A car’s “best-selling” label is not a substitute for checking the exact vehicle you will register. Before paying a booking amount, verify the model year and variant, the safety evidence that actually covers that vehicle, the equipment written into your order, your family’s fit during a test drive, and the documents required by your registering authority. Then match the delivered car, registration file and insurance policy to those written details.
No current, dated sales ranking is established here, so this guide does not name or rank a supposed top seller. Treat popularity as a reason to investigate a candidate, not as proof of safety, value or suitability. For official programme and document details, use the linked government and regulator pages and confirm any state-specific change before delivery.

Start with the job the car must do
Write down the conditions that will determine whether a car works for you. Include the usual number of passengers, whether children will use child seats, the routes you drive most, parking constraints, luggage needs and a realistic purchase and running-cost budget. These answers determine which body size, seating arrangement and equipment you should inspect; they are more useful than a sales label shared across many variants.

- Family-specific: the actual children and child seats that will travel in the car, because a seat that looks roomy in a brochure may not work with your restraint system.

Do not treat “best-selling” as a specification
Sales rankings change by month, quarter, segment and reporting method. A headline may combine several body styles, model generations or fuel versions, while a dealer may advertise the name of a model family even though the displayed car is a higher specification. Because no current, authoritative ranking or period is established for this article, do not infer that a named car is currently India’s best seller or that popularity guarantees a particular price, economy or equipment level.
What to record for every candidate
- Write the manufacturer’s model name exactly as quoted, along with the model year or production description the dealer gives you.
- Record the precise variant or trim, transmission and powertrain description shown on the quotation.
- Save the official equipment list and any safety-rating reference for that exact vehicle, not only a general brochure.
- Ask the dealer to identify which details apply to the displayed car and which apply to the car you would order.
If you need a sales comparison, obtain a dated source that defines its period, segment and methodology. Do not fill a buying decision with an undated “top cars” list.
Check safety evidence for the exact vehicle and variant
Understand what Bharat NCAP does and does not establish
Bharat NCAP is a voluntary assessment programme. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 14 December 2023 release describing rule 126E says the programme covers eligible M1 cars manufactured or imported in India on or after 1 October 2023. The release reproduces the regulatory wording: “Further, BNCAP shall be a voluntary program monitored by the Agency.” Read the current rating for the specific vehicle on the designated official source rather than assuming every car with the same model name has been assessed. A rating is evidence for the tested configuration and the programme’s stated scope. It is not a promise that every variant, model year or later equipment change has identical performance. Ask the dealer to show the rating reference and note the model and variant description attached to it.
Look beyond a star count
Use the rating as one part of a check that also asks what is fitted to the car you will buy. A 2016 Consumers International guide recommends checking safety equipment in the showroom, asking questions when terminology is unclear and confirming that desired features are included in the specification. - Ask which safety features are standard on the precise variant and which require a different specification.
- Ask the salesperson to identify the equipment on the displayed car and explain how it operates.
- Compare the written equipment list with the safety evidence’s tested vehicle description.
- Record any feature that matters to you in the order or quotation, not only in a verbal promise.
If the answer is “available on the model” without a variant identifier, treat it as unresolved. Request a written confirmation before you pay.

Get the ordered specification in writing
Advertisements and showroom displays are useful for finding candidates, but the signed order must state what you are buying. Ask for an itemised quotation and a variant-level equipment description. The written document should make it possible to compare the car you selected with the car delivered.

Keep the quotation, equipment sheet and any written clarification together. At handover, use them to check that the delivered car matches what you ordered.
Use the showroom visit and test drive as a fit test
Set up the driver’s position
Before moving, adjust the seat, steering wheel and head restraint. Check that you can reach the controls without losing a stable posture, that the instrument display is readable from your normal position and that the head restraint can be set correctly for you. Try the adjustments yourself; a salesperson’s preferred position may not suit your height or reach.
Check all-round visibility
Look through the windscreen, side windows and rear window from the adjusted position. Check whether pillars, mirrors or bodywork create blind areas that matter when parking, changing lanes or joining traffic. Move the mirrors as you would for daily driving and confirm that the view remains usable after another driver changes the seat.
Include every regular passenger
Passengers should sit in their normal places while you check comfort and access. If children will travel in the car, take the children and their child seats to the showroom or test drive. Fit the seats as you normally would and check that the arrangement works with the available seating positions. A child seat is a conditional fit check, not an assumption that one accessory works in every car.

