Before you pay a booking deposit, verify six things in writing: who legally built the SUV, what its independent safety record shows, where warranty repairs will be performed, what the warranty actually covers, the complete ownership cost, and the exact deposit and delivery terms. An unfamiliar badge is not proof that a vehicle is unsafe, but incomplete documentation is a reason to pause. This checklist is written for U.S. buyers and applies when a specific model, seller, and contract have not yet been independently verified.
1. Confirm who actually manufactures the SUV
A new badge may represent a new company, an importer, an assembler, or a distributor using another company’s factory. Those roles affect the certification paperwork, warranty responsibility, parts supply, and who must address a safety defect. Ask the seller to identify the legal manufacturer and, if different, the company importing or distributing the vehicle.

Request the vehicle identification number and certification label
Ask when a VIN will be assigned and request it as soon as one exists. On the vehicle, locate the certification label and photograph it. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the label identifies the vehicle manufacturer and manufacture date and includes this statement: “This vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) in effect on the date of manufacture shown above.” See the NHTSA importation and certification FAQ for the agency’s explanation.
The label is evidence of the vehicle’s certification status; it is not a reliability rating, an endorsement of the manufacturer, or proof that the SUV has no open recalls. Compare the name on the label with the name on the order form, warranty, title paperwork, and any importer agreement. If the names differ, ask which entity is legally responsible for warranty claims and recall notices.

Check the paperwork before money changes hands
- Legal manufacturer and country of manufacture or final assembly.
- Importer, distributor, and selling dealer, with business addresses.
- Exact model, trim, drivetrain, battery or engine specification, and model year.
- VIN, once assigned, plus the promised date for providing it.
- Any document describing certification, emissions compliance, or equipment included in the quoted configuration.
If a representative will not identify the manufacturer or cannot explain which company honors the warranty, make that an unresolved condition rather than relying on a salesperson’s verbal assurance.
2. Check independent safety and recall information
Use NHTSA’s tools twice: first for the general model and later for the individual vehicle. On NHTSA’s recall page, search by year, make, and model to review available safety ratings, recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. A year/make/model search describes the model generally; a VIN or license-plate search is intended to identify information about a specific vehicle.
Run the VIN search when the VIN is available
- Enter the complete VIN exactly as supplied by the seller.
- Save or print the result, including the date you checked it.
- Ask the dealer to explain every open recall and whether a repair is available before delivery.
- Recheck immediately before taking delivery if the VIN was assigned weeks earlier.
NHTSA notes that its VIN lookup uses recall information provided by manufacturers and that a recall may not yet be posted on the agency’s site. Treat a clear result as a useful check, not a guarantee of a defect-free vehicle or a complete reliability history.

Put recall numbers in context
NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025 on its Vehicle Safety Resources page. That is a count of recalls and affected vehicles during that year, not a defect rate for this SUV or any particular automaker. Look at the remedy, affected production dates, and whether the repair is available rather than treating the number of campaigns alone as a pass-or-fail score.
Compare candidates on the same evidence

3. Verify warranty and repair access
A written warranty is only useful if you can reach an authorized repair location and the responsible company remains available after delivery. Before booking, ask for the actual warranty booklet or terms, not a summary on a website.
Map the service network
- List every location that can perform warranty diagnosis and repairs, not just routine maintenance.
- Measure driving distance and ask about appointment lead times, loaner vehicles, towing, and roadside assistance.
- Ask whether independent shops may perform covered work and what authorization is required.
- Confirm how parts are ordered, the expected process for a back-ordered part, and who pays for transport or lodging if the SUV is immobilized.
- Get a phone number and email for warranty claims, separate from the salesperson’s personal contact.
Do not infer that a new brand has a nationwide network. The available public guidance establishes why the written terms matter, but it does not establish the service coverage or warranty performance of any particular manufacturer.

