A convertible Falcon is a unibody car: rust, collision distortion, cracked seams, and poor repairs can affect safety, alignment, and restoration cost. Then verify the top and its weather sealing, evaluate the engine, transmission, brakes, steering, and suspension from a cold start and road test, and document whether claimed Sprint or V-8 equipment is factory-correct or a later conversion.
For a purchase decision, hire a classic-Ford specialist to inspect the car in person. Seller descriptions, badges, a running engine, and a functioning roof do not prove identity, originality, structural soundness, or water tightness.

1. Confirm the car’s identity before judging its condition
Ask for the title, current registration, prior invoices, restoration photographs, and receipts for engine, transmission, body, and top work. Compare the identifying information on the vehicle with the documents, and have a specialist verify the claimed year, body style, trim, and drivetrain. Record every non-original component rather than assuming that a 1963-looking car left the factory in its present form.
Use period material and marque expertise
A 1963 sales brochure helps establish which body styles, engines, transmissions, and equipment were offered when new. It is sales literature, however, and cannot authenticate an individual surviving car. The Falcon Club of America technical library indexes a resource titled “1963 Falcon Sprint Identification.” The index confirms that model-specific identification material exists, but it does not itself provide a complete decoding chart. Ask an expert to interpret the car’s identification markings and paperwork rather than relying on a badge or an online claim.

Treat “Sprint” and “V-8” as questions to verify
“Sprint,” “V-8,” and “factory equipped” are verification tasks, not conclusions. A later engine swap, transmission change, reproduction trim, or re-bodied car can look convincing. If originality matters to you, request a written assessment that distinguishes documented factory configuration from later modification before you negotiate a price.
2. Put the unibody structure and rust first
Arrange the inspection on a lift with the car clean enough to see the metal. Cosmetic defects are usually easier to budget than hidden structural corrosion. Look for perforation, heavy scale, swelling seams, fresh undercoating, mismatched metal thickness, non-factory welds, ripples, cracks, and paint or sealer that stops abruptly at a repair.
Areas that deserve a complete inspection
- Front structural areas and torque-box zones: inspect behind both front tires, including seams, drain paths, jacking points, and evidence that corrosion or collision damage has been cut out and replaced.
- Rockers: check the outer rocker, inner structure, ends, and the transition into the floor. A smooth exterior can conceal thinning or patch plates inside.
- Floors: inspect front and rear footwells, seat-mount areas, floor braces, and the metal beneath carpets and sound deadener.
- Trunk and rear structure: examine the spare-tire well, trunk floor, rear body seams, extensions, and the area where water may collect.
- Suspension attachment points: look around front and rear mounting areas for cracks, elongated holes, crushed metal, repairs, or rust that could change alignment.
- Convertible-specific transitions: compare both sides of the body for sag, uneven door gaps, cracked paint at seams, and distortion around the windshield frame and door openings.
Use an inspection mirror and flashlight to see around boxed sections. A magnet can help find filler or non-steel repairs, but it cannot establish metal thickness or weld quality. Probe only with the seller’s permission, and never treat a tool check as a substitute for a qualified structural inspection.

Why a convertible merits extra scrutiny
The Falcon Club technical material covers rust repair, frame dimensions, rust-damage repair, and body repair. A Ford engineering report reproduced in a May 2022 Falcon Club of America publication describes torque boxes behind the front tires and states that the sedan unibody is stronger than the hardtop and convertible in the comparison discussed there. That does not make every convertible defective; it means the actual car’s metal, repairs, and alignment deserve priority. A lift inspection is the practical way to establish that condition.

How to judge old repairs
Good restoration work should leave consistent metal thickness, properly finished welds, correct seams, and drainage paths that still function. Be cautious of overlapping plates, short stitch welds over rust, expanding foam, thick seam sealer, tar-like undercoating, and panels that are smooth only because filler hides a distorted foundation. Compare left and right sides and photograph every repair. Ask for images taken before paint; a seller who can document metal replacement gives you more useful evidence than one who can only describe a recent respray.
3. Operate the convertible top through its entire cycle
Ask the seller to start with the top fully raised, then demonstrate lowering and raising it without assistance. Watch the complete movement, not just whether it eventually reaches the end positions.
What to observe during operation
- Binding, hesitation, uneven movement, excessive noise, or a frame that twists as it folds.
- Damaged bows, bent linkage, loose fasteners, improvised brackets, or wiring and hydraulic repairs that are not documented.
- Header alignment with the windshield frame and even contact along both sides.
- Whether the folded top clears its compartment without crushing the fabric or rear window.
Inspect the material and seals
Examine the fabric for brittleness, tears, stretched seams, fading that indicates age, and patches. Check the rear window for clouding, cracks, loose attachment, and leaks at its perimeter. Inspect the header seal, side seals, beltline seals, and the junctions where the top meets the body. Look for water stains, damp carpet, rust under the front and rear floor coverings, and moisture or corrosion in the trunk. A top that moves under its own power is not necessarily watertight or correctly aligned.