Ask for an explanation, not a demonstration you cannot repeat
When terminology or a warning system is unclear, ask the dealer to explain it and then operate the relevant control yourself. Note what is standard on the ordered variant and what is shown only because the display car has a different specification. If the answer changes between staff members, request written clarification.

Drive the routes that matter
Use a route that includes the manoeuvres you perform regularly, such as tight parking, urban turns and the type of road used for commuting. The purpose is not to create a performance score; it is to establish whether your seating position, visibility, controls and passenger arrangement remain workable when the car is moving.
Ask for an itemised quotation before committing
An itemised written quotation lets you distinguish the vehicle and variant from registration, insurance and other charges. This guide does not establish a current fee schedule or a universal dealer quotation rule, so ask the dealer to identify each amount and confirm which items are estimates, one-time charges or services arranged on your behalf.
- Check that the model, variant and requested equipment in the quotation match your written specification.
- Ask who is responsible for each registration document and when you will receive it.
- Ask for the proposed insurance policy documents before accepting the cover.
- Keep a dated copy of every revision so a changed variant or charge is visible.
Prepare the registration file
Documents commonly listed for permanent registration
Parivahan Sewa’s Permanent Registration page lists Form 20, Form 21, Form 22, valid insurance, address proof and the vehicle invoice among registration documents. The page also indicates that requirements can depend on the applicable authority. Confirm the local process
Some listed requirements vary by state, and processes can change. Ask the dealer which registering authority will process the application, which documents you must sign, and which originals or copies you will receive. Verify the answer with that authority rather than assuming a checklist from another state applies to you.
Check the registration details before use
Before driving on public roads, confirm that the registration application and insurance information use the same owner and address details. Resolve spelling, address or identity mismatches immediately; correcting a document after registration can be more difficult than correcting it before submission.
Choose insurance by wording, not by a low headline premium
Understand the mandatory part
IRDAI states that third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles on public roads. It also says the registration and insurance should be in the same name and address. Compare like-for-like cover
Policies are not equivalent merely because they are called motor insurance. Compare the policy wording, exclusions, deductibles and add-ons that affect your needs. Ask what is covered, what is excluded and what you must pay in a claim. A premium comparison is meaningful only when the insured vehicle, owner details, cover limits and selected add-ons are the same.

- Check the vehicle description and policy period.
- Read exclusions and deductibles rather than relying on a summary screen.
- Keep the policy schedule and wording with the registration papers.

At delivery, reconcile the car with the paperwork
Bring your signed quotation, variant equipment sheet and insurance documents to handover. Compare the delivered vehicle’s model and variant description with the order, and ask the dealer to identify any difference before you accept it. Confirm that the registration and insurance paperwork carries the same owner and address information and that the documents promised for registration are present.
- Read the vehicle and variant description on the final invoice and registration papers.
- Compare the visible equipment and controls with the written specification you approved.
- Check that the insurance certificate identifies the same owner, address and vehicle.
- Collect copies of the registration documents and forms the dealer says it submitted or supplied.
- Record unresolved discrepancies in writing and ask how they will be corrected.

Verify the seller and vehicle documents
Match the seller’s identity and the vehicle details against the registration certificate and insurance certificate. Ask to see the original documents or the official records the registering authority accepts, and ensure the seller’s details are consistent before money changes hands.
Use the normal sale-transfer forms
Parivahan identifies Forms 29 and 30 for a normal sale transfer and lists the registration and insurance certificates among supporting documents. Use official services, and know their limits
Government vehicle-information and registration services may help you check records and procedures. Do not skip condition checks simply because the papers look right
The official sources cited here establish document and transfer steps, not a mechanical-inspection protocol, service-history standard, accident-history database or fair-price method. Treat those as separate questions. Arrange a competent inspection and review whatever maintenance and damage evidence is available, but do not present an unverified checklist or database as an official finding. A clean transfer file does not by itself establish the car’s mechanical condition.
A simple decision gate before you pay
Use these gates in order. If a gate fails, pause rather than compensating with a discount or a popularity claim.

Buying the display car’s equipment by implication
Fix: ask which features are fitted to the ordered car and obtain written confirmation in the quotation or equipment sheet.
Testing the car alone
Fix: bring regular passengers and child seats, then check the real seating arrangement and visibility.
Using a registration checklist from another state
Fix: start with Parivahan’s Forms 20, 21 and 22, insurance, address proof and invoice, then confirm additions or changes with your local registering authority.
