Record each implement’s power, PTO, hydraulic, hitch, drawbar, axle, tire or track, and transport requirements, then verify the tractor’s rated engine power, maximum engine power, PTO output, transmission, hydraulic performance, ballast, and controls.
For a used tractor, treat a visual walkaround as only the beginning. A qualified mechanic or dealer should document the powertrain, hydraulics, PTO, hitch, axles, fluids, cab systems, service history, and operational tests before you sign.

Start with the work, not the horsepower badge
There is no reliable horsepower-per-acre formula. Two farms with the same acreage can need very different tractors because soil, terrain, tillage depth, travel speed, implement width, transport distance, and annual hours differ. Define the work cycle first.

Build an implement requirements sheet
List the largest and most frequently used tools. For every implement, obtain the manufacturer’s requirements from its manual or specification plate and record:

Mark which jobs are occasional and which consume most of the tractor’s hours. A tractor sized only for the biggest implement can be inefficient or awkward for lighter, repetitive work; a tractor sized for routine work may not safely handle the biggest tool.
Read horsepower figures as separate measurements
Manufacturers publish horsepower under specified testing conventions. Keep the rated figure, maximum figure, and PTO figure in separate columns in your comparison. Read the footnotes that identify the standard, correction factors, and whether a boost is available only in particular applications.
Rated versus maximum engine horsepower
John Deere’s US specification page for the 7R 270, accessed October 13, 2026, lists 270 rated engine horsepower and 297 maximum engine horsepower. Its 6M 230 page lists 230 rated and 253 maximum engine horsepower. These are model-page examples, not recommendations; model year, region, transmission, emissions equipment, tires, and other configuration details can change the quoted specification.

Do not treat maximum engine power as a continuous PTO rating. Ask the dealer for the PTO horsepower measured under the manufacturer’s stated standard and for the exact serial-numbered configuration being quoted.

Understand application-specific power boosts
The 6M 230 product information describes up to a 20-hp Intelligent Power Management boost in non-stationary PTO and transport applications. That is an application-specific feature, not a replacement for the base rated figure. Confirm when the boost activates, what conditions are required, and whether your implement’s duty cycle qualifies.
Choose the transmission for the work cycle
Transmission choice affects speed control, direction changes, efficiency, operator workload, and service complexity. Deere lists an e23 Powershift or IVT for the 7R 270. Compare the transmission actually installed—not merely the options shown for a model family.
Powershift questions
- Can the tractor shift through the needed speeds under load without excessive interruption?
- Are the clutch packs, controls, and calibration records documented?
- Will your jobs require frequent forward-reverse changes, and does the shuttle response suit those operators?
Infinitely variable transmission questions
- Can the operator hold the precise field or road speed required by the implement?
- What are the manufacturer’s requirements for oil, filters, calibration, and diagnostic service?
- Does the fitted control layout make speed and direction changes intuitive for every operator?
During a demonstration, perform the actual work cycle: pull away, change direction, accelerate to transport speed, slow under load, and repeat at operating temperature. A transmission that feels smooth cold may reveal faults after heat and load are introduced.
Verify hydraulics, hitch, PTO, drawbar, and axles
Hydraulic capacity
Match pump flow, pressure, remote-valve count, coupler type, and return plumbing to the implement sheet. Ask for the hydraulic flow specification for the exact tractor and have a used unit tested. A seller’s verbal statement is not a flow test. Record oil temperature, test method, measured flow, pressure, and which remote or circuit was used.

Three-point hitch and drawbar
Confirm the hitch category, lift capacity at the implement’s center of gravity, stabilizer arrangement, top-link size, and draft-control functions. For drawn equipment, verify the drawbar’s permitted vertical and pull loads, clevis or hole configuration, and whether a heavy-duty drawbar is fitted. The 7R 270 product information identifies a Category 4 HD drawbar for heavier implements; that does not establish fit for every tool.
PTO
Check available PTO speeds, shaft dimensions, shield condition, engagement controls, and whether the tractor provides the clutch or brake behavior the implement requires. On a used machine, test engagement, disengagement, stopping time, and operation under load. A PTO that turns unloaded can still slip or fail to stop correctly.
Axles and MFWD
Specify two-wheel drive, MFWD, suspended front axle, differential-lock operation, and axle or final-drive ratings for the intended loads. Inspect front-axle joints, seals, hubs, steering stops, and evidence of impact or overload. Confirm that MFWD engages and disengages cleanly in a controlled test.

