Do not buy a steer-by-wire car on the strength of a badge, brochure, or platform relationship. Verify the feature on the exact VIN and market, read the matching owner’s manual, drive the car with every regular driver, and get written answers about fault warnings, warranty coverage, repairs, parts, and local service capability. If the seller cannot document those points, pause the purchase.
What steer-by-wire changes
In a conventional steering system, the steering wheel is mechanically connected to the road wheels. Steer-by-wire transmits the driver’s steering input electronically instead. Lexus describes the new RZ system as having no mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels: The new system differs fundamentally from a conventional steering system in having no mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels.

Lexus also describes steering response that varies with vehicle speed: easier maneuvering at low speed, quicker response on winding roads, and greater stability at motorway speeds. Those are Lexus’s engineering and performance descriptions, not results from an independent road test. Your buying decision should therefore separate two questions: whether the system is fitted and supported on the vehicle you are considering, and whether its steering feel suits you.

1. Verify steer-by-wire on the exact vehicle
Equipment can vary by model year, production period, trim, sales market, and VIN. Start with documentary proof rather than an assumption based on the model family.
Request these records
- VIN equipment record: Ask the seller or an authorized dealer for the factory equipment record tied to the VIN. A general specification sheet for the model line is not enough.
- Original build specification: Confirm whether steer-by-wire was standard, optional, or unavailable on that exact trim and production version.
- Production date and model year: Record both. A vehicle built near a model-year or engineering change can differ from an earlier or later example carrying a similar name.
- Sales market: Identify the country in which the car was originally sold. Imported vehicles may have different equipment, manuals, approval documentation, warranty terms, and service arrangements.
- Matching owner’s manual: Use the manual for the vehicle’s production period and designation, not a brochure or a manual for a different year.
- New or used status: For a used car, ask for the VIN-specific service and campaign history as well as the original equipment information.
The official Lexus RZ owner’s-manual index separates documentation by production period and model designation. That structure is a practical warning against saying that every RZ, in every market and year, has the same steering system.
Do not infer equipment from corporate relationships
A shared platform, a relationship between manufacturers, or a feature shown in another market’s press material does not prove that the car in front of you has steer-by-wire. The 2024 Toyota bZ4X main owner’s manual reviewed for this topic does not establish that every United States 2024 bZ4X has steer-by-wire. The correct conclusion is to verify a specific vehicle, not to generalize across all bZ4X versions or markets. Use the 2024 bZ4X manuals and warranties portal only for the exact model documentation it identifies.

Evidence that is strong enough to rely on
The strongest combination is a VIN equipment record, the original build specification, and an owner’s manual whose model designation and production period match the car. If those documents conflict, ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer to resolve the discrepancy in writing before you pay a deposit.
2. Learn whether the steering controls feel natural
The new RZ system has a distinctive steering-wheel movement. Lexus states that a 200-degree turn from neutral is sufficient to reach full left or full right lock. Treat 200 degrees as a Lexus specification for the applicable RZ system, not as a universal steer-by-wire figure or a prediction of comfort in every vehicle.
A short, unusual steering movement can feel effortless to one driver and unfamiliar to another. Test it with the actual car and with every person who will regularly drive it.

Use a supervised, legal test drive
- Begin stationary or at walking speed in a safe area. Turn from straight ahead toward full lock in both directions and notice how much wrist and arm movement is required.
- Park in a normal space. Try entering and leaving a space, including a correction if your first approach is imperfect. Check whether you can make the required steering input smoothly without overcorrecting.
- Perform a low-speed turn. Drive through a junction or similarly controlled turn and assess whether the response is predictable as you unwind the wheel.
- Try a three-point or tight maneuver where legal. This reveals whether the wheel shape and limited travel are comfortable when you need a large change in direction quickly.
- Drive at ordinary road speed. Assess straight-line corrections, lane positioning, and the transition from a turn back to center. Lexus describes speed-dependent steering response, but the release does not establish how that response will feel to you.
- Repeat the route with each regular driver. A steering layout that one buyer likes may not suit another driver’s muscle memory, hand position, or confidence.
- Note every warning message. If any steering warning appears, stop the evaluation safely and use the correct owner’s manual or dealer instructions. Do not assume a warning is harmless.

3. Ask exactly how redundancy and faults are handled
Do not stop at the word redundancy. Ask what is duplicated, how power is maintained, what the driver sees after a fault, and what action the manual requires.

Lexus also says an extra backup power supply is included. These are manufacturer claims about the new RZ system. They should not be converted into a guarantee against failure, and they should not be applied automatically to another model.

4. Establish ownership support before purchase
Steer-by-wire ownership depends on more than how the car feels on a test drive. Obtain written answers from both the seller and a local authorized service center. Keep the replies with the purchase documents.
Warranty and coverage
- Are the steering actuators, control units, sensors, wiring, and backup power components covered by the vehicle warranty?
- Does coverage change for a used vehicle, an imported vehicle, a previous salvage or rebuilt title, or a car first sold in another country?
- Are there mileage, time, diagnostic, or software conditions that affect a claim?
- Will the selling dealer or a local dealer handle a steering-system claim?
Repair process and capability
- Which local facilities have the diagnostic equipment and training required for this system?
- Can the authorized shop diagnose the exact VIN, and what is the escalation route if the first shop cannot resolve a fault?
- How are parts sourced, and what is the normal process if an actuator or control unit must be replaced?
- What transport or towing instruction applies when a steering warning is displayed?
- Are there open recalls, service campaigns, or software updates for the VIN?
Warranty exclusions, repair prices, parts lead times, and the number of trained shops in a particular location are not established by the available sources. Treat each as an unanswered buying question until the regional manufacturer or authorized provider confirms it.
Why imported and used cars need extra scrutiny

5. Use the correct manual and understand the regulatory context
Manufacturer manuals can change between production periods. Open the current manual indexed to the vehicle’s designation and production period, then verify that the steering warnings, controls, and emergency instructions match the car. These conditions do not prove that the vehicle is defective, but they leave material purchase questions unanswered. Delay the transaction until the records and support answers are clear.
