Confirm where it can operate, what the driver must watch, how it warns you, and what happens when it disengages. A name such as “self-driving” or “hands-free” does not by itself establish independent driving capability.
For vehicles covered by NHTSA’s consumer guidance, Levels 0 through 2 remain driver-assistance functions: the driver must stay engaged and attentive. Level 2 can assist with steering and speed at the same time, but the human driver remains responsible. Use the checklist below to verify the car rather than relying on a sales description.

First, determine what “automated driving” means on this car
Manufacturers use different names for similar-sounding functions, and the same package name can change by model year, market, trim or software version. Start with the capability, not the badge. Ask whether the vehicle provides a warning, a momentary intervention, or sustained assistance with steering and speed.

NHTSA describes Levels 0–2 as driver assistance requiring an engaged, attentive driver. A Level 2 display, steering input or hands-free mode does not transfer legal or practical responsibility away from you. If the manual says you must monitor the road or be ready to respond, treat that as a continuous requirement, not a suggestion for occasional checks.

“Self-driving” is language people sometimes use for automated-driving systems, but it is not a reliable description of a consumer vehicle’s capability. Ask the seller to identify the formal system name and its operating conditions, then verify those details in the manual.
Verify the exact car, not just the model name
Two cars with the same model badge can have different assistance hardware, packages, software and permitted functions. Write down the vehicle identification details before comparing systems.
Record the configuration
- Make, model and model year.
- Trim level and body style.
- Every advertised driver-assistance package or option.
- Whether the car is new, used, leased or a demonstration vehicle.
- Any software version, connected-service plan or feature subscription shown in the vehicle or sales documents.
For a used car, compare the equipment list with the actual vehicle. A package may have been optional, changed during a model-year run, disabled in software or absent from the particular car being sold. Ask the seller to show the package name in the vehicle’s settings or build documentation rather than accepting a window-sticker phrase as proof.
Get the model-year owner’s manual
Obtain the manual for the exact model year and configuration. NHTSA advises buyers to read the owner’s manual because manufacturers use different names and procedures. Check the system’s formal name, activation controls, dashboard symbols, driver-monitoring requirements, alerts, disengagement behavior and takeover procedure. If the seller supplies only a generic brochure, treat that as incomplete information.

When a manual covers several trims, locate the passages that specify which functions are fitted to your car. If the manual refers to an optional package, confirm that the package is installed. If the vehicle has received software updates, ask whether those updates changed the system’s name, operating limits, warnings or subscription status.
Map the system’s operating limits
The most important buying question is not “Can it drive?” but “Under exactly what conditions can it assist, and when must I take over?” Build a written list from the manual and have the seller explain anything you cannot find.
Roads and locations
Determine whether the function is intended for certain road types, mapped routes, divided highways, low-speed traffic or other defined environments. Do not infer road coverage from a navigation display or from another vehicle of the same brand. A system that assists on one road may refuse to activate, limit its functions or disengage elsewhere.
Weather, visibility and surroundings
Look for stated limits involving weather, lighting, road markings, construction, unusual traffic patterns or obstructed views. Ask what the vehicle does when those conditions appear. A feature can be unavailable, provide a warning, reduce its assistance or disengage; the manual’s wording controls what you should expect.

Speed and traffic conditions
Record any minimum or maximum speeds, stop-and-go restrictions, following-distance settings and conditions for changing lanes or making other maneuvers. If the system only supports a particular type of road or traffic situation, that restriction should be part of your purchase decision.
Activation and disengagement
Learn the exact control sequence for turning the feature on and off. Ask what cancels it: driver input, a time limit, a road exit, a sensor or camera condition, a warning that is not acknowledged, or another event described in the manual. You need to know what the car will do before you rely on it in traffic.
Understand what the driver must monitor
Partial automation is a supervision task. The system may control steering and speed while you remain responsible for watching the road, recognizing hazards and responding to requests. IIHS’s partial-automation safeguard work highlights driver monitoring and escalating attention alerts as important buying considerations.

How attention is checked
Ask how the car determines that the driver is engaged and what the manual requires. The relevant question is not whether the vehicle can keep itself centered for a period of time, but how it detects inattention and what it does next. Verify:

- What behavior or input the system expects from the driver.
- How an attention alert appears and whether it is visual, audible or tactile.
- Whether alerts escalate if the driver does not respond.
- What happens after an ignored alert, including reduced assistance or a controlled disengagement described in the manual.
- How the driver resumes control after an alert or disengagement.
Do not treat a monitoring alert as permission to look away, use a phone or perform another task. The purpose of the safeguard is to bring your attention back to driving; it is not a replacement for attention.
Takeover requests
Have the seller demonstrate a takeover request in a safe, legal setting and explain the expected response. Find out how much notice the system gives, what the message means, which controls you must operate and whether the system continues to steer or control speed while you respond. The manual’s instructions take priority over a salesperson’s shorthand explanation.
Separate warnings from interventions
NHTSA distinguishes features that warn about a potential crash from features that take action to help avoid one. That distinction matters when you evaluate a package or compare two cars.

