Before paying for a hydrofoil ticket, verify three things with the operator for your exact route and sailing: the baggage allowance and storage arrangement, the accessibility of the vessel and berth, and the remedy offered if weather stops the service. Hydrofoil rules are not standardized. A policy that works on one route may be unsuitable on another vessel, even when both are sold as hydrofoil ferries.
Confirm the current terms for your date, vessel and fare in writing when your needs are important. Keep the operator’s contact details available, because sea conditions can change the plan after you book.

Why a generic “ferry luggage allowance” is unsafe
Hydrofoil operators set their own limits for the number of bags, weight, dimensions, fees and storage. Some allow only a small personal item; others publish a larger hand-carry limit. A fleet may also lack a conventional luggage hold, so a bag that meets a weight limit still might not have a place to travel safely.

Ask these questions before checkout:
- Is the allowance per passenger or per booking?
- How many items are included, and is a personal item counted separately?
- What are the maximum weight and external dimensions?
- Is excess baggage accepted, and must you buy a baggage ticket in advance?
- Where will the bag be kept during the crossing?
- Can the vessel accommodate unusually shaped equipment, a stroller or a mobility device?
Do not infer an allowance from the word “ferry” or from another operator’s website. The following published examples show how far the rules can differ.

These are examples from individual operators, not an industry standard. A portable luggage scale can help when a selected service publishes a weight cap, such as Cotai Water Jet’s 20 kg limit, but a scale does not check dimensions, quantity or whether the item is accepted.
How to verify baggage before you pay
1. Measure the packed item
Pack the bag exactly as you expect to carry it, then measure length, width and height at the widest points. Compare each number with the operator’s stated maximum; do not assume that a bag under the total dimensional sum will pass if one side exceeds the limit.
2. Confirm the quantity and ownership of the allowance
Ask whether the limit applies to each passenger, each reservation or the whole party. Clarify whether a handbag, laptop bag, camera case or child item counts as the one permitted piece. If two people are traveling, do not assume that one passenger can use the other passenger’s unused allowance unless the operator confirms it.
3. Arrange excess baggage in the required way
Where an operator requires a separate baggage ticket, buy or request it through the channel specified in the booking terms. Liberty Lines states that excess baggage needs a baggage ticket. Carrying an oversized bag to the terminal without that authorization can create a last-minute refusal or delay.

4. Find out where the bag travels
Ask whether the item remains with you, goes into a designated storage space or is handled in another way. Liberty Lines says its fleet has no luggage storage, a material difference from a ferry with a hold. If you need medication, documents, fragile equipment or valuables during the crossing, ask whether they may remain in your possession.
Accessibility must be confirmed for the exact vessel
“Wheelchair accessible” is not a single hydrofoil standard. Boarding may involve a ramp or steps, a transfer from a wheelchair to a fixed seat, staff assistance and a separate location for the mobility device. The same operator may use vessels or berths with different arrangements, and a special experience may have no wheelchair access at all.
Contact the operator before booking and describe the passenger’s equipment and level of assistance needed. Request a clear answer for the exact sailing, not a general statement about the company.
Questions to ask the operator
- Is the boarding route step-free, or are there stairs or a narrow gangway?
- Will trained staff assist at the terminal and during boarding?
- Must the passenger transfer to a designated fixed seat?
- Can the wheelchair remain beside the passenger, or where will it be stowed?
- Are powered mobility devices accepted, and are there size or weight limits?
- Does the berth used by this departure have the necessary ramp or lift?
- Is an accessible toilet available on this vessel?
- How much advance notice is required, and how should the request be recorded?
What the published policies show
Vetor Aliscafi says its staff are trained to assist passengers with reduced mobility. Cotai Water Jet says wheelchair users may request help from terminal staff, but its safety seating rules require the passenger to transfer to designated seats; a wheelchair cannot remain in the passenger seat. Fullers360’s terms for a particular electric hydrofoil experience say wheelchair access is not currently available on that vessel.