Set ballast and tires for the application
Ballast is not a universal percentage or a fixed number of wheel weights. Deere says the proper amount depends on horsepower, ground speed during draft applications, and implement type. Its guidance discusses wheel slip, weight split, tire pressure, and model-specific ballast components; observe the tire manufacturer’s load ratings and the tractor manufacturer’s permitted combinations.

Deere’s UK guidance states that power is delivered most efficiently when wheel slip is between 8% and 12%. The same page gives an example in which reducing tire pressure from 1.5 to 0.7 bar cut wheel slip by more than half and reduced fuel consumption by 13%. Those are Deere’s stated guidance and example, not an independently documented universal result. Measure slip in your soil and operating conditions rather than copying the figures blindly.
Questions for a new configuration
- What front, rear-wheel, or track ballast is approved for this series and axle configuration?
- Will the selected weights keep each tire or track within its load rating during field and road work?
- Does the implement require front ballast for steering control, rear ballast for traction, or a particular front-to-rear weight split?
- Are the tires rated for the intended speed, inflation pressure, axle load, and road distance?
Do not assume a generic tractor ballast weight fits. Confirm series, wheel or track setup, mounting hardware, and permitted load with the manufacturer or dealer.
Evaluate the cab and operator interface
Have every regular operator sit in the cab for a realistic session. Check seat adjustment, suspension, armrests, seatbelts, steering-wheel position, mirrors, glass, wipers, lighting, climate control, noise, display readability, guidance equipment, and the reach to hydraulic, PTO, hitch, transmission, and loader controls.
Visibility to the hitch, drawbar, front axle, implement corners, and road edges matters as much as screen size. Check entry steps and handrails, emergency exits, cab-suspension movement, and whether attachments or exhaust components obstruct sight lines. A comfortable seat cannot compensate for controls that force unsafe twisting or delayed reactions.

What to check before buying a used high-horsepower tractor
Arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic or participating dealer and require written findings. AGCO’s 2015 high-horsepower certified pre-owned checklist describes a 120-plus-point inspection covering the powertrain, systems, operator platform, operational tests, fluids, maintenance, and repair history. It is a useful category list, not proof that a particular tractor passed it.
1. Establish identity and history
- Photograph and record the model, serial number, model year, engine hours, transmission hours if displayed, and any separate PTO or hydraulic-hour counters.
- Compare the identification plate with registration, invoices, manuals, keys, and the seller’s description.
- Request ownership, maintenance, repair, accident, campaign, and major-component replacement records.
- Confirm which attachments, weights, guidance displays, receivers, remotes, and tire sets are included.
- Check that required manuals and diagnostic information are present and that no safety campaign or software update is outstanding.
2. Inspect the structure and rolling gear
- Look for frame cracks, bent rails, weld repairs, distorted sheet metal, missing fasteners, and oil tracks around seals.
- Inspect steps, handrails, glass, mirrors, lights, work lamps, and access panels.
- Measure tire wear and inspect sidewalls, bead areas, valve stems, wheel centers, studs, nuts, and evidence of mismatched sizes or chronic underinflation.
- On track machines, inspect belts, bogies, idlers, rollers, reaction arms, guides, and final drives for wear or leakage.
- Check the drawbar, safety-chain points, PTO shaft and shield, hitch balls, lift arms, stabilizers, and supplied attachments.
3. Check the engine and powertrain
Inspect the air intake, turbocharger plumbing, exhaust, cooling stack, radiator, charge-air cooler, fan, belts, hoses, fuel system, battery, wiring, and visible leaks. Ask when engine, transmission, axle, final-drive, and hydraulic services were performed and which filters and fluids were used.
With the engine cold, note starting time, smoke, noises, warning lamps, and oil pressure behavior. Repeat observations at operating temperature. Inspect the transmission, differential, hydrostatic components where fitted, clutch or powershift behavior, park lock, and neutral-start interlock. A clean exterior does not establish internal condition.