Ask the seller to identify each function separately. “The car has autonomous safety” is too vague to evaluate. Have the seller show which menu items produce a warning, which can intervene and which provide sustained assistance.

Questions to ask a dealer or private seller
- Which exact assistance package is installed? Ask for the package name, trim requirement and model-year documentation for this vehicle.
- Which functions are warnings and which intervene? Request a description of the action the car takes and the conditions required for it.
- Can it steer and control speed at the same time? If yes, ask whether the manual classifies that operation as Level 2-style partial automation and what continuous supervision is required.
- Where can it operate? Ask about road types, traffic conditions, speed ranges, weather and construction, then verify the answer in the manual.
- How does it monitor the driver? Ask how attention alerts begin, how they escalate and what happens when the driver does not respond.
- What causes disengagement? Ask for examples and have the seller demonstrate the normal cancel controls.
- What does a takeover request require? Confirm the warning, the expected driver response and the procedure for resuming control.
- Does any function require a subscription or connected service? Ask whether availability depends on an active plan, account, region or software version. Verify commercial terms directly with the manufacturer.
- Has software changed the feature? Ask for update history or current release information and compare it with the manual supplied for the car.
- Can I see the warnings and controls? Have the seller turn on the relevant menus and identify the dashboard indicators without taking the car into an unsafe situation.
How to check a used car
A used-car inspection can reveal the vehicle’s general condition, but the sources reviewed do not establish that a standard mechanical inspection validates automated-driving capability. Treat the assistance system as a separate verification task.
- Match the paperwork to the car. Confirm the model year, trim, installed packages and any software or service information.
- Read the correct manual. Mark the pages covering activation, limits, monitoring, alerts, disengagement and takeover.
- Check the instrument display and settings. Look for warning indicators, unavailable-function messages and the menu entries for the advertised features. Do not clear a warning merely to make the sale appear cleaner.
- Ask about previous alerts or repairs. Have the seller explain any persistent warning and provide relevant service documentation. If the explanation does not match the manual, pause the purchase.
- Request a controlled demonstration. The seller should show the controls and normal notifications in a lawful, safe setting. Do not test limits by intentionally creating a hazard or driving outside the stated operating domain.
- Confirm what remains after transfer. Establish whether a connected account, subscription or software entitlement must be transferred and whether the vehicle will retain the advertised functions for the new owner.
Compare two cars using the same evidence
Marketing names make side-by-side comparisons unreliable. Use one worksheet for every candidate and fill each row from the exact manual and vehicle configuration.

A system with a longer feature list is not automatically the better purchase. A narrowly limited function that you understand and can supervise may suit you better than a broader-sounding system whose road limits, alerts or subscription requirements are unclear.

NHTSA’s Standing General Order requires specified reporting from identified entities and uses different criteria for automated-driving systems and Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems. NHTSA also discusses limitations in that data. Reported counts therefore should not be treated as an unqualified ranking of brands, models or systems.
When a seller or article cites a crash number, ask what was reported, which system category applied, the reporting period, the exposure or circumstances represented, and what the data cannot show. A count alone does not establish how a particular trim will perform in your driving, nor does it prove that a feature prevents crashes.
Red flags that should delay the purchase
- The seller uses “self-driving” but cannot identify the formal system name or automation level.
- The advertised package is not shown in the vehicle’s build information, settings or model-year manual.
- The seller cannot explain supported roads, weather limits, speed conditions or disengagement behavior.
- You are told to keep watching the road only “when necessary,” while the manual requires continuous attention.
- Warnings, interventions and sustained steering-and-speed assistance are described as if they were the same function.
- A warning light or unavailable-function message is dismissed without documentation.
- A software update or subscription is required, but the seller cannot state whether it transfers to you.
- The seller encourages you to test the system by removing your attention from the road or exceeding the stated operating domain.
A final pre-purchase decision checklist
Proceed only when you can answer every item for the exact vehicle:
- What is the system’s formal name and automation level?
- Which functions are installed on this model year, trim and software configuration?
- Does each function warn, intervene, or provide sustained assistance?
- Where and under what environmental, traffic and speed conditions may it operate?
- What must the driver monitor continuously?
- How does the vehicle check attention and escalate alerts?
- What causes disengagement, and what does a takeover request require?
- Are any features dependent on a subscription, account, region or software update?
- For a used car, do the warning indicators, documentation and installed equipment agree?
- Are you comfortable supervising the system within all of those limits?
If any answer is “unknown,” the vehicle’s advertised automation has not been verified. Treat the car as ordinary driver-controlled transportation until the manual and the actual configuration establish what the assistance system can and cannot do.
