What to Check Before Buying a Chinese Electric Car in Europe (2026 Buyer’s Checklist)

A practical, document-first checklist for buying a Chinese-manufactured electric car in Europe, covering registration, EU approval, warranty, service, charging, safety, customs treatment and ownership costs.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy on country of origin alone. Before signing, verify the exact car’s manufacturing country, exporter, EU approval documents, registration path, written local warranty, repair arrangements, charging compatibility, independent safety evidence, recall status and complete ownership cost. A brand’s Chinese association does not tell you whether a particular vehicle can be registered, supported or economically run in your country.

The checks below are designed for a specific vehicle identification number (VIN), model year and trim. Ask the seller for written answers and keep the documents with your purchase contract. Rules, prices and importer arrangements can change, so date every quote and confirmation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the exact vehicle, not the badge

“Chinese electric car” is an origin description, not a quality, safety or service classification. A company may be headquartered in one country while a particular car is built elsewhere, and two cars sold under the same badge can have different approval routes, batteries, software, connectors and warranty terms. Your first task is to identify the vehicle precisely enough that every later answer refers to the same car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request a written vehicle identity sheet

  • Full VIN, or the VIN of the demonstrator or stock vehicle you will actually receive.
  • Exact model name, model year, body style, battery version, motor configuration and trim.
  • Country of manufacture and, where available, the factory or production line.
  • Legal manufacturer, EU importer and seller’s registered legal name and address.
  • New, demonstrator, parallel-import or used status, including first-registration date.
  • Written on-road price showing vehicle price, VAT, registration charges, delivery, options and any customs-related amounts.

Do not accept a salesperson’s statement that a car is “European” because the brand has a European office. Match the VIN, country of manufacture and importer details across the purchase order, certificate of conformity, warranty booklet and invoice. If any document names a different variant, stop and ask for a corrected document before paying a deposit.

Check origin, exporter and the current trade treatment

EU trade measures apply according to legal scope, vehicle origin and exporter details. They are not a single surcharge applied to every vehicle associated with China. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754 covers specified new passenger battery-electric vehicles originating in China and identifies exporter groups. Whether it applies to your car depends on the regulation’s scope and the exporter recorded for that shipment.

Use current figures, not old provisional headlines

The definitive countervailing measures described in current Commission guidance range from 7.8% to 35.3%, depending on the applicable exporter category. These are customs measures, not a guaranteed percentage added to the retail price. They may be absorbed by an importer, reflected in a negotiated price, or handled through another lawful arrangement. The Commission issued guidance on 12 January 2026 about possible price-undertaking offers. That guidance discusses elements such as a minimum import price, sales channels, cross-compensation and future investment; it does not prove that a particular seller’s offer has been accepted.

Ask the seller or importer to state, in writing, whether the quoted vehicle is covered by a current measure, which exporter category applies, who pays any duty, and whether the price is conditional on customs clearance. Do not use provisional 2024 rates as if they were current definitive rates. A dated quote should state how long it remains valid and what happens if customs treatment changes before delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to put in the order paperwork

  1. What country of origin is declared for this VIN and shipment?
  2. Which legal entity exports the vehicle to the EU?
  3. Is the displayed price inclusive of all import, customs, VAT, delivery and registration amounts?
  4. Can the seller change the price after a duty, price undertaking or customs decision changes?
  5. Who is responsible if the vehicle is held because its origin or approval documents are incomplete?

Have an independent customs adviser or your national consumer authority review an unusual parallel-import arrangement. A low advertised price is not useful if registration, tax or delivery costs are excluded.

Prove that you can register the exact car

Registration is a country-level process. EU type-approval rules provide the technical framework, but your national registration authority decides which forms, taxes, inspections and translations it requires. Ask the authority or an authorised registration agent about the exact VIN and approval route before committing money.

