Before booking a robotaxi in California, confirm in the operator’s app that it accepts both your pickup and destination, review the quoted fare, and check passenger and child-seat rules. If your trip involves an airport, verify that the operator is authorized there and that the requested ride is available in the app. State approval maps describe where a service may operate; they do not guarantee a ride from every address.
1. Confirm the pickup and destination in the operator’s app
Check both addresses in the actual app you plan to use. A vehicle’s approved operating area is a regulatory boundary, not a promise that every point inside it is selectable or that a car is available at the time you request one. Waymo directs riders to request a car in an eligible service area through its app, and its 2026 California safety-plan update says the service is limited to its authorized operational design domain. Riders cannot select a destination outside that domain.

For a regulatory reference, the California DMV’s Waymo approved-areas page links to maps and lists approved vehicle platforms and operating conditions. Those approvals should not be read as a guarantee that a particular trip will be accepted in all weather, at every mapped location, or at the moment you request it. The service can be capacity-limited, and Waymo says it may adjust behavior in conditions such as heavy rain or fog.
Use current maps and the live app rather than an old city or county list: mapped and usable service areas can change. The DMV and CPUC pages below document Waymo, not every California robotaxi operator. Check the rules and live coverage for the specific company you intend to ride with.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable only via the Lyft mobile application.
- Redemption: Mobile
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
2. Check the fare estimate before confirming
Waymo says its app displays a price estimate before booking. Review that estimate for your specific trip before you confirm; there is no single fare that applies to every robotaxi ride. For another operator, check its own app and help materials rather than assuming the same pricing display or fare policy.
3. Make sure your group and any child seats fit the rules
Waymo’s current rider instructions set a maximum of four riders. The front seat is available to guests aged 8 or older. Riders traveling with children must bring and install a car seat or booster seat in the back seat according to the seat manufacturer’s instructions. These are Waymo’s policies, not a California-wide passenger rule for all robotaxi services.

If you are booking with another operator, verify its passenger limit and child-seat policy directly before requesting a ride. Do not assume a vehicle’s apparent number of seats is the permitted passenger capacity.

4. Treat an airport ride as a separate authorization check
California’s Public Utilities Commission says autonomous-vehicle passenger service at an airport requires express permission from the relevant airport authority. Its permit and airport-authorization page lists permit holders and airport authorizations. Permission is specific to the operator and airport, so confirm that the operator is currently authorized for the airport you need and that the app offers your requested pickup or drop-off. An authorization does not, by itself, establish that a particular ride is available.

5. Check trip details the official booking information may not settle
For matters that can affect whether the trip works for you, consult the chosen operator’s current app and help pages. The official information cited here does not establish California-wide or current service-wide policies for the following:
- Baggage limits
- Payment methods
- Cancellation fees
- All accessibility accommodations
- Service-animal handling
- Whether a human rider-support contact is available, or how quickly one responds
These details can vary by operator. If one is essential to your trip, confirm it before booking instead of relying on another company’s policy or assuming it is standard.

6. Understand what California safety oversight does—and does not—mean
The DMV’s 2026 announcement about updated autonomous-vehicle regulations describes expanded oversight and enforcement. It covers items including first-responder interaction plans with two-way communication links and 30-second response times, emergency geofencing directives, additional reporting, and possible operational restrictions. The DMV says some provisions take effect immediately while others phase in over the coming months. The announcement describes regulatory controls; it is not a guarantee that a trip is risk-free, nor a replacement for following the operator’s rider instructions.

Quick Recap
A quick pre-booking checklist
- Enter both your pickup and destination in the operator’s current app and make sure the trip is offered.
- Review the fare estimate shown for that specific ride.
- Confirm the passenger limit and any age or child-seat instructions that apply to your group.
- For an airport trip, check the operator’s authorization for that specific airport and confirm the requested ride in the app.
- Check the operator’s current terms for baggage, payment, cancellation, accessibility, service animals, and support if any of those affect your plans.
