A large discount is only a good deal after you verify five things: the complete written price, the seller’s legal responsibility, the exact vehicle and documents, the vehicle-specific warranty and service network, and the VIN’s recall status. The legal sources cited here apply to household cars sold in mainland China; a purchase in another country may follow different consumer, import, tax and warranty rules.
First define what “discounted” means
Do not evaluate the percentage discount before establishing the reference price. Ask the seller to state the vehicle’s total selling price and every additional charge in writing. A low advertised figure may exclude registration assistance, delivery, finance, inspection, accessories, compulsory insurance or workshop fees. Those items are not interchangeable: some may be optional, some may be required for your transaction, and some may be negotiable.

China’s automobile-sales rules require dealers to display prices for vehicles, parts and services, including related fees, and prohibit charging more than the stated price. They also require a sales contract and a truthful sales invoice. Read the figures on the contract and invoice rather than relying on a social-media post or a salesperson’s verbal promise. 1. Identify the seller and who will be responsible
Check authorization, not just the showroom
Ask whether the seller is authorized by the vehicle supplier or overseas manufacturer for this transaction. If the seller is not authorized, China’s automobile-sales rules require written notice of that fact and identification of the party responsible for the sale. The notice should be specific enough to match the contract and invoice; a vague statement that the vehicle is “parallel imported” or “from another channel” is not a substitute.

Record the seller’s legal entity, business address, telephone number, invoice name, bank-account name and the name of the person signing the contract. If those identities differ, ask the seller to explain the relationship and put it in the contract. Pay a company account that matches the contracting party unless a documented, lawful arrangement says otherwise.
Put promises in the contract
Have the contract identify the vehicle by VIN, exact trim and equipment, selling price, fees, delivery location, delivery date, warranty provider, repair network and any conditions attached to the discount. Include the seller’s statement about authorization and the named party responsible for warranty or after-sales obligations. A chat message can support your records, but it should not replace the signed sales contract and invoice.
Ask why the price is lower
Request a written explanation of the discount: inventory age, demonstrator use, registration status, import route, end-of-year campaign, exchange incentive or another reason. The explanation does not prove the car is good or bad. It gives you a testable description that can be checked against the vehicle, mileage, documents and warranty terms. A discount alone is not evidence of an unlawful sale; inconsistent identities, missing paperwork or changing fees are more meaningful warning signs.

Use the VIN as the anchor
Before signing off on delivery, compare the vehicle identification number on the car with the VIN on the order, contract, invoice, warranty certificate and import paperwork. Check all visible VIN locations and confirm that the characters are legible and consistent. Do not accept a substituted vehicle because it has the same color or equipment.
For a used, demonstrator or privately imported sedan, record the odometer reading and photograph the VIN, exterior, interior, tires, warning messages and any existing damage. Ask the seller to disclose prior registration, accident, flood, fire, repair or commercial-use history in writing. If the answer is “not known,” treat that as an unresolved risk rather than as a clean history.

Verify trim and equipment line by line
Compare the written configuration with the actual car: engine or motor specification, drivetrain, battery size where applicable, safety systems, lighting, seats, infotainment, charging equipment, keys, wheels, tires and included accessories. China’s sales rules require the configuration description to match the vehicle delivered. If an option is missing, record it before acceptance and obtain a written remedy or price adjustment.
Collect the required China-market documents
For a household vehicle sold in mainland China, the enumerated delivery documents include the relevant vehicle-conformity or import papers, a Chinese-language user manual, warranty and maintenance manuals, and the Three Guarantees certificate. Imported vehicles sold in China require the specified import and inspection documents. Ask for the originals or officially issued documents where appropriate, and check that the VIN, model and seller details match.

3. Read the vehicle-specific warranty and Three Guarantees terms
Start with the certificate, not the headline
Inspect the warranty certificate for the VIN, sale date, delivery date, coverage period, mileage or use limits, covered components, exclusions and the method for locating an authorized repair point. Ask who will honor the warranty if the seller is an independent importer, and obtain that answer in writing. A headline such as “factory warranty” is incomplete unless you know which entity accepts the claim and where the work can be performed.
Check conditions that can change the promise
Confirm whether coverage depends on owner status, geographic region, software activation, scheduled servicing, approved fluids, specified parts or maintenance records. Ask whether servicing at a non-franchise workshop affects coverage, and request the exact written clause rather than a verbal assurance. If the discount is conditional on declining a service package or using a particular workshop, write that condition into the contract and warranty file.

Understand the scope of Three Guarantees protection
China’s Regulations on Responsibility for Repair, Replacement and Return of Household Automotive Products establish protections for qualifying household vehicles sold in China. The regulation was published by the State Administration for Market Regulation and took effect on 1 January 2022; read the official text. The legal periods and remedies are conditional, and the exact certificate, vehicle category, defect and service history determine what applies. Do not transfer a threshold from a generic advertisement or another model to the sedan you are buying.