Certificate of conformity and approval route

Request the EU certificate of conformity (CoC), or written evidence of the approval route if the car is an individual-approval or small-series vehicle. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/858, a vehicle manufactured in conformity with an approved type is accompanied by a certificate of conformity. The CoC must correspond to the VIN, model variant, masses, emissions or energy data, safety equipment and wheel or tyre specifications of the car you will receive.

From 5 July 2026, the regulation provides for an electronic structured certificate process and, under its stated conditions, an exemption from the paper-certificate requirement. That does not mean every buyer must receive a paper CoC in every circumstance, nor does it remove the need to obtain the data your registration authority requires. Ask whether your authority can retrieve the electronic certificate and request a copy or reference number for your records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the CoC to local registration requirements

  • Confirm the issuing approval authority and approval number.
  • Check that the VIN on the CoC matches the dashboard, windscreen plate and purchase contract.
  • Verify that the listed dimensions, axle loads, power, battery or fuel data and tyre sizes match the advertised trim.
  • Ask whether the car needs a national inspection, translation, conformity check or individual approval.
  • Confirm registration tax, annual circulation tax, incentive eligibility and insurance requirements in your country.
  • Get a written answer about right-hand-drive or left-hand-drive restrictions if the vehicle was imported from another market.

A seller who says “all EU cars register automatically” without identifying the approval route is not giving you a usable answer. Make the contract conditional on successful registration if local law permits, and specify who pays for remedial work if the authority rejects the paperwork.

Read the warranty and service promise before you pay

A long headline warranty is not the same as a local repair obligation. The responsible company may be the manufacturer, importer, dealer or a separate warranty administrator. Obtain the complete warranty booklet for your country and exact trim, not a brochure from another market.

Warranty items to confirm in writing

  • Who accepts a claim and where the vehicle must be presented.
  • Coverage duration and mileage limits for the whole vehicle, traction battery, battery-management system, motor, inverter, onboard charger and high-voltage cables.
  • Battery-capacity threshold, testing method and remedy if capacity falls below it.
  • Exclusions for charging, accidents, modifications, software, corrosion, wear items and use outside the approved market.
  • Whether coverage transfers to a second owner and whether servicing must be performed at specified intervals or locations.
  • Roadside assistance area, towing destination, hotel or mobility allowance and loan-car terms.
  • Claim deadlines, required maintenance records, dispute procedure and governing country.

Do not infer poor support from Chinese origin, and do not infer excellent support from a generous duration. Current warranty terms, parts availability and authorised workshop coverage vary by model, country and importer. The document applicable to your purchase is the evidence that matters.

Test the repair pathway

Before signing, call the nearest listed authorised workshop and ask whether it accepts this VIN and high-voltage system. Ask where body repairs, battery diagnostics and software faults are handled. Get estimated parts lead times for a windscreen, headlamp, charging module, drive unit and battery component. Ask whether parts are stocked in the EU or ordered from outside it, and who pays storage or transport while a claim is assessed.

Ask how software and security updates are delivered, how long support is promised, and whether essential functions depend on a cloud account, phone app or a server located outside your country. Confirm what happens if the app is discontinued, the vehicle changes owner, mobile coverage is unavailable or the manufacturer’s online service is interrupted. Have the seller demonstrate account transfer and deletion of the previous owner’s data.

Make charging work at home and on your normal routes

Charging compatibility is a specification question, not a marketing assumption. Obtain the exact AC and DC charging limits, connector type, charging curve information if available, battery-preconditioning behaviour, scheduled-charging controls and included cables. Compare those details with your home supply and the public chargers you actually use.