Those arrangements are materially different. A passenger who cannot transfer, or who must remain in a wheelchair, needs an explicit confirmation that the chosen vessel can meet that requirement. Ask the operator to note the assistance request on the reservation and arrive early enough for the agreed procedure.
Weather can cancel a hydrofoil even when the port is calm
Hydrofoils can be more sensitive to adverse sea conditions than conventional ferries. Wind, waves and other marine conditions may make a planned crossing unsafe or uncomfortable, so an operator can change the sailing after tickets have been issued. Vetor Aliscafi advises checking the local marine forecast and says adverse sea conditions can lead to cancellations.
Build a weather check into your itinerary
- Check the operator’s service-alert page or message channel on the day before travel.
- Review the local marine forecast close to departure; a general city weather app may not describe sea conditions adequately.
- Keep the phone number and email used in the booking active while you are on the island or at the destination.
- Leave time for a later sailing or a conventional-ferry alternative if the route offers one.
- Do not travel to the terminal assuming that a ticket guarantees departure when the operator has issued a weather warning.
Vetor Aliscafi specifically recommends considering conventional ferry alternatives when travelers still need to make the journey. An alternative may take longer, have different baggage handling or use another terminal, so check those conditions before relying on it.

A weather cancellation does not automatically produce the same remedy on every ticket. Read the fare conditions attached to your booking and ask which rule applies when the operator cancels, rather than when you cancel voluntarily.

Weather and technical cancellation example
Vetor Aliscafi says that when a service is cancelled for technical reasons or adverse weather, refunds are limited to the ticket price. It describes rescheduling or an open voucher as possible options. Confirm whether you must choose one of those options by a deadline and whether a voucher can be used on a different route or date.
Passenger-initiated cancellation example
Alilauro’s published general conditions use separate passenger-cancellation percentages based on how close the cancellation is to departure. The captured conditions do not establish the percentages for this article, so check the current table attached to your fare. They also state that special fares are non-refundable but may be changeable under stated conditions, and that booking fees are not refundable.
These examples should not be generalized. Before payment, save or print the fare rules showing cancellation timing, change eligibility, refund scope, voucher terms and any non-refundable fee. If the operator cancels, ask whether the remedy is a refund, a new sailing or a voucher, and whether the unused portion of a connecting booking is covered.

Boarding and ticket checks that can affect your trip
Arrival time and ticket format
Alilauro advises passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Its FAQ says an electronic QR-code ticket can be displayed on paper or on a device. A different operator may impose an earlier check-in time or require identification, so use the instructions printed on your confirmation.

Baggage declaration and boarding-pass records
Vetor Aliscafi instructs passengers to present the boarding-pass QR code and declare luggage. It also advises keeping collected boarding passes for relevant refund requests. Photograph or store the pass and the cancellation notice until the matter is resolved.
Reachable contact details
Vetor Aliscafi recommends giving the operator a telephone number that will be used during an island stay so it can contact passengers about cancellations. Use a number with service where you will actually be staying, and check messages before leaving for the port.
A practical pre-booking checklist
- Route and vessel: Record the operator, departure port, arrival port, date, departure time and vessel if listed.
- Bags: Write down the included number, maximum weight, maximum dimensions, personal-item rule and any excess-baggage ticket requirement.
- Storage: Confirm whether bags remain with passengers or whether a storage area exists, especially if traveling with large or fragile items.
- Accessibility: Describe the passenger’s mobility device and transfer needs; obtain confirmation for the exact sailing and berth.
- Notice: Ask how far in advance an assistance request must be made and where staff will meet you.
- Weather: Identify the official alert channel, check the marine forecast and keep a conventional-ferry or later-sailing option in mind.
- Disruption remedy: Check refund, rebooking, voucher and change rules for the fare you are buying.
- Boarding: Verify the check-in deadline, QR-code acceptance, identification requirements and baggage declaration process.
- Records: Save the confirmation, fare conditions, boarding pass and any operator message until the crossing is complete.
When to choose a different sailing or ferry
Choose another service before payment if the operator cannot confirm a bag allowance that fits your equipment, cannot keep a required mobility device with you or provide a safe transfer, or offers no workable remedy for likely weather disruption. A slower conventional ferry may be preferable when forecast conditions are unsettled or when it has storage and boarding arrangements better suited to your party.
Make that decision using route-specific facts: baggage dimensions and fees, vessel-level accessibility, alert procedures, fare remedies and terminal timing. Comparing those five points is more reliable than ranking hydrofoil operators by speed or by a general accessibility label.