Read the warranty terms line by line
Record the coverage period in both time and mileage, the components included, labor coverage, corrosion or battery provisions where relevant, exclusions, maintenance requirements, and the procedure for disputing a denied claim. Ask whether the warranty follows the vehicle if it is sold and whether software updates, towing, and diagnostic fees are covered. Distinguish a factory warranty from an optional service contract; the FTC’s auto-warranty guidance explains that these are different products with different obligations.
4. Calculate the complete cost, not just the advertised price
Consumer.gov lists sales tax, registration fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and loan interest among the costs to consider when buying a car. Use its Buying a Car guidance as a checklist, then replace general categories with quotes for your vehicle and location.

Compare financing offers by total cost and terms, not by the lowest monthly payment. A longer term can reduce the payment while increasing interest and leaving you owing more for longer. Request a buyer’s order showing the out-the-door total before you authorize a deposit.

5. Read the booking and purchase documents before paying
Ask for the complete booking form, buyer’s order, deposit receipt, warranty terms, and any financing or service-contract documents. The FTC’s Buyers Guide states: “Spoken promises are difficult to enforce. Ask the dealer to put all promises in writing. Keep this form.” Apply that principle to every promise about equipment, price, delivery, trade-in value, or repairs.
Make the deposit clause unambiguous
The document should state the deposit amount, the payment method, whether it is refundable, the deadline and conditions for a refund, and whether it is applied to the purchase price. It should also identify what happens if the seller cannot deliver, the vehicle arrives with a different specification, the price changes, or you cannot obtain financing.

- Write a delivery window or date and identify whether it is an estimate or a contractual commitment.
- List the exact trim, color, equipment, software features, drivetrain, and included accessories.
- State whether the seller may substitute equipment or increase the price, and your right to reject a change.
- Itemize every optional accessory, protection product, service contract, and documentation charge separately.
- Keep a signed copy and all revisions; do not rely on a text message that is absent from the contract.
Do not assume a general three-day federal cancellation period applies to a dealer car purchase. FTC guidance says federal law does not require one; cancellation rights may instead come from state law or the dealer’s written policy. Confirm the rule that applies where you sign and make any promised cancellation right explicit in the contract.

6. Compare unfamiliar-brand SUVs with an evidence matrix
When two or more SUVs are under consideration, score the documentation rather than the novelty of the badge. A long warranty or attractive rating cannot compensate for an unknown warranty administrator, no nearby repair site, or an unclear deposit clause.

7. Use this prepayment sequence
- Identify the exact vehicle. Write down model year, trim, drivetrain, equipment, seller, legal manufacturer, and expected VIN date.
- Collect the documents. Obtain the certification information, warranty booklet, buyer’s order, deposit agreement, financing disclosure, and itemized options in one folder.
- Run safety checks. Search the model on NHTSA, then run the VIN search and save dated results when the VIN exists.
- Confirm support. Call the nearest authorized repair site and the warranty administrator with a hypothetical claim; verify that both recognize the model and explain the process consistently.
- Build the ownership budget. Add taxes, registration, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, financing interest, and recurring fees to the quoted vehicle price.
- Resolve every contract blank. Fill in the deposit refund rule, delivery timing, specification, price, change rights, and cancellation terms before signing.
- Pay only after review. Use a traceable payment method, obtain a receipt naming the vehicle and contract, and keep copies of every signed page and subsequent revision.
Red flags that justify stopping the booking
- The seller will not identify the legal manufacturer, importer, or warranty provider.
- A VIN is promised only after payment, with no written delivery or refund condition.
- The seller refuses to provide warranty terms or cannot name an authorized repair location.
- Fees, accessories, or financing conditions appear only after the advertised price is accepted.
- Delivery dates and specifications are described as guaranteed verbally but are absent from the contract.
- The deposit is called “nonrefundable” without stating what happens if the seller changes the price, specification, or delivery date.
- You are pressured to sign immediately or discouraged from taking the documents for review.
Resolve a red flag with a revised document, not a promise to “fix it later.” If the seller will not provide the information, keep your money and compare a vehicle whose identity, safety data, support network, costs, and contract can be verified.