Vehicle checks

  • Connector type for AC and DC, including any adapter restrictions.
  • Maximum AC power and whether three-phase charging is supported.
  • Maximum DC power, realistic charging time over your usual state-of-charge range and any temperature limits.
  • Whether battery preconditioning can be started manually or only through navigation.
  • Whether a portable charging cable, wall-mounted cable or both are included.
  • Charging timers, departure-time settings, charge-current limits and interruption recovery.
  • Support for bidirectional functions only if the exact trim, charger and local regulations permit them.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 establishes a common framework for alternative-fuels infrastructure and charging connectors. It does not tell you which cable is in the boot, how fast this vehicle will charge, whether a public site accepts your payment method, or whether your home electrical installation can support the chosen power. A Type 2 cable can be a sensible accessory when the car and charger require it, but verify connector, rated current, charging mode and included accessories before buying one.

Home-charging due diligence

  1. Give an electrician the vehicle’s maximum AC rate, your supply type, cable route and parking arrangement.
  2. Obtain a written installation quote covering protection devices, trenching, load management, permits and inspection.
  3. Check whether your electricity connection can deliver the requested power without nuisance trips.
  4. Confirm the charger’s connector and communication mode match the car.
  5. Ask how firmware updates, warranty service and emergency isolation are handled.

Do not assume a domestic socket is suitable for regular high-current charging. Use the electrician’s assessment and your insurer’s requirements. For public charging, map ordinary routes and verify roaming, payment methods, subscription conditions, idle fees, opening hours and the provider’s process for reporting an out-of-service unit. Coverage and prices differ by country and change over time; obtain current local information.

Check independent safety evidence and recalls

EU type approval is a legal entry requirement, not a comparative crash-test score. Compare independent test results for the same generation, body style, battery layout and relevant trim. A result for a different market specification or an older model year may not describe the car in front of you.

Safety questions for the seller

  • Which driver-assistance and passive-safety features are standard on this VIN?
  • Are functions such as automatic emergency braking, lane assistance, blind-spot monitoring and speed assistance included or optional?
  • Can any feature be disabled permanently, and does its behaviour change after software updates?
  • Has the vehicle been subject to a recall, field campaign or software corrective action?
  • Will the seller search outstanding actions by VIN and provide written confirmation that they are complete?

Regulation (EU) 2018/858 provides corrective-action and recall mechanisms where a vehicle is not in conformity or presents a serious risk. A corrective action can involve bringing a vehicle into conformity, withdrawal or recall. That framework does not prove that servicing is convenient or that a particular car achieved a high independent crash-test rating. Check official recall notices and request a VIN-specific search before delivery.

The European Commission announced proposed inspection changes on 24 April 2025, including adaptations for electric vehicles and checks of electronic safety systems. An announcement of proposals is not evidence that those requirements are already law. Confirm the current inspection rules in your country rather than budgeting or modifying the car on the basis of a proposal.

Calculate the cost beyond the advertised price

Build a dated, country-specific ownership worksheet. Use a cash price and a separate finance comparison so a low monthly payment does not conceal a high total cost.

Cost area What to obtain Why it can change the decision
Purchase and delivery Signed on-road quote including VAT, customs treatment, transport, options and registration charges An apparently cheap import may exclude unavoidable costs or leave duty risk with you
Insurance Quotes for the exact VIN, trim, power and driver profile Repair networks, parts prices and battery risk can affect premiums
Home charging Electrician’s survey and written installation quote Service upgrades, protection equipment and cable runs can outweigh a headline charger price
Energy Consumption estimate, tariff, charging losses and public-charging fees Public fast charging or a high tariff can materially change running cost
Maintenance and tyres Service schedule, labour rates, consumables and tyre sizes Specialist parts or uncommon tyre dimensions may increase downtime and expense
Taxes and incentives Current national and local rules for this exact vehicle Eligibility may depend on price, emissions data, origin, list price or registration date
Software and subscriptions Price and duration of connected services, navigation, remote controls and data plans Features advertised at purchase may become paid services later
Exit value Finance balloon, lease return rules, dealer buy-back terms and comparable local listings Uncertain parts, updates or importer continuity can affect resale and refinancing

No reliable model-specific insurance, energy, maintenance or resale figures can be assumed without your country, driver profile, tariff, mileage and exact trim. Use local written quotes rather than a generic internet calculator.