4. Evaluate the mechanical systems from cold start to road test
Insist on a cold start
Ask the seller not to warm the car before you arrive. From cold, observe cranking speed, oil-pressure behavior if a gauge is fitted, choke operation, idle quality, smoke, rattles, exhaust leaks, fuel leaks, charging output, and signs of overheating. Look for fresh fluid under the engine and transmission, coolant staining, oil around seals, and wiring repairs that are unsupported by invoices.
Road-test every control
On a road test, assess clutch engagement or automatic-transmission shifts, gear selection, steering play, brake-pedal feel, braking in a straight line, suspension noises, vibration, driveline clunks, and stable operating temperature. Check that the car tracks without constant correction and that the steering returns after a turn. Verify that the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, wipers, gauges, heater controls, parking brake, tires, and seat belts are present and serviceable for the way you intend to use the car.
Use the period manual correctly
A 1960–63 Ford Falcon shop-manual listing says the 1963 Falcon supplement is included. That is useful period-specific service information for an owner or inspector, but a manual is a reference for procedures, not a diagnosis of the car in front of you. Have a qualified mechanic perform compression or leak-down testing, cooling-system checks, charging and starting tests, brake measurements, and a lift examination when the purchase is serious.
5. Verify a V-8 claim and understand the supporting changes
The Ford engineering report reproduced in the May 2022 Falcon Club of America publication says that installing a V-8 Falcon required structural and suspension changes, not merely an engine swap. Bruce Wolfe, the club’s head technical advisor, introduces the historical material with this sentence:

Use that information to direct the inspection. Check engine mounts, crossmember and suspension work, steering clearance, cooling capacity, exhaust routing, brake and axle components, wiring, and evidence that the modifications were engineered and completed correctly. Ask for invoices, photographs, and parts documentation. A poorly documented conversion deserves scrutiny, but the report does not establish that every modified car is unsafe.
Period design figures are not a test result
The same Ford engineering report cites these design-era figures. They describe the 1963 engineering material, not measured output from the car you are considering:

Do not use those numbers to claim that a surviving engine still produces its rated output. Condition, rebuild specification, carburetion, ignition, exhaust, and measurement method all affect a present-day result.

6. Separate originality from restoration quality
A car can be largely original yet need major work, or highly restored yet contain incorrect parts and undocumented structural repairs. Decide which matters to you before comparing cars. For a historically correct example, verify trim, engine and transmission, interior materials, wheels, tags, and date-consistent components. For a reliable driver, prioritize sound structure, safe brakes and steering, dependable cooling, electrical integrity, and complete weather sealing even if some components are upgraded.
Questions for the seller
- Which work was completed by a shop, and which was done by an owner?
- When were the floors, rockers, torque-box areas, or other structural sections repaired?
- Are there photographs before bodywork and paint?
- Which engine, transmission, rear axle, brakes, steering, and suspension parts are currently installed?
- When was the top, rear window, or weather stripping replaced?
- Are there receipts, alignment reports, compression results, or cooling-system tests?
- Has the car had flood, fire, major collision, or long-term outdoor storage?
Incomplete answers are not proof of a bad car, but they increase the amount of verification you should require and the uncertainty you should price into an offer.
7. Compare candidate cars in the order that protects your budget
When two cars appear similarly attractive, compare them using this sequence:

- Structural rust and repair quality: reject severe or poorly documented unibody damage before debating paint color or trim.
- Identity, originality, and documentation: establish whether the claimed Sprint, V-8, or factory equipment is supported by records and expert interpretation.
- Top and sealing system: price fabric, frame, operating hardware, seals, drainage, and interior water damage as one system.
- Engine, transmission, brakes, and steering: weigh test results and road behavior more heavily than a clean engine bay.
- Restoration workmanship and completeness: account for missing trim, incorrect parts, unfinished wiring, and cosmetic work that conceals defects.
- Price against current evidence: obtain current comparable sales or a specialist appraisal and subtract the work still required.
No current price range or model-wide failure rate is established by the historical and club material cited here. Do not repeat an unsupported value. A written appraisal based on the specific car, its documentation, and its inspection findings is more useful than a generic asking-price guide.
8. A practical inspection-day checklist
Bring the title and registration for comparison, a flashlight, inspection mirror, magnet, notebook, phone camera, and clothing suitable for looking under the car. These aids help you document observations; they do not replace a specialist’s lift inspection.
- Confirm that the seller has not warmed the engine or operated the top before arrival.
- Photograph identification markings, engine and transmission numbers or tags, structural repairs, and the underside before the car is moved.
- Walk around the body in daylight, comparing panel gaps, door operation, windshield-frame alignment, and paint transitions.
- Raise the car on a lift and inspect the front structure, torque-box areas, rockers, floors, trunk, rear structure, and suspension mounts on both sides.
- Start the engine cold and record smoke, noises, leaks, charging behavior, idle, and temperature.
- Cycle the top completely, then inspect fabric, window, frame, seals, drainage, carpet, floors, and trunk for water evidence.
- Road-test the car only when the seller and your insurer permit it; test shifting, steering, braking, ride, vibration, and temperature.
- Give the photographs, paperwork, and test notes to a classic-Ford specialist for a written assessment and repair estimate.
When to walk away or renegotiate
Pause the purchase when the seller refuses a lift inspection, will not allow a cold start or complete top cycle, cannot explain major structural repairs, or offers only badges as proof of a claimed Sprint or V-8. A car with documented rust repair, a sound top system, and transparent modifications may still be a sensible project even when it is not factory-original. Conversely, fresh paint, a shiny engine bay, and a working roof do not offset perforated structure, unsafe brakes, or extensive water damage. Make the decision from verified condition and the cost of completing the work, not from the car’s trim name alone.
