real-world use seriously.

You do not necessarily need to charge every day; the practical question is whether you can charge often enough for the journeys you expect to do electrically. Compare the car’s electric range with those trips and assess how often you would otherwise rely on its engine.
Petrol
A petrol car avoids the need to plug in, but its real-world fuel economy and emissions depend on the particular model and how you use it. Compare candidate cars using the routes you drive, rather than treating petrol as a single cost or emissions profile.
Diesel
A diesel may suit some drivers and routes, but do not choose one on the assumption that diesel is automatically better for high mileage or worse for every short trip. Consider the specific vehicle, its emissions standard, your driving pattern and the rules where you will drive. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) says petrol cars tend to have higher greenhouse gas emissions than diesel equivalents but significantly lower nitrogen oxides (NOx). It also says Euro 6d RDE Step 2 reduced real-world NOx emissions in compliant diesels, bringing them much closer to petrol equivalents. These comparisons do not replace checking the car’s own specifications or local access requirements.

Compare running costs using your own prices
Energy Saving Trust’s UK guidance provides a useful illustration, not a personal quote: a full home charge producing a typical range of around 220 miles costs about £17, compared with up to £45 to drive 220 miles in a petrol or diesel car. It says a full charge can cost about £8 on an eligible time-of-use home tariff; such tariffs typically require a smart meter. Your vehicle, tariff and charging method determine what you would actually pay. The guide was last updated 21 August 2026. See the Energy Saving Trust’s charging and cost guidance.
For each car you are considering, estimate energy costs from your own routine and prices. For an EV, include the mix of home, workplace and public charging you expect to use; for a PHEV, account for both electricity and fuel, reflecting how often you would charge. For petrol and diesel, use the specific car’s consumption figures as a starting point, then allow for the fact that official figures may not match your driving.
The Climate Change Committee’s 2026 report estimated annual driving costs for a new PHEV at around £70 less than a comparable new petrol car and around £370 more than a comparable new EV, using the report’s stated energy-price assumptions. The report notes those prices were before the start of the Iran war. These are not current-price estimates or universal comparisons; your own prices, model and charging pattern can change the result.

Use official figures as comparisons, not guarantees
The VCA’s new-car guide lists official test data for fuel consumption, CO2 and other tailpipe emissions across petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars. That makes it useful for comparing specific models on a consistent basis, but the agency cautions that official WLTP figures may not reflect real driving. Use the figures to shortlist and compare cars, then consider whether their likely performance suits your routes and charging habits. Consult the VCA fuel consumption guide.
PHEVs need particular care in interpreting test consumption because the result depends on charging and use. A quoted fuel figure alone does not tell you how much of your own driving will be electric or how often you will use the engine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare total ownership, not just fuel or charging
For each candidate, compare the purchase price and the period you expect to keep it alongside expected fuel or electricity costs. Include service, maintenance, vehicle tax and insurance where you have current, model-specific figures. Also assess realistic range, charging time or stops on long trips, emissions and relevant local access rules. A cheaper energy cost per mile does not by itself establish which car will cost less to own.

Tax rules, grants, road charges and local restrictions can change. Check current official guidance for the car and location you have in mind rather than relying on an old general comparison. The government’s page on the phase-out of new petrol and diesel car sales says the phase-out is set for 2035 and was last updated 10 April 2025; it is policy context, not a substitute for checking current rules. Read the government’s 2035 delivery plan.
Energy Saving Trust’s guidance, last updated 21 August 2026, says a new road charge for EVs and PHEVs is due from April 2028 at 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for PHEVs. Treat this as a dated policy statement and verify current official information before using it in a cost calculation. The same guidance discusses vehicle tax and manufacturer-applied EV grant discounts, which should also be checked for current eligibility and terms. Check the latest Energy Saving Trust guidance.
Can you manage an electric car without home charging?
Possibly, but assess your real charging options before choosing. Identify chargers you can reliably use near home, work or places you already visit; check their availability, prices and likely time commitment. If you cannot charge at home, do not assume home-charging costs or convenience will apply to you. A home EV charger or chargepoint is relevant only if your home and parking arrangement support installation; it is not a universal requirement or recommendation.
Quick Recap
A practical shortlist
- Write down your routine: typical trip lengths, regular long journeys, urban and motorway use, annual mileage, parking and charging access.
- Choose specific candidate models: include petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV only where each seems workable for your journeys.
- Check official comparison figures: use the VCA guide for consumption and emissions, remembering WLTP results may differ from real driving.
- Estimate your energy costs: use your fuel prices, electricity tariff and likely charging mix; for a PHEV, be realistic about how regularly you will plug in.
- Check practicalities and ownership costs: compare range, charging stops or time, purchase price, expected ownership period, insurance, maintenance, tax and local access rules using current model-specific information.
- Revisit the choice if an assumption fails: if charging is less reliable than expected or a route is longer than the car’s usable range allows, reassess the model or powertrain rather than relying on a headline figure.