Keep every maintenance invoice and job card. If the seller cannot identify a repair network or refuses to provide the certificate, the discount is not compensating you for a clearly defined warranty risk; it is leaving the risk unpriced.
4. Check recall status with the 17-character VIN
Run the official query
Use China’s official defect-vehicle recall query and enter the sedan’s 17-character VIN. The live service describes recall information for vehicles from 2014 onward. Search close to handover because listings can change. The query is available at SAMR’s recall search; recall announcements and related service information are also listed by SAMR at its defect-product recall page.
Resolve an open campaign before acceptance
Ask the seller to provide documentation showing that every applicable recall repair has been completed. If a campaign is open, obtain the repair location, parts availability, estimated completion date and confirmation of who will pay. Arrange completion before handover where possible. If the seller says the vehicle is unaffected but will not provide the VIN or a record, you cannot independently verify that statement.
Know what a recall check does not prove
A clear search result does not certify accident history, mechanical condition, legal registration, warranty eligibility or the quality of previous repairs. It answers a narrower question: whether the VIN appears in the recall information available through that service. The regulator’s consumer guidance at SAMR’s recall user guide also explains reporting suspected defects and participating in recall repairs.

5. Clarify parts, maintenance and workshop arrangements
Get the part category and provenance
If the discount includes non-original parts or servicing outside a franchise network, ask exactly what will be fitted. China’s rules require parts to be identified as original, equivalent quality, remanufactured or reused, with the supplier, production date and applicable model information disclosed. The relevant recall-management regulation is available from the Ministry of Justice.
Ask for the proposed parts list, manufacturer or supplier, part numbers, production dates where applicable, labor rate, warranty on the work and the workshop’s legal name. “OEM quality” without a category, supplier or part number is not enough to compare the offer.
Separate maintenance coverage from vehicle warranty
A prepaid service package, free oil changes or discounted labor is a commercial benefit, not automatically the same as a vehicle warranty or Three Guarantees remedy. Check its duration, mileage limit, transferability, eligible services and expiration date. Confirm whether missed appointments, a change of owner or servicing elsewhere cancels it.
Ask what happens if the workshop disappears
For an independent or non-franchise seller, identify the party that remains responsible if the workshop closes or stops handling the brand. Obtain a written repair-location list and a claims contact. The practical value of a warranty depends on access to a functioning network, not only on the length printed in an advertisement.
6. Add an independent pre-purchase inspection when condition is uncertain
For a used, demonstrator, repaired or privately imported sedan, an independent inspection can add evidence about body repairs, paint thickness, underbody damage, tires, brakes, suspension, fluid leaks, diagnostic fault codes, battery condition where applicable and the operation of safety systems. Ask the inspector to provide photographs, measured results and a list of defects ranked by urgency and cost.

An inspection is not a substitute for the contract, import papers, VIN recall search or warranty certificate. It cannot by itself confirm legal registration, prove that a recall repair was completed or make an unauthorized seller responsible for a warranty. Use it to decide whether the physical condition matches the price and the seller’s written description.
7. Compare two discounted offers on evidence, not percentages
When you have two real cars, use the same worksheet for both. A sedan with a smaller discount may be the stronger purchase if it has a clear seller, complete documents, usable warranty coverage and no unresolved recall or condition issue.

No verified benchmark in the available official material establishes a normal discount, depreciation curve, reliability ranking or ownership cost for an unspecified Chinese luxury sedan. A meaningful financial comparison requires the exact model, model year, condition, market, registration status and comparable written offers.

8. Red flags that justify delaying payment
- The seller will not provide a VIN before taking a non-refundable deposit.
- The contract, invoice, bank account and showroom name belong to different entities without a written explanation.
- The advertised price excludes fees that appear only after you commit.
- The trim or mileage on the physical car differs from the order or contract.
- Required import, conformity, Chinese-language manual, warranty, maintenance or Three Guarantees documents are missing or show a different VIN.
- The seller describes a “factory warranty” but cannot name the warranty provider or repair locations.
- An open recall is dismissed without a repair record or completion plan.
- Parts are described only as “equivalent” or “original quality” without category, supplier or model information.
- The seller pressures you to sign a blank delivery record, waive inspection or accept verbal corrections.
None of these points alone proves fraud, but each leaves a material fact unverified. Pause the transaction until the discrepancy is corrected in writing or walk away.
9. Use this handover sequence
- Reconfirm the vehicle. Photograph the VIN, odometer, exterior, interior, tires, keys and warning lights. Match the VIN and equipment with the contract.
- Recheck the recall. Run the 17-character VIN through the official query close to delivery and obtain records for completed campaigns.
- Review documents. Check the invoice, contract, conformity or import papers, Chinese manual, warranty and maintenance manuals and Three Guarantees certificate where applicable.
- Test the car. Start it from cold if possible, scan for warning messages, operate safety and comfort systems, and confirm that promised accessories are present.
- Record defects. Write every scratch, missing item, warning or document discrepancy on the delivery record. Do not sign that the vehicle is defect-free if it is not.
- Confirm after-sales contacts. Save the warranty provider, workshop addresses, claims telephone number and escalation contact.
- Release the balance only under the agreed terms. Obtain the final invoice and a signed delivery record showing the vehicle’s condition and the documents handed over.
10. A practical go/no-go decision
Proceed only when the complete price is fixed in writing, the contracting and responsible parties are identifiable, the VIN-matched vehicle and documents are present, the warranty and repair network are usable, and the recall search and physical inspection reveal no unresolved issue that the seller will not address.
Renegotiate when the car is acceptable but a measurable item is missing, such as an accessory, service benefit or documented repair. Put the remedy, deadline and responsible party in the contract. Walk away when the seller refuses to identify responsibility, withholds the VIN, changes the price, cannot produce core documents or asks you to accept an unresolved recall or material condition discrepancy.