Compare candidate cars on like-for-like evidence

If you are choosing between two or more vehicles, use the same worksheet and date every answer. Do not compare a fully equipped imported trim with a base version sold through an established local channel.

Decision axis Evidence to compare Minimum acceptable record
Registration certainty VIN-matched CoC or approval route, importer identity and authority confirmation Written route with no unresolved document mismatch
Warranty and repairs Local warranty booklet, workshop address, roadside terms and parts process Named responsible entity and usable claim route in your country
Safety Independent result for the same generation and VIN-relevant equipment; recall search Evidence that matches the purchased specification
Charging AC/DC limits, connector, cable contents, home survey and route testing Compatible home setup and practical public-charging plan
Total cost On-road price, insurance, installation, energy, maintenance, taxes and finance Dated local quotes for your expected mileage
Software support Update commitment, app dependence, account transfer and subscription terms Written support period and recovery path if services fail
Exit options Lease or finance conditions, dealer buy-back and likely resale constraints No hidden early-termination or export restrictions

Where a value is not established, record “not stated” and treat that uncertainty as a decision factor. Do not fill gaps with a brand reputation or a forum anecdote.

Follow this pre-signing sequence

  1. Identify the car. Record VIN, model year, trim, battery, motor, manufacturing country, importer and seller’s legal identity.
  2. Secure the documents. Obtain the CoC or approval route, warranty booklet, service directory, charging specification and recall confirmation.
  3. Confirm registration. Send the VIN and documents to your national authority or authorised registration agent and obtain written requirements.
  4. Price the transaction. Get a dated on-road quote that explains origin, exporter, customs treatment, VAT, delivery and registration charges.
  5. Validate support. Call the named workshop, ask about VIN acceptance, parts and high-voltage repairs, and test the warranty contact route.
  6. Test charging. If possible, charge the car on your intended home equipment and at a representative public charger; verify cable contents and payment access.
  7. Check safety. Match independent test evidence and equipment to the exact generation and obtain a VIN recall search.
  8. Model ownership. Add insurance, installation, energy, maintenance, tyres, taxes, subscriptions, finance and exit costs.
  9. Write protections into the contract. Specify delivery date, registration responsibility, included equipment, warranty entity, price validity and remedies for document or approval failure.
  10. Pay only after unresolved issues are closed. Keep copies of every promise, including emails, attachments and screenshots of specifications.

Red flags that should pause the purchase

  • The seller will not provide a VIN or exact trim before taking a non-refundable deposit.
  • The CoC, invoice and warranty name different legal entities or different vehicle variants.
  • Registration is described as “your problem” while the seller advertises EU road legality.
  • The price is conditional on unknown customs treatment or excludes VAT and delivery.
  • No local workshop can confirm that it handles the vehicle’s high-voltage system.
  • Parts, battery coverage or software support are promised verbally but absent from the contract.
  • Charging speed is quoted as a peak number with no AC limit, connector or operating conditions.
  • The seller cannot provide an independent safety result or VIN-specific recall status.
  • The app, remote access or navigation is essential but the account-transfer and service-termination rules are unclear.

If a problem appears after signing, notify the seller in writing, preserve the vehicle and diagnostic records, and contact your national consumer-protection or registration authority. Do not authorise high-voltage repairs by an unqualified workshop merely to keep the car moving; follow the warranty and safety instructions supplied for the vehicle.

What to put in your final decision

Proceed only when you can answer four practical questions with documents: Can I register this exact car in my country? Is the warranty valid where I live and who performs the repair? Can it charge on my home setup and normal public routes? What will it cost me to own and later sell? Country of manufacture may explain a trade measure or import route, but it cannot answer those questions by itself. A transparent seller with matching documents, a clear local repair path and tested charging compatibility is a stronger basis for purchase than a low price or a long specification list.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