- Inspect engine oil, transmission oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, axle oil, and final-drive oil for level, color, odor, water, metal, or cross-contamination.
- Verify coolant freeze protection and look for residue around water-pump, radiator, head, and hose connections.
- Cut or inspect filters when appropriate and document unusual debris.
- Review service intervals and calibration records for transmission, hydraulics, guidance, and emission systems.
- Consider oil analysis through a qualified service provider when the purchase value or suspected wear justifies it; the AGCO checklist names fluid tests but does not prescribe a particular laboratory method.
5. Perform a complete operational test
- Start and warm the tractor while recording ambient conditions, cold-start behavior, warning lights, and gauge readings.
- Road-test steering, brakes, suspension, acceleration, deceleration, cruise functions, and straight-line tracking where permitted and safe.
- Cycle every forward and reverse range, powershift step or IVT response, clutch, shuttle, park lock, and neutral-start interlock.
- Engage and disengage the differential lock and MFWD/front-axle drive; listen for noise and check for binding.
- Operate the three-point hitch through its range and hold a load long enough to identify drift, chatter, or slow response.
- Run each remote valve and measure hydraulic flow under the documented test conditions.
- Engage the PTO at each available speed, test the clutch or brake, and confirm that it stops as specified.
- Operate guidance, displays, lights, wipers, climate control, seat suspension, switches, and warning systems.
- Record each defect, fault code, leak, temperature, pressure, and test condition in writing.
6. Inspect the cab and safety equipment
Check seat, belt, armrests, pedals, steering, mirrors, glass, door latches, emergency exits, dashboard, gauges, lights, air conditioning, heater, wipers, suspension, and every switch. Confirm that warning alarms and interlocks function. Compare displayed hours with wear on pedals, seat, controls, steps, and hitch components; a mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof of fraud by itself.
7. Get the warranty in writing
Request the complete warranty or certified-pre-owned contract, including covered components, deductible, start date, time or hour limit, geographic restrictions, claim procedure, labor terms, and exclusions. AGCO’s 2015 checklist describes protection of at least 12 months or 500 hours under specified start-date conditions, with a $250 incident deductible and component limitations. Those terms belong to that historical document; restrictions apply, so confirm current terms with the participating dealer before relying on them.
Compare ownership support before signing
Obtain a written configuration and service quote that identifies the tractor serial number, transmission, hydraulic remotes, PTO, hitch and drawbar equipment, axle, tires or tracks, ballast, guidance hardware, and included attachments. Verify local dealer capability, technician training, diagnostic access, parts availability, expected lead times, and regional regulations for road operation.
Ask specifically which repairs are excluded, who pays transport to the workshop, whether software or calibration work is covered, and how scheduled maintenance affects warranty eligibility. The available evidence does not establish a universal purchase price, financing term, fuel-cost advantage, best brand, or ownership-cost total; calculate those from the exact machine, local support, hours, and implement fleet.

A practical decision sequence
- List the heaviest and most frequent jobs and every implement requirement.
- Separate rated engine horsepower, maximum engine horsepower, and PTO horsepower using the manufacturer’s stated test standard.
- Choose a transmission and axle configuration that match field speed changes, loading, transport, and operator skill.
- Verify hydraulic flow, remote count, PTO, hitch, drawbar, and tire or track ratings against the implement sheet.
- Specify ballast and tire pressure for the application, preserving approved load ratings.
- Inspect the cab with the actual operators and planned hours in mind.
- For a used unit, complete the documented inspection and operational test before negotiating.
- Resolve defects, warranty exclusions, service support, and parts availability in writing before payment.
